Gloomy Grim/Agathonomicon/Satanath Records/Murdher Records/2021 CD Review

 

  Finland's  Gloomy  Grim  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  symphonic  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Agathonomicon"  which  will  be  released  on  April  28th  as  a  joint  effort  between  Satanath  and  Murdher  Records.

  A  very  ritualistic  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  while  also  introducing  grim  black  metal  vocals  onto  the  recording  which  also  takes  the  music  into  a  heavier  direction.  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  symphonic  sounding  keyboards  are  also  added  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music.

  A  lot  of  the  songs  are  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  mid  90's  era  along  with  one  of  the  tracks  also  introducing  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  album  as  well  as  a  later  track  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  back  up  shouts  and  growls.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Occultism,  Darkness,  Death,  Horror  and  War  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Gloomy  Grim  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  symphonic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Hermit"  "Third  Eye  Opening"  "To  The  Death,  i  Have  Sworn"  and  "Haunting,  Hunting, Howling".  8  out  of  10.

Gloomy Grim/Obscure Metamorphosis/Symbol Of Domination Productions/Murdher Records/2018 EP Review

  Finland's  Gloomy  Grim  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that  continues  the  symphonic  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  ep  "Obscure  Metamorphosis"  which  was  released  as  a  joint effort  between  Symbol  of  Domination  Productions  and  Murdher  Records.

  A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  that  also  get  very  deep  and  grim  at  times  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  A  great  amount  of  melody  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  fast  riffs  also  adding  in  some  tremolo  picking  and  later  songs  also  bring  in  more  symphonic  elements  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  On  this  recording  Gloomy  Grim  remains  true  to  the  symphonic  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Anti  Christianity,  Satanism,  Horror  and  Darkness  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Gloomy  Grim  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Stars  Above  Me"  and  "Impressive  Physical  Sight".  8  out  of  10.

Gloomy Grim/Fuck The World, War Is War!/Symbol Of Domination Productions/Murdher Records/2017 CD Compilation Review

  Finland's  Gloomy  Grim have  returned  with  a  album  that  is  in  the  symphonic  black  metal  style  while  also  being  a collection  of  songs  they  have  released  over  the  years and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  compilation  album "Fuck  The  World,  War  Is  War!"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Symbol Of  Domination  Productions  and  Murdher  Records.

  Symphonic  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  compilation  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later  and  after  awhile  heavy  guitar  riffs  start  to  make  their  presence  known  and  they  also  mix  in  with  the  symphonic  sections  of  the  music  while  the riffs  also  use  a  decent  amount  of  melody.

  One  of  the  tracks  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  guitar  leads  are finally  added  into  the  songs  they  give  the  music  more  of  an  old  school  metal  feeling  while  also having  their  melodic  moments  and  female  vocals  along  with  spoken  word  parts  are  also  used  briefly  and  all  of  the  songs  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  paced  musical  direction.

  With  this  compilation  Gloomy  Grim  brings  in  a  mixture  of  both  new  and  old  material  which  is  all  in  a  symphonic  black  metal  style,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  War,  Anti  Christianity,  Darkness,  Death,  and  Horror  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very great  sounding  collection  from  Gloomy  Grim and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Written  In  Blood"  "Asylum"  and  "Blood".  8  out  of  10.

Gloomy Grim/The Age Of Aquarius/Satanath Records/Murdher Records/2016 CD Review

  Gloomy  Grim  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  has  been  around  for  over  20  years  and  plays  a  symphonic  form  of  horror  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "The  Age  Of  Aquarius"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Satanath  Records  and  Murdher  Records.

  A  very  symphonic  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  the  vocals  are  done  in  a  very  grim  yet  deep  style  of  black  metal  screams  while  also  getting  high  pitched  at  times  and  the  solos  and  leads  the  band  utilizes  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  riffs  also  use  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  classical  guitars  along  with  melodic  chants  are  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  when  growls  are  utilized  they  bring  in  a  touch  of  death  metal  while  some  of  the  riffs  also  bring  in  elements  of  thrash  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  as  the  album  progresses  and  the  album  closes  with  an  instrumental  keyboard  track.

  Gloomy  Grim  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  symphonic  style  of  black  metal  that  was  established  on  previous  recordings,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Luciferian,  Thelemea,  Left  Hand  Path  and  Occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Gloomy  Grim  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  symphonic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Rise  Of  The  Great  Beast"  "A  Lady  in  White"  "The  Shameful  Kiss"  and  "Light  Of  Lucifer  Shine  On  Me".  8  out  of  10.
