Noctomb/Self Titled/2023 Full Length Review

Noctomb  are  a  band  from  Raleigh,  North  Carolina  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  and  sludge  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  and  self  titled  2023  album.

A  very  dark,  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  when  the  music  speeds  up.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  elements  of  sludge  metal  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  solos  and  leads  also  bring  in  more  of  a  melodic  and  old  school  style.  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  psychedelic  soundscapes  and  some  of  the  riffing  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  dissonant  touches.

Noctomb  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black  and  sludge  metal  and mixes  them  together  to create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism  and  Misanthropy  themes.

In  my  opinion  Noctomb  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black  and  sludge  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Kali  Yuga"  "Tongues  Of  Madness"  and  "Evensong".  8  out  of  10.

Avdagata Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

-Completely overwhelmed by all the positive feedback, all the people who have heard, all the reviews, all the amazing people who made pre-orders and are still discovering Avdagata!

2.Towards the end of June, you had released your first full length, musically how does it differ from your previous ep?

- There has been an extreme development since the EP.

We wrote and recorded the EP in less than 2 weeks. On the album we have found our "own" sound, the whole album has a great variety without it derailing.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters from the previos ep?

-Topics like Luciferianism, KaosGnosticism.

The song writing process has evolved, completely different focus. Which is clearly heard on The Faceless One.

4.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

- It is made by Danny 'The Destroyer' Eriksson. One word that sums it up well is DEATH!

5.Has the band done any live shows or open to the idea?

- No we havent done any live shows yet. But we will do some live shows, I can't say when but it will happen.

And of course we are open for suggestions.

6.On the new album you had a good amount of guests, can you tell us a little bit more about who they are and also their contributions to the recording?

-Cristopher Amott (Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquility) is a close friend of mine, he plays the first guitar solo on Shimmering Black and all the guitar solos on Noxifer.

Dean Paul Arnold (Primalfrost, Vital Remains, Hate, Belphegor) plays all the guitar solos on The sulphur fire, Cold seed of the dragon and the guitar solo after the first chorus on Shimmering Black.

Patrik Gardberg (Solution.45) plays the outro guitar solo on Shimmering Black.

The magical female vocals on Shimmering Black is Bea Jarlgren.

7.The new album was released on 'At Dawn Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

-This is a new born label from Sweden, created by Henric Liljesand. They will release all things metal, but mostly black and death metal. They have at last 3 more releases this fall, as well as a new version of our album.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and death metal?

- It has been absolutely incredibly good! From all possible countries over the world. The reviews too! Feels good as hell.

9.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

-Jaloma is busy with Dark Funeral and Night Crowned.

Allsvart writes songs for Ulverheim.

I (Sebb Drago) will continue with Kythrone, and some guest vocal appearances.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

-We have already started writing material for the next album. We develop all the time.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?

-A lot of hard rock, metal from the 80s.

12.Does Occultism play any role in your music?

-I, Sebb Drago writes all the lyrics. So I can only speak for myself. I have been interested, studied and practiced Kali, Luciferianism and KaosGnosticism for a very long time.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

-Thank you for your interest in Avdagata and for the interview!

And thanks to everyone who supports Avdagata! / Sebb Drago

NorthZyklon Interview

For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

For those that have never heard of us before, we can say...listen to us (ha-ha). Band from Russia. Our music history started in 2004. But final musical direction was formed… maybe in 2015. We focused on emotions. On strong emotions. Hatred for people for their deeds, hatred for God for his indifference, love for the beautiful admiration for strength, enjoyment of freedom... The interweaving of words and music in close intercourse.

In 2022 you released your first full length, musically how does it differ from your previous ep?

In fact, this is the band's second full-length album. The first one was released in 2017. Our band was called ‘MemoriaL’ at that time. Despite the different name - it's the same musical style, the same people who worked on the material (I don't mean mixing / mastering, I'm talking about song development).

Compared to the EP, the album shines with sound. It's a symbiosis between a modern, over-dense sound and an archaic, iconic black metal raw sound. We didn't aim to record material "in a damp dungeon on an old microphone". No. We wanted to convey the liveliness of the instruments, so that the sound would be different from most modern tracks. I think we succeeded. Also, the compositions are worked out in much more detail on the album. If you listen not superficially - the abundance of string melodies and interesting drum moves will leave positive impressions. EP was a sketch. A preparation for a long term toil. While a full-length album is a big work, where all the tracks are interconnected by a single concept.

What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

Basically, these are philosophical questions of world perception. We are not trying to tell how the listener should feel. We describe what we feel. Unearthing one's own fears, understanding one's own feelings, complemented by malice and anti-religion.

Originally the band was called 'MemoriaL', what was the cause of the name change and also the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'NorthZyklon'?

The 'MemoriaL' was designed when we were very young. I wanted to emphasize the desired monumentality (at that time we did not have it), while adding gloominess.

The members of the group grew up, at some point the band completely broke up. Then a reunion spontaneously turned out, the group returned to its original cast. But with a more adult look at the music. We decided to change the name, nobody liked the old one anyway. We have always been attracted by the north with its frosty secrets. The group was called the Northern Cyclone, but the word "cyclone" itself was written in a German manner. Firstly, because I love the German language (very strong sounding), secondly... so that when anyone googles us, they would not get weather forecast (haha).

I will say in advance: we have nothing to do neither with the symbolism of the recent events in the world nor with Nazism, or anything like that. We've been suspected of this...

Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The cover is an illustration for the album's main track. In 2017, a song called "Witch" laid the foundation for the formation of an album. Despite the fact that the album contains earlier songs written in 2012-2016, it was after the creation of "Witch" when the idea was born: it seems it's time to record an album!

The fastest track on the album. A machine gun of drums, a whirlwind of guitars, an interweaving of melodies - all this is about the "Witch".

Following the lyrics, following the concept of the entire album, the idea for the cover was born.

The album is called "Inter Eos" (lat.), which translates as "among them". This is a part of the text from the second most powerful track "Non god, Non father". All tracks are connected by a single theme, the listener becomes an "observer" of an action that should not have been seen. It is a sacrament forbidden to strangers. Faced with what he saw, the hero himself (the listener) ceases to be himself. Spiritual throwing, doubts in faith begin to overcome him. All this is displayed in the texts and, as a result, in the cover of the "main action": the ascension of a new witch, the arrival of a new one in the world.

What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you like to describe your stage performance?

We practically do not give concerts. This is a difficult topic for our team, in our conditions. We have no interest in such events due to the current realities.

The group's main focus is the studio work. It is in the studio where we manage to reveal the meaning of the songs as we hear them at the stage of the idea's inception.

However, our YouTube channel has recordings of our live performances. If you want to see us on stage - go to the channel. And if you like what you see - wait, maybe someday we will have that very "best performance", and you will be able to see it with your own eyes!

Do you have any touring or show plans for 2023?

No. For 2023, we plan to release another single (maybe even two), which will be the harbinger of the upcoming 3rd album, the material for which is almost ready.

A few years ago you also did a 'Marduk' cover, what was the decision behind doing your own version of one of their songs?

Marduk is the greatest musical group. Marduk, Belphegor, Hate – are perhaps the top three in my playlist. Of course, when you're playing music, you want to keep up with the best. Well, since I listed the "best" ones above - the idea to create a cover for the "fathers" came by itself. This is kind of a challenge: are you able to play the same way as the eminent teams play? I think we’ve made it.

In addition to the cover of Marduk, in live performances we played songs by Immortal, Belphegor and some other bands (I hope they won't swear at us ha-ha).

If the question is connected with a hint of the song’s theme and how it's viewed by society - I repeat: we are not pursuing any "Nazi ideology". Music is always closely related to the perception of the listener. Alas, I cannot influence someone else's perception. We just like to play fast, heavy, complex, melodic music.

On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and death metal?

It seems… The universe has not learned about us yet (ha-ha). But we are working in this direction.

I think everyone understands that your popularity now directly depends on advertising. But every moon has a dark side of the moon, right? If you "force" the audience to listen to your band, it may become annoying. Ideally, the most honest recognition of you as a musician comes when you are being listened to at the recommendations of friends. I mean live discussion, not imposed by advertising, paid, social networking algorithms.

There is a thin line between "I don't pay for ads and no one will ever hear me" and "I paid 100k people to be praised in the comments".

We just write songs that we like, play them, record them in the best quality and hope that the audience will find this music on their own.

Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

The tracks for the 3rd album (and even a couple of things for the 4th) seem to be more complex. I think we are developing. These are not always "faster" songs, more complex in terms of "playing technique". This is a growing difficulty to comprehend. In fact, I understand that this can chase away the listener. Very few people are ready to listen to a track several times in order to understand it. But that doesn't really concern us. The main thing is that music gives us satisfaction, which means that there will be those who are on the same wavelength with us.

I think we can record a dozen more albums))

What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

First of all - Belphegor. This is the band with which I realized that heavy music is as beautiful and multifaceted as classical music. Yes, this realization came after the song Lucifer Incestus, no matter how strange it may seem. From the first chords heard in 2004, I became a fan of this group. Vesania, Hate, DarkFuneral, Marduk, CristAgony, Taake, Satyricon, NocturnalDepression, Tiamat… I'm afraid that if you list all the bands we like and which influenced the formation of our style, it will take a couple of days))

As for musical styles - I do not presume to argue. Now there are too many varieties, and too many smart people who try to fit music into a certain genre. At the same time, the music itself is also evolving. Each group can find parts of a particular style. In short - we focus on black death metal.

Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Dude, yes, you who is reading this. Stop basing your musical tastes on what the ads tell you. If you love music, consider yourself a sophisticated listener - look for music. Feel the music. Listen carefully. Stop listening to selective tracks, start to perceive the work of musicians as a whole, collected, large-scale. Try to move away from modern algorithms, return music to the category of art, and not the background sound that buzzes in your headphones while you are doing business.

All of us, musicians, in each of our work try to reveal to you, the listeners, a part of our worldview. So try to hear it! This might be new and exciting for you!

Ravenoir Interview

Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

Very briefly. Since the music publisher Gothoom Productions failed to provide the necessary promotion for the second album "In the Womb of Sin" and it was also obvious that they would have nothing more to offer RAVENOIR band in the future, I decided to end my cooperation with this label. It didn't take long and mutual sympathies crossed with Black Barn Music. Under the auspices of this label, both of the current albums will be released on gatefold vinyl in early 2023. Both the debut "The Darkest Flame of Eternal Blasphemy" and the second full-length opus "In the Womb of Sin" will be available on individual LPs separately, as well as a limited edition of both albums in a classy, obscure box, limited to 100 copies. At the moment, each of us is individually absorbing the setlist for live shows. And since I personally can't stand to be idle as a composer for long, I'm already slowly working on new material for the next RAVENOIR album. However, I would like to realize this during 2024. The release of both albums in vinyl form will in a way perfectly fill the time parallel for the upcoming third album. Now the band wants to focus mainly on concert activity.

In July you had released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

The connection between the two albums is the darkness and rawness that is woven through the various soundscapes, enhancing the dark mood of the entire album. The fusion of darkness, rawness, predation with melodic elements will always be a hallmark of RAVENOIR's work.

What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored on both of the albums and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

Of course, the lyrics are just as important to me as the music and always accompany the atmosphere of the song. The content of the lyrics focuses on the themes of life, death, dark mysticism, Satanism and a good dose of Blasphemy. I have been primarily a music composer and producer for years. I have always had a dark feeling deeply rooted in me and I always try to use it when writing music. I have the advantage and ability to hear the final form of songs before they are finished. When I close my eyes the arrangements of all the instruments flow in my head.  I write lyrics very sporadically. Most of the time I share the writing of lyrics with my colleague, bassist Igor Hubik.

The band was formed during the COVID19 pandemic, did that give you a lot of time to work on the musical style more since there was nothing really on back in that year?

The idea to start a new band had been growing in me for a long time, but the truth is that the coronavirus situation at the beginning of 2020 was very helpful for the creation of RAVENOIR. All the concerts we had planned with the band Root, where we worked together with bassist Igor, were cancelled or postponed. Suddenly I had a lot of free time. So I devoted it to composing material for Raven's debut. So the formation of the band, the writing of the material and the recording of the first album took place during the first wave of the Covid epidemic. Everything came about very slowly and naturally.

Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

I am the author of the motif for the cover. Let's say that it is purely my personal depiction of the image of that paradise, where the main character of the cover is a kind of ethereal being, representing the goddess of pleasure, lust, sex, desire, excitement and lechery. As is known according to Christian theology, these very natural sexual urges bring man into this world through original-inherited "sin". Personally, instead of renouncing anything, I am very happy to indulge in all the pleasures that life has to offer, so "original sin" is a completely absurd thesis to me. Several artworks by an Indonesian artist, whose artistic name is Jenglot Hitam, have come to my attention. I outlined my visions to him in a few sentences and he aptly portrayed them. The author of the back cover was the very well-known Mexican artist Néstor Avalos. The collaboration with both artists went smoothly, through an exchange of a few emails. However, I would very much like to work with Néstor Avalos in the future. I absolutely admire his artwork.

So far the band has not been able to do any live shows, what can we expect musically when you are finally able to hit the live stage?

As I mentioned above, RAVENOIR now has to prepare a programme for live performances in the next few months, which will most likely take place in 2023. I am very much looking forward to it. I miss standing on stage and performing a lot right now. We will offer RAVENOIR fans a good portion of dark death metal through a cross section of both albums.

Most of the band members are veterans that have also played in other bands, do you feel extreme metal has made plenty of changes over the last couple of decades?

Personally, I hardly follow the music scene at all with a few exceptions, so it's hard to answer this question.

On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and death metal?

Both the first and the second RAVENOIR albums have reached a large number of metal followers all over the world and all the criticism on this work has been and so far is more than favorable and I am duly proud of both albums. The interest in RAVENOIR is gradually growing and this is my motivation as well as my greatest satisfaction.

What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?

My favourite bands for many years are Iron Maiden, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Bathory and Slayer. From other genres I really like Depeche Mode, The Cure, Nine Inch Nails or David Bowie.

Does Satanism or Occultism play any role in your music?

In the lyrical themes, definitely yes. Satanic philosophy is very close to me personally.

Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thank you for your kindness and also your time. Have a great time everyone and keep an eye out for more Ravenoir´s exploits.
