Sick To The Back Teeth Interview

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the project for those that have never heard of you before?

yes. sick to the back teeth is a solo music project where i record all kinds of different music. i put no restrictions on myself in terms of style or concept or rules. it's just whatever music i feel like doing. i started using the name in 2002, so this is the tenth year of doing this.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?

there's no one sound for me. i make rock, metal, noise, folk, electronic music, sometimes all in the same piece of music. there are no limitations. i will say that some of it takes an experimental approach but not all of it. and that most of my music is conceptual. especially if it doesn't sound like there's a concept. some of my music isn't about music at all.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the project explores with the music?

so many. i have some albums which deal with very specific subjects and i think these are relatively obvious. i don't like to explain them, though. they are meant to be interpreted by the listener. but speaking very broadly, i tend to come back to some themes often: love, sadness, nature, fantasy.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?

sick to the back teeth is an expression that means to be completely fed up of something. i just liked it.

5. Are there any other members involved with the project or is this solo?

it's just me. there are some rare cases where i've had guest musicians or collaborated with people and they are given credit on those songs. but it's mostly me writing all the songs and performing all the music.

6. Currently you are signed to Drowning, how did you get in contact with this label and how would you describe the support they have given you so far?

well, i am not signed to any label. but Drowning is great. i liked the releases that i heard and i liked the aesthetic so i sent in an album. i was glad that they decided to include it. i think it's a good fit.

7. On a worldwide level how has your music been recieved by fans of underground music?

i don't think it has been received much at all. this is the first interview i've been asked to do in five or six years so i don't think anyone is aware of me. about once a year i get an email from someone who says they liked something i did and that's nice. that's about all.

8. Are there any other projects besides this band or is this full time?

i just played in a metal band for a couple of years called Pegasus Void. i played guitar, sang and wrote the songs. our album is coming out soon. it's mostly doom metal but there are are elements of space rock and black metal as well. now i play in a rock duo called the Starling Quintet. it's not metal at all. but i'm never going to stop doing music as sick to the back teeth.

9. What direction do you see your music heaning into on futre releases?

hopefully all different directions. currently i have been recording and releasing one song every week on this blog: http://sick-to-the-back-teeth.tumblr.com/ i also put old releases and previously unreleased material on there.

i will be releasing a new musical score for a film very soon. probably a rock album after that. then, who knows?

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

all different kinds of stuff. although instead of musical influences, i would say that sick to the back teeth is most connected to the surrealist art movement and i would describe most of my music as surrealist music. i'm influenced by dreams.

11. Does Occultism play a role in the music?

no, but that is not to say that i haven't at some point been inspired by the idea of something related to occultism. i'm inspired by all sorts of different things.

12.Outside of music, what are some of your interests?

currently i have a weekly radio show on the greatest radio station in the world, WFMU. my show airs sundays at 3-6am EST and you can listen online at http://www.wfmu.org/

i also enjoy building instruments and effects. i'm writing my second novel.

13. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

thank you for taking an interest and i wish you the best of luck with your zine!

Thunderkraft Interview

1.Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?

Our band was organized in 2001. One spring evening four future participants of the band Thunderkraft, aka Us, came to the conclusion that every one of us is drawn to the creation of a new band, for the single purpose of expression of all that pent up creativity, which overwhelmed, blossomed and was overflowing us from within. Every one of us at that time was involved in various music projects, and their stylistical regimen would not allow us to unfold our creative potential fully. That way our band was born. During our existence a lot has changed, but our creative spirit has matured, and our dedication to improving our music has grown multifold. Our True Friends are always with us, they refine our worldly outlook and help our multifaceted development. Thuderkraft is a band which was founded in equal parts on both creativity and human qualities of its bandmembers, without this there would be no Thunderkraft.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?
If you listen to our music real well, then you will hear the sounds of endless space, ancient worlds and unforeseen future, on top of guitar riffs, keyboards and drums. You will be overwhelmed by the storm of emotions and vortex of feelings. The music from our subconscious will exactly translate the flight of our thoughts for you. Some listeners will hear tank cannonade and the flight of fine matter in our music, some will hear nuclear explosion and the quiet of cosmic vacuum, some will hear birds singing and the roar of a rocketship, some will hear the fluttering of butterfly wings next to a white lily and the noise of a diesel engine atop a nuclear icebreaking ship. The music of Our band is contradictory multifaceted, we believe that in our creations all areas of the universe are interwoven at the same time. Every listener will hear what he is thinking about and what he is living through, every emotion will find its reflection in our music.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
Our songs are full of poetry inspired by our subconscious. Different worlds give birth to different information streams; past, future and current are all reflected in our lyrics. In equal part, the greatest events of various moments in time, as well as the unknown circumstances of any space in the universe, did not leave us indifferent; all of those things inspired us to write the poetry you are hearing. The topics you are hearing in our lyrics came through time and space and, as a result, were ground by our consciousness, compiled by our subconscious and sculpted by the point of a pen on the plane of infinity. The lyrics flowing in our music forcefully multiplied its meaning. Our boundless desire to convey to the listener the essence of our topics created unexplainable, yet definitely easy to capture, superfine connection between lyrics and music in our songs. This connection increased the energy charge which our creations carry multifold.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the band name?
I will unveil a secret for you – Our band did not have the name Thuderkraft from the very beginning. We arrived at this moniker later, due to the growth in our outlook, through the manifestation of metaconsciousness. Powerful energy charge modulated by our desires generated the chain of sequential events, which influenced the understanding of the limitless. Multiple factors, created along the way, dissolved our doubts and increased our resolve. By bringing close the opposite and separating the unified, the name of our band was born. As much as you probably were able to understand the moniker Thunderkraft has a meaning which can be analyzed in different planes, it has diametrically opposite loaded meanings. The moniker of our band hides the unknown which can be understood by anyone, it has the infinity able to fit inside any man’s soul, and it obviously has an absolute meaning which carries in itself the solid nature of our universe, squeezed to the infinitesimal dimensions.

5. The new album will be out soon, what are your expectations of the new release?
We have moderate expectations. Of course, we would like for this album to create a stir in the music world, but I do not bear any illusions. In the modern world, where there is an enormous amount of various music, it is rather difficult for your creations to reach the ears of people who could possibly be interested in this material. Besides this is not an end in and of itself. We do not have a goal to be liked or suitable for everybody, and under no circumstances we are going to chase any trends or follow the public with questionable tastes. We create music first and foremost for ourselves and for our most dedicated fans.

6. Currently you are singed to Svarga Music, how did you get in contact with this label and how would you describe the support they have given you so far?
I am very happy that fate connected us with this label. This label is outstanding and it specializes only in Ukrainian metal. This label is run by our old and very good friend. These days the label offers our band tremendous amount of help and support, and also actively pushes our “product”.

7. I have noticed that the band sounds different than most bands from your home country, how are you received in Ukraine?
We are well accepted everywhere, including our homeland. The fact that our music is different from other bands from our region is actually an asset for us, since it makes our music both original and recognizable.

8. On a worldwide level how has your music been received by underground metal fans?
It is early to judge this. Still too much remains to be done. In any case, I think that everyone who will listen to the album will be rather surprised by this “product”.
This material can be listened to in one breath, in one sitting, yet at the same time this is not simple music, it will make you think. I assume that many will enjoy our material, especially those who value complex multifaceted music.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
I think that every future album will have some surprises. And every one of them will have its own inimitable uniqueness. In any case future albums will all have a pretty heavy sound, but also various accents in a way of live instruments and electronic arrangements. I think that the direction chosen by us is the one and only correct direction for this band. And we will definitely follow our own principles.

10. I have noticed that the songs where written in 3 different languages what was the decision behind that?
This is because every language has its own inimitable sound and rhythmic quality. So, using one language or the other one can influence the atmosphere of a whole track. When you are creating a topic, fairly early into the process you get an idea what language will make the lyrics sound the best. It is precisely because of this reason our music includes lyrics in multiple languages. This also underlines the multiple styles in our art.

11. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced the music of Thunderkraft?
Every bandmember obviously has his/her own music preferences. Therefore, I will not name any specific bands. However, I can stress several styles which influenced us in one way or the other: this is, of course, classical music, metal, folk and electronic music.

12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
I recommend our new album Totentanz to all who like listening to unusual, non-standard and multifaceted music. The person who is capable of grasping the irrational will not be left untouched …

Noctem Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

Beleth: Right now the band is writing the third album and playing on various shows and metal fests all over the state and European territory. At the moment everything seems that we are going to combine tours and periods of composition throughout 2012.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the newer material and how it differs from previous releases?

Beleth: I think it sounds much more mature and appropriate for the band. It is more brutal and more approximated to the idea that the band has of music. For several years we always wanted to expose this material, but we were limited by our former label. Now is the time to do it.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music?

Beleth: Oblivion is an album based on Mayan mythology. The Spanish conquest and the break between men and natural roots. We can't exploit only one theme in an album. We cover as much as possible and always giving a critical character.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the band's name?

Beleth: Noctem comes from the ancient Latin language. We chose this name because it reminded us of the most primitive instincts of man, including the fear of the dark.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

Beleth: There are so many. Mainly enjoyed playing in festivals. I specially remember shows on our tour with Gorgoroth or the shows of the tour with Samael, Keep of Kalessin and Melechesh. We had really good times. I can describe it as dynamic and aggressive. We keep moving all the time and just after each show we are exhausted.

6. Do you have any plans to tour North America in the future?

Beleth: We received some good offers but I can not talk about it in this moment. I really hope to be there very soon.

7. The last album came out on Rising Records, how did you get in contact with this label and how would you describe the support that they have given you so far?

Beleth: Our manager is primarily concerned with these issues. We are pleased with the work done by Rising Records. Sometimes is difficult to find a record label to work hard and focus wholeheartedly in a band. So far no complaints.

8. On a worldwide level how has your music been recieved by fans of black and death metal?

Beleth: I sincerely believe that Oblivion received a much better acceptance than Divinity. This time we had the opportunity to do whatever we wanted. Rising Records has not intervened in the slightest degree the process and this is noticed. We have drawn the worst shit we carry inside in a long time and we have spit it in the face to the world.

9. Are there any other projects besides this band or is this a full time line-up?

Beleth: No. Mainly the musicians of this band are dedicated only to play here.

10. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases.

Beleth: We will continue in the line that Oblivion marked. We do not want to break this job with a weird strange shit. We are really pleased with this work and we believe we can do much better in this line polishing and perfecting details this latest installment elevating it to a higher level of technical and brutality.

11. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer material and also what are you listening to nowadays/

Beleth: Mainly I'm a listener of extreme metal. Black, Death, Grind ... I think we always have been influenced by bands like Belphegor, Dark funeral, Behemoth, Blood Bath, Decapitated, Deicide, Slayer and many more.

12. How would you describe your views on Occultism?

Beleth: As a set of knowledge and practices that seek to awaken dormant parts in man and master the secrets of nature. If you are a Christian you are an asshole and the occultim will be for you a synonym of Satanism. Fuck you social shit!

13. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

Beleth: Playing sports, beach, my business and my family. I have no time for much more really Noctem is a very big part of my life.

14. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

Beleth: A big hug to all the readers and U.S. Metal Heads. We hope to see you soon in the States fucking and destroying everything in the way we know it haha.

Thank you very much for your time has been a pleasure answering your questions brothers!

Let us know when you publish it!

Cheers.

Noctem/Oblivion/Rising Records/2011 CD Review

Noctem are a band from Spain that plays a very heavy and brutal form of black metal that also combines brutal death and thrash metal influences into the music and this is a review of their 2011 album "Oblivion" which was released by Rising Records.

Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with a lot of brutal sounding blast beats being thrown into the music as well as a brief use of shamanistic style tribal drumming being used, while the bass playing has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars and at times they have a very powerful sound to them, as for the synths they are only used briefly and bring a very dark and atmospheric sound to them as well as an avant garde/experimental edge to the last song.

Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast riffs that combine the most brutal elements of black, thrash and death metal together with some dark sounding melodies and technical parts to create a sound of their own mixed in with a brief use of soft and clean playing, while the lead guitars are very technical and melodic sounding guitar solos and leads.

Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams mixed in with some deep death metal growls as well as the type of growling you would except from more mainstream bands, while the lyrics cover Mythology, Occultism, dark and anti religion themes, as for the production it has a very strong, powerful, heavy and professional sound to it.

In my opinion Noctem are a very great an original sounding brutal black metal band that also combines melody, thrash, death and technical metal together and if you are a fan of this style, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Arrival Of The False Gods" "Invictus" "Sons Of Hun-Vucb" and "Oblivion". RECOMMENDED BUY.

Black Crow King Interview

1. Can you tell us a little about about the project Black Crow King for those that have never heard of you before?
It is a solo project that came into existence mid 2011 as a means for me to explore very personal beliefs, interests and emotions. At the time I was making really harsh hate filled rage fuelled extreme electronic music that was not suitable to explore some of my other interests so Black Crow King came into existence.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?
The bastard offspring of Extreme Doom, Death Industrial, Black Metal and Dark Ambient. Think along the lines of Khanate meets Gnaw Their Tongues with some harsh electronics and black atmospherics thrown in for good measure

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects that you explore with the music?
On 'To Pay The Debt Of Nature' there is a central theme to the album, namely death but each song also explores it's own separate theme. 'I, Crow' is an exploration and homage to crows in the role they play in the natural the supernatural and occult worlds. 'The Shadow Falls' is a philosophic discussion on nihilism, misanthropy and death. In 'Vengeance' I think the title says as much as you need to know, 'Grotesque Existence' explores the grotesque nature of humanity and how the one is neglible to the many and how we as a race have become Grotesque i.e. no longer a part of the natural world and nature. 'Crowbait' is pure misanthropy and malevolence and the final track 'Excarnation Ritual' explores my interest in the funeral practice of excarnation, this is an ancient practice linked with pagan beliefs in which the deceased persons corpse was left out in the open, most commonly on a platform, as an offering to nature in the form of crows and other carrion feeding birds. The crows / vultures acted as carriers for the soul to be taken to the afterlife.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name Black Crow King?
I have a deep seated interest in crows and there supernatural role, they are viewed as the bringers and companions of death in virtually every culture, so to me the king of the crows would be death himself and that is what inspired the name. There is also a character that features in the lyrics of some of my songs that I call Crowlord - this too is a personification of death. Incidentally the album title itself is a euphemism for death.

5. The album came out on badGod music, how do you feel they have helped with spreading and supporting your music so far?
badGod Music has been wonderful, Dave has supported me from the day he first heard Black Crow King and has been tireless in his efforts to promote the band however he is able to, he does it for the love of the music and supports the bands 100%. Any artist would be lucky to be signed by the label.

6. Do you have any other musical projects besides Black Crow King?
Yes but that is a conversation for another day.

7. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
I have already started work on the follow up album, the songs will still be long but for this release will follow a more structured sound and I am using a heavier guitar sound but all the other experimental elements will still remain - BCK will never be 'another run of the mill doom band', if I ever feel that is happening I will scrap the project.

8. What are some bands or musical styles that have inflenced your music?
Khanate, Electric Wizard, Burning Witch, Eagle Twin, Gnaw Their Tongues, Anaal Nathrakh, Prurient, Whitehouse, MZ.412 and N.D.E

9. Does Satanism or Occultism play any role in your music?
Satanism does not play any role but the occult does. My interests lie in the more primal forms of paganism and the primal deities.

10. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Thank you for your great review and for the opportunity to do this interview and I hope that the more adventurous people will go out and buy and enjoy the album in all it's ugly depraved beauty.

Drum programming when it is utilized range from slow to mid paced beats that are not included on every song, while the bass playing has a very strong and powerful sound with slow doom/sludge riffs that dominate throughout the recording, as for the synths when they are utilized they have a very dark ambient and evil sound to them with some harsh noise effects being thrown in at times.

Rhythm guitars range from slow to mid paced that combine black metal, doom metal and sludge together with a great amount of heavy distortion while the lead guitars when they are utilized are very distorted and noisy sounding guitar solos and leads.

Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams mixed in with some deep blackened growls, while the lyrics cover dark and occult themes, as for the production it has a very dark, raw and primitive sound to it.

Wykked Wytch Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
Ipek- We are getting ready for the release in February. Also shooting a video next month and getting ready to tour in the spring.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new album and how it differs fromprevious releases?
ipek- The new album is a much more mature album album than the previous. Same type of extreme metal music but better songs and much more going on. This albumalso welcomes the new addition of guitarist Nate Poulson who composed the music. What we have here is raw modern and technical musically and vocally very brutal,/ inhuman sick, with still epic clean vocals. Mixture of all metal syles and should appeal everyone who likes good heavy and extreme music.

3. Whatare some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer release?
Ipek-Lyrics are always evolving and express my emotions to where I was at the time and my mindset. Personal dramas effect the feelings and vision for the album, At the time of writing I was going through some betrayal and deceits. Basically lies and back stabbing issues from close friends and family.I think everyone can relate to this. Seeing true colors of a persons and despising their existence.

4. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would youdescribe your stage performance?
ipek- We have done many great shows over the years but few really stuck with me such as Kreator Tour in 2002, No Mercy Fests in 2005, & 2009 shows at California Metalfest and Portugal which was part ofo our last headlining tour in Europe. With our tour in 2009 this was our most recent line-up and I had very young yet very skilled talented musicians and they played excellent. These guys will bethe same for the tour supporting ‘ The Ultimate Deception’ so we will have thehigh energy shows. Everyone was very high energy pumped on stage unlike old burned out band members.

5. Do you have any touring plans for the new release?
Ipek-Absolutely,in the next few months everything will be announce. Especially US tour which we have neglected for so long. We were heavily focusing on Europe before because that’s where our previous label Demolition was based. But now since we have the support of our new label Goomba Music, we plan on doing much more touring in the US to support this release.

6. On a worldwide level how has your newer material been received by underground metal fans?
Ipek= Amazing and very well. Which I'm not surprised. ‘The Ultimate Deception’is fucking filler and fans have been waiting so long. I promised that the wait would be worth it. We have only released the track ‘Despised Existence’ so far which is streaming on the label site. Just getting a small dose of this beast of a single makes the fans even more excited to hear the rest of the album!

7. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
ipek- I have not changed any direction. I always had the same vision for WW. SometimesI didn’t have the right creative team behind me at the time. But as time goes on you mature with your music and you get more creative, picky, and make better decisions. Also new members bring in fresh idea and new blood which is the reason some of the past members had to go. Don’t want to settle for less. We will continue to write more technical and epic tunes. The future will just mean making better music. More complex songs, technical, melodies, catchy riff, more solos, brutal & clean singing.

8. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer material andalso what are you listening to nowadays/
Ipek- I myself been classically trained so from Bach to Rock, blues , jazz and mainly all Metal styles have captured my attention. Older and newer bands always turned me on. Mercyful Fate & Testament had a big impact on early years of my career. Dio, Black Sabbath & Death my favorite old stuff. Can’t think of all the current bands but dig Opeth, Faceless, Obscura, August Burns, Behemoth.Winds of Plague. Nate the guitarist listens to more modern bands like Periphery, Born of Osiris, After The Burial, Job For A Cowboy since he is from the new generation of musicians, but still love Pantera like us all.

9. Does Occultism play any role in the music?
ipek- No,I don’t think so. We have some fantasy type lyrics that could be interpret as occult, but no one is practicing any type of religion.

10.Outside of music what are some of your interests?

Ipek- In addition to doing the band I also do a metal radio show weekly “Ipek’s WytchingHour” on www.metalmessiahradio.com and interview my favorite bands and expose new bands that needs promotion. Still love going to concerts and festivals.Love Music period. I am also very much into true crime shows that you will find on History & Discovery, 48 hour type shows with scientific data and solving death and missing person mysteries. Love independent films and also animal lover. Cooking is another passion of mine. I can't speak for the band members they all have some different hobbies and maybe have a few skeletons in their closets which I don't care to know.

11. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
