Drama Noir/Nightfall Upon The Asylum/Floga Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Drama  Noir  are  a  band  from  Greece  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  symphonic  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Nightfall  Upon  The  Asylum"  which  was  released  by  Floga  Records.

  Symphonic  sounding  keyboard  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.  Choirs  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  album  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  as  well  ad  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  melody.

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  vocals  bring  in  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls.  A  lot  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  mid  90's  era  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  One  song  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  operatic  female  vocals  as  well  as  one  track  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars,  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  writings  of  H.P  Lovecraft,  Folklore,  Religion  and  Apocryphism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Dram  Noir  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  symphonic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "284  Green  Street  Avenue"  "Shepherd  Of  The  Lost"  and  "Nightfall  Upon  The  Asylum".  8 out  of  10.

Deimhal/The Grand Gathering/2023 EP Review

 

  Deimhal  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  plays  a  very  symphonic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2023  ep  "The  Grand  Gathering".

  A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal s creams  along  with  the  synths  also  giving  the  music  more  of  a  symphonic  feeling  when  they  are  utilized.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  era.  Clean  playing  can  also b e  heard  briefly  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  all  of  the  songs  also  stick  to  a  more  mid  tempo  direction,  clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  on  the  closing  track  a  small  amount  of  fast  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can b e  heard.

  Deimhal  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  symphonic  and  mid  tempo  sounding  in  the  mid  90's  tradition.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  themes.  

  In  my  opinion  Deimhal  are  a  very  great  sounding  symphonic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Alliance  Of  Winter"  and  "Vengeance  Of  the  Night  Crows".  8  out  of  10.

  Efflore  are  a  band  from  Taiwan  that  plays  a  very  melodic  and  symphonic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  ep  "Haunted  Island"  which  was  released  by  Mourning  Light  Records.

  A  very  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  symphonic  elements  and  synths  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  black  metal  screams  along  with  a  few  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  blast  beats.

  Tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  in  some  of  the  faster  riffing  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Spoken  words  can  also be  heard  on  a  couple  of  tracks  along  with  all  of t he  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  added  into  the  music  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Elflore  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  melodic  and  symphonic  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  folk  and  urban  horror  legends  from  Chinese  Taoism  and  Indian  Buddhism.  

  In  my  opinion  Ehflore  are  a  very  great  sounding  melodic  and  symphonic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Wraith  in  The  Old  Well"  and  "Spirits  Of  the  Green  lake".  8  out  of  10.

Vargrav/Encircle The Spectral Dimension/Werewolf Records/2023 EP Review

 

  Finland's  Vargrav  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  symphonic  style  of  black  metal  from  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  ep  "Encircle  the  Spectral  Dimension"  which  was  released  by  Werewolf  Records.

  A  very  fast  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  while  symphonic  elements  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim y et  high  pitched  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  music  also  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  mid  90's  era.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with a  couple  of  tracks  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  they  also  bring  in  a  cover  of  Emperor's  "Ancient  Queen"  before  closing  the  ep  with  a  live  track.

  On  this  recording  Vargrav  remains  true  to  the  symphonic  style  of  black  metal  that  they  have  established  on  previous  releases.  the  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  Hatred,  Misanthropy,  Supremacy  and  Individuality  themes.     

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Vargrav  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  symphonic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "The  Glory  of  Eternal  night".  8 out  of  10.

Wooden Shadow/Eternal Land Of Wrath And Mourn/Inverse Records/2023 Full length Review

 

  Wooden  Shadow  are  a  solo  project  form  Finland  that  plays  a  melodic  and  symphonic  mixture  of  black,  death  and  folk  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  album  "Eternal  Land  Of  Wrath  And  Mourn"  which  was  released  by  Inverse  Records.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  and  also  brings  in  elements  of  folk  music  along  with  some  symphonic  sounding  keyboards  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast b eats  can  be  heard  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  melody.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  in  some  of  the  faster  riffing.

  Moonskin  are  a  band  from  British  Columbia,  Canada  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  symphonic  and  melodic  mixture  of  black,  dark  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  theri  self  released  2023  ep  "Lunar  Ascendence".

  A  very  heavy  and  symphonic  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  female  vocals  a  few  seconds  later.  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  emtal  growls  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  melody as  well  the  mid  tempo  sections  also  adding  in  touches  of  groove  metal.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  keyboards  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording.  Clear  male  vocals  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  dark  metal  elements  and  the  ep  closes  with  a  cover  of  Black  Sabbath's  "Paranoid".

  On  this  recordingMoonskin  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  the  melodic  and  symphonic  forms  of  black, d ark  and  death  metal  and  mixes  them  with  a  touch  of  groove  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  supernatural,  horror,  lycanthropy,  high  fantasy,  exploration,  loss,  healing,  ascension,  power,  life  and  death  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Moonskin  and  if  you  are  a  fan    symphonic,  melodic  black,  dark  and  death  metal  and  ,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Subjagation  And  Oppression"  and  "Altering  the  Entity".  8 out  of  10.

  Germany's  solo  project  3xperimental  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric  and  symphonic  style  of  black  metal  with  electronic  music  elements  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2023  album  "Cosmic  tales".

  Electronic  music  sounds  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  songs  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  melody  and  blast b eats  and  also  added  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs.

  Tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  in  a  lot  of t he  fast  riffs  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  sci-fi  style  clear  vocals  into  the  music  and  the  music  also  has  its  symphonic  moments.

  Synths  and  orchestra  sounds  are  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  some  operatic  choirs  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  album,  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  programmed  beats  also  being  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording.  All  of  the  music  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them and  the  closing  song  is  also  an  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  survival  and  hope  themes.
