Whispered are a band from Finland that plays a mixture of melodic death metal and Japanese folk music and this is a review of their 2016 album "Metsutan Songs Of the Void" which will be released in May as a joint effort between Redhouse FMP and Inverse Records.
Japanese folk instruments start off the album along with some chants in the background and tribal beats and they also mix in some symphonic elements at times and after the intro they mix it in with more of a heavier sound and also mix in back up shouts and melodic guitar leads while t he riffs also use a great amount of melody.
Vocals bring in a mixture of both black metal screams and death metal growls and the faster sections of the songs also use a great amount of blast beats and throughout the recording there is a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and some of the tracks a re very long and epic in length and some of the faster riffs also utilize a great amount of tremolo picking and there is also a brief use of spoken word parts on some of the songs while other t racks also use chants and there is also a brief use of acoustic guitars while the last track brings in male and female choirs.
Whispered plays a musical style that takes the melodic and symphonic sides of black and death metal and mixes them with Japanese folk music to add something different and original to the folk metal genre, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Samauri, Bushido and Japanese legends.
In my opinion Whispered are a very great sounding mixture of melodic black, death metal and Japanese folk music and if you are looking for something original, you should check out t his band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Strike!" "Kensei" "Warriors of Yama" and "Bloodred Shores Of Enoshima". 8/2 out of 10.
