Breaths/Melt Away/2024 EP Review

 

  Rchmond,  Virginia's  solo  project  Breaths  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  experimental  shoegaze  direction  with  elements  of  black,  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  ep  "Melt  Away"  which  will  be  released  in  2024.

  Synths  start  off  the  album  while  also  adding  in  elements  of  post  rock  and  shoegaze  along  with  the  vocals  adding  in  more  of  a  clear  style.  Electric  guitars  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  at  times  as  well  as  the  slower  riffs  also  adding  in  the  heaviness  and  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Some  of  the  music  also  captures  the  dark  atmosphere  of  post  black  metal  while  the  songs  also  mix  in  a  lot  of  touches  of  alternative  rock   and  all  of  the  tracks  stick  to  a  slower  direction  and  also  adds  in  some  90's  era  influences.

  On  this  recording  Breaths  moves  away  from  the  black  metal  influences  of  previous  releases  and  goes  for  more  of  a  shoegaze  and  alternative  rock  direction  which  also  adds  in  some  of  the  heavier  side  of  sludge  and  doom  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  melancholic  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  decent  sounding  recording  from  Breaths  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  shoegaze,  alternative,  post  rock,  sludge  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Fade  Apart"  and  "Shaken".  8  out  of  10.

Breaths/Isolera/2022 Full Length Review

 

  Richmond,  Virginia's  solo  project  Breaths  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  instrumental  mixture  of  blackgaze,  doom  metal,  post  rock,  chillhop,  ambient  and  drone  and  the  album  was  self  released  in  2022  and  called  "Isolera".

  Ambient  style  synths  and  drones  start  off  the  album  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  All  of  the  music  also  sticks  to  an  instrumental  direction  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  repetitive  moments  and  when  slow  guitar  riffs  are  added  onto  the  recording  they  also  add  in  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal.

  Blackgaze  style  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  sounds  while  a  lot  of  the  music  also  sounds  very  improvised.  All  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other  along  with  one  song  also  adding  in  post  rock  style  clean  playing  and  the  whole  album  also  sticks  to  a  slower  direction,  programmed  beats  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  On  this  recording  breaths  takes  ambient,  drone,  cillhop,  post  rock,  doom  metal  and  blackgaze  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  something  very  different  from  previous  releases  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Breaths  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackgaze,  doom  metal,  post  rock  chillhop,  ambient  and  drone,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Movement  II"  and  "Movement  IV".  8  out  of  10.

Dimwind/Breaths/Trepanation Recordings/2022 Split EP Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  Sweden's  Dimwind  and  U.S.A's  Breaths  which  will b e  released  in  April  by  Trepanation  Recordings  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Dimwind  a  band  that  plays  an  instrumental  form  of  post  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  keyboards  and  spoken  word  parts  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  The  music  also  brings  in a  great  amount  of  post  metal  elements  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  and  their  only  track  is  over  15  minutes  in  length,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  the  production  sounds  very  professional.

  In  my  opinion  Dimwind  are  a  very  great  sounding  post  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of t he  split.

  Next  up  is  Breaths  who  return  with  a  mixture  of  blackgaze,  doomgaze,  post  metal  and  hardcore.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  song  bringing  in  elements  of  doom  metal.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast b eats  can b e  heard  along  with  their  only  track  being  almost  15  minutes  in  length, when  clean  vocals  are  utilized  they  also  add  in  touches  of  post  metal.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  shoegaze  style.  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  and  the  lyrics  cover  humanity's  abuse  of  the  planet.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  track  from  breaths  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackgaze,  doomgaze,  post  metal  and hardcore,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of t he  split.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  i  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  doom,  post  metal  and  blackgaze.  8  out  of  10.

  This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Richmond,  Virginia's  Breaths  which  continues  the  progressive  mixture  of  post  black,  doom, alternative  metal,  post  hardcore  and  shoegaze  and  the  album  will  be  released  in  2022  by  Trepanation  Recordings  and  called  "Though  life  has  turned  out nothing  like  I  imagined, it  is  far  better  than  I  could  have  dreamt".

  Melodic  riffing  and  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  start  off  the  album  while  elements  of  doom  metal  are  also  added  into  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs.  Clear  alternative  metal  style  vocals  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  along  with  some  growls  also  being  used  in  some  part  of  the  recording.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal  style  while  the  clean  sections  also add in  touches  of  shoegaze.  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  also  showing  an  influence  of  post  hardcore.

  The  music  also  has  its  progressive  and  atmospheric  moments along  with  some  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  synths  as  well  as  most  of  the  music  also  sticking  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  musical  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  anxiety  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Breaths  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  post  black,  doom,  progressive,  alternative  metal,  post  hardcore  and  shoegaze,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Elders"  and  "The  Wayward".  8  out  of  10.

Breaths/Lined In Silver/Trepanation Recordings/2021CD Review

 

  Breaths  are  a  solo  project  from  Richmond,  Virgiania  that  plays  a  progressive  mixture  of  post  black,  doom  metal,  post  hardcore  and  shoegaze  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2021  album  "Lined  In  Silver"  which  was  released  by  Trepanation  Recordings.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  elements  of  shoegaze  and  post  rock  a  few  seconds  later.  Clear  vocals  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  as  well  as  the  slower  and  heavier  riffs  also  mixing  in  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  melody.
