Tongue Eating Louse Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Nick: Tongue Eating Louse is the culmination of years of trying but always failing and I think you can really hear that pain and disappointment in the recordings. We’re a Sludgemetal four piece, from Ontario, Canada in the styles of Helpless, Buried Inside

And Lord Mantis. I’m the drummer, I came onto the project in 2015, a year before we recorded the ST/EP.

2.You have your first full length coming out in August, what are some of the things you have done differently on this recording that you where bot able to do with your previous releases?

Nick: I think the length of the songs on the album are an obvious distinction. We’ve been sitting on these songs for a while so to finally have them coming out is actually kind of freeing. I feel like Voidwalker was the album we we’re always trying to make but just didn’t have the power to materialize.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music?

Nick: I have spoken with John about this many times and from what I can tell Voidwalker is about being dead? It’s a concept album about leaving your body after death and traveling to other side, or walking the void- if you will. I told him it sounded kinda boring but he believed in it, oh well!

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Tongue Eating Louse’?

Nick: I wasn’t in the band when they named it but I can give you my idea of what probably happened. Rob suggested the name Tongue Eating Louse and no one heard him, then, moments later either Beau or John said “I know, let’s name it Tongue Eating Louse!” And the rest is misery.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Nick: It was a design we had stumbled upon on Instagram by Curseofface, he’s done stuff for Power Trip and Mammoth Grinder. It goes with the theme of the album so well you’d almost SWEAR it was commissioned but I can promise you that it wasn’t because before that I was pushing HARD for the dudes to use an old Tom of Finland picture as the cover to literally no avail.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Nick: awkward and loud like a teens first time. Our best show was probably in Oshawa with Pink Cocoon, a sick blusey stoner doom band from Montreal. The crowd was awesome and the tunes were loud. 10/10 Would relive again with some minor changes to the bill.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

Nick: none. I never want to be in a car with Beau for longer than three hours. I fear his lust for Alex Jones level conspiracy theories has driven him to a point of involuntary celibacy and I don’t know who to talk to about it. Aside from that Canada is the real void, getting around out here takes too long.

8.A year ago you where a part of a split with 'Hunter, Gatherer', what are your thoughts on the other band that had participated on the recording?

Nick: I love the dudes from HG. On some Lost Highway shit I've been in Garrets apartment like three times without him even knowing. I wish they would release more music, their blend of post-black metal is sensible, stylish and innovative like a car of Asian design. Garret and Kelsi both are in a sick cockrock band called Thunderkok now. Their IG is thunderkokrocks.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black, sludge and doom metal?

Nick: The reception has been great, I’ll never forget that time we got bumped by the (now defunct) meme page Dab Moms. I’m excited to be working with Sludgelord records on the full length release, their releases so far have been so strong so to be included among them is the real shit for me. Finland is a big demographic for us, so I just want to shoutout all our Finnish readers and listeners, you guys ARE the band!

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Nick: indigenous is a good gauge for the future. It's actually a cut off the next album. We want to do shorter songs for the next album, think 7-8 minutes instead of 11 -17 with more blasting, we talked to advertising about it and they say it’s just good optics.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Nick: When I was 16 there was like 3 bands, now Im 24 and there are at least 50 that I know of. Death, Pig Destroyer, Korn, The Locust, The Black Dahlia Murder were some of the first metal bands I discovered. I didn’t really discover sludge metal until around the time I was asked to play in Tongue Eating Louse, by that time I was digging on bands like Trenches, Black Sheep Wall, Disembowlement, Eyehategod, and Melvins and I had already been to a few TEL shows before that so when Beau asked me to join I was pretty stoked.

N O W A D A Y S I’m listening to In/Humanity, Death Grips, M. Ward, Mellow Harsher, Closet Witch, Dehumanized, Night Slug, Conan, Iron Lung (always),  and Cemetery Lust. Tomb Mold is pretty sick too, lot’s of cool death metal going around right now, like you ever hear of that band Spectral Voice? Just nutty.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

Nick: Comic books, obviously I smoke weed everyday- just to stay fresh. Those two bitches from ABBA are hard, I love how powerful they are. uhhh, beyblades are still hot here, so that’s nice. Serial killer docs are hard, if I had to make a band out of my favourite killers Id have to say Dc Snipers on the drums, for their precision, The Night Stalker on Guitar, zodiac killer on bass (could literally be anyone with a balaclava on) and of course the greatest killers of all Hilary and Big Bubba Bill Clinton on dual vocal duty, they got it in ‘em.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?.

Nick: Yeah, I just wanted to give a shoutout to Zac Murray of Gland. Hey! Where’s the ketchup?! Also S/O to Nina Simone for dedicating her life to making the music she had to make not the music she wanted to make. Voting is important, please vote and be involved.

Primitive Man/Unearthly Trance/Relapse Records/2018 Split Album Review

This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Colorado's  Primitive  Man  and  new  York's  Unearthly  Trance  which  will  be  released  in  August  by  Relapse  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Primitive  Man  who  return  with  their  blackened  mixture  of  noise,  sludge  and  doom  metal.

Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  harsh  noise  intro  while  spoken  word  samples  can  also  be  heard  briefly  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  along  with  a  great  amount  of  distorted  drones  as  well  as  both  of  their  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and   the  slow  riffs  bring  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  and  doom  metal.

When  vocals  are  utilized  they  are  a  mixture  of  death  metal growls  and  black  metal  screams  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  both  of  the  tracks  sticking  to  a  very  slow  direction  as  well  as  the  noise  elements  returning  on  the  second  track,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  hatred  and  misanthropy  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Primitive  Man  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  noise,  black,  sludge  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Naked".

Next  up  is  Unearthly  Trance  who  return  with  their  blackened  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal.

Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  slow  and  heavy  sound  which  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  sludge  and  doom  metal  while  a  couple  of  their  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  screams  adding  in  elements  of  black  metal,  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in a   very  melodic  style  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  elements  of  noise  can  be  heard  on  the  closing  track,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  seasons,  occultism,  hallucination  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Unearthly  Trance  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  sludge  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Reverse  the  Day".

In  conclusion  i  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  sludge  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  split.  8  out  of  10.

Solium Fatalis Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?

We have been rehearsing for shows and getting tour plans together for a run late this year and of course March and all the associative things.

2.You have a new album coming out in October, what are some of the things you have done differently musically on this recording that you where not able to do with your previous releases? We got bigger sound took longer to write songs and we also got to have female vocals which I always wanted to do on a track as well as Ryan and I wrote more together than previous records.  Production slays too.

3.The lyrics on the new recording are a concept album, can you tell us a little bit more about the story you explore with this new release?  The concept is dual purpose artificial intelligence and creating synthetic life forms that are of course enslaved by humanity but of course break those shackles and rebel.  Not a terribly original concept but one I have wanted to explore in my own words for a long time musically with this band.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Solium Fatalis'?  It’s late for Fated or Deadly Throne which later I was informed by more educated people than myself was improper use of Latin but I told them they’ll get over it.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?  Pierre-Alain D. Of 3mmi had been our art guy for the last 3 albums and had created this piece specifically centered around the music and concepts and is a visual sort of representation of its content.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?  Our stage performance is heavy and powerful and is something to see.  We sound like our records and it certainly isn’t boring for us when we have that high energy fan base out there ripping with us.  I think our favorites have been Saint Vitus in Brooklyn, Piranha Bar in Montreal, and my personal fave was Brattleboro Vermont at the Stone Church, crowd was insane and he sound was massive.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?  Absolutely but those are top secret for now....for some fuckin reason.

8.On the new album you had some quests, can you tell us who they are and also their contributions onto the recording?  Matt McGachy of Cryptopsy and Haydee Irizarry of Aversed and Carnivora contributed vocals to “A Gathering of Storms” which for me as a writer is one of my finest accomplishments conceptually so I’m proud of that song, Matt also belted our a huge scream on “Factor Red.”  Phil Tougas of Chtheilist and First Fragment lent a solo to “Fiery the Angels Fell” so it was killer to have them on board.

9.The last 2 albums where released on 'Wicked Music Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?  The last one was Wicked Music and the one before(undying season) was Galy Records.  Wicked was an upstart label at the time and is now defunct.  Galy was a sort of experiment that failed as well.  So now we are putting this next record out on our own label “Disfigured Records” and looking to sign some other bands and do the same rather than pander to some stupid ass record label popularity contest.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and death metal?  It’s been 99% bad ass as fuck.  They have eaten this up especially at our shows and we love them it.  Our fans shred.  We have had a few “reviews” that weren’t particularly favorable but opinion is the lowest form of knowledge and doesn’t require fact, information or even truth.  You’re better off thinking for yourself.

11.On the new album you had also done an 'Epidemic' cover, what was the decision behind doing your own version of one of their songs?  That’s a very personal thing for me, I grew up in the middle of nowhere in Iowa and Epidemic’s “Decameron” was such a huge influence on me and I never felt they got their due.... plus I love “Factor Red” and knew this band could do our own version and make it Brutal.   More than anything I hope the members of Epidemic and their fans like it,  cuz we loved playing it.

12.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?  Ryan plays Unflesh and they just put out a killer album called “Savior” Jeff our drummer does Aversed and they are currently writing and recording their first full length album, and Jeff Demarco has been working with his band Excrecor for the last 27 years writing, re-writing, and writing again their 2nd full length album so expect that one to come out around the year 10,191 so the folks of Arrakis also known as Dune, Fremen, Harkonnen, and Atreides alike can come together and enjoy that.

13.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?  I think we are always pretty diverse and we are probably going to be more experimental and use a theramin and maybe some kazoos....have some babies screaming so it sounds like you’re in hell itself.  But really just play the best heavy shit we can.

14.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
So many, myself I love Paradise Lost, Lago is a good one I crank now,  new Necrophobic is really fuckin good.  Our friends in Cryptopsy always influence us with their intensity and how bad ass they are live.  Whore of Bethlehem put out a killer album too.  So many great bands worth hearing.

15.What are some of your non musical interests?  Demarco loves flying and traveling unless he has to drive a large van, then be crumbles and has a nervous breakdown.  Saltzman is the same he loves to travel  and getting a face full of Teargas at anti-Trump rallies.  Ryan and I are the most boring we like cranking records, drinking beer, and making prank phone calls and pulling stunts on our friends.....like signing them up for Scientology.

16.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?  I just wanted to say CUNT because I got all the other good cuss words in this interview previously.  Also thanks to the fine folks of high quality taste for buying our music and merch.  Also thanks for giving us the rub with this interview that’s bad ass.

Gwydion Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?

First of all thanks for the interview, we are glad to be back! Well we are eager with the launch of the new album, because we expect that it will be very important in the bands career.
We are preparing everything, from stage banner, lyric video, merchandise to the official release party…
There will be lot of surprises and good stuff happening theses days!

2.You have a new album coming out in July, how would you describe the musical sound hat is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

This disc features a more mature sound than the old albums. It is a cliché to say that the last album is better than the predecessor but in this case we identify more with the raw and direct sound of Thirteen! We believe it's an album that captivates most metal fans, from heavy, death, folk to viking. Resuming, "Horn Triskelion" - more folk, "Veteran" - more dark, "Thirteen" the best of the 2 worlds!

3.This is your first album in 5 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

It is always good to be back and a huge pleasure to be able to present our work to our fans. Gwydion is back with a new lineup, which brought new insights and influences to Thirteen's end result.
We always hope for the support of our fans in the concerts, because that's what makes us move and continue!

4.The lyrics on the new album cover Viking history and myths, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic?

Gwydion always had an interest in Viking history and myths! But…that’s not only it! Our band is like story tellers, we like to play and sing for relevant facts of history! Norse, Celtic, Portuguese… you name it, we really like to cover this topics.
Since the bands beginning we always had a great interest for medieval and historical themes. It’s a great joy to hear our fans singing our stories, it really makes us fulfilled.

.The bands name comes from Druidism, how would you compare Celtic Paganism to Nordic Paganism?

Asatru by its very nature is Norse- The Asir are Norse gods- The Celtic deities are much more like the pre Asir Norse Gods - the Vanir.
They are both Indo-European religions and it is fair to say the the Celtic forms are probably the older - but that is oversimplifying it! The Norse beliefs evolved out of ones very much like the Celtic traditions. It then took on influences from more eastern European beliefs via the Teutonic peoples. It is a bit the way Titans represent the older faith - pre-Olympian in Greece.
They have slightly differing focus. Also the Norse beliefs lasted until much more recently and are much better recorded so we know more about them. You would really need to do a lot of reading for the specifics. Celt has become a bit of a dirty word with anthropologists and Historians due to it's over use in recent years...

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
We had a lot of really cool shows all over Europe and each band member has it’s own favorite one for a reason or another, but Horner Fest for example was one to remember for all the fun of playing alongside a huge Viking Age encampment. Another one was Vagos Open Air right here in Portugal with the Horn Triskelion album where we had a massive support from the audience and some ridiculously big mosh pit. We can’t forget the show we shared the stage with Immortal on Ragnarok Aaskereia tour or with Enslaved in GDL also here in Portugal, and probably the best off all, the release of our Veteran album that was a celebration of Metal, friendship and were we were able to put up show that people will remember for a long time. Basically all shows are great because we really, truly have fun doing it as you can see from almost all photos of the band at live performances, we’re always laughing and having fun with each other as well as with the people in the crowd and we think that’s on of the secrets that make people come again and again for one of our shows, we have fun, they have fun and listen to some quality Metal at the process.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

No tours for the moment but we have some shows here in Portugal and Spain. We’re still booking the year and doing it slowly and selecting carefully our next steps, we believe that “Thirten” is a great album and so we’re taking things a little bit slower so we can do justice to this work.

8.The new album is coming out on 'Ultraje', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Ultraje is Portuguese magazine that had the courage to invest as a label/distributor. Fortunately, people like Joel, Diogo and Cátia, are here to make things happen and make our life a little easier. This is not “bootsucking”, just the plain reality, we don’t have time for everything, work, band etc…
Face it this is the reality.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of viking, folk and black metal?

Well, it's been really interesting to see people's reaction to the band's work, generally we get a very positive feedback and reviews and at the same time a bit of a surprise reaction to the fact that we are a Portuguese band with so much folk influences. It's fun and satisfying to see us being compared to big and well known bands suchlike Ensiferum and Finntroll that are a kind of benchmark for other bands, but we think that Gwydion it's in a class of it's own, with a very unique mix of Viking, Folk, Black, Death and Symphonic elements combined with a very personal experience of each band member, our overall feeling is that other than the more extreme fans of each genre, we can deliver something different that will surprise and satisfy most Metal fans.

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Some band members have different musical projects. Pedro Correia and Pedro Dias have two bands in common like Invoke (black metal) and Tument (death metal). Pedro Correia plays drums for both bands while Pedro Dias plays guitar and sings in Invoke and is the vocalist in Tument. Pedro Correia has also integrated a recent tribute project to Amon Amarth called Gods of War.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

The band will most likely stick to its formula of folk/Viking metal and continue to produce heavy songs mixed with cheerful melodies and melodic chorus.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I’s hard to answer to this one, we listen to a lot of bands and each band member has his own influences, but we drink from all styles of Metal and somehow manage to combine things in a way that, at least for us, sounds great and we user bits and pieces from all this genres of Metal to bring to live the feeling we think each song

13.What are some of your non musical interests?

We have a lot of things going on in terms of personal interests, we have gammers, bikers, historical reenactors, a fitness addicted, a blacksmith, computer geeks) and a whole lot of random stuff that brings us together out of the studio where we strengthen our bonds and friendship.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

First we would like to thank you for this interview that enables us to reach even more Metal fans out there, and second we want to take this opportunity to thank to everyone that helped and supported us both financially and morally for the release of Thirteen, it's been a long way but with the help of everyone we finally did it. We hope that this will be an album that will bring us even more fans and that it will make our older fans happy, so, grab a mug of mead and join us with Thirteen!

Plaguewielder/Surrender To The Void/Fragile Branch Records/2018 CD Review

Plaguewielder  are  a  band  from  Ohio  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  blackened  mixture  of  doom  and  sludge  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Surrender  To  The  Void"  which  will  be  released  in  August  by  Fragile  Branch  Records.

A  very  heavy  and  mid  tempo  sound  along  with  some  blackened  metal  vocals  start  off  the  album  while  the  bass  guitars  are  also  used  as  a  lead  instrument  at  times  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  sludge  and  doom  metal  as  well  as  the  riffs  also bringing  in  a decent  amount  of  melody.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  while  the  instrumental  tracks  also  bring  in  elements  of  experimental  and  noise  and  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  the  music  focusing  more  on  a  slow  or  mid  paced  direction  and  synths  are  added  onto  the  closing  track.

Plaguewielder  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  their  blackened  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Plaguewielder  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  sludge  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Drippinf  Pools  of  Self  Hatred"  and  "In  Depths  of  Cold  Hell".  8  out  of  10.

Tongue Eating Louse/Voidwalker/Sludgelord Records/2018 Full length Review

Tongue  Eating  Louse  are  a  band  from  Ontario,  Canada  that  plays  a  blackened  form  of  sludge  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Voidwalker"  which  will  be  released  in  August  by  Sludgelord  Records.

Heavy  riffing  starts  off  the  album  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  are  very  heavily  rooted  in  sludge  metal  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  the  high  pitched  screams  being  elements  of  black  metal  and  growls  are  also  utilized  at  times.

Melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  blast  beats  are  also  utilized  when  the  music  speeds  up  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  clean  playing  and  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  recording  as  well  as  the  guitar  leads  being  done  in  a  very  distorted yet  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

Tongue  Eating  Louse  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black  metal  and  sludge  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Shamanism  and  Alchemy  themes.

In  my  opinion  Tongue  Eating  Louse  are  a  very  great  sounding  blackened  sludge  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Alchemy".  8  out  of  10.

Ephyra Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

Hi guys, now our goal is to promote the new album organizing a lot of gigs, so we are working to the live activities for the next Autumn. (And we are taking breath after the long and hard work we have done to produce “The Day Of Return”).

2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the band?

Well… our music is basically a melodic death metal but we use to add folk and epic influences. In this new album the folk side is far eastern oriented with sounds from the tradition of Japan and Mongolia so you will find fascinating atmospheres.
This time we have faster guitars than the older tracks and we introduced some solos too (we are not lovers of exaggerated solos). The production is definitely better. And, as said, we have different traditional instruments compared to the other two albums where you can find harps, transverse flutes, brasses, etc…

3.On the new album you also added in throat singing, Mongolian and Japanese instruments, do you feel you are adding some new things to the folk metal genre, with the new recording?

We know some bands already used those kind of sounds, but we think this is a new entry for the Italian metal scene. Of course, this is unusual and it’s one of the reasons why we chose this way and we’ll continue to explore the music and traditions out there in all the world.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new album?

The texts were written on the basis of real sensations experienced in different moments of life (such as difficulties, challenges, misunderstandings, meetings).
From personal experience, loving the natural side of life and therefore the many links with the outside world, we want the album to describe the interactions of a man and his encounters with people and places that have inspired and influenced his character, destiny and journey.

5.Originally the band started out playing covers, what was the decision behind moving into your own material?

To play covers is funny and it’s a good starting point for your activity, but with the passage of time it became boring so Matteo (who founded the band and at that time he was the only one of the actual line-up) felt the need to write his own music and has changed the direction of the band.

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Ephyra'?

The name Ephyra was immediately adopted at the beginning and it comes from a fantasy videogame (Severance – Blade of darkness). It was chosen to represent a hypothetical reign where the stories of our first album’s songs took place. From the second album our lyrics are no longer focused on that concept.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Our best shows probably were Malpaga Folk and Metal Fest 2017 with Tyr, Rock Inn Somma 2016 with Gli Atroci and Fosch Fest 2015 with Carcass, Satyricon, Finntroll, Manegarm, Heidevolk, Arkona, Dalriada, etc…
About the stage performance we work hard on each aspect trying to be as professional as possible. Reports tell us we are doing it quite well .

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

Nowadays we have some shows confirmed in summer and autumn. Of course, we want to promote “The Day Of Return” and we are working to other gigs in Italy, but we are planning to play in Europe too. If someone who’s reading these words wants us for a show he can write to booking@ephyra.it.

9.The album was released on 'Volcano Records & Promotion', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Volcano is a new and young label in which we have found a concrete partner to work with. Since now we are very happy with what has been done with them both in organizational and human terms. We can say that day by day we are receiving important news and opportunities. We like to be and play an important role in the Volcano family.

10.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your new album by fans of folk and melodic death metal?

It's a bit early to evaluate. Reviews are good, but we don’t have yet a report about sold copies (physical or digital).

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We really don’t know . It would be cool to conquer the northern Europe, South America and Japan but the only thing we can do is to keep on working as our best and see what will happen.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Each of us is different and have different preferences and influences. About the music, you can find melodic death metal like old In Flames or Amon Amarth or Ensiferum or Eluveitie, melodies remembering Amorphis, Vocals like Within Temptation, folk atmospheres that let you think to Loreena McKennitt. It’s hard to find a correct definition and a real influence, we usually write our songs naturally without thinking about other bands/musicians.
In this period, we are listening to (2 options for you):
John: Kasabian, Art Blakey
Patrick: Behemoth, The Meters
Nadia: Arkona, Dream Theater
Francesco: Iced Earth, Wolfheart
Mat: Ennio Morricone, Enigma
Diba: Five Finger Death Punch, Hardcore Superstar

13.What are some of your non musical interests?

John: Bike, radio
Patrick: Netflix, beer
Nadia: Cinema, trekking
Francesco: Spartan race, 5-a-side football
Mat: Diving, reptiles
Diba: Toy library, lute manufacturing

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thank you very much for your time and space. We invite your readers to take a listen to our new album “The Day Of Return”, buy it if they like, and give us their feedback.
It is available digitally on all the platforms and physically on www.ephyra.it.
Have a good life and stay Ephyra \m/

KormaK Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
1 - The band was born in Bari in 2015 from the idea of Zaira and found its stability only in Jenuary 2017 with the final line up. Our music is labelled as Folk Metal but we introduced a lot of contaminations like Death, Melodic and Celtic elements. KormaK do not play just music but try to completely immerse the listener in what they tell.

2.You have your first album coming out this summer, what are some of the things you feel you have accomplished musically on the album?
2 - The release of this album is a very important milestone for us. Zaira created a work of art that could be considered mad from certain points of view; we musicians performed and reproduced as faithfully as possible what she wanted and the result is an album that has a logical sense and that we think listeners might like!

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with the music?
3 - The album examines and amplifies the concept of madness brought by the loss of someone (or something), for this reason the texts recall personal events transcribed in a cryptic way. There are Celtic melodies that evoke moments of deep introspection while the most violent parts tell about battles against real or unreal enemies, that often turn out to be ourselves. The key to read Faerenus is the absolute madness.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'KormaK'?
4 - KormaK is a character of the fantasy literature (Kormak's Saga) whose purpose in life is to payback of some wrongs, and reborn as a man and a hero. As we are all lovers of fantasy, we have captured the essence of this character making him our starting point for everything that the group is and will be.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
5 – We played as band from March 2018, that is to say not enough time to perform. Nevertheless we remember with pleasure our first live, made in our land (Puglia), in which we had an unexpected positive response. In the same way, even a recent live left us ecstatic when, during the performance of one of our songs, the public began to sing with us. On stage we try to recreate the same atmosphere of the album, passing from classical and extremely relaxing melodies to very violent parts in pure Death Metal key.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans once the album is released?
6 - Of course. On June 30th, the day after the release of the album, we will be part of a big concert in our region, that it will be our "release party", afterwards we will move through Italy in the month of July. From September to November we will be busy with the "Faerenus European Tour" in which we will have some dates in other nations like Czech Republic, Slovenia and Greece, where we will play with other important names.

7.The album is coming out on 'Rockshot Music', how did you get in contact with the label?
7 - We simply sent our material to various Italian labels including the "Rockshots Record" and after having received several positive answers we chose it for its artistic background. We can say that it was the right choice!

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of folk metal?
8 - Until now, we received very positive feedbacks for the "Goddess Song", the only single we released. Several fans from Germany, Greece, Poland, Spain and even India follow our social channels and personally we can’t wait to see the next reactions after the release of "Faerenus", and maybe to organize the show abroad

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
9 - We have a lot of energies, we already have some ideas for the next album and we can not wait to get back to work. Stylistically speaking we will try to remain faithful to our imprint but we do not exclude possible outlets towards more evolved sounds.

10.Where are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
10 - The KormaKs try to be as original as possible but it is undeniable that the Scandinavian metal influenced us. Bands like Death, Children of Bodom, Heidevolk, Amon Amarth and Folkearth are part of our musical culture, but we all listen a little bit of everything, not only metal music.

11.Does Paganism play any role in your music?
11 – Although Celtic and Scandinavian traditions fascinate us a lot, we have not included in "Faerenus" elements referred to paganism. For the future we do not know what could happen.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

12 - We are lovers of camping in open nature, some of our songs were born right in the woods. In the same way we love meat and wine, especially the local ones. Finally, fantasy and role-playing games are among our favorite pastimes.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
13 - We thank you for this small space that you gave us and we hope that "Faerenus" could be welcomed by critics and fans, which would give us the right push to continue our journey.

Aeolian Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

We are a new Metal band from Mallorca (Spain) with a lot of Extreme Metal Bands influences in the more melodic direction. Our lyrics call for the need to protect the environment.

2.You have an album coming out in September, what are some of the things you feel you have accomplished musically on the recording?

We are so proud with the final result of the recording. We wanted to express our rage and fury concerning the environmental situation in the world, and thanks to the great work of Miquel A. Riutort as a producer, we feel satisfied. He gave the music the punch we needed.

3.Your lyrics deal with a lot of environmental issues, can you tell us a little bit more about your concern for the environment?

I was born in Majorca, and over the years I have seen how people make everything dirty wherever they go. That situation has led us to a point of no return, and unfortunately all that rubbish goes into the sea.

Sadly, it’s like this here, and everywhere else. You can even hear it on TV now. They say that in 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans!

And I won’t even talk about climate change, global warming, temperature rises, the shrinking of ice sheets, etc.

And the worst? One of the most powerful politicians says that the global warming does not exist, so obviously we do nothing about it.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Aeolian'?

The origin of the word is Aeolus, the Greek God of Wind. And wind is one of the forces of nature that man cannot control. In addition, it describes very well some passages of our music, for example the furious blast beats parts.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and what are the touring or show plans once the new album is released?

The band is so new that we haven’t played live so far. We are arranging a presentation concert in September here in Majorca, and we are also going to play at an Extreme Metal Festival in November.

Before Aeolian, all of us have played many shows and concerts with other bands, so we have plenty of experience. This time, we would like to begin our adventure with this finished album.

6.The new album is coming out on 'Snow Wave Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

We are so proud with our record label signing. They are helping us a lot with the release process. And they have exceeded our expectations in relation of the quantity and quality of the work that's been done.

7.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of melodic and extreme metal?

At the moment we don’t know, as we are still in the process of getting known in the scene, but we are happy with the first good reviews and comments we've received.

8.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We want to continue with the current musical direction, consisting of creating a new sound with known musical elements.

9.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Some of them are Opeth, Amorphis, Kreator, Dimmu Borgir, Dissection, Amon Amarth, Ensiferum, Mors Principium est, Death and many more. I have always liked the most melodic side of extreme metal music, although I look to create contrast in all of our songs.

Nowadays, I’m listening to some old school albums from bands like Death, Amorphis, Opeth, Mork Gryning, At the gates, Dimmu Borgir and Iron Maiden. Some of the new albums I’m listening to are “Queen of Time” from Amorphis and “Twisted Prayers” from Gruesome.

10.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

We would like to thank you to all of you for sharing and listening to our music. If you want to stay tuned for news, check us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. You can pre-order our debut album “Silent Witness” from the Snow Wave Records website.

Mordant Rapture Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

We are a three piece Tech Death/ Black Metal band with symphonic elements based out of the Bay Area in California. We’re a bunch of nerds that love video game and movie soundtracks and all things death and black metal.

2.Recently you have released an ep, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

The ep was intended to be somewhat of a sample platter for the sound of the band. As technical and complex as some of the material might get, we try to prioritize melody and memorable sections as much as possible. We try to aim for a wall of sound with the tracks, but at the same time try to keep things focused on the main motifs being played.

3.The band has been around since 2013 but waited until 2018 to release any music, can you tell us a little bit more about the first 4 years?

The first few years we focused on trying to get out and play live as much as we could. The sound of the band was nothing like what is on this ep. It was still fast, as speed has always been an obsession for better or worse, but had none of the cinematic elements or virtual instruments involved nor did it have much of a classical influence. There was less emphasis on song structure and melodic moments and more on aggression and heaviness. The years leading up to this release was kind of a rocky road as far as refining our sound. Our influences changed, we all grew as song writers, and kind of naturally moved away from 100% aggression focused music. Of course we are a metal band so aggression is part of the DNA regardless, but we came to appreciate classical and symphonic elements and approaching song writing with the goal of sounding more emotive and moving without sacrificing intensity.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

While death and supernatural elements are kind of staple in this genre, we wanted to also explore some of the darker aspects of the depths of humanity and the problems that arise in the fragility of social order. Each track tells part of a story that forms a larger narrative of tragedy that raises questions about the human condition.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Mordant Rapture?

The meaning of “Mordant Rapture” can be interpreted in several ways, but at its core we agree with the idea that a release from the hardships and trials of life would be rapturous but ultimately futile in its purpose, because there is no guarantee that what is awaiting us on the other side is worth all the pain and sacrifice that it takes to get there. Ultimately, a rapture is really a cruel joke, and therefore, mordant.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Although we haven’t played live with this material, the previous “iteration” of the band had plenty of memorable shows that include dressing up as street walkers, someone almost getting stabbed (not our fault), and one so memorable that we can’t remember most of it after some drinks. Moving forward with this material you can expect a more focused, precise, and intense stage presence.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for 2018?

As soon as we get a live lineup we are ready to hit the road.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black and death metal?

Overwhelmingly positive! We appreciate all the kind words; we feel fans of both genres can take away something from this material. The takeaway for us based on all the positive feedback is that the vision we sought after was worthwhile and we hope to continue to please the masses.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We want expand on all the elements from the EP by delving more into the orchestral side while bringing something new to the technical side. We learned a lot from this recording on how to apply symphonic layers to the rest of the band and what works and doesn’t work. We plan on incorporating a much denser symphonic sound that plays just as big of a role as any other instrument in the band. We’ve upgraded all of our virtual instruments as well as a much needed computer upgrade so we will be able to push these sounds much further on the next release.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Spawn of possession, Emperor, Beneath The Massacre, most classical/movie scores just to name a few. As for new music right now; Artificial Brain, Inferi, Slugdge, Virvum, First Fragment, Gorod, Archspire, Han Zimmer, Sergei Prokofiev, Nobuyoshi Suzuki.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

Ellie (Ben’s pooch), cooking, reading, hiking, video games, writing, painting.

12. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

We just want to thank everyone for taking the time to listen to us and sharing our music. We are currently working on our full-length album so if you want to stay informed I would invite you to follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter thanks!
