Nervochaos/The Art Of Vengeance/Greyhaze Records/2014 CD Review

Nervochaos  are  a  band  from  Brazil  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal, doom,  death,  thrash  and  hardcore  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "The  Art  Of  Vengeance"  which  will  be  released  in  December  by  Greyhaze  Records.

A  very  old  school  thrash  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  death  metal  growls  before  speeding  up  and  adding  in  hardcore  punk  style  shouts  and  the  music  sticks  mostly  to  a  mid  80's  to  early  90's  style  of  extreme  metal  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  the  raw  energy  of  grindcore  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them..

You  can  tell  the  band  is  heavily  influenced  by  the  Brazilian  thrash,  death  and  black  metal  bands  of the  80's  in  the  way  they  structure  there  songs  and  a  lot  of  their  fast  riffing  and  screams  bring  in  an  old  school  black  metal  feeling  while  the thrash  and  death  metal  elements  are  still  a  very  strong  part  of  the  bands  musical  style  and  at  time s they  also  add  in  small  amounts  of  melody  to  their  aggressive  sound.

When  the  music  slows  down  the  album  starts  showing  more  of  an  early  90's  doom/death  metal  feeling  and  when  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  but  remain  true  to  an  old  school  style  of  death  metal,  one  some  of  the  later  tracks  spoken  word  parts  can  be  heard  at  times.

Nervochaos  go  back  to  the  mid  80's  and  early  90's  styles  of  death,  thrash,  black  and  doom  metal  and  combine  them  to  create   a  sound  of  their  own  along  with  the  energy  of  grindcore  and  punk,  the  production  sounds  very  old  school  yet  professional  at  the  same  times  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Anti  Christian,  Dark  and  Violent  themes.

In  my  opinion  Nervochaos  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  death,  thrash,  black  metal,  doom,  grind  and  punk  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Harvest"  "The  Devil's  Work"  "Blood  Ritual"  and  "The  Legacy  Is  Pain".  8  out  of  10.

Hombre Malo/Persistent Murmur Of Words And Wrath/Disciplin Media/2014 CD Review

Hombre  Malo  are  a  band  from  Norway  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  sludge  and  hardcore  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Persistent  Murmur  Of  Words  And  Wrath"  which  was  released  by  Disciplin  Media.

A  very  dark  and  melodic  sludge  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  aggressive  vocals  a  few  seconds  later  that  also  use  some  rough  sounding  melodies  as  well  as  a  great  amount  of  high  pitched  screams  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  and  samples   being  utilized  at  times  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  bringing  in  a  more  melodic  side  of  noise  rock.

You  can  hear  a  heavy  influence  from  post  hardcore  in  the  bands  musical  sound  along  with  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal  and  after  awhile  blast  beats  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  as  the  album  progresses  you  can  hear  more  of  a  black  metal  style  being  mixed  in  the  bands  musical  sound  as  well  as  a  great  amount  of  punk  rock  style  energy  and  the  band  also  uses  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

A  good  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  they  also  add  times  bring  in  the  rawness  of  crustcore  and  a  good  portion  of  the  music  has  a  90's  feeling  to  them  while  the  black  metal influence  updates  the  music  for  the  modern  day  and  every  track  has  a  sound  of  its  own  while  you  can  still  tell  that  it  is  the  same  band  playing  them  all.

Hombre  Malo  plays  a  style  that  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  sludge,  punk  and  noise  rock  from t he  90's  era  while  also  mixing  it  in  with  the  energy  and  grimness  of  black  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  both  Norwegian  and  English  and  cover  dark  and  angry  themes.

In  my  opinion  Hombre  Malo  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black  metal,  sludge  and  hardcore  punk  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Crosses  And  Marching  Feet"  "Reaching  the  Shore"  and  "Deathbed  Confession".  8  out  of  10.

Chain Of Dogs Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

Well, quite a lot actually: we have four new band members, only two of the original members are left. The music will change in a way, we have added some other instruments and we have a female band member again: a permanent vocalist who also plays some folk instruments.
Our label, Witches Brew, made a restart a while back and provided us with the opportunity to release a new full-length compilation CD. Where also planning to release a new vinyl EP this summer and we're booking a lot of new gigs. Among them are several festivals of which Metaldays in Slovenia is the biggest.

2.How would you describe your musical sound for those that have yet to hear the music?

It's a form folk metal based on thrash metal instead of the more standard viking or power metal influences. There is also a big dose of punk and some black metal. The folk influences range from Irish Celtic through Finnish to Balkan or even medieval.
Basically we put in any music we like, as long as it's fast or heavy, and mix that with folk. Our music is fast and energetic, and also pretty blunt and raw. We don't try to make "pretty and shiny" epic folk metal and we're not a pagan metal band.

3.Can you tell us a little bit more about the compilation album that you have just released?

Over the past couple of years we self-released a demo and a couple EP's and one full length through Witches Brew. This album gives a pretty good view of what Chain of Dogs have been up to since the beginning. There's the songs from the EPs plus some demo-tracks, unreleased remixed tracks of the full length and a short song from a recording session we never used.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

The part of our lyrics that's in the Limburgian dialect (which some people might confuse with Dutch or German) is mostly about the history, myths & sagas from our region, although from a different viewpoint than more traditional music from around here. Another important part and the main topic of our English lyrics is based on dark fantasy and horror, think of werewolves and the gruesome things you can do to hobbits!

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Chain of Dogs'?

"Chain of Dogs" is an event in one of the books of fantasy author Steven Erikson. He writes a pretty raw and dark form of fantasy that appeals to the roughness we like to have in our music. The lyrics from songs like Blood Follows and Bridgeburners are directly based on his work.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

One of the highlights was definitely the Black Trolls Over Europe Tour we did in 2011 with bands like Suidakra and Waylander, especially Black Troll Winterfest and the date in Prague was cool. We also had some great regional gigs such as Skullyfest in Geleen or the smaller festivals we organised ourselves in Fenix in Sittard. The Sodom Metal Nights are always great gigs to play. We've had a couple of great gigs with Heidevolk too throughout the Netherlands.
Our stage performance is mostly very raw and energetic, with a touch of horror-fun. We don't try to reproduce the things you can do in a studio but try to build a powerful gig where people can have a party in the pit.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

Of course! Very soon (March 22) we're going to celebrate the release of our cd. Furthermore we're looking forward to our gig at Metaldays in Slovenia.
We've just started booking more shows for the time to come as we wanted to focus on getting our new lineup ready to destroy! Nothing has been confirmed as yet but there's a lot in the pipeline.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of folk metal and thrash?

Up to now it's been very difficult to get into contact with people overseas, but we're getting there. In general, people are skeptical at first because of the mix of styles we use. Our deliberate lack of "Pagan" gives some doubt to the more basic folk-metal fans while the thrash-oriented side of our audience are usually a bit disturbed when they see our mandolin, flute and violin...
But once people have been listening for more than 1.5 minute they have a hard time standing still and weird things start to happen, like conga lines through a wall of death or square dancers in a circle pit.
No need to say that both the folk-lovers and thrashers are mostly positively surprised.

9.When can we expect another full length album and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We have started writing new songs for our upcoming EP. We expect to start recording the next full length around the beginning of 2015.
As far as the music itself is concerned; right now it is somewhat difficult to point to one direction. We hope the music will be rawer and grittier without losing the melodic element. A mix of unpolished Celtic folk and thrash metal will always be the basis of our music, but we'll probably explore some more influences like balkan folk or gypsy music.

10.What are some bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Our main influences are obviously thrash metal and various styles of folk music, with some polka and hummpa, quite a lot of punk and a bit of black metal.
We take some inspiration from classical music, also some country and blues.
This is basically the music we're listening to, but all band members have different preferences. For example, some members also regularly  listen to reggae, psychobilly or progressive rock/metal. Pretty much most existing music styles are acceptable except for R&B, Emo and breakcore.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

This goes for the entire band: collecting toys like Playmobil & Lego, gaming, Carnival, barbecues and beer, epic movies, fantasy books, hanging around outside, either at a festival or in open nature, making campfires, hiking and hunting hobbits. Samana even likes sports.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Kloeëte, mie beer is leag (damn, my beer is empty).

Chain Of Dogs/Burning Bridges In A World Of Death-De Ep's En Nog Get Miee/Witches Brew/2014 CD Review

Chain  Of  Dogs  are  a  band  from  the  Netherlands  that  play  a  mixture  of  folk  metal,  punk  and  thrash  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  'Burning  Bridges  In  A  World  Of  Death - De  Ep's  En  Nog  Get  Miee"  which  was  released  by  Witches  brew.

The  album  starts  out  with  an  intro  that  utilizes  traditional  folk  music  instruments  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  a  more  folk  metal  direction  while  the  guitars  and  vocals  are  more  closer  to  thrash  metal  while  they  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  singing.

When  the  album  goes  into  other  songs  they  start  bringing  in  a  small  amount  of  grim  black  metal  vocals,  death  metal  growls  and  punk  influences  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars  and  you  can  also  hear  back  up  gang  shouts  and  melodic  pagan  chanting  in  the  music.

When  we  get  more  into  the  album  the  music  starts  speeding  up  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  you  can  also  hear  blast  beats  at  times  and  they  also  bring  in  an  intro,  re-mixes  and  demo  songs  as  the  bonus  tracks.

With  this  album  Chain  of  Dogs  bring  in  a  very  original  approach  to  folk  metal  with  the  way  they  mix  thrash  and  punk  with  this  genre  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  while  also  bringing  in  death  and  black  metal  influences  in  the  heavier  sections  of  the  recording.

Song  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  Dutch  and  English  and  cover  drinking  and  folklore  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.

In  my  opinion  Chain  of  Dogs  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  folk  metal,  punk  and  thrash  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "D'r  Zjwarte  Hond  va  Krapoel"  "Blood  Follows"  "Bridgeburners"  and  "Tooth  And  Jaw".  8/5  out  of  10.

"The  Experiment"  starts  up  with  noises  made  from  natural  things  before  adding  in  some  dark  ambient  style  synths  and  towards  the  end  it  goes  silent  for  a  few  seconds  and  then  brings  in  element  of  harsh  noise  and  screams.

R: We write about hell and damnation! What did you expect?
E: And about witchery and the occult.

4. I can tell by the bands name and music there is a huge Hellhammer influence, can you tell us what is about Hellhammer that inspired this project and also what are your views of Tom G Warrior disowning his first band?
R: You're right about the HellHammer influence! It should be an influence in every band. HellHammer is just one of the best bands ever (early Celtic Frost too). There's just something magical in those songs, they really don't make 'em like that anymore. My views on Tom G Warrior these days: he should do whatever he wants, this guy is a living legend.
E: Yes Hellhammer and the two first albums of Celtic Frost are our main influence. I really dig the new sound Tom G Warrior has created with Monotheist and Triptykon. I can't wait to hear the new album.

5. I have noticed that the 2 members live in different countries, how do you both work on the song writing and recording process?
R: That's right! I live in The Netherlands and E lives in France, about 600 km apart from each other. There is no other way than to mail each other a shitload of demo recordings and ideas, so that's what we do. When the basics of the songs are fully explored, we record drums, bass and guitars in our rehearsal rooms. I then make a mix and from there on we start working on vocals and solos. It takes a lot of time, but it's worth it!
E: I think it's a good thing to be in a 2 members band. It's easier to agree on riff ideas and song structures. On the other hand, It'd be definetely easier if we both lived in the same town.

6. Currently your stuff is being put out by Bestial Invasion Records, how did you come in contact with this label and how would you describe the support that they have given the band so far?
R: Dominik of Bestial Invasion Records is really the best guy ever! When we put our first demo track on myspace he contacted us and said he wanted to release it! So he started Bestial Invasion Records. The amount of releases he put out is insane! He trades actively with all the cool distros around the world, like Hells Headbangers for example. It's really cool to see that our records are sold all over the planet. Without Dominik's support we couldn't have done this!
E: Eternal hails to Dominik!

7. Are there any other projects besides this band?
R: I also play in an experimental project and a noise project. Nothing that's really interesting for the people that like DungeönHammer...
E: DungeönHammer is my priority at the moment.

8. On a worldwide level how has your music been recieved by underground metal fans?
R: Really well! We were really surprised about that! Our first split with the Necro-Thrashers of RUST got some great reviews and is already sold out at Bestial Invasion Records! That's 500 records in 1 year! We are still really happy with that split and it's great to notice that the fans like it too.
E: We had a lot of positive reactions from true old school metal fans which is the most important thing for me.

9. What direction do you see the music heading into on future releases?
E: Same direction, making badass tracks from hell!
R: Yeah, we keep on heading in the same direction as the last 2 releases.

10. Besides Hellhammer what are some other bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
R: Bathory, Motörhead and Discharge are my main influences for DungeönHammer. For the rest I listen to grindcore and experimental stuff, I don't listen to a lot of black metal.
E: My main influences are of course the first wave of black metal but also some doom metal and 70s rock too. I'm a huge fan of Pentagram and Saint Vitus.

11. Does Satanism or Occultism play a role in the music?
R: It does not play any role for me.
E: Occultism plays a role in the lyrics writing.

12. Outside of music, what are some of your interests?
R: The usual stuff: hanging with friends, listening music, watching movies, going to gigs...
E: Headbanging, hanging out in pubs...

13. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

DungeonHammer/Frozen Wasteland/Bestial Invasion Records/2010 Split 7 Inch Review

DungeonHammer are a band that has members from both France and Holland that mixes thrash, black metal , doom and punk together and this is a review of their 2011 split 7 inch which was released by Bestial Invasion Records.

Drums range from slow to mid paced drumming with not much in the way of fast playing or blast beats, while the bass playing has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars.

Rhythm guitars range from slow to mid paced riffs that combine black, doom, thrash and punk together together to create a sound that is very dark and could of easily came out in the 80's, while the lead guitars are very raw and chaotic sounding guitar solos and leads.

Vocals are in the vein of Celtic Frost and Hellhammer style grunts and growls, while the lyrics cover dark and evil themes, as for the production it has a very raw, primitive, and dark sounding 80's feeling to it.

In my opinion DungeonHammer are a very good old school sounding black/thrash/doom metal band and if you are a fan of this style, you should check out this. RECOMMENDED BUY.

Planks/The Darkest Of Grays Solicit To Fail/Southern Lord Records/2011 CD Review

Planks are a band from Germany that mixes crust/punk noise rock, black metal and black'n' roll together and this is a review of their 2011 album The Darkest Of Grays Solicit To Fail" which was released by Southern Lord Records.

Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with a good amount of blast beats being thrown in, while the bass playing has a very heavy and strong tone with a lot of powerful sounding riffs that are very noisy and distorted, as for the synths which are only utilized briefly they bring a very dark avant garde edge to the music.

Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast riffs that combine influences from crust/punk, noise rock, black metal and black 'n' roll  to create a sound that is very original sounding and on the instrumental there is some soft and slow playing, while the lead guitars when they are utilized they are very dark, distorted and melodic sounding.

Vocals are a mixture of crust/hardcore style yells and screams that are also heavily influenced by black metal with some occasional spoken word passages and samples, while the lyrics cover everyday and hateful themes, as for the production it has a very heavy and raw sound to it while still being professional enough to the point where you can hear all of the musical instruments.

In my opinion Planks are a very good and original band that combines sludge with noise rock, crust/punk, black metal and black'n' roll together and if you are looking for a band that combines these styles together, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Sacred And Secret" "The Dead Return To War" "A Casket City" and "Into The Nothingness Within". RECOMMENDED BUY.
