Solarsteinn Interview

SOLARSTEINN - interview -

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?
I'm also the lead singer / guitarist of Rising Moon, and after 15 years of swedish death metal for me it was time to try something different. I am passionate about classical music that I tried to mix it with  metal. I also love the Nordic culture and then the equation is simple: classical music, metal, Nordic culture = Viking metal. This is the beginning of the Solarsteinn project.

2.Recently you have released an ep, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
I think it is the right mix of metal and classical music. I tried to write a little soundtrack. A song that had a
beginning, a middle and an ending well defined. Looking for the right mix between metal and classical music.

3.The lyrics on the ep where based on the Norse ballads of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow , can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this author and Norse Paganism?
I hate writing lyrics, I prefer to focus on the music and a day on the internet I discovered "The Musician's Tale" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow from "Tales of a Wayside Inn". "The challenge of Thor" is the first song of the poem. I immediately liked the text, it was perfect for the song.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Solarsteinn'?
Solarsteinn is the Iceland term for "sunstone". It 's a mineral used to locate the sun in a completely overcast sky and then allows surfers to navigate even in extreme conditions. To me it has a big metaphorical meaning, such as the ability and strength to move in life, even in moments of great difficulty.

5.Currently there is only 1 member in the band, are you planning on expanding the line up in the future or do you choose to remain solo?
I think Solarsteinn remain a one man band, but do not rule out future involvement of other people in the
recordings. I want to have control of the project to 100% and write everything I want without discussions with other people.

6.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
I am looking for a label willing to publish the Ep or a future job. I hope to find one interested in the project. Those who contacted me were more interested in my money to my music. I'll wait a little longer, then I'll print in limited edition.

7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of the viking, pagan and folk metal genres?
There are various reviews and are all good, I'm very happy. I did not expect, to have good results is stimulating to continue to get better and better. Many people write me to have a copy of the CD and all I have to answer that is not available. Then label around the world do your thing, and print the Ep, ahhaha !!!

8.Are you also involved with any other musical projects?

As Rising Moon's  singer/guitarist, a swedish death metal band, a mix of At The Gates and Hypocrisy style. We made five albums. But when the band stops and I can concentrate better on Solarsteinn. !!

9.When can we expect a full length album and also where do you see yourself heading into musically during the future?
These days I started writing full. I have to reorder many ideas I had and rearrange it. This time I would like to make a song more than 30 minutes and divide them into chapters. We'll see. As for my future in music I can tell you that I will play until I live. My days are filled with music, work in my recording studio "Alien Recording Studio", I write music, I collaborate with other bands. My life is music 100%.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
I started listening  metal with Iron Maiden, they made me love music. Then I discovered so many other bands. I like the swedish death of At The Gates, but I also listen the brutal of Suffocation and the black of Dissection. For some years I am also interested in viking and folk, and I follow  Moonsorrow, Finntroll, Falkenbach and many others.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?
I like all the arts, I like drawing in charcoal, read books, watch movies, are passionate about food and cooking for friends. Somehow I keep myself busy.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Thank you for this nice interview and for the space on your webzine, for those interested in the band you can follow me and contact me on the facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/solarsteinn
Thank You.  Greetings from Italy.

Solarsteinn/The Challenge Of Thor/2014 EP Review

Solarsteinn  are  a  1  man  band  from  Italy  that  plays  a  mixture  of  viking,  pagan,  melodic  black  and  folk  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2014  ep  "The  Challenge  Of  Thor".

Thunder  sounds  and  viking  warships  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  dark  sounding  synths  which  leads  up  to  acoustic  guitars  and  flutes  that  add  in  a  medieval  folk  music  feeling  to  the  18  minute  track  which  can  also  be  very  epic  at  times  and  after  awhile  heavy  and  melodic  guitars  are  added  into  the  song  taking  the  recording  into  a  pagan  metal  direction.

When  vocals  are  added  into  the  music  they  are  growls  and  screams  that  are  more  in  tune  with  both  black  and  death  metal  and  you  can  also  hear  a  great  amount  of  melodic  guitar  solos  and  leads  in  the  track  and  in  certain  sections  of  the  track  you  can  also  hear  melodic  viking  chants  and the  synths  also  make  their  return  at  times  giving  the  music  a  symphonic  feeling  and  closer  to  the  end  the  song  speeds  up  a  bit  and  brings  in  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats.

Solarsteinn  creates  an  18  minute  track  that  brings  in  a  melodic  black/death  metal  sound  and  mixes  it  in  with  pagan,  viking  and  folk  metal  to  create  an  epic  song,  the  production  has  a  very  professional  sound  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  are  based  on  Henry  Wadsworth  Longfellow's  Norse  ballads.

In  my  opinion  Solarsteinn  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  viking,  pagan,  melodic  black  and  folk  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  8  out  of  10.

Portal/For All That Is Damned To Vanish/Vic Records/2014 CD Review

Portal  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  plays  a  viking  form  of  melodic  black/death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "For  All  That  Is  Damned  to  Vanish"  which  was  released  by  Vic  Records.

The  album  starts  out  with  some  fast  melodic  death  metal  guitar  riffs  and  drums  and  a  few  seconds  alter  black  metal  screams  and  growls  are  thrown  into  the  music  along  with  a  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  some  blast  beats  and  a  few  minutes  later  solos  are  added  into  the  music  as  well  as  some  clean  singing.

As  the  album  progresses  a  good  amount  of  catchy  melodies  are  added  into  the  music  along  with  some  mid  90's  early  2000's  melodic  Swedish  death  metal  influences  and  the  last  beats  also  start  getting  more  powerful  in  the  other  songs  as  well  as  the  melodic  vocals  bringing  in  elements  of  viking  metal  and  you  can  also  hear  some  modern  melodic  death  metal  elements  being  added  into  the  music.

On  the  fourth  song  Acoustic  guitars  are  added  into  the  recording  and  they  also  help  enhance  the  Viking  and  Pagan  elements  of  the  record  as  well  as  bring  in  some  medieval  sounds  but  the  music  on  the  album  focuses  mainly  on  the  heavy  and  melodic  parts  and  when  spoken  word  parts  are  added  in  the  music  starts  utilizing  a  more  war  like  feeling.

On  this  recording  the  band  shows  a  lot  of  skill  and  talent  with  the  way  they  can  mix  heaviness,  brutality  and  melody  together  and  they  also  take  an  old  school  sound  an  mix  in  some  modern  elements  to  make  the  music  sound  a  lot  more  powerful.

Song  lyrics  cover  Mysticism,  Viking/Norse  Mythology  and  Anti  Christian  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  along  with  the  bass  guitars  being  mixed  down  low  in  the  mix.

In  my  opinion  Portal  are  a  very  great  sounding  melodic  viking  black/death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "In  The  Steps  of  Forgotten  Gods"  "The  Wild  And  Furious"  "In  Chase  For  The  Sun"  and  "Kamp".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Amon Amarth/Deceiver Of The Gods/Metal Blade Records/2013 CD Review

Amon  Amarth  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  with  the  new  recording  staying  in  the  direction  of  melodic  viking/black/death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "Deceiver  Of  The  Gods"  which  was  released  by  Metal  Blade  Records.

Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  thrown  into  the  music,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming out  of  the  guitars.

Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  riffs  that  combine  melodic  death  and  black  metal  together  along  with  some  thrash,  doom  and  traditional  metal  influences  being  thrown  into  the  riffing  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  melodic  sounding  death  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads.

Vocals  are  mostly deep  death  metal  growls  with  some  high  pitched  screams  being  used  at  times  as  well  as  a  brief  spoken  word  part  as  well  as  a  small  amount  of  clean  singing,  while  the  lyrics  cover  Asataru  and  Northern  Paganism  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  to  it  with  the  last  song  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Amon  Amarth  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "As  Loke  Falls"  "Under  Siege"  "We  Shall  Destroy"  and  "Warriors  Of  The  North".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Obscurity Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

Well, the new album “Obscurity” hit stores now half a year ago and so we have some busy times at the moment. The hard work creating the album gives away to the fun part in terms of going out on the roads for live-activities, having interviews and all that stuff. Especially our very successful European tour in October/November 2012 with Kampfar, Helrunar and Velnias was a big blast. We just came back from a festival gig (Ragnarök 2013) in Germany which was as exciting as it can be. We pick out concerts and festivals very carefully just to be able to provide fans the best shows we can offer. Meaning things are going pretty well for us and we are looking forward to the things coming in the future.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new album and how it differs from previous releases?

Well, we already said even in the very early days (15 years ago), we play Battle Metal. That´s exactly the style of the new album “Obscurity”. One can say it´s a mix of Death/Black/Viking Metal with pagan and martial lyrics. The music doesn´t differ that much from the previous two albums. Of course we have some shifts, but you always get a true Obscurity album when you buy one. We always try to put in new elements, speaking of lyrical style and so on. It´s a good mix of our very own music style with fresh, new elements and great sound. We remain true to our sound and push it forward to a higher level. Nevertheless the album got some originals to offer. If you need some good Battle Metal to get you a kick in the butt or that gives you the power to kick butts, well, then Obscurity is the first choice, hehe.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new release?

As we try to tell tales with our lyrics rather than put just some catchy phrases together, you will learn some things about the Christian church as an institution (In nomine patris), you´ll get a sing-along anthem called “Obscurity” (yeah, after fifteen years we dared to sing about ourselves and our army of fans). There´s a tale about the ancient germans and their path (Germanenblut), you can listen to the fearless warscream of some northmen which will invade your shores with their longships (Strandhogg).  Another song is about a warrior who walks the path of life alone, fights against the struggles life can offer, it is also an homage to Quorthon, the Bathory mastermind (Ensamvarg). You can dive into the times of the four eschatological disasters which are the prelude to the doom of the gods in northern mythology (Blutmondzeit, Jörmungandr, Weltenbrand and Fimbulwinter). These four songs are a mini-concept and if you are into the northern mythology you will like it. Then again we have a true sing-along anthem, a martial no-retreat-order/death-or-glory march (Kein Rückzug). The last song comes as a surprise since it features softer, darker sounds, yet without lacking heaviness and gloomas. It deals with a warrior´s final journey to Valhalla (So endet meine Zeit).

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?

One cannot really put us into a very special or even single metal genre like just Black Metal or just Death Metal or just Thrash Metal or just Pagan Metal and so forth. We offer our very own style with a lot of different genre elements. We never intended to stick just to one genre because all members of Obscurity have their own favorites and tastes and we thought that would be too boring to us and the listeners. We believe in that right on from the beginning and as our music is not precisely definable but rather a bit of twilight between a couple of genres, we have chosen the name Obscurity. And now fifteen years later, things attested that we were right so many years ago.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

We had quite a bunch of shows which are unforgettable experiences to us. I just want to name a few here. At the Ultima Ratio festival in 2008 we had the first slot to play at 12.00 am which isn´t always a good slot but at that day over 3.500 fans screamed out loud for us for about 15 minutes before we entered the stage. I still have a video with the sound of the audience. All three Ragnarök festival shows are very special. In 2010 and 2013 we set up shows with pyrotechnics and such stuff. We almost set the whole Ragnarök festival on fire… but the audience went totally crazy and that released incredible power to us on stage. In 2010 we entered the stage at around 2:30 in the night. Normally there are only few people still in front of the stage but at that day it seemed that almost everyone was waiting for us. So what followed was a very, very intense party for us and the fans. Furthermore is our European Tour in 2013 a memorable experience in our lives.  It is really a tour to remember.

We are very lucky to have some special shows and encounters during our career and we are grateful for those experiences we will never forget. We have to thank our fans for having such blasts again and again. Thank you wherever you are, guys!

6. Do you have any touring plans for the future?

We have scheduled some selected festivals and headliner-shows for 2013 but another tour so quick after the one in 2012 isn´t planned yet. Of course we are talking about a tour and have some stuff in mind but it´s nothing settled yet.

7. Currently the band is signed to TrollZorn Records, how did you get in contact with this label and how would you describe the support they have given you so far?

In 2007 we considered if we want to continue our work with Massacre Records. The Massacre guys did a good job for us but we felt that we maybe will have to move in a different direction. At that time we met Kai and Stefan from Trollzorn at a festival. They had a merchandise booth there (they have also a mailorder site) and saw our performance. After the show they came to us and wanted a couple of shirts and such stuff for their mailorder business. We kept in touch and a couple of months and conversations later they asked if we were interested in working them. That´s one of the famous lucky incidents you need in life. We became partners in crime, friends and have a successful and pleasant cooperation since those days.

They always supported us very bravely. We don´t have any restrictions and can do whatever we want, because TrollZorn knows that we always give the best and same goes for them.

8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to the new album by fans of Viking Metal?

So far we got a lot of excellent reviews and recognition from both the magazines and fans from around the world. It still astonishes us, as we never thought that a band with German lyrics would even hit the attention of people from Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Ghana for example. Ok, there´s Rammstein with German lyrics but we aren´t Rammstein, hehe. Anyways, again we can be grateful to have dedicated supporters all around the world. This is extremely exciting and we wish to visit all those guys with a cool live-performance. Unfortunately that is not possible.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

Hmmm, in the same direction as it´s heading since a couple of years now. We don´t have to change things radically just for the sake of seeming progressive. We like the music and the way we create our stuff. We still have great fun on our path and people enjoy our work more and more. There´s no need of big changes. Of course we wanna have evolution or better improvement to our music, as we add different new elements to our sound, music and lyrics, but I think if you will buy an Obscurity album in the future, you will always know what you get. Pure Obscurity! Iron Maiden doesn´t invent themselves for over twenty years now. If you buy their albums you may be disappointed until a certain point but you must admit it´s still Iron Maiden. Yeah, yeah, I know we aren´t Iron Maiden and I don´t really want to compare us with those heroes of Heavy Metal, but the principle is the same.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Actually we never had any strong ideals which influenced our music. We are five guys with different metal styles. There are intersections in tastes, but those really didn´t find their way into our music. Let´s say there are some bands which we adore and we try to bring the same power on stage like them.

There are a couple of bands which are still prominent in our music systems. Bands like Unleashed, Dismember, Hypocrisy, Anthrax, Maiden, Slayer, Primordial, Enslaved, Bathory, Immortal and so on. We are a bit older now and we definitely listen to new bands, as well, but we are kind of old-school buddies.

11. How would you describe your views on Paganism?

Ahh, that´s a hard question because it´s always hard to give a proper answer which covers this vast topic. It is not only about being dismissive against the Christian church or other religions and to wear kiddy T-shirts with the print “Odin not Jesus”. If you have troubles with world religions, that´s ok for me, as long as you respect people with different cultures and religious background. None can prove you are right and blame you for that, but you can´t prove it either. You need to have a strong faith in yourself and your way to interact socially with other persons. All the rest about old gods, the old mythologies and so on are well-known and I think you don´t need me to explain that for the seemed like hundred´s time.

12. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

Some of us are very deep into history, like myself. We are very busy with our jobs, our families and kids, we watch a lot of movies, travelling around to learn more of foreign cultures and people, I love Star Wars and the rest of us loves beer. That´s it, hehe!

13. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

Thank you for having Obscurity on this interview. It´s an honor and I hope we can arrange a live show anytime in your neighborhood, hehe. I hope the readers didn´t fell asleep already and you enjoyed the interview as much as I did.
Remain true to yourself and Metal on!
Thanks a lot!

Valfreya Interview

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?
Valfreya is a viking metal band with folk/black metal influences that was created in 2009. The music is inspired from Nordic mythology and it brings the listeners into a fantastic tale.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?
Valfreya plays aggressive music with glorious riffs that is completed into a symphonic ensemble with the use of keyboards.
3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
The lyrics tell the story from beginning to end on  the album path to eternity.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
Nordic mythology is the number one inspiration for the band. We have created a story inspired of their multiple worlds, creatures and gods.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
The album launch of Path to Eternity was the best show we played. We had transformed the entire venue to create the ambiance of a medieval tavern. A lot of costumed people were at the event, including the staff.
Here you can see some pictures:
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150585402274487&set=a.10150486065444487.384794.143393999486&type=3

Main album page: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150486065444487.384794.143393999486&type=3

As for our stage performance, we like to bring a lot of energy as well as a theatrical act into our show. We're always costumed and we wish to bring the public into the ambiance of the tale that is presented throughout our music.

6. Do you have any touring plans for the new release?
We have quite a few shows all over the province of Québec and we are planning a tour in the western provinces of Canada. We also wish to travel Europe but there are no dates confirmed for this possible project.
7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of pagan and folk metal?
Very positive! The fans of Pagan - Folk - Viking metal seem to find our sound refreshing. We have successfully created a musical sound that is new within a genre that is already very exploited. We also bring out a special touch with our theatrical act throughout shows.
8. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
We already started the work on our next album. We are keeping the same Viking Metal inspiration but we will also bring out a new feel. I won't say more!
9. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
All of the members of the band have their own influences, but when it comes to me I would say:
Wintersun: For the vocals and intensity of the songs.
Equilibrium: For the festive side.
Arkona: When it comes to the folk feel.
Dimmu Borgir: For the darker and more black metal influenced parts of the album.
Rhapsody: With Keyboards and symphonies.

10. How would you describe your views on Norse Paganism?
We're not really implicated with Norse paganism.
Our music is simply inspired by Nordic mythology.
11. Outside of music what are some of your interests?
It's hard to mention our interests outside of music.
We like to see shows when we're not playing them. I'd say it is most likely going around anything involving arts and creativity.

12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
I would suggest everyone to keep themselves updated through our facebook / reverbnation or even twitter.
All of our shows are announced and we have some upcoming surprises!!

Valfreya/Path To Eternity/Maple Metal Records/2012 CD Review

Valfreya  are  a  band  from  Montreal,  Canada  that  plays  a  very  melodic  and  symphonic  form  of  folk/viking  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  album  "Path  To  Eternity"  which  was  released  by Maple  Metal  Records.

Drums  range  from  slow  to mid  paced  drumming  with  some  fast  playing  and  blast  beats,  while  the  keyboards  bring  a  very  epic,  atmospheric,  and  symphonic  sound  to  the  music  while  the  folk  instruments  bring  a  very  medieval  pagan  sound  to  the  music,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  is  coming  out  of  the  guitars  and  at  times  they  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  riffs  that  combine  the more  melodic  forms  of  black  and  death  metal  together  in  a  more  viking  direction  as  well  as  a  good  amount  of  influences  from  traditional  metal  and  folk  music,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  melodic  sounding  guitar  solos  and  leads,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  they  use  finger  picking  and  full  chords  to  bring  more  folk  elements  to  the  music.

Vocals  range  from  clean  female  singing  to high  pitched  blackened  death  screams  and  growls,  spoken  word  parts  as  well  as  some  clean  singing  male  viking  metal  chanting,  while  the  lyrics  cover  Norse  Mythology,  as  for  the production  it has  a  very  strong,  powerful  and  heavy  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.

In  my  opinion Valfreya  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  and  symphonic  folk  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  style,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Inferno"  "Ocean's  Assault"  "Alefest"  and  "My  Everlasting  Star".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Amon Amarth/Surtur Rising/Metal Blade Records/2011 CD Review

Amon Amarth are a band from Sweden that has a very long history and are one of the best known Viking melodic black/death metal bands and this is a review of their 2011 album "Surtur Rising" which was released by metal Blade Records.

Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast playing with a good amount of blast beats, while the bass playing sounds very powerful and heavy at times and serves as a perfect background for the rhythm guitars, as for the synths that are only used on the last song, they bring a very symphonic and tragic feel to the music.

.

Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast riffs that combine death, black and traditional metal together with a great amount of melodies being added in, while the lead guitars are very melodic sounding traditional metal guitar solos that utilize a lot of skill and talent, as for the the acoustic guitars when they are utilized briefly, they bring a very dark medieval feel to the music.

Vocals are a mixture of high pitched black metal screams and deep death metal growls, while the lyrics touch on Norse Paganism and Mythology, as for the production it has a very heavy and professional sound to it with all of the musical instruments coming out sounding great.

In my opinion this is another great album from Amon Amarth and if you where a fan of their previous releases, you will not be disappointed. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "War Of The Gods" "Destroyer Of The Universe" "Wrath Of The Norseman" and "Doom Over Dead Man". RECOMMENDED BUY.

Wolfchant Interview

> 1. Can you update us with what is going on with the band these days?

Nortwin: Actually we are doing fine, as the new album is released now and most of the reviews are are received and very positive.
We are very proud of C.O.T.B.W. as it worked out to be exactly what we imagined when we wrote the album.

> 2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new album and how
> does it differ from previous releases?

Nortwin: Being quite new in the band gives me an interesting view on the whole thing. If you follow all the releases up to now you'll find a clear path that leads to our actual one. All of these albums really sound like Wolfchant but each one creates a different atmosphere which was right for the time when the albums were written. Anyway, the sound as well as the songwriting developed over the years, and of course the fact of having two different style singers now in the band creates lots of new excitement and new ground to explore for us and for the listeners.

> 3. What are some of the lyric topics and subjects that the new releases
> explores?

Nortwin: There is on one hand a strong emphasis on the forces of nature especially in "Naturgewalt" and in the title track "Call Of The Black Winds". On the other hand there are topics related to paganism and for example the relegious persecution that happened in the past ages to heathen tribes: "Black Fire", "Heathen Rise"
The title "Eremit" is about freedom, self choosen solitude and being in accord with nature."The Last Farewell" is about the loss of beloved persons. Among these topics there are of couse also songs which are standing for the typical pagan metal values like honour, victory, unity and fighting spirit.

> 4. You have written songs in both German and English, which language do
> you prefer to write in?

Nortwin: It's kind of a natural process within Wolfchant to write in the language which fits best to the emotions and messages that are carried with the different songs . Some things can be simply delivered better in the native tongue, others sound better in english. It also happens that both languages are used in one song when it feels right, for example in "Stormwolves".

> 5. The new album has a strong sound, where you satisfied with the
> production?

Nortwin: Yes. we were sure from the beginning that the sound will not disappoint us. It's simply a question of having the possibility to work with the right studio and the right producer. Well the result is great in our opinion, no doubt.

> 6. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?

Lokhi: We live dirctly in the national park area of bavaria. And the wolves reserve of the park is
very clos to our place. So in the summer time if we made campfires this time, it was possible to hear the screams of the wolves.
So we made the decision to give us the name WOLFCHANT

> 7. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far, and
> how would you describe your stage performance?

Lokhi: We have a very powerful and strong stage performance. Always in dxirect contact with the audience... We
always want to make a big Party if we are on stage. We always give the best we can. Some of the best Shows was the Ragnarök Festival Shows
und the Summer Night Festival Shows in the last years.

> 8. On a worldwide level how has your music been received by
> pagan/viking/black and melodic death metal fans worldwide?

Lokhi. We got more and more fans over the last years. From album to album the fanbase in the different countries was growing a lot and we
are very happy about this situation. It is an unbelievable good feeling if you can find people around the world listening to your music.
As we started WOLFCHANt nobody thought that is it possible that we got such a huge feedback from People all over the world.

> 9. What are the touring plans for the new releases?

Lokhi: We play a lot of Festivals in Germany and different other countries. In November we make an Tour over Europe and in the beginning of 2012 we make
some Shows in the US.... So i thing we will not be bored in the next time.

> 10. What direction do you see the music heading into on future releases?

Nortwin: We will continue our advanced way as started with COTBW. There are so many things to try and to explore that is very inspiring for the future songwriting. Especially from the vocal side up to now we just scratched all the possibilities which we can have now.

> 11. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your
> music, and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Nortwin: It's difficult to speak for everybody in the band, but we are surly influenced by a broad range of musical styles, or better said metal styles. Some of them are surly black, pagan, power and death metal. It's difficult to name bands here, as there are too many of them. Representative I would say Mithotyn, Dimmu Borgir.

> 12. What role does Viking and Norse Paganism play in your music, and how
> would you describe your views on these topics?

Nortwin: Of course these topics are providing a big part of the inspiration for our music and our lyrics. For me personally paganism is not standing for the believe in some viking gods, but for the ultimate freedom of faith and thinking. A religious belief in a known and experienced way is only limiting these highest values.

> 13. Outside of music, what are some of your interests?

Nortwin: For me it is mainly fitness training, movies and travelling.

> 14. Any final words or thoughts, before we wrap up this interview?

Nortwin: Thank you for the interview. To all the people out there: "Call Of The Black Winds" is in the stores now. Please give it a try and watch out for our coming live shows. Check out our myspace page for actual information. Cheers & Skol

Wolfchant/Call Of The Black Winds/Massacre Records/2011 CD Review

Wolfchant are a band from Germany with a music style that I would describe as being pagan/viking/folk/black metal with a melodic and symphonic edge and this is a review of their 2011 album "call Of The Black Winds" which was released by Massacre Records.

Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with some blast beats, while the keyboards are very symphonic and epic sounding with some occasional folk music instruments that give the music a medieval pagan feel, as for the bass playing it has a very dark tone which is mixed down low in the mix and seems to follow the riffs that are coming out of the guitars and at times they sound very powerful.

Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast melodic black metal style riffs with some influences from traditional and death metal, while the lead guitars are very melodic sounding guitar solos that have a classic and traditional metal feel to them as for the acoustic guitars when they are utilized they use full chords to give the music a tragic feel.

Vocals are a mixture of high pitched black metal screams, clean singing viking vocals that have a power metal feel at times and some  deep death metal growls, while the lyrics cover Nordic Mythology, Paganism, and Anti-Christianity with some of the songs being written in the German language, as for the production it has a very powerful and heavy sound to it.

In my opinion Wolfchant are a very good viking/pagan/folk/melodic black metal band and if you are a fan of this genre, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Stormwolves" "Black Fire" "Heathen Rise" and "Call Of The Black Winds". RECOMMENDED BUY.
