Ossilegium are a band from Chicago, Illinois that plays a melodic mixture of black and death metal and this is a review of their 2024 album "The Gods Below" which will be released in may by Personal Records.
A very fast and melodic sound starts off the album along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast b eats. Vocals are a mixture of black metal screams and death metal growls while the music is also very heavily rooted in the 90's Swedish tradition and all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style. Back up shouts are also added on a couple of tracks along with one song also adding in a brief use of spoken word parts as well as some of the songs also being long and epic in length and they also add in a couple of classical guitar instrumentals.
Ossilegium plays a musical style that goes back to the mid 90's era of Swedish melodic black/death metal. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Occultism, Science Fiction, Fantasy and Literature themes.
In my opinion Ossilegium are a very great sounding melodic mixture of black and death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Nightborn" "Beyond The Clandestine" and "The Gods Below". 8 out of 10.
