The Mountain King/Stoma/Void Key Recordings/2024 Full Length Review

 


  The  Mountain  King  are  a  solo  project  from  Germany  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  progressive  mixture  of  post  black,  doom,  death  metal  and  drone  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2024  album  "Stoma"  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  Void  Key  Recordings.


  Synth  orientated  drones  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  playing  a  few  seconds  alter  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  sounding  at  times  and  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  lot  of  black  metal  screams.


  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  album  also  bring  in  elements  of  doom  metal.  Clear  singing  is  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal  style.


  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  some  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  at  times  the  music  also  brings  in  the  heaviness  of  death  metal  and  some  of  the  album  also  adds  in  touches  of  ambient  and  post  hardcore.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  a  question  of  balance  between  everyday  life  and  the  thoughts  about  the  inevitable  death  of  the  individual  at  the  end  of  it.  


  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  The  Mountain  King  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of post  black,  doom,  death,  progressive  metal  and  drone,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Space  Is  Now  Tainted"  "Stoma"  and  "To  The  Caves".  8  out  of  10.

Wells Valley/Achamoth/Lavadome Productions/2023 Full Length Review

 




  Wells  Valley  are  a  band  from  Portugal  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  avant  garde  and  progressive  mixture  of  black,  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Achamoth"  which  was  released  by  Lavadome  Productions.


  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  bringing  in  elements  of  sludge  and  doom  metal.


  All  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats   and  tremolo  picking can  be  heard  when  the  music  speeds  up.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  sounding  along  with  some  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  as  well  as  the  music  also  having  its  avant  garde  moments  as  well  as  the  album  also  adding  in  a  good  amount  of  post  metal  touches,  growls  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  keyboards  are  also  added  towards  the  end.


  On  this  album  Wells  Valley  brings  more  more  of  a  progressive  and  avant  garde  blackened  sludge/doom  metal  style  with  some  elements  of  post  metal.  The  production   sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Hermeticism,  Philosophy,  Spirituality  and  theology  themes.


  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Wells  Valley  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  avant  garde  and  progressive  black,  sludge,  doom  and  post  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Princeps"  and  "Indwelling  In  Matter".  8  out  of  10.

(Dolch) Interview

 

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?

T: Hello! That´s a lot what happened, as the recording started a long time ago. Actually, we kept on writing songs and recording stuff for ever and we took a lot of work into mixing "NACHT". We played a handful of shows and a tiny little tour in the close east of Europe , which seemed like a miracle doing this during a worldwide pandemic situation.

 


2.You have a new album coming out this year, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

T: We used a bit less guitars, a bit more electronic sounds and we mixed the vocals louder. The songs are a bit shorter.

 M: FEUER, the previous Album, NACHT, released this year and TOD, still to be be finished, were recorded in a more than proper studio for the first time, so it gave us a lot of opportunities to vary with every instrument and soundscape on the recordings.


3.Your earlier material showed some black metal influences while the newer music sees you moving away from that influence, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical change?

T: I am not sure if we ever had a big black metal influence. Maybe even more influenced by music and tunes that have been an impact on what became then black metal? The 80ies? Early EBM and Doom music? We never had one specific sound. (Dolch) is like a chameleon of sound, depending on what story we want to tell. However. The guitar sound now is different, we also grew up with so much different music we would be lying to ourselves of denying other influences, like 90ies alternative and rock music, such as trip hop or anything experimental. Do you remember, back in the days even the word "Pop" was not a "no go" or something bad, when it was good quality?

 M: NACHT might differ when you listen to superficially. But it‘s just us. We are all influenced by such a broad variety of different genres in music and art, so it just has to come down to what fits best to the topic or songs.


4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with the newer music and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

T: The "Nacht" album is one trip through the night, we talk about euphoria & depression, lust for life but also the fear of it. We were hanging out in California during these recording sessions, it was beautiful but also cold and ugly at the same time. The night can make you become a stupid modern vampire, looking for attraction, but also leaves you spitted out ugly in the morning, lost and broken.

I think we learned to become more precise songwriters, more specific on the story. We are maybe not the best songwriters, but hopefully good storytellers. (Dolch) is not meant to be entertaining only, we always wanted to say something, to communicate with the listener.

 


5.You have also covered some occult topics on some of your releases, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic?


M: I am sorry. If you read it in an occult way, can you tell me more about it? It is your own decision on how to read the lyrics, I am definitely not the one to argue about it. But we never had that topic in mind.

T: There is no such topic in our songs, there never was. Sorry. But it is ok if you feel so.


 


6.I know that the bands name means 'dagger' in German, how does  this name fit in with the musical style that you play?

T: Actually, the band never really had a name but the symbol, the triangle and the dagger inside. It used to be a military sign, we turned it and de-militarized it. Somehow, the logo feels like a shield of protection for us, same as writing, recording and playing this music might protect us from becoming crazy.

M: T is right. But maybe it is little stitch to our hearts for every song.

 


7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

T: I remember the tour kick off in Berlin last October was one hell of energy between the audience and us, that felt great! We had some great shows on the older tours, I remember Paris and London being fun, same as Roadburn, Norway, House Of The Holy, Hell Over Hammaburg and our first ever show on Acherontic Arts Festival of course!

 Our performance is quite an “anti -performance” ,I  would say. We are there, but we are not important as individuals. The music must speak, we try to create a special energy and sometimes we are able to transport this to the audience, they give it back to us and we have a wonderful night.

 M: But we evolved in our stage to audience communication. Still the songs we play is more important than our stage performance but the connection to the audience, weather they enjoy it or not, is also a big impact.


8.You have also been a part of splits with 'King Dude' and 'The Ruins Of Beverast', what are your thoughts on the other bands that had participated on the recording?

We did a split with King Dude, yes, and there is the tour tape that also includes The Ruins Of Beverast. Both absolutely great artists and friends to us. They are family. T.J from King Dude has a performance on one track on "Nacht", he does a perfect job with his dark voice. Other bands are not included on that album. We have some guests, like a german theatre actress speaking a poem etc.

 


9.On a worldwide level how have your fans reacted to your newer material?

T: We can´t say yet, the album "Nacht" is just about to be released. I guess a lot of old school metal dudes will hate it and there will be folks listen to it secretly as it is too genre-ignoring.

The last LP "Feuer" was beloved as far as I remember. "Nacht" will be a love or total hate thing.

 M: On a worldwide level, I would like to learn more about reactions about every release. But with NACHT, yes. Love or Hate.


10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

T: More wide, less boundaries, more unexpected tunes on the other hand, but some traditional stuff on the other. We are working on finalizing "Tod", which will be the third part of FEUER, NACHT und TOD. Expect some ambient but orchestral sound, at least a bit. Then we already work on what follows after. It will be full of Soul I hope…

M: For every song we seek the appropriate measures.

 


11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

T: Ok, like mentioned before, a lot of styles and bands, too much to count. Stuff from the 80ies and 90ies when Pop music was still good, a lot of alternative and independent music, punk, metal (yeah of course the darkness and hopelessness of black metal), but also classical tunes from past to modern. We also get our influences from theatre plays, art, good books and philosophy. There is some rare good new tunes coming out here and then nowadays, but 90% of all stuff is just an repetition of hypes and such which really can be a bore...it is always good when you have a good tunes and melody and something to say with your own sound and in your own way.

(Dolch)/Nacht/Van Records/2022 Full Length Review

 


  (Dolch)  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  started  out  as  a  mixture  of  black,  doom  metal  and  drone  and  on  this  recording  goes  for  more  of  a  mixture  of  post  punk,  ambient  and  drone  with  some  touches  of  doom  metal  2022  album  "Nacht"  which  will be  released  in  February  by  Van  Records.


  Dark  ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  a  few  seconds  later  while  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of t he  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  the  music  also  mixing  in  some  touches  of  post  punk  and  the  slower  riffing  also  adds  in  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal.


  Atmospheric  sounding  drones  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  while  one  track  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  whispers.  Clear  male  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  some  of  the  drum  beats  also  being  programmed  as  well  as  a  later  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  the  whole  album  also  sticks  to  a  slower  direction.


  On  this  recording  (Dolch)  moves  away  from  the  black  emtal  elements  of  previous  releases  and  brings  in  more  of  a  mixture  of  post  punk,  darkwave,  dark  ambient  and  drone  as  well  as  mixing  in  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal  at  times.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Night  Time  and  Darkness  themes.


  In  my  opinion  (Dolch)  are  a  very  decent  sounding  mixture  of  post  punk,  darkwave,  dark  ambient  and  drone  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Lights  Out"  "Into  The  Night"  "Bird  of  Prey"  and  "Coda".  7/5  OUT  OF  10.

Nomvdic Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

James: Well since we released back in July I’ve been hard at work on press and promo for the album, to try and get the music in front of people. I’ve also been thinking hard on ideas to keep the band and album relevant since we can’t tour the record

2.A few months back you had released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

James: ‘Euphoria’ is definitely very different from our previous release “Horror” conceptually, so I think the biggest sound difference comes from the subject matter. So, Horror sounds like “horror” as a concept, and Euphoria sounds rather “euphoric”, haha.

3.The lyrics on the new recording are a concept album, can you tell us a little bit more about the story you have covered with this release?

James: From a very broad perspective, I guess I’m covering the general human experience of ups and downs, and how thoughtfulness and introspection can breed even deeper and darker experiences and feelings, as opposed to “ignorance is bliss”. Personally, the story in the album is sort of my justification for feeling like shit about certain things haha.

4.In the beginning you where known as 'As Crusaders Depart' then 'Nomadic' what was the cause of the name changes?

James: Haha, As Crusaders Depart is not this band. Two previous members of this band were in that band, but they’re not the same. Nomadic started in early 2016. We are still Nomadic but it’s branded with the V because there’s another artist called “Nomadic”. I still refer to it with the A though

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Nomvdic'?

James: I didn’t name the band unfortunately, so it doesn’t really mean anything to me. I think the ‘V’ is dumb but we had already garnered some attention as “Nomadic” so a total name change was out of question, and we just started stylizing it with the V. I guess the cool thing about it is we’re undeniably the only thing that will show up when you search “NOMVDIC”

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork on the new album cover?

James: Yes! I love our symbol! The “-∀-“ thing. I guess that’s the one good thing to come out of the upside-down A. I really made it a point to not put our band name on the front cover of the album or any of the album merch. Euphoria isn’t about us as a band, it’s about the music, and I want that symbol to embody that. It’s very intentional. Also, aesthetically, I wanted Euphoria to be very very colorful to represent feelings and the human experience.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

James: Oh man. Our tour with The Faceless was phenomenal. The shows in Joliet IL, St. paul MN, and Kalamazoo MI really stand out. We headlined a festival that sold out back in 2018 and that’s one of the best shows I’ve ever played, so much fun. I just really enjoy playing shows. Our live performance is very active and very theatrical. We play to our album back track (we’re not cheating anything haha, I just mean all of the additional sounds are in the back track) so you still get the album experience, but you also get the added intensity of our high energy live show.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

James: I’m very proud of my work as an independent artist and releasing this album independently, and the releases performance given that it was independent inspires me even more to continue DIY. however I’m always down to work with people who share the same creative vision. I don’t think I could ever give that up. I’m so proud of this album and I love it so much.

9.The new album also got a huge score on the billboard charts in the first week, do you feel this is a very great accomplishment for an unsigned band?

James: Huge accomplishment. I’m so proud. So so proud. I love this album and love our fans. I could cry, it’s so cool.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of extreme metal?

James: I definitely thought it would be more jarring. But we seem to have fans in all corners of metal. I think any elitist of any group would not enjoy it as it’s not specifically death metal or specifically black metal or specifically metalcore, etc etc, but it dabbles a little bit into every single thing. So I think people who have an open mind and appreciate music generally seem to enjoy it. I’m happy with that. I can’t wait for more people to hear it.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

James: great question! I love blast beats, and I love big choruses and the pitched yelling-Gojira style vocal that I do. So i think all of that will remain. Other than that, we will see where the music takes us. I’ll be writing and collaborating with other people moving forward - people much more talented than me - so we’ll see how it’ll turn out. I have some cool concepts for records moving forward. I’d like to work on and release music at a higher frequency than before though.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

James: Another awesome question. Euphoria was super influenced by Gojira, The Contortionist, Deafheaven, Sleep Token, Now, Now, The Faceless, Fit For an Autopsy, Spiritbox, and Meshuggah.

As far as metal goes, I’ve been listening to a lot of Gojira to prepare for the new album. I’ve also been listening to Spiritbox and Oathbreaker. Fantastic bands. Uh, I recently revisited the most recent Vale of Pnath, that’s super good, and discovered Numenorean recently and think they’re great. Oh, and I’ve been on an Artificial Brain kick. Outside of metal, I’ve been listening to a lot of Incubus, Jacob Collier, Gamby, Angel Du$t, and Heilung.

13.What are some of your non musical interests?

James: I love traveling a lot. I’m actually visiting North Carolina right now while writing this. Hard to do during the pandemic, but renting a car is safer than flying. I work full time as a producer and mixing engineer, so I spend a lot of time working on audio. I also enjoy going for walks, eating great food, and spending time with my friends and cats.

Nomvdic/Euphoria/2020 CD Review


  Nomvdic  are  a  band  from  Florida  that  plays  a  mixture  of  post  black,  melodic  death,  progressive  metal,  djent  and  deathcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2020  album  "Euphoria".

  Melodic  guitar  leads  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavy  riffing  a  few  seconds  later  while  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  some  prog  and  djent  elements.  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  bringing  in  touches  of  Swedish  style  melodic  death  metal.

  Vocals  are  done  in  more  of  a  metalcore  style  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  black  metal  style  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  vocals  also  having  their  melodic  moments.

  Grim  screams  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  influences  of  deathcore  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  and  touches  of  blackgaze  can  also  be  heard  at  times and  some  tracks  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  covering  the  human  psyche.

  In  my  opinion  Nomvdic  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of   post  black,  melodic  death,  progressive  metal,  djent  and  deathcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Euphoria"  "Dysmorphia(Im  So  Sorry)"  "Dead  Oaks"  and  "Blue  Jay".  8out  of  10.

Ypres/Genus Vitiosum/Slow Burn Records/2019 EP Re-Issue Review


  Ypres  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  plays  a  mixture  of  atmospheric  black,  sludge  and  post  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  ep  "Genus  Vitiosum"  which  was  re-issued  in  2019  by  Slow Burn Records.

  A  very  slow  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  ep  and  also  introduces  elements  of  sludge  and  doom  metal.  Vocals  are  mostly  done  in  a  screaming  style  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal  style.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording.  At  times  the  music  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  along  with  a  decent  amount  of  black  metal  influences  as  well  as  the  vocals  also  adding  in  some  growls  and  hardcore  elements  at  times  and  all  of  the  music  also sticks  to  either  a  slow  or mid  tempo  style.

  Ypres  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  atmospheric  black,  sludge  and  post  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Ypres  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  atmospheric  black,  sludge  and  post  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ad  Gloriam  Ignorantial"  and  "Umwelt".  8  out  of  10.

Baradj Interview


1. Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

► Since the release, we've been working on some media content related to Hunnar: artworks, play-through videos, several music videos, interviews, and more. New interesting merch is coming soon as well. J At the same time, we prepare ourselves for a live show, the first one since the album release.

1. Можете ли вы рассказать нам о том, что происходило с группой с момента записи и релиза нового альбома?

► На данный момент мы работаем над различным медиа-контентом, который связан с альбомом Hunnar: графическое оформление, видео play-through, несколько клипов, интервью и многое другое. Скоро у нас появится интересный мерч. J На вторую половину июля мы планируем подготовку к первым выступлениям с момента выхода альбома.

2. Recently you have released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?


►Alex: Well, it would be easier to say what it has in common with previous albums. When the work on Hunnar was about to start, even at that time, it was pretty clear, that the musical idea, structure and sound features will be different from the previous releases, but it's still Baradj. Perhaps, the melodic elements and some part of songwriting (structural) elements, which we used in Hunnar, may have something in common with Nardughan and Triptych, our previous studio records.

Djonathan: The new release is connected with the old ones through their concept and idea, while the difference is in the sound’s progression and production. Album Алтынчәч was done in 2006 inspired by old folk-metal. Nardughan 2012 was also folk-metal, but mixed with fresh melodic death and metalcore. The next one, EP Tryptich 2013 is the beginning of post-folk-metal. And the new release Hunnar is the mix of the old Baradj and the new one, in both sound and the band’s line-up.

We added vocals to post-folk-metal, made more atmospheric sound, and the result is album Hunnar. The album’s bonus track #14 Boygala ham Laish is an allusion to Алтынчәч 2006, a remake of a khiyal from that demo-album. Also, it is worth noting that Hunnar took 6 years to create, which is also its difference from previous releases.
2. Недавно вы выпустили новый альбом, чем с музыкальной точки зрения он отличается от материала, который вы выпустили до этого?

►Alex: Честно говоря, проще сказать, что у него есть общего с предыдущими альбомами. Когда мы были близки к началу работы над Hunnar, даже тогда было вполне очевидно, что музыкальная концепция, структура и звучание будут отличаться от предыдущих релизов группы, при этом это по-прежнему Барадж. Возможно, что у мелодических элементов и некоторой части структурных элементов, которые мы использовали в альбоме, могут иметь что-то общее с альбомом Nardughan и EP Tryptich, нашими предыдущими студийными записями.

Djonathan: Связь между старыми и новыми релизов – это ее концепция и идея, а отличие в прогрессии звука и ее извлечение. Альбом Алтынчәч 2006 был написан в духе старого фолк метала. Пластинка Нардуган 2012 была написана в том же стиле фолк метала, но с примесью свежего мелодик-дэт-метала и металкора. Следом вышла студийная работа ЕP Триптих 2013 является началом жанра post folk metal. Новый релиз "Гунны" – это смесь старого Бараджа с новым. Как и в звуке, так и в составе.

Мы добавили вокал к Post folk metal жанру, добились более атмосферного звучания. и получился альбом Hunnar. Бонус трек, который мы добавили в альбом, является отсылкой к первому альбому Алтынчәч 2006. Мы переписали один инструментальный хыял «Бойгала и Лаиш», который уже выходил в первом демо-альбоме. Также стоит отметить, что альбом Гунны формировался 6 лет, это тоже отличает его от предыдущих релизов.

3. The lyrics on the new recording are a concept album, can you tell us a little bit more about the story you had covered on the album?

►The new record’s track list builds a sequence that corresponds to the chronology of historical events in Asia and Europe starting from the fall of Roman Empire and nomadic invasion. Each track describes a story of historic figures or the characters of myths and legends of ancient Bulgarian ethnicity.

We are going to post a series of publications describing the detailed story behind each of the record’s tracks.
3. В текстах песен заложена концепция альбома, можете ли вы рассказать нам немного подробнее об истории, которая была рассказана в альбоме?

►Треклист нового альбома соответствует хронологической последовательности исторических событий в Азии и Европе, начиная с падения Римской Империи и вторжения кочевников. Каждый трек рассказывает об исторической личности либо о персонаже из мифов и легенд древне-булгарского этноса.

Мы планируем опубликовать серию постов, в которых мы более подробно расскажем историю, стоящую за каждым из треков пластинки.

4. You also have some lyrics that deal with Tengrism and Bulgarian Folklore, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?


►These elements do really have place to be. As our lyrics are inspired with the history of the nations, the cultural experiences of these epochs are highlighted as well. This is actually one our base goals – to share these myths and legends shaped and delivered with the music. We see our mission as not only to promote our native culture, but also to encourage people to discover and remember their own roots.

4. У вас также есть тексты, имеющие отношение к булгарскому фольклору и тенгризму, не могли бы вы рассказать нам немного больше о вашем интересе в этих темах?

►Это действительно имеет место быть. Поскольку тексты наших песен вдохновлены историей народов, культурным особенностям тех эпох мы также уделяем особое внимание. Одна из наших основных целей – делиться этими мифами и легендами, заключенными и передаваемыми в форме музыкального творчества. Мы считаем, что наша миссия заключается не только в популяризации и развитию нашей родной культуры, но и в том, чтобы призвать людей к изучению своих собственных корней и хранению памяти о них.

5. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Baradj'?

►According to legends, Baradj is the name of the dragon (a chimaera of three animals – Snow Leopard, Snake and Falcon) that lived on the place of Şaytan qalası (Shaytan’s castle, also known as "Yelabuga settlement"), a 10th century’s fortress in the town of Yelabuga, ruins of which are still there. The dragon protected Bulgarians from all evil spirits and wars. One of varations of this dragon can even be found on Kazan city's emblem (Zilant is Baradj, the thing is that archaeologists found a different name for it based on Tatar word “yılan/елан"). So even the name of the band comes out from Bulgarian folklore.

5. В чем значение названия "Baradj", и чем оно было вдохновлено?

►Согласно легендам, Барадж – это имя дракона (химера из трех животных – Снежный Барс, Змей и Сокол), жившего на месте Чертового городища (Шайтан каласы, Елабужское городище), крепости, построенной в 10-м веке, руины которой по-прежнему сохранились в городе Елабуга. Дракон Барадж защищал булгар от всех злых духов и войн. Одну из вариаций этого дракона можно найти даже на гербе города Казани (Зилант – это Барадж, только ученые археологи нашли ему другое название исходя из татарского слова Елан (змей)) . Поэтому даже название группы происходит из булгарского фольклора.

6. Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

►This cover is a digital artwork that was made by Djonathan Lindaive (band's guitar player, singer and founder) based on Bulat Gilvanov's picture. Bulat is a modern painter, and he's our close friend who has influenced the band a lot, and even gave the band a hint about its name back in 2003. Bulat created most of the paintings that are displayed on our album covers, wrote lyrics for many songs of Baradj, including Altynchach and Bolgar Dalasy from the new album.

6. Можете ли вы рассказать нам немного больше об оформлении обложки нового альбома?

►Обложка альбома Hunnar – это графическая работа Джонатана Линдэйва (гитариста, вокалиста и основателя группы), сделанная на основе картин Булата Гильванова. Булат – современный художник, он близок к самой группе и значительно повлиял на нас, начиная с того, что подсказал само название для группы еще в 2003 году. Булат создал большинство картин, которые изображены на обложках наших альбомов, является автором текстов многих песен нашей группы, включая Altynchach и Bolgar Dalasy из нового альбома.

nnar7. What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

►It's not so easy to point out a specific show because there were many of them since 2003. What for our live performances, we're currently working on it as we having a first live show after a big break, and literally it's gonna be our 3rd show in the current line-up. All of us have reached the understanding that a live performance should be aesthetic and sincere.
7. Какие из концертов, которые были даны группой за годы ее существования вы можете назвать лучшими, а также как бы вы описали свое выступление на сцене?

►Выделить какое-то отдельное представление сложно, поскольку их было достаточно много с 2003 года. Что касается наших живых выступлений, в данный момент мы готовимся к нашему первому шоу после долгого перерыва, и это будет в буквальном смысле наше третье выступление в нашем текущем составе. Мы пришли к тому, что живое выступление должно быть эстетичным и искренним.
8. Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

►For now, we have approved the first big festivals of youth-oriented ethnic music. As regards a tour, we can't announce any exact information right now, but will do that in September, so stay tuned!

9. Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

►Actually, it seems better for us to stay an independent DIY band, however, this is a classical case "never say never". Currently, we’re relying on our own funds, digital sales and fan donations, but if we get a reliable proposal from a good label, we would be interested to discuss it.

9. В настоящий момент вы не подписаны на лейбл. Ищете ли вы для себя лейбл, получали ли подобные предложения?

►Честно говоря, наилучший вариант для нас – оставаться независимой DIY-группой, хотя это и классический случай "никогда не говори никогда". В данный момент мы сами занимаемся всей издательской деятельностью, ведем ее в на свои средства, плюс доход от цифровых продаж и донаты от поклонников, но если мы получим надежное предложение от хорошего лейбла, нам будет интересно его обсудить.
10. On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of post and folk metal?

►According to the latest data, Hunnar is already the most listened of all of our releases ever, and it's based only on Bandcamp stats, as the album is available exclusively there at this moment. We were quite surprised, for example, that the US is one of the "top-listening" regions. We have a lot of listeners across Europe, especially in Bulgaria and Turkey.

As for genre, it appears that many post and folk metal listeners find our music interesting enough. We get new reviews for the album every week and will share some of them in our social media.

10. Какова была реакция фанатов пост-метала и фолк-метала на вашу музыку, если рассматривать глобальный уровень?

►Согласно последним данным, альбом Hunnar уже является самым прослушиваемым из всех наших релизов, и это только данные с Bandcamp, поскольку альбом на данный момент доступен исключительно на этом ресурсе. Мы были удивлены, например, тем, что США являются одним из самых слушающих регионов. Также у нас достаточно много слушателей по всей Европе, особенно в Болгарии и Турции.

Что касается жанра, то похоже, что многие любители жанров пост-метал и фолк-метал находят нашу музыку интересной. Мы получаем новые рецензии на альбом каждую неделю и будем делиться некоторыми из них  наших соцсетях.
11. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

►Can't make any forecast, but even for today, our early demos of the new songs sound somewhat differently, but it is a follow-up to Hunnar. So the main goal for us is still the same – to create a brand new music while preserving the band's authenticity and familiar sound.

11. Как вы считаете, каково будет дальнейшее развитие музыки вашей группы?

►Пока мы не можем давать каких-либо прогнозов, но даже на сегодня наши ранние демо-записи новых песен звучат несколько иначе, при этом являясь продолжением альбома Hunnar. Поэтому основная цель с музыкальной точки зрения остается той же – создавать совершенно новую музыку, сохраняя аутентичность группы и узнаваемое звучание.
12. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

►Each of us has totally different playlists. There are some common artists between them, but it's quite hard to mark exact artists that had influence, or how one or another artist has influenced our music. However, it’s important to note that our fans and reviewers mention such names as Opeth, Amorphis, Pelican, Eluveitie, In Flames, Brontide, Holding Onto Hope, Insomnium, Long Distance Calling, Cellar Darling, Ирбис, Deva Obida, Yaşru, Tengger Cavalry, Scale The Summit, pg.lost, Sunpocrisy, Syberia, Toundra, Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster.

►We also give time to another arts and hobbies, like visual and digital art, clothes design, electronic music, photography, traveling, trekking, languages and self-education. Sometimes, it could also be jam sessions, video games, some scientific content found on the Internet, education of a cat or even just slopping around for some time J

Eremite/All Things Merge Into One/Taxi Driver Records/2014 CD Review


  This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Italy's  Eremite  which  continues  the  black,  sludge  and  post  metal  mixture  of  the  previous  material  and  the  album  is  called  "All  Things  Merge  into  One"  and  was  released  by  Taxi  Driver  Records.

  Aggressive  screams  start  off  the  album  along  with  a  very  heavy  sound  also  kicking  in  and  when  the  music  speeds  up a   great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  melodic  riffs  can  be  heard  giving  the  music  more  of  a  black  metal  feeling  and  atmospheric  sounds  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background  at  times.

  Elements  of  post  metal  and  hardcore  can be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  songs  and  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  clean  and  acoustic  guitars  are  also  utilized  at  times  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Most  of  the  songs  are  very  long and  epic  in  length  and  the  fast  riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  when  keyboards a re  utilized  they  add  in  a  touch  of  classical  music  while  also  having  a  powerful  presence  on  the  instrumental  tracks  and  one  song  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  melodic  guitar  leads  and  clean  singing  is  also  added  onto  the  last  track.

 Eremite  show  a  great  amount  of  progression  on  the  recording  adding  in  shorter  songs  and  also  letting  the  atmospheric  black  and  post  metal  elements  have  more  of  a  powerful  effect  while  the  sludge  and  doom  metal  influences  are  still  a  very  dominant  part  of  the  recording,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Eremite  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  sludge  and  post  metal,  you  should  enjoy t his  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Past  Became  My  Future"  and  "Bowing  To  The  Mountain".  8  out  of  10.

Eremite/Dragonarius/Taxi Driver Records/2013 Full length Review


  Eremite  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  plays  a  mixture  of    post,  black and  sludge  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "Dragonarius"  which  was  released  by  Taxi  Driver  Records.

  Drum  beats  start  off  the  album  along  with  a  distorted  bass  guitar  a  few  seconds  alter  that  slowly  starts  to  evolve  into  a  heavier  sound  which  also  brings  elements  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  onto  the  recording  and  after  a  few  minutes  aggressive  vocals  make  their  presence  known  on  the  recording  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  bass  guitar  leads.

  At  times  the  music  can  be  very  atmospheric  along  with  some  clean  playing  that  also  brings  in  a  touch  of  post  rock  and  the  riffs and  leads  also  get  very  melodic  at  times  bringing  in  tremolo  picking  that  is  more  more  to  black  metal  and  both  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  melodic  singing  and  psychedelic  sounds  and  the  music  speeds  up  briefly  on  the  second  song  and  the  album  closes  with  some  tragic  sounding  keyboards.

  Eremite  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  post  black  metal,  sludge  and  doom  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  very  dark  and  heavy  sounding  recording,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Eremite  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  post  black  metal,  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of t hose  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Not  Of  This  World".  8  out  of  10.

Abaton/Viscera///-Diade(ms)/Sentinent Ruin Laboratories/2015 Split EP Review


  This  is  a  review  of  a split  ep  between  Italy's  Abaton  and  Viscera///  which  was  released  by  Sentinent  Ruin  Laboratories   and   with  Abaton  a  band  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  sludge  and  doom  teaming  up  with  Viscera///  a  sludge/post  metal  band.

  A  very  heavy  sludge  metal  sound  starts  off  their  side  of  the  split  along  with  some  melodies  and  screaming  vocals  that  also  use  growls  and  a  few  seconds  alter  elements  of  crust  and  black  metal  are  added  into  the  music  and  the  music  also  speeds  up  at  times  and  brings  in  a  small  amount  pf  blast  beats  while  the  slower  sections  are  heavily  influenced  by  doom  metal.

  Throughout  the  recording  there  is  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  melodies  bring  in  a  lot  of  post  metal  elements  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  second  track  sticks  to  mostly  a slow  and  melodic  style  of  doom/sludge  metal  and  also  brings  in  a  brief use  of  guitar  leads  and  also  speeds  up  towards  the  end.

  Abaton  and  Viscera///  team  up together  and  mix  there  different styles  together  to  create  a  very  dark  and  heavy  ep  that  mixes  black,  death  metal,  doom,  sludge,  and  post  metal  together  to  create  an  original  sound,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Abaton  and  Viscera/// and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  post  metal,  sludge and  doom,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Special  needs".  8  out  of  10.
