W.E.B/Tartarus/Apathia Records/2017 Full Length eview

W.E.B  are  a  band  from  Greece  that  plays  a  symphonic  mixture  of  black  and  gothic  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Tartarus"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Apathia  Records.

Stringed  instruments  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  keyboards  a  few  seconds  later  that  also  add  in  touches  of  classical  music  which  also  leads  to  more  of  a  symphonic  direction  and  they  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  while  a  great amount  of  grim  black  metal  screams  can  be  heard.

Death  metal  growls  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  while  operatic  vocals  are  also  used  briefly  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

Tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  faster  riffing  while  some  of  the  tracks  are  a  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  music  also  incorporates  a  decent  amount  of  goth  metal  elements  and  you  can  also  hear  a  great  amount  of  melody  in  the  guitar  riffing  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  can  be  heard  and  one  song  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  parts  and  the  one  track  that  uses  clean  vocals  are  provided  by  Sotris  Vayenas  of  Septic  Flesh  and  a  later  song  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  female  vocals.

W.E.B  plays  a  musical  style  that  is  mostly  rooted  in  symphonic  black  metal  while  also  mixing  in  a  decent  amount  of  goth  elements,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Melancholy,  Darkness  and  Greek  Mythology  themes.

In  my  opinion  W.E.B  are  a  very  great  sounding  symphonic  mixture  of  black  and  goth  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Tartarus"  "I,  The  Bornless"  and  "Thanatos  Part  II  -  Epitaphios".  8/5  out  of  10.

Atriarch/Dead As Truth/Relapse Records/2017 CD Review

Atriarch  are  a  band  from  Portland,  Oregon  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  blackened  mixture  of  doom  and  sludge  metal  along  with  some  elements  of  noise,  death  rock  and  post  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Dead  As  Truth"  which  will  be  released  in  August  by  Relapse  Records.

Ambient  noise  sounds  start  off  the  album  and  after  a  few  seconds  drum  beats  and  melodic  vocals  are  added  onto  the recording  which  leads  up  to  more  of  a  heavier  sludge  and  doom  metal  direction  and  after  awhile  elements  of  death  rock  and  goth  are  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  some  black  metal  screams.

Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  atmospheric  synths  are  also  used  at  times  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  punk  fashion and  and  on  one  of  the  alter  tracks  the  music  speeds  up a   bit  along  with  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  while  the  last  song  also  introduces  acoustic  guitars  onto  the  recording

Atriarch  remains  true  to  the  blackened  sludge/doom  metal  and  death  rock  mixture  of  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness,  death,  destruction  and  hate  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Atriarch  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  death  rock,  black,  doom  and  sludge  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Inferno"  and  "Hopeless".  8  out  of  10.

Cadaveria Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
Cadaveria: After the fifth full length album “Silence”, CADAVERIA just released the new EP “Mondoscuro”, joining forces with thrash metal legends Necrodeath. The EP contains six tracks, two brand new and co-written songs (Dominion of Pain and Ride Above), two covers (one of The Beatles and one of Type O Negative) and two unusual “exchange of roles”, that see CADAVERIA reinterpreting a classic by Necrodeath and Necrodeath performing a CADAVERIA hit. Mondoscuro was released on September the 2nd via Black Tears on CD and will be soon released in vinyl via Sleaszy Rider records.

2.How would you describe the musical sound of the newer music?
Cadaveria: While covering mater Tenebrarum from Necrodeath and Christian Woman from Type O Negative we maintained our personal style, that since the beginning mixes Black metal and Gothic metal with Horror atmospheres, and we confirmed our love for contaminations in music. Our version of Mater Tenebrarum ends with an outro taken from Dario Argento’s “Inferno” movie theme, originally composed by Keith Emerson. A cover in the cover… We had the pleasure to guest Lindsay Schoolcraft from Cradle of Filth in this piece. “Dominion of Pain” track can be considered a natural evolution of what we offered with “Silence” album: a genuine horror and black metal oriented song that welcomes Doom metal and gothic influences. The lyrics deal with spiritual growth and inner power.

3.Your lyrics deal with Occultism and Witchcraft can tell you us a little bit more of your views on these topics?
Cadaveria: My lyrics deal with my personal experiences in the material world and in my metal realm. Along the last fifteen years my approach to intangible dimensions has became more intimate and solitary. I completed a path that allowed me to better known my soul and to reach a higher level of self confidence.

4.On the split you had also done a Type O Negative cover, what was the decision behind doing your own version of the song?
Cadaveria: Type O Negative and Bloody Kisses album in particular were a constant sound track of my adolescence. They are probably the main responsible of the Gothic halo now evoked by CADAVERIA music and also my band mate are great fans of TON. Among the songs they released, Christian Woman is quite far from CADAVERIA musical approach… and probably this is the main reason why we chose it. It was a challenge to perform a song written by a man for a man, I mean it is not in my chords! But I cannot resist to the temptation to sing “Jesus Christ looks like me”. It’s so sacrilegious and erotic!

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Over the last four years we had great tour seasons: in Mexico, where we did two headline tours, or supporting Cradle of Filth last year. I also enjoyed a lot Autumn Moon festival in Germany and French Rock Metal Camp as well as Metal Female Voices Fest in Belgium. The show in Russia was very good too, we didn’t imagine to have so many fans over there! Recently we played at an important festival in Italy with Insomnium, Demolition Hammer, Dark Tranquillity and Sodom where we did a one night only special show with Necrodeath, inspired to Mondoscuro. This is probably the best show I did in my life. We finally had the opportunity to enrich our music with the proper scenic designs and the result was really great! Our live performances are built in the name of true heavy metal music and can be described as a ceremony of passion, energy and theatricality.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
Cadaveria: We will start a new live season in Spring 2017. In the meanwhile we will approach to new compositions for out 6th full length album and we will re-release our second album Far Away From Conformity.

7.Recently you where a part of a split with 'Necrodeath', what are your thoughts on the other band that had participated on the recording?
Cadaveria: Well Necrodeath are our “cousins”, we share two band members with them: our Drummer Marçelo Santos is better known as Necrodeath singer  Flegias and recently GL, Necrodeath bassist, entered CADAVERIA band using nick name Peter Dayton. Necrodeath and CADAVERIA have always walk along parallel paths without meeting each other. Last year we finally had the opportunity to create something together, signing an artistic blood pact that gave life to a new evil creature named Mondoscuro. This EP is a birth and a death at the same time, it is a unique chapter in the bands’ careers that will never be repeated in the future. Mondoscuro is destined to become a rarity and a must have for fans of both the bands. I’m very satisfied of this release and of this cooperation.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black and goth metal?
Cadaveria: Considering we are a do it yourself band, we are totally free in our choices, we never paid to play and we don’t follow any trend, I can say we reached great goals along these fifteen years. We are appreciated and respected and this is a very good thing. Above all we like the idea to continue to create the music we like without boundaries and we know our fans will support us in every step we will do.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Cadaveria: We will take our time to properly develop our ideas for the sixth album, that will probably see the light in the beginning of 2018. It will be THE album, our best release, something to be proud of for the rest of our days. This is how we see us in the future.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Cadaveria: The band members have a different musical background that goes from thresh metal to doom metal, passing through black, death and gothic. We do not have any particular reference, our music is just the product of our growth as musicians and human beings. Mercyful Fate, My Dying Bride and Norwegian black metal have been my first love. Nowadays I also listen to some stoner metal and progressive metal. My favorite band are and will always be Tool.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?
Cadaveria: I am a video maker and I’m interested in making videos, watching movies and in visiting contemporary art exhibitions. I also like to travel around the globe. I became vegetarian about one year ago and now I like to discover new vegetarian and vegan food.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Cadaveria: I just would like to thank you for this space dedicated to my band and to give my greetings to all the readers. You can reach us out at cadaveria.com If you like you can follow me on Instagram @cadaveriaofficial
Thanks.

Cadaveria/Necrodeath/Mondoscuro/Sleaszy Rider Records/2016 Split EP Review

This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  Italy's  Cadaveria  and  Necrodeath  called  "Mondoscuro"  which  was  released  by  Sleaszy  Rider  Records  and  we  will start  off  the  review  with  Cadaveria  and  band  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  and  gothic  metal.

Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  cover  of  Necrodeath's  "Mater  Tenebrarum"  which  starts  out  with  dark  sounding  synths  before  going  into  a  heavier  and  faster  direction  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  black  metal  screams  and  they  also  keep  the  thrash  elements  of  the  original  version  and  clean  guitars  along  with  melodic  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  some  melodic  riffing  and  the  solos  and  leads  have  an  old  school  vibe  to  them  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  operatic  male  vocals     and  their  songs  also  bring  in a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  they  close  their  side  of  the  split  with  a  cover  of  Type  O  Negative's  "Christian  Woman".

Cadaveria  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black  and  goth  metal  and  mixes them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover   Occultism  and  Witchcraft  themes.

In  my  opinion  Cadaveria  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black  and  goth  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Dominion  Of  Pain".

Next  up  is  Necrodeath  a  band  from  the  first  wave  of  black  metal.

Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out with  a  cover of  Necrodeath's  "Spell" which  starts  out  with  starts  out with  classical  guitars  and  grim  black  metal  vocals  and  death  metal  growls  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  they  also  mix  in  their  thrash  approach  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  parts  of  the  songs.

When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  the  songs  also  bring  in a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  there  is  also a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and female  vocals  and  they  close  their  side  of  the split with  a  cover  of  The  beattles "Helter  Skelter".

Necrodeath  plays  a  musical  style  that  is  still  rotted  in  their  first  wave  black  and  thrash  metal  while  also  mixing  in  more  modern  styles,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and occult  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Necrodeath  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Rise  Above".

In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of black  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Dark Portrait Interview

Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
Currently, our singer fulfils his army duties that are obligatory in Greece.  The rest of the band is constantly jamming and rehearsing in order to compose and create new material for future songs.

2. In April you had released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
Our previous release was an EP named “Fiend Incarnate” and was released in the band’s early stages.
In April we released our full length album named ‘’A Harrowing Atrocity’’. We think of this album as a leap from our previous work because it was exactly what we had in our minds about our sound; from the music to the lyrics, from its power, presence and length to its meaning and ability to make the listener travel via our music.
The sound cannot be easily defined or categorised and we are fine with that. We like to refer to our music as ‘majestic black metal’ as if it is a new genre that we can call our own.

3. This is your first release in 4 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time span?
In Greece, where we live, there is only a small portion of the population that listens to metal or any kind of heavy music. These 4 years that passed since our last release we were on the hunt of Greek audience. We were constantly trying to book as many live gigs as possible and meet as many people as possible because we wanted to create a fan-base that could provide feedback about our work as we were working on it and because the contact with the audience is what feeds an artist’s mindset to keep up the work and channel the positivity and energy to our music compositions or lyrics.
‘A Harrowing Atrocity’ is an album that derived from what was given to us spiritually through our fans.

4. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music?
Main topic of the song writing are Greek Mythical characters unveiling their darkest sides through sinful tales or even imaginary entities that praise what’s dark and part of the occult and chaos. But if you let yourself think and dream, or even try to think yourself as if you were inside the stories, you can relieve past experiences  through a weird, distorted and dark feeling if you translate our lyrics’ metaphors.

5. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Dark Portrait'?
It was not an easy task to find a proper name for our Band.
We always had the vision of our music making the audience part of our lyrical stories; and we wanted to incorporate this vision to our band’s name. Our main goal was to let those who want to relate to our music create an imaginary picture of them that defines their image when being a part of our tales.
‘Dark Portrait’ is not our portrait. It is a portrait of one’s darkest and unexplored – or even unknown – self.

6. What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
We joined many shows here in Greece. Metal stages and gigs are difficult to be booked and organized and we had to hunt them down. I guess our connections lead to the most renowned metal stages in Greece, opening a couple of huge names of the scene and that got us the experience needed to have a consistent stage performance.
When we are on stage, we all feel that we have the cue to bring our own Dark Portrait characters to perform. We appear as dead and weak corpses that have risen from their tombs but when the melody starts, one can feel the darkness that seems to drive us on stage.

7. Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
We are currently working on our new album and trying to rehearse and jam as we wait for our singer to complete his army duties. When his duties are fulfilled, we have plans about touring Greece for the second part of 2017. After that, given that our second full length album is completed and released, we discuss about touring through Europe.

8. The new album is going to get re-issued on Xperiment XIII, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?
When we were in the hunt of a label to promote us, we contacted as many people as we could so that we could find what deal was the best for our band and our schedule. We found many of them wanting to sign us but we decided to sign with Xperiment XIII because we knew that Clive that runs it was a fan and supporter of our music and our band and because the deal was really close to what we had in mind.

9. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of melodic and symphonic black metal?
Our music tends not to have a lot of things in common with melodic and symphonic black metal. It is an unorthodox approach to both of these genres. In our band’s early stages, we were contacting individuals from other countries via facebook in order to spread the word and gain followers from other countries and different cultures.
Feedback was our next priority.
In general, even people from countries as Finland or the Netherlands that are used to the heaviest and styles of black metal were constantly giving us positive feedback especially for ‘a harrowing atrocity’ album and after its completion we knew that this was the route that both we and the listeners loved.
People from all over the world are still curious about what we have going on

10. What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?
Only our drummer is a part of another musical project. He is a part of a thrash band. They are currently working on a new album as well as they are back from a tour all-over Greece.

11. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Fast forward to the release of our second full length album. After that an after its promotion we will pull as many strings as possible in order to tour Europe to say the least.
Our band is all about interaction with the people, so, after providing the second album, we will try to perform on stage wherever there is an audience.

12. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
These days, the bands that we tend to listen to the most are Carach Angren, Septic Flesh, Rotting Christ, Carpathian Forest, Cradle of Filth, Dark Funeral, Bathory, Watain, Dimmu Borgir and others.
Our influences are our inspiration and we try to create music that they could head bang to the way we do to their songs.

13. How would you describe your views on Occultism?
Occultism is all about what is there to find but the world tends to refuse its presence and functions. It is the rails that our lives roll on but no one will ever admit or accept it because darkness is an unknown place that only few want to discover or even be a part of.
For us, it is a part of one’s self that is definitive and infinite.
It influences us but we try to incorporate it to our music as less profoundly as possible and the reason for that is that we do not want to throw it into the listener’s face. We want him or her to prepare for its truth.

14. What are some of your non-musical interests?
We all enjoy having a beer or two listening to good music or hanging out discussing about our plans and views on the band.
Yeah, some of us have their own hobbies but most of our time goes into our every-day jobs and our band.

15. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
We want the world to know that we create the music that we would listen and head bang to. Our lyrics have many meanings and can be translated to feelings and thoughts that will give you the chance to live them.
Our music for us is not about getting famous or getting payed. It is all about touching hearts and inspires our point of view of the music’s darkness to the listener.
We would keep composing and creating even if no one listened but we are grateful that the world keeps being interested in us and supports us.
That’s the truest thing that drives us.

Eternal Samhain Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

-Hi everyone, Taliesin speaking! We are a Symphonic black metal band from Verona, Italy. This band exists since 2006 and, even if it starts just as a kid passion, it has become something more serious trough time, until we’ve reached a moment when we told ourselves “Where do we want to get with this project? Let’s get it to another level and see what happens”, so here we are!

2.You have an album coming out during the end of October, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

-The sound is very majestic, all the orchestral part of the album has been an hard task to write and compose, but this gave us a great orchestral wall back and this is very important for the band .We’ve tried (and I think we’ve reached our goal) to play symphonic black metal with a lot of influences from classical music, this is what change from the last release, it’s more melodic as well as faster and harder!

3.This is your first release in 5 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time span?

-Unfortunately it’s not easy to find a line-up that works as an ensemble, in the same direction as we are doing now. The past five years went very fast and we changed three band members in order to get to the current line-up, which is where we’ve spent our time, looking for the right guys to play with us and writing down all the stuff for this album.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music?

-The lyrics I wrote, tries to talk about different stuff, from religion as a chain for free thinking/ free thinker, to characters that are symbols for this ideology (the track “Cenere” which means “Ash” talks about Giordano Bruno) , and also about ancient pagan rites that have been wrong-seen through time like the night of Samhain and all the wonderful Celtic pagan tradition, that now are wrongly associated to Satanism, evil and stuff like that.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Eternal Samhain'?

-As I told you before, the band started as a teenager band so, when I was 16 (none of the current members were involved when it all started) we were looking for a name that could stand for something really evil, and seems to us that an “eternal night of the dead” could be the right one as meaning. Than we’ve got in touch with Celtic symbology and tradition and the word “Samhain” seemed great, so here we are, “ Eternal Samhain”

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

-The best shows we’ve played are for sure the support slots for Fleshgod Apocalypse a couple of years ago and the support for Nocturnal Depression at the Eresia Metal Fest last summer. We cannot forget our Show at Padova metal Fest and the gigs at Il Blocco music hall and at Alchemica Music club, that we consider our home.
The Live show we play is very powerful and we try to communicate our energy to the crowd…what else can I say, just come and witness by yourself!

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

-Yes we do. We will be touring Italy this winter to promote the album, there are many things getting ready for this spring but I can’t say anything at the moment…just wait, it will be amazing!

8.Currently you are signed to RNC Music, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

-It’s just great! We never had any experience with a label and RNC’s family hosted us and helped us a lot under every aspect about a release with a label and all the stuff like that.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of symphonic black metal?

-at the moment the album is not out yet so I don’t know, but I can tell you that the release of the single is going very well, in just 3 weeks we’ve reached more than 70 countries worldwide and the general feedback seems to be very good so far!

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Hope as far as we can! We are trying so hard to make this project becoming our life’s job, it’s not easy and we know it but we won’t quit so easily!

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

-Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Dark Funeral, Carach Angren and the Italian pride Fleshgod Apocalypse are the bands that have more influence on us. We listen to a lot of different kinds of music, all metal genres of course, but even folk and classical music are genres that we love to listen to.

12.Does Paganism or Occultism play any role in your music?

-Yes it does but as a cultural matter. We do not believe in a kind of god, nature and ourselves are our gods. we could talk about what we believe or think for several hours of course!

13.What are some of your non musical interests?

-There are so many things we love to do, like sports and other arts, but basically music is our true love and passion.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

-yes,We would like to thank all those who made this possible!
