Primitive Man/Immersion/Relapse Records/2020 CD Review

  Denver,  Colorado's  Primitive  Man  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  blackened  mixture  of  sledge,  doom  metal  and  noise  from  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Immersion"  which  will  be  released  in  August  by  Relapse  Records.

A  very  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  doom  metal  direction  which  also  captures  the  heaviness  of  sludge  metal.  Vocals  are  done  in  a  mostly  a  growling  style  while  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  blackened  screams  are  also  utilized  at  times.

  When  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them. During  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  guitar  amp  noises,  one  of  the  later  songs  is  also  a  harsh  noise  instrumental.

  On  this  recording  Primitive  Man  remains  true  to  the  blackened  mixture  of  sludge,  doom  metal  and  noise  that  was  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  hatred  and  misanthropy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Primitive  Man  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Entity"  and  "Consumption".  8  out  of  10.

Primitive Man/Hell/Translation Loss Records/2019 Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Denver,  Colorado's  Primitive  Man  and  Portland,  Oregon's  Hell  which  will  be  released  in  February  by  Translation  Loss  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Primitive  Man  who  return  with  their  blackened  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  with  some  distorted  amp  noises  before  adding  in  some  heavy  sludge  and  doom  metal  riffing.  Vocals  are  mostly  deep  death  metal  growls  as  well  as  some  black  metal  screams  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Both  of  their  tracks  are  long  and  epic  in  length  while  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  when  the  music  speeds  up  as  well  as  the  music  always  sticking  to  a  very  dark  and  heavy  direction,  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  hatred  and  misanthropy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Primitive  Man  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  doom  and  sludge  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Oily  Tears".

  Next  up  is  hell  a  band  that  plays  a  blackened  mixture  of  drone,  sludge  and  doom  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  distorted  amp  sounds  before  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.  Their  track  is  also  9  minutes  in  length  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  elements  of  sludge  and  doom  metal a re  added  in  the  slow  and  heavy  riffing.

  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  a  small  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  the  track  always  sticking  to  a  very  dark  and  heavy  musical  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  misery,  darkness,  pain  and  death  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Hell  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  drone,  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  black,  sludge  and  doom  metal.  8  out  of  10.

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Colorado's  Primitive  Man  and  new  York's  Unearthly  Trance  which  will  be  released  in  August  by  Relapse  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Primitive  Man  who  return  with  their  blackened  mixture  of  noise,  sludge  and  doom  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  harsh  noise  intro  while  spoken  word  samples  can  also  be  heard  briefly  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  along  with  a  great  amount  of  distorted  drones  as  well  as  both  of  their  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and   the  slow  riffs  bring  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  and  doom  metal.

  When  vocals  are  utilized  they  are  a  mixture  of  death  metal growls  and  black  metal  screams  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  both  of  the  tracks  sticking  to  a  very  slow  direction  as  well  as  the  noise  elements  returning  on  the  second  track,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  hatred  and  misanthropy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Primitive  Man  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  noise,  black,  sludge  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Naked".

  Next  up  is  Unearthly  Trance  who  return  with  their  blackened  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  slow  and  heavy  sound  which  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  sludge  and  doom  metal  while  a  couple  of  their  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  screams  adding  in  elements  of  black  metal,  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in a   very  melodic  style  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  elements  of  noise  can  be  heard  on  the  closing  track,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  seasons,  occultism,  hallucination  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Unearthly  Trance  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  sludge  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Reverse  the  Day".

  In  conclusion  i  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  sludge  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  split.  8  out  of  10.

Primitive Man/Steel Casket/Tartarus Records/2018 EP Review

  Denver,  Colorado's Primitive  Man  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  where  they  move  away  from  their  blackened  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  by  bringing  in  more  of  a  mixture  of  harsh  noise,  drone  and  ambient  and  this  is  a  review  of t heir  2018  ep  "Steel  Casket"  which  will  be  released  on  April  25th  by  Tartarus  Records.

  Ambient  style  drones  start  off  the  ep  while  clean  guitars  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  they  give  the  music  more  of  an  experimental  and  avant  garde  feeling  along  with  both  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  after  awhile  power  electronics  and  harsh  noises  make  their  presence  known.

  After  awhile  the  music  gets  more  diverse  along  with  both  of  the  tracks  being  instrumentals  along  with  some  natural  noises  also  being  used  at  times  and  both  of  the  songs  sound  very  different  from  each  other.  and  the  acoustic  guitars  have  more  of  a  dominant  sound  on  the  second  track  and  towards  the  end  spoken  word  samples  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  On  this  recording  Primitive  Man  move  way  from t heir  blackened  sludge/doom  metal  style  and  go  into  more  of  an  instrumental  mixture  of  harsh  noise,  drone  and  ambient  and  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Primitive  Man  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient,  drone  and  harsh  noise,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "A  Life  Of  Turmoil".  8  out  of  10.

  Denver,  Colorado's  Primitive  Man  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  blackened  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Caustic"  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  Relapse  Records.

   Distorted  amp  sounds  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  sludge  and  doom  metal  direction  along  with  some  death  metal  growls  while  also  mixing  in  black  metal  screams  at  times  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

    Elements  of  harsh  noise  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  while  d  beats  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  brutal  blast  beats  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  more  of  an  atmospheric  and  melodic  post  metal  style.

  Primitive  Man  remains  true  to  the  blackened  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  form  previous  releases  while  also  mixing  in  more  elements  of  harsh  noise  this  time  around,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  hatred  an  misanthropy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Primitive  Man  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "My  Will"  "Commerce"  "Sugar  Hole"  and  "Inevitable".  8  out  of  10.

Primitive Man/Northless/Halo Of Flies/2016 Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Colorado's  Primitive  Man  and Wisconsin's  Northless  which will  be released  in  March  by  Halo  Of  Flies  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Primitive  Man  a  band  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  blackened  form  of  sludge/doom  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  distorted  reverb  before  going  into  a  very  heavy  sludge  metal  direction  and  their  only  song  is  15  minutes  and  after  a  few  seconds  death  metal  growls  are  added  into  the  music  along  with  a  few  screams  that  add  a  touch  of  black  metal  to  the  recording  and  after  awhile  the  music  speeds  up  and  brings  in  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover angry  themes.

  In  my opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  track  from  Primitive  Man,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.

  Next  up  is  Northless  a  band  that  plays  a  mixture  of  sludge,  doom  and  post  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  heavy  sound  that  mixes  sludge  and  post  metal  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  angry  screams  are  added  into  the  music  and  you  can also  hear  a  touch  of  hardcore  in  the  bands  musical  style  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them and  the  last  track  brings  in  a  few  seconds  of  clean  playing,  the production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  angry  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Northless  are  a  very  great sounding  mixture  of  sludge,  doom  and  post  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Wated  Breath".

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  album  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  sludge  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  split.  8  out  of  10.

  Primitive  Man  are  a  band  from  Colorado  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  blackened  form  of  doom/sludge  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  ep  "Home  Is  Where  The  hatred  Is"  which  will  be  released  in  February  by  Relapse  Records.

    A  very  distorted  reverb  sound  starts  off  the  ep  before  adding  in  heavy  guitar  and  bass  riffs  which  eventually  takes  the  music  into  more  of  a  sludge/doom  metal  direction  along  with  some  blackened  death  metal  growls  and  screams  and  on  some  parts  of  the   recording  the  music  does  speed  up  at  times  and  also  brings  in  a  good  amount  of  blast  beats.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  some  of  the  riffs  bringing  melodies  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  an d  in  some  of  the  faster  sections  you  can  hear  elements  of  grindcore  and  crust  influencing  their  musical  style  while  the  main  focus remains  more  on  a  slow  black/sludge/doom  metal  direction.

  Primitive  Man  creates  4  very  dark  and  heavy  sounding  blackened  doom/sludge  metal  songs  on  this  recording  and  also  remain  true  to  the  sound  they  established  on  their  last  release,  the production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  violent,  hateful  and  negative  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding   recording  from  Primitive  Man  and if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Loathe"  and  "Bag  Man".  8  out  of  10.

Primitive Man/Scorn/Throatruiner/Mordgrimm Records/2013 CD Review

  Primitive  Man  are  a  band  from  Denver,  Colorado  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  doom,  and  sludge  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "Scorn"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Throatruiner  and  Mordgrimm  Records.

  Drums  are  all  slow  to  mid  paced  playing  with  no  fast  playing  or  blast  beats  being  present  on  this  recording,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  with  heavy  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  are  all  slow  to  mid  paced  riffs  that  combine  black  metal,  doom,, crust  and  sludge  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  with  a  good  amount  of  heavy  distortion  behind  the  riffing  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  this  recording.

  Vocals  range from  deep  sludge/doom/death  metal  growls  to  high  pitched  black  metal screams,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes,  as  for  the  production  it has  a  very  dark,  heavy,  and  powerful  sound  to  it  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on t his  recording  with  some  of    the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Primitive  Man  are  a  very  great  and  heavy  sounding  hybrid  of  black  metal,  crust,  doom  and  sludge  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Scorn"  "Black  Storm"  and  "Astral  Sleep".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
