Drakwald are a band from France that plays a mixture of pagan, folk, and melodic death metal and this is a review of their self released 2016 album "Riven Earth".
Acoustic guitar playing starts off the album giving the music more of a medieval feeling before going into a heavier musical direction that uses death metal growls and blast beats while also mixing in folk instruments and melodic guitar leads can also be heard quite a bit throughout the recording giving the music a Swedish feeling.
Black metal screams can be heard in some parts of the songs along with some melodic pagan vocals also being mixed in at times and the music also has some Finnish influences in some of the tracks and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while acoustic guitars can also return as the album progresses and some of the riffs also bring in a touch of thrash on some of the later tracks and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them.
Drakwald plays a musical style that takes the more melodic sides of black and death metal and mixes them together with pagan and folk metal to create a style t hat is very heavy while different, the production sounds very professional for being a self released recording while the lyrics cover Nordic paganism and Epic Fantasy themes.
In my opinion Drakwald are a very great sounding mixture of melodic death, black, pagan and folk metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Erase By Fire" "Despair Of The Last Man" "Echoes Of Memories" and "Blood And Glory". 8 out of 10.
