Messora/The Door/2019 CD Review

Messora  are  a band  from  Montreal,  Quebec,  Canada  that  plays  a  progressive  and  melodic  mixture  of  black,  doom  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2019 album  "The  Door".

A  very  dark  and  demonic  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  adding  in  some  clean  playing  which  is  also  added  into  a  lot  of  parts  of  the  music.  Elements  of  prog  emtal  can  be  heard  in  some  of  the  heavier  riffing  while  the  vocals  also  add  in a  mixture  of  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  screams.

All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  one  of  the  tracks  being    an  acoustic  instrumental.  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  as  well  as  one  track  also  introducing  clean  vocals  onto  the  recording  and  throughout  the  album  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  some  songs  also  show  an  influence  of  thrash  metal  and  one  track  also  introduces  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

In  my  opinion  Messora  are  a  very  great  sounding  melodic  and  progressive  mixture  of  black,  doom  and death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Door"  and  "The  Tide".  8  out  of  10.

Atlas Entity Interview

1. For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Atlas Entity, a progressive metal band based out of the Tampa Bay Area in Florida, is my solo project that I created after my last band split up around 2015. Since then I’ve released a four-song EP titled Enceladus, and on June 14 I’m releasing my first 8-song full-length album, Beneath the Cosmic Silence. On both releases I play guitars, bass, keys, and do vocals. Each release features different session musicians including Samus Paulicelli on drums (Decrepit Birth, Devin Townsend) and guest solos by Rafael Trujillo (Obscura) and Mark Hawkins (LVM Trio, Devolved). Even if it does take a bit of time between releases, I intend to continue writing new material and featuring talented musicians that I’m inspired by and lucky enough to work with.

2.In June you have a full length coming out, musically how does it differ from the ep you had released in 2015?

Beneath the Cosmic Silence differs from my first EP as it focuses more on composition and atmosphere rather than raw brutality and technicality. Now of course there’s plenty of technical and heavy parts in the full length, but I feel like each song has its own organic flow that tells a story. I would definitely say that the new release is a much more relaxed approach to Atlas Entity and my writing style. Beneath the Cosmic Silence also has lyrics designed around stories originating the western US, ghosts, and a general appreciation of nature, rather than the concept-based space themes of Enceladus.

3.This is your first release in 4 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

Life has been busy since then! Besides writing and recording music, I help run my family business and I also have a wonderful girlfriend and dog that I love spending time with and traveling with. Writing, recording, designing, and coordinating with companies and other musicians to create a full-length album takes an enormous amount of time, effort and money, especially when handling it on your own. At times it was hard to find the right balance between music, life, work, and everything else but in the end, it worked out and I ended up with a product that I’m truly proud of.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with the newer music?

As I mentioned above, Beneath the Cosmic Silence has lyrics written about stories originating the western US, ghosts, and a general appreciation of nature. Over the past few years we have been traveling a lot and we’ve seen some amazing places out in the western United States that have really inspired me. I’ve always loved nature and I’m frequently out hiking in local state parks and wildlife preserves, but the towering mountains and plummeting gorges of the natural landscape out there provide such an amazing contrast to the swampy, humid, and relatively flat scenery that Florida provides.

5.On your previous ep you had explored space themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic?

I’ve always been interested in astronomy and in turn, science fiction. Anything from sci-fi books, comics, terrible B sci-fi movies, I’m all about it. I’m also a firm believer that we’re not alone in the universe – it is wayyy too large for us to be all alone here. I’d say that’s where most of the inspiration for Enceladus came from. Saturn’s moon, Enceladus, has an icy surface that’s about 20 miles thick. Due to its elliptical orbit around Saturn, the gravitational pull squeezes and flexes the moon enough that it can melt some of the ice underneath the surface. This means that there could be a giant sub-surface ocean that has existed there for millions, if not billions of years. If there’s liquid water, I’d bet that there’s some sort of life there.

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Atlas Entity'?

So the Atlas Entity is a planet-devouring cosmic being which is first introduced in the Enceladus EP. Enceladus is the first entry of a 3-part concept series about a group of space explorers that land a manned mission on Saturn’s moon Enceladus and (unfortunately) find sentient life below the frozen surface. The first EP scratches the surface of the story and the next two EPs will continue the saga. On the shirts available in our merch shop you can see an awesome depiction of the Atlas Entity.

7.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The cover artwork is a photo I took in Grand Canyon National Park – what an experience that was. On the drive in, we’re going through a hot, arid, Arizona desert. Once we get into the park and start gaining elevation, it became colder and colder until we started seeing patches of white on the ground. Soon enough the temperature drops below 30*F and it starts snowing HARD. I couldn’t really feel my hands or my face at this point, but I managed to get a couple good pics before we had to leave. The album cover on Beneath the Cosmic Silence is one of them.

8.Originally the band started out as a solo project, what was the decision behind adding in other members?

The band still is a solo project. I write the majority of the material and then I’ll often work with session musicians to help fill in the gaps for drums and guest solos. I can play drums, but I don’t have the facilities to record at the quality I want, nor do I possess the skill that someone like Samus does.

9. Currently the band us unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

I’ve received some interest from a few smaller labels, but no offers or anything that would meet the needs of Atlas Entity. I wouldn’t say that I’m actively looking for a label, but I’d be glad to entertain any offers that could lend success to the project.

10. On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of prog, black and death metal?

So far, the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive – especially from overseas fans. Atlas Entity is based in the US, so it’s very interesting to me that the majority of purchases and pre-orders come from other countries like the UK, Canada, Russia, Germany, and Portugal. I absolutely love being able to send the music I make to people all over the world.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

The writing continues – as it always will! I think next up I’m going to finish up a single or maybe another EP along the same lines as the first EP. I have a couple of new ideas that I’m piecing together but I’m also looking to continue the Enceladus story.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Enceladus was heavily inspired by bands like Between the Buried and Me, The Helix Nebula, Ne Obliviscaris, Arsis, and more. During the writing process of Beneath the Cosmic Silence, I was listening to a lot of black metal/folk metal – especially bands like Falls of Rauros, Agalloch, and Celephaïs. If you haven’t heard Monad by Celephaïs, do yourself a favor and give that a listen through. More recently I’ve been listening to these awesome bands and albums on heavy rotation: Wide Eyes – Paradoxica, The Omnific – The Mind’s Eye, Obscura – Diluvium, Andy James – Arrival, Devin Townsend – Empath, and (wild card, also not new) Queensryche – Operation Mindcrime.

13.What are some of your non-musical interests?

Some of my non-musical interests include (in no particular order): hiking, travel, drawing/painting, photography, video games, doing cool stuff with my girlfriend, playing with my dog, and recently I’ve become really interested in house plants, ha.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I’d just like to say thanks again for having me and thanks to everyone who’s purchased or listened to Atlas Entity. Atlas Entity is my labor of love and I while it may take a bit of time between releases, I intend to keep writing and putting new music out there. Thank you, thank you, and thank you.

Sure, We are AHL SINA Band from Egypt, Germany and USA, the band was originally  formed in Egypt in 2009 founded by our Singer “Moustafa Troll” We want to sound completely different! Making music that doesn’t sound like other bands! Our lyrical message is about human conflicts and peace!

2. Recently you have released your first full length, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style you went for on the recording.

AHL SINA is an Oriental Extreme Metal inspired mainly by the old legacy of the Egyptian folklore music mixed with old school Metal. In this record We went through many different styles, you will find the music flow change from one riff to another, from classic rock to the extreme melodic Death & Black metal.

3. The band has been around since 2009 but you waited until 2019 to release the first album, can you tell us a little bit more about the earlier years?

Actually, the beginning was earlier than 2009, it was Me, Shung & Ronnie alone in a band called (BEYOND EAST). In 2005 we recorded our first EP then I left the band for some health issues! In 2009 I returned to Cairo from Sinai and met with Shung, I told him about the idea of AHL SINA & the debut album concept of 'Troops of Pain', we wrote together “as usual” few new songs then we formed a complete line up of 9 members, performed in some festival in Cairo for three times till 2014, the lineup changed a lot during that time, and I felt it wouldn’t be the right step to record the album back then. In 2015 I moved to Germany and it took around two years to find the right members. I found our drummer Shaadie from USA, Stefanie (Violin) & Marcel (Bass guitar) from Germany and of course we all consider them a great gift to AHL SINA, then our professional & talented Producer ‘Joey Jones’ so it was just the right time to record this album.

4. The lyrics on the recording are a concept album, can you tell us a little bit more about the story you cover with your songwriting?

The album has a flow of events in the sequence of the songs. From the track 1 to track 8, the story unfolds of creation, humanity and what we have become. The main focus is on racism and bigotry, which we criticize in our album, and the story of false preachers in various religious institutions.

Track 1, "The Gift", is about the creation of the Earth, how untouched & virgin it was and how harmonious everything was.

Track 2, "Vowed", describes how evil swept through the Earth & how it poisoned generation after generation.

Tracks 3, 4 & 5: As you can see on the album cover artwork, three false preachers are represented watching the Earth burning because of their corrupt preaching, who abused peaceful messages and turned them into hate, separation, war, racism and bigotry.

Track 6, "Beyond the East", describes how the Eastern civilization was thriving and offered humanity enlightenment, science and justice.

Track 7, "No Boundaries - The Fall of Utopia": AHL SINA is destroying racism and bigotry.

Track 8, "Troops of Pain": This is the peaceful message that AHL SINA is aspiring to and hoping for. Troops of pain are those who suffered and died as a result of such hypocrisy, those who bared the consequence of such sinister, conniving and ongoing conspiracy. Our message is a message of peace that sheds light on this perpetual global topic that existed since the beginning of time, passing from one era to the next for centuries till the end of time. Our message is directed against those false preachers from different faiths, who stained what was supposed to be pure, that turned man against his brother till destruction prevailed!

Track 9, "Regret": An instrumental song/outro for which we used a fusion of two different instruments, one from the West and one from the East, hoping that music can unite us all and that’s why we chose this title.

5. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'AHL SINA'?

AHL SINA simply means people of Sinai, but I had a specific reason for choosing this name. Sinai is a very peaceful place for all human beings, cultures and races. People can live there together in peace, no matter where they come from or what they believe.

6. Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the album cover/

The three represented false preachers from the three monotheistic religions! Those who abused any peaceful messages and turned it into hate, separation, war, racism & bigotry! Watching the earth burning is enough proof to their corrupt preaching!

7. All of the band members live in different parts of the world, can you tell us how this works out in the recording process?

The foundation of the line-up was not easy, that’s why we had several changes between 2009 back home in Egypt, when the band started, and 2014, except for the four rooted members! Me, my music mate Shung, the guitarist and the music composer of this album, and the oriental section Ahmed Eskandarny on nay flutes and Amr Zanaty on percussion. After I moved to Germany I was lucky enough to find Shaadie Khoury our drummer. Shaadie is a very well known drummer in the Egyptian scene. He moved to America back in '97
I then found Stefanie Pfaffenzeller from the Frankfurt Radio Symphony to be our violinist. I heard her in a chamber music concert as a soloist and she truly amazed me. I offered her to meet and listen to our album guide. Marcel Hauptmann on bass guitar, I play with Marcel in Thrash Metal Band called WAR AGENDA.

It was a big risk to work on an album between three different continents, ONLINE, and the members would NOT meet! I thought for many nights that it would never work, but I was wrong. It worked better than we ever imagined! I organized everything from Germany. The recording started in Cairo - Egypt, all guitars, nay flutes, percussion and keyboards. Then the studio in Cairo transferred all the recorded materials (stems) to me. Then we recorded the violin and bass guitar here in Germany. I added the violin and bass lines (stems) to the others and transferred them to the USA for the drum recording. Then everything was transferred back to me in Germany to finish the recording process with my vocals. That means: Every musician in the band added his own lines that suit the guide of our album.

8. Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

Yes we received some deals from some labels but we are waiting for the right one!

9. On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of extreme metal?

It’s surprising somehow! We started having fans from the Classic scene as well since they considered the album as a Rock/Metal Opera! So far it’s really good and we are very happy about the feedback! However we still consider ourselves as an underground/new band and we need sometimes to get recognized by the metal scene worldwide.

10. What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are apart of?

Me & Marcel are working together in the new WAR AGENDA Album, Shaadie is doing some new music for  his band ULTRAMUNDANE, Stefanie is in her normal routine as a classic musician in the symphony orchestra, Ahmed is working with Egyptian well-known singers & Amr is doing many workshops and live concerts in the Latin/Jazz scene.

Most importantly, we all started writing the second AHL SINA Album.

11. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

You never know what the future brings but we are very motivated and hopefully we will some good chances to perform our music in some summer festivals in Europe.

12. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

AHL SINA's music as I mentioned before has a lot of inspirations to the legacy of the old Egyptian folklore music, when it comes to metal inspirations, we are old school Warriors!

13. What are some of your non musical interests?

Hiking. Reading, Meditation & walking in forests!

14. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thank you for interviewing us!

Ahl Sina/Troops Of Pain/2019 CD Review

Ahl  Sina  are  an  international  band  with  members  from  Egypt,  Germany  and  The  united  States  that  plays  a  mixture  of  Middle  Eastern  folk  music,  Progressive  and  extreme  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2019  album  "Troops  Of  Pain".

Ethnic  style  chanting  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  middle  eastern  folk  instruments  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  at  times.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

Clean  vocals  are  also  used  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  as  well  as  the  music  also  getting  very  progressive  sounding  at  times.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  music  also  has  its  symphonic  moments.  Death  metal  growls  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording.

Spoken  word  parts  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  music  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  percussion  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling  as  well  as  some  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  tracks.

A  great  amount  of  melody  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  and  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  are  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  the  songs  also  getting  more  diverse  as  the  album  progresses  along  with  the  music  incorporating  more  stringed  instruments.  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  that  revolves  around  the  history  of  humanity's  conflicts.

In  my  opinion  Ahl  Sina  are a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  oriental,  middle  eastern  fol  music,  progressive  and  extreme  metal  and  if  you  are  looking  for  something  very  original,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Gift"  "Miracle  To  Demise"  and  "Troops  of  Pain".  8  out  of  10.

Siberian/Live At Studio Underjord/The Sign Records/2019 EP Review

Siberian  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  blackened  and  progressive  mixture  of  sludge  and  post  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  ep  "Live  At  Studio  Underjord"  which  will  be  released  in  February  by  the  Sign  Records.

Avant  garde  style  soundscapes  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  melodic  riffing  being  added  onto  the  recording  a  few  seconds  later.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  A  great  amount  of  melody  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  sludge  style  screams.

A  great  amount  of  post  metal  elements  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording.  At  times  the  music  gets  very  progressive  along  with  some  influences  from  the  more  atmospheric  side  of  black  metal  and  the  slow  riffs  also  bring  in  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal.

All  of  the  songs  are  recorded  live  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  clean  guitars  onto  the  recording.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  which  also  enhances  the  more  black  metal  side  of  the  bands  musical  style.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics cover  an  Orwellian  view  on  modern  society.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Siberian  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  progressive,  post,  black  and  sludge  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Axis  Mundi"  and  "Witness'.  8  out  of  10.

Omega Point Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the musical project these days?

I’m in the middle of promoting the album of course. I’m also trying to write new stuff, however the musical direction my writing is taking at the moment is a bit different from OMEGA POINT’s stuff. It’s more along the lines of “epic” and less “black metal”, you could say. So that’s why I don’t know if the next album will be an OMEGA POINT album or maybe some kind of solo record or even another project album.

2.So far you have released 2 albums this year, how do both of them differ musically?

The first album “The Descent” has a much rawer sound to it, it’s kinda more black metal than “Isolation”, you could say. You could say that I’ve explored a new sound for me with the first album and that I’ve taken it to the next step with “Isolation”. The second album is much more coherent than the first one. On the first one, I’ve had 3 singers and 2 bassists and no coherent lyrical concept, only outlines. On “Isolation” however, we don’t have such a mixture, we have Jonathan as the main singer, Maxi as the lyricist, Chris on drums and me doing the rest.
Also, what could explain the musical differences as well is that I’ve written “The Descent” in the middle of a personal, emotional crisis and “Isolation” is part of my recovery process. It still deals with a lot of the same moods, however the direction the music is taking is much clearer than on the first album.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored on both of the recordings?

OMEGA POINT deals with emotions such as despair, hate, anger and sadness. Like I’ve said before, I’ve let the people writing lyrics for the first album most of their freedom, thus creating an interesting mixture of impressions of their darker sides. It deals with thoughts about suicide, taking farewell and emotional issues.
The second album “Isolation” is more of a story. It’s about a protagonist whose friend has killed himself and who now must face different dark and negative emotions. Still fighting against those, his emotional state slowly gets worse and in the he has to face the same problems his friend has faced.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Omega Point'?

Well, it’s kinda weird to explain to be honest. But I’ll try. In the end, when everything collapses – talking in a broader sense - it ultimately means that everything will be nullified. Meaning that for example all of humanities achievements, all the big accomplishments as well as all our personal problems and goals will be for nothing. That may seem like an interesting thought from the perspective of someone who’s feeling suicidal, to be honest, because it kind of gives you a feeling of security. Everybody has to die and, in the end, when mankind, earth or even the universe is on the breach of collapse, it won’t matter what you have done – or not done.
That’s at least how I’ve looked at this topic from time to time. This of course isn’t fully congruent with the spiritual belief of the “Omega Point”, where everything in the universe is spiraling towards a final point of unification.
The original idea for this name is based on the lyrics for the song “At Omega Point”, which is written by Thomas Jahnke from Sadistic Sacrament.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the album?

This artwork was made by Danko Designs specifically for this album. You can of course interpret it in different ways. It could for example resemble a person that has hanged himself, though you cannot see the rope. It might be a metaphor for an “inner death”, the loss of your will to live. Of course, you can also interpret it as a person that is rising “into the light”, as in “rising to heaven”. But of course, you can interpret it in any way you want.

6.I have read that this is a studio project and your looking for a live line up to do some shows, how has that been working out so far?

That hasn’t been working out that well, to be honest. The singer Jonathan and me moving away hasn’t made trying to find a line up easier, which is why that is put on hold for the moment. I’m concentrating on song writing again now and I’m looking for another project I can take part in at my new center of life.

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

I have looked for labels in the past but I’ve decided to stay unsigned for now. This project still is kind of small and for most big labels, you have to buy yourself in to get a deal if you’re smaller. If there are labels interested though I will always reconsider because label support makes promotion and selling your music much easier.

8.What are some of the other bands or musical projects that the musicians that played on the recordings are a part of?

Starting off with the most known bands, Chris Dovas is currently the touring drummer for Vital Remains and the regular drummer for the Symphonic Metal Band Seven Spires. Maxi, who has also written the lyrics for “Isolation”, is creating a concept album himself right now under the name of “Quiet Observer”, and the first album consisted of musicians by the bands Sektor and Sadistic Sacrament.

9.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician in the future?

I want to continue with OMEGA POINT or some other personal projects for sure. Due to my affinity for covering, I could also see myself joining a touring band or another new band as a regular member.
I’m right now studying Sound And Music Production at the University Of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt, Germany, so producing other bands will also be coming up.

10.What are some of the bands or musical projects that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

At the moment, I like listening to bands like Myrkur, ColdWorld, Tantara, MaYan, Guilt Machine or Pain Of Salvation. Some of my evergreens are Wintersun, Coroner or Vektor.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

I love watching anime, other than that my life is pretty music-centered, I just love producing sounds, doing covers for my YouTube-Channel and making music in general. Sometimes I also like to code.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Yeah, thanks for the interview and the interesting questions. Of course I would be honoured if the people reading this would check out the album (https://open.spotify.com/album/37wdjT3nq0UsCbcoyU5IkU?si=qqtxIui4T5-6no5jBUrQdg).
