Nordic Frost/Ov Blasphemy And Other Rites/Rebel Pyro Musick/2019 Full Length Review

Nordic  Frost  are  a  solo  project  from  Sacramento,  California  that  plays  a  symphonic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2019  album  "Ov  Blasphemy  And  Other  Rites"  which  was  released  by  Rebel  Pyro  Musick.

Tragic  sounding  keyboards  and  symphonic  elements  start  of  the  album  and  they  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music.  During  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  long  and  epic  in  length.

Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  the  music  also  mixing  in  elements  of  death  metal  at  times.

A  lot  of the  music  also  brings  in  influences  from  the  mid 90's  era  of  symphonic  black  metal  but  also  keeps  a  modern  atmosphere  at  the  same  time. As  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of   clean  singing  and  chanting  can  be  heard  as  well  as  a  alter  track  being  an  instrumental,  classical  guitars  are  also  added  onto  the  closing  track  and  their  is  also  a  hideen  bonus  version  of  Led  Zeppelin's  "Immigrant  Song".  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  witchcraft  from  the  middle  ages.

In  my  opinion  Nordic  Frost  are  a  very  great  sounding  symphonic  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Compelled  By  Witchcraft"  "Despondent  Legions  Ov  The  Dead"  and  "Penance  Ov  Sodom".  8  out  of  10.

Lemuria Interview

Answers provided by: Vincent, Jeroen

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?
Vincent: Well for the moment we are really busy promoting the release of the album. We recorded a video clip and some other stuff that will be published soon. We're planning a release party on the 15th of February, and we also designed our brand new 'The Hysterical Hunt' merchandise; at least our very talented guitar player Jeroen did, based on the artwork of Kris Verwimp! So pretty hectic times for us.
But a few months ago, we started working with the management & promotion company SHDW Collective, which is really a big help and support for us. With their experience and their connections, they are a real boost for the band.

2.In 2019 you have a new album coming out, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
Vincent: I think what can musically describe 'The Hysterical Hunt' the most, is that it is a group effort. 'Chanson de La Croisade' was mainly written on keyboard and the guitars were added later. With our new record we really wanted to write it together, we even locked ourselves up for a couple of days in a small cabin in the woods. We ended up with a lot of ideas and some blueprints of songs.
In general, I think The Hysterical Hunt has more black metal influences in it and also the underlying tone is a lot darker, a lot spookier to fit the story.
Gaël: Overall, I think the new album has a more mature sound than the previous ones. It is complex but also accessible. The intricacies of the songs and melodies don’t stand in the way of the listening experience, and that is an achievement in my opinion.

3.The lyrics on the new recording are a concept album, can you tell us a little bit more about the subject you have covered with the newer material?
Vincent: The story is that of "the Beast of Gévaudan", which took place in that southern region of France in the summer of 1764. In a span of only two or three years, more than one hundred children and women were viciously attacked and killed by an unknown animal. The people there were accustomed to the harsh and wild environments and also knew the local wildlife very well. So the fact that witnesses told the officials that they saw an animal or beast they had never seen before, spread a nation-wide terror. People blamed various culprits, from savage mutated dogs or escaped African predators to a werewolf, witchcraft or the devil himself.
The story that we tell is entirely based on historical facts, but of course we added some fiction and drama. We follow a private investigator who looks into the mysterious disappearance of six persons, using newspaper articles, letters and diary excerpts; with a dark and heart-breaking outcome.

4.Previous albums lyrically covered the viking invasion of Flanders and the persecution of the Cathars by Catholics, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in historical topics?
Vincent: Regarding the lyrical material for the band, I just like the fact that we can use stories that are epic, heroic, tragic and horrific but also historic; the fact that it actually took place sometime long ago. When I read about the war on the Cathars for instance, it was really confronting for me. We learn everything about the crusades in high school, but few people know that the horrors of these times actually struck the center of Europe itself. So combining an interesting story with a forgotten part of Europe's history makes it all a little more worthwhile. And the same goes for The Hysterical Hunt of course.

5.The band was split up for a few years, what was the decision behind reforming?
Vincent: Lemuria split up in 2006 if I'm not mistaken. There were some musical differences regarding the future of the band so we decided to call it (a) quits. But I and our keyboard player Siegfried kept on writing new material that was so much in the style of Lemuria that we and some other members decided to restart the band.
Gaël: This was before my time in the band. Lemuria had already quite a reputation in the Belgian underground, and when they decided to reform people were very curious about the music and the new line-up and such. A few years later, they approached me with the question if I wanted to record a ‘guest’ solo on the new album. I was very much impressed by the raw edits of ‘Chanson’, so they didn’t need to ask twice!

6.I know that the band was named after a lost continent that sink into the Pacific Ocean, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in lost continents?
Vincent: Well, there isn't really an interest in lost continents. I mean, I for myself am intrigued by the tale of the old island of Atlantis as told by Plato. The fact that there could have been an antediluvian civilization that was far more advanced than we would expect for that time period, is of course something that triggers the mind. But we chose the band name Lemuria not for its mythic or esoteric meaning, but rather for the mysterious sound to it. You can't define or specify the genre by that name, and that is just the same for our music. To describe Lemuria's style, symphonic black metal is only the common demeanor, but there are so much more influences to be found.

7.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?
Jeroen: The artwork was painted by the well-known artist Kris Verwimp, who did album covers for numerous metal bands. He did an absolutely awesome job. The cover artwork perfectly captures the mysterious atmosphere of the concept story of the album. It shows hunters wandering in the dark woods, searching for the legendary beast of Gévaudan. We provided Kris with some rough artwork mock-ups and drawings to explain him what we wanted it to look like, and he far exceeded our expectations. I love all the little details in it like tree branches, leaves, mist, the skull, etc. Also, the level of depth and perspective is astonishing.
Vincent: We've been working with Kris since ‘Tales, Ale & Fire’ and his paintings always captured the mood of our music so well. But what I remember the most is that he described our music in the time of 'Tales, Ale & Fire' as Thyrfing with a melancholic touch to it. And that was so spot on! He was the first to acknowledge the amount of melancholy in our music, and that is indeed a recurring theme in our music and lyrics: death, loss, war, intolerance, but also friendship, love and heroism.

8.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Vincent: For me the most memorable was our performance at the Graspop Metal Meeting in 2012. We played for a couple of thousand enthusiastic people so that's not something you easily forget.
Jeroen: The most awesome shows I remember were on our mini-tour in the Czech Republic, together with Welicoruss, Valkenrag and Daedric Tales. Czech metalfans are really enthusiastic. If you get such an energetic response from the audience, you can really give it all.
Gaël: I have to concur with Vincent on this one, the GMM show was awesome.

9.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?
Jeroen: We’ll present the new album live on the album release show on the 15th of February, in JH Vizit (Wilrijk). We invited Furia, Vanaheim and Innervate to join us on stage. We are really looking forward to finally play the new songs live. For the rest of 2019, naturally, we hope to crush many more stages. We are available for gigs worldwide, just contact our booker at Pieter@shdwcollective.be

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of symphonic black metal?
Jeroen: Really good! That is, judging from the reviews appearing in many different languages. We also received cd and t-shirt orders from all over the world: Japan, Canada, USA, Italy, Cyprus, Ukraine, Slovenia, France, … We are pleased to see that Lemuria is not limited to Belgium alone.
Vincent: Of course, we hope that our signing with Massacre Records and working with our management bureau SHDW Collective will make our band more prolific globally. Before this album we did everything by ourselves, so the promotion took a lot of effort. Now, with so much professional people backing us up, we have more time to concentrate on the music, which is a very good thing, I think.

11.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?
Jeroen: I have a raw black metal side project called Calmetholt. The recordings of the next album are nearly finished. Since Lemuria took most of our time and energy this year, Calmetholt had to wait. But rest assured, the new material will be released for sure. Aside from Calmetholt, I’m also doing vocals for the black metal band Catharsis Fatalis, which released its self-titled debut EP last year. I’ll be recording vocals for the next album soon, so there’s more than enough to keep busy. There can never be enough music!
Vincent: Next to Lemuria, I keep myself busy with writing some instrumental and orchestral stuff. Mostly just for fun and study, but there are some vague plans of performing some of my music with a symphonic orchestra.

12.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Vincent: That's a bit of a difficult question. We'll always keep on developing musically because with each new concept story our music has to adapt. With ‘The Hysterical Hunt’ we wrote a lot more dark and horror influenced melodies. But I think in the near future you don't have to expect major changes. We are very aware of the music we like and we will keep on writing the music we like. But of course, you never know...
Gaël: The band is in a good spot, creatively, and the different influences of the musicians synergize quite well. I can’t say how the music will sound, but I know in the future I want to use the same way of writing music as we did for The Hysterical Hunt.

13.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and what are you listening to nowadays?
Vincent: I learned to appreciate metal with bands varying from Iron Maiden, Metallica and Sepultura to Cradle Of Filth, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Death, Immortal and so on and so on. I can't give you a list of my influences because it would be too long; for I also like other genres like prog-rock, AOR, New Wave etc. If it's good music that touches a part of my soul, no matter the genre, I will like it. But on the other hand, one genre that has had a major influence on myself and on my part in Lemuria's history is film music. 25 years ago I fell in love with John Williams and the magic he did with Jurassic Park, and from then on I discovered a world of extremely talented musicians as Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard, Alan Silvestri, Jerry Goldsmith and Danny Elfman.
Jeroen: Personally, I’m mainly into raw and fast black metal. Bands I enjoyed a lot recently are Uada, Forteresse and Macabre Omen. I’m also a huge fan of underground Belgian black metal such as Aguynguerran, Gotmoor and Huldrefolk. Make sure to check them out! In Lemuria, the musical preferences differ quite a bit between the musicians, which is also reflected in our songwriting. You may think this would lead to conflicts, but it is quite the contrary. Our different styles blend beautifully, which is one of the strengths of our new album I believe. On ‘The Hysterical Hunt’, the atmosphere continuously varies from dark and evil to heroic, melancholic and back. This results in a very dynamic and diverse album.

14.What are some of your non musical interests?
Jeroen: As most metal fans, I have a higher than average interest in horror movies. Aside from that, I enjoy creating artwork and video editing, which comes in really handy if you’re in a band.
Vincent: One of my other interests is reading, both fiction and non-fiction, including authors as Michael Crichton, Stephen King, Preston & Child, Richard Dawkings, Graham Hancock, Friedrich Nietzsche, etc.
Gaël: I’m into gaming, both table top games and video games.

15.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Vincent: No matter the band, if you like the music, then buy the music and visit the gigs. Not only the big ones but the smaller too. It is the only way we can survive and raise the money to write and record more music!

ShadowThrone Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

After album’s recording we started to search a new label for Elements’ Blackest Legacy .
We produced previously album Demiurge Of Shadow on nipponic Hidden Marly Prod / Zero Dimensional Records that was good for old album but now we needed for an european label . Sent promo album to a lot of labels but dutch Non Serviam Records answered us so fast and with so much interest for it  . This is great cause Non Serviam Records listened the full album and believed in our work . We knew it by occult metal band Darkend and Nazghor that personally I love . Signed for NSR and planned work and promotion . At moment we’re reading reviews and they are all excellent , working for live events and a new single composed by a cover song but prefer don’t say nothing before it come out .

2.Recently you have released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Demiurge Of Shadow is our first full album with a different line-up and we were searching a sound .Past sound was very inspired by symphonic black metal albums like In The Nightside Eclipse by Emperor or Spiritual Black Dimension by Dimmu Borgir . Was my first work after ten years inside Theatres Des Vampires line-up so I wanted to get away from gothic scene and return to style close to me . Started with simple riffs and classic orchestral sound . After first album we started to write new material more heavy and less inspired , cutting orchestral sound and introducing sidereal and synth keyboards for a more cold and cosmic dimensions . It’s an album with different line-up and different attitude than years ago .

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

At beginning was very simple to fall into lyrics about norse mitology cause now is trendy but I wanted music more close to cold and dark dimension like arctic sky during the night . Exploring a frozen peak under black stars and cold steel where there is no life , no gods but only disturbing silence . Elements’ Blackest Legacy is not a concept album but try to open the door on this dimensions through its atmospheric music and lyrics . Zilath’s lyrics
try to describe these sensations of darkness and crystallizing moons .

4.Some of your lyrics also touch on Satanism, Occult and Anti Christina themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?

I think Satanism and Christianity is the same product generated in the name of mass control. Christianity and Church used devil icons to subject people and lands for their dirty purposes replacing the old pagan traditions but a great part of men were fascinated by evil icons cause
undoubtedly witchcraft and demons are more charming than angels and holy life . They are part of darkside of our mind and I’m interested to exploring any darkside . Generally we use word occult for something that we don’t understand or have explanation and we see a sinister side but how many phenomena of nature we can see and can’t understand? Part of men try to understand through dark arts or spiritual sensations .

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'ShadowThrone'?

It’s simple remind to Satyricon’s album The Shadowthrone . Probably for a little part that’s right but at beginning was imagining a throne into a cave inside a black mountain like in Lord Of The Rings book and decided for this name .

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Elements’ Blackest Legacy artwork realized by occult artist Nestor Avalos that worked for Dark Funeral , Moonspell , Rotting Christ… It represents the pure elements of the earth like ice , fire , air and water . If you start from down to up you can see the colors change from red like fire to white/blu like ice with a flow of energy on mountain of skulls .

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We done good shows last years to promote Demiurge Of Shadow . I don’t remember if there is a best show cause every show was different and different feelings . Toured with Absu , Rotting Christ , Arcturus … and honored to play in front their crowd . Our show is a simple show with dark lights  and smoke without a theatrical performance . We like to go up on stage and play our songs so people can listen our music without show distractions . I think we play like a classical heavy metal band J

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

At moment we are guest at Ade’s Rise Of Empire released party on November 29th and confirmed at Black Winter Fest XII with Hellhammer , 1349 , Kampfar and other bands .on November 30th . We’re planning gigs and show for 2020 so we need to wait answers .

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your newer music by fans of symphonic black metal?

Great ! Reviews are excellent and every day new fans follow the band page . Rates under the singles Path Of Decay and Black Dove Upon My Shoulder are good cause this is not like usually symphonic black metal inspired by Cradle Of Filth or Dimmu Borgir . We pushed inside new album our influences from old black metal to death metal passing for soundtrack and avantgarde atmosphere .

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Francesco and Davide have their projects inside other bands like Deceptionist or Brvmak but I don’t know their upcoming events for these bands . Zilath was the singer of Etruscan black metal band called Voltumna and at moment he’s the Shadowthrone’s singer . About me I ‘ve an upcoming old black metal side-project  involved with members of two Italian black metal bands but prefer to talk about this when album will be complete .

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I don’t know . I like to write new material everytime and now I’m writing new tracks .
Life can change in every moment .

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I started to listen heavy metal when I went at school , very young , buying Ozzy Osbourne’s Speak Of The Devil vinyl cause the artwork was amazing . From there I started to listen the rest like Iron Maiden , Motley Crue , Metallica , King Diamond / Mercyful Fate but during 90’ I was reading about Bathory , Emperor , Mayhem , Darkthrone buying paper zines and ordering albums by mailorder (have original first press) . I think all these bands and many others inspired me for the rest of my musical life and part of style life . Listen metal music everyday finding new actually bands.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thanks to A Different Shade Of Black Metal zine from ShadowThrone for interview and invite the reader to listen our old and new album following our page

Immanifest Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
1. Immanifest technically began conceptually in December of 06. Asgrim had I (Anton) had both been session members in a band (keyboards for Royal Anguish) and we grew to admire
each other's work. Asgrim was the mastermind of a band I basically worshiped in my teens known as Yeti. In 2006 I was working at Sam Ash Music and I remember listening to the
Revelations in Darkness demo in Asgrim’s truck and feeling inspired to start a band. From there we wrote 5 songs and named the band Immanifest in 08.

2.In November, you have your first full length coming out, musically how does it differ from the ep you had released in 2010?
2. Macrobial features some music that was originally supposed to appear on the Qliphotic EP and also tracks written afterwards. I'd say each song has its own identity. None of us would
consider the album any particular style other than Extreme Metal – an amalgamation of many different styles. Perhaps we just took some elements that we had began to experiment with
on Qliphotic even further this time around. We don’t rely on technique as a means to an end,but rather employ techniques in expressing the songs.

3.This is also your first release in 9 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?
3. Hiatus. Non – band related.

4.In the press release you mentioned that the lyrics are inspired by the works of Michael Tsarion whoe in turn is infleunced by the works of John Dee, can you tell us a little bit more about the songwrting that is presented on the new album?
4. Tsarion is most certainly a major influence. Basically, he describes how a 16 th century black magician Dr. John Dee (Mathematician, astronomer and council to Queen Elizabeth I)
established ritual contact with extra-dimensional beings. It’s a classic demonic evocation ritual story but gives it a ‘scientific’ depth when the nature of such entities are explored. Tsarion
called them “Macrobes”. Thus Macrobial is an exploration of this theme- a deal with devils –exchanging blood for power and knowledge. Some tracks, lyrically, explore the theme of
Global Wars acting as strategically planned mass blood rituals – the pain and horror released into the ether, siphoned off by Macrobial parasites.

5.Your also go into the concepts of ultraterrestial's and astral travel, can you tellus a little bit more about your interest in the paranormal and metaphysical topics?
5. The term Ultraterrestrial denotes the concept of a divergent timeline – for the concept of free will to be ultimately true, all possibilities of every infinite divergent timeline (or worldline)
must exist somehow in the universe – perhaps enfolded, and then unfolded when navigated or chosen. For a sci-fi example- Dinosaur-Humanoids evolving out of the Mesozoic era,
developing advanced space and time displacement technology and then exploring our timeline. We would meet as Ultraterrestrials.

In regards to Metaphysics, there is much that can be said of our interest in such a topic, but to quote the father of atomic theory Max Planck “I regard matter as derivative from
consciousness.” The key to connecting it all- the one thing that makes up the majority of the universe and even the atom – space. Within the seemingly empty space that constitutes the
fabric of existence might lay a multitude of dimensional realities.

6.Some of your other lyrics mention Nifelheim, Egypt and Jahbulon, a name that is mentioned in Freemasonry, how did you get interested in the various forms of occultism?
6. Interest in occultism was sparked by David Ickes work in the late 90s, specifically “The Biggest Secret”, and from there Jordan Maxwell whom took inspiration from his connection to
Manly P. Hall (writer of The Secret Teachings of All Ages). The term ‘Occult’ means hidden or obscured – and largely in my experience there is much to history and reality that is obscured
either purposely perpetuated by oligarchies or naturally lost to time. A burning desire to understand reality and existence therefor necessitates a study of the occult.

7.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Immanifest'?
7. The inspiration for our band name comes from Dr. David R. Hawkin’s work entitled ‘The Eye of the I’. Described as the “Unmanifest” formless ground of being in which all of dualistic
reality arises from.

8.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?
8. The cover art for Macrobial is a nightmarish re-envisioning of the 6th Tarot Card – the Lovers. This card denotes many things, including the bond between flesh and lust – but also
of life, union and spirituality. Our interpretation is an inversion of that – what we feel represents the world more accurately in the age of Kali Yuga – the suns elliptical journey
furthest from galactic center – the galactic winter.

9.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
9. The most memorable shows were probably opening for Tyr and Korpiklani in Tampa and then in Ft. Lauderdale with Kult ov Azazel. The crowds were extremely enthusiastic and
supportive. We are a six piece so I think the size of the band brought a bigger presence – not to mention our front man Eric carries with him an ominous and foreboding vibe. We have not
yet performed with our second vocalist but we think that would bring things to the next level, for sure.

10.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?
10. No plans currently – but not ruling anything out.

11.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black, death and symphonic metal?
11. Any fan of extreme music is a friend of ours. We’ve made friends/listeners from Canada to Europe to South America to Malaysia. We all speak different languages but the music bonds
us. We flirt with different styles of metal but Symphonic Black/Death Metal is what we do – we feel like there are less rules there – which is critical in breaking limitations and exploring
creatively. Fans of that style tend to be cognizant of this, and we dig that.

12.What is going on with 'Shadow Society' these days, a band that shares a lot of the same members?

12. Shadow Society releases a new EP next year and will follow that up with live shows.
They are working on some cool multimedia content as well – 2020 definitely their year.

13.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

12. Shadow Society releases a new EP next year and will follow that up with live shows.

14.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
14. We are lovers of Metal in general – so many amazing bands from our home state and abroad. Without beating a dead horse – obvious influences are Late 90s/Early 00’s Cradle of
Filth and Dimmu Borgir (what we would call their “Nick Barker” era) Old Man’s Child, Dissection, At the Gates, Dark Funeral. Listening to Borknagar’s True North and revisiting my
Naglfar discography currently.

15.What are some of your non musical interests?
15. We are all nature lovers. A lot of boating and water sports here in sunny Florida. The winters are lovely with many forest excursions and bonfires. We also tend to voyage to
Tennessee yearly to experience the Appalachian mountains.

16.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
16. Thank you for the interest and thoughtful questions. Ave atque Vale!

Tragedy In Hope Interview

1. For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

‘Tragedy In Hope’ is a black metal based music project, where a lot of attention is paid to small details in the lyrical and musical elements. For example, you can hear the tiger’s roar on “Smile At Death” single, which is a reference to the “Survivor - Eye Of The Tiger”, or if you are attentive enough, you can figure out the estimated date when events of “Grim Love Story” happened.

2. In November you have a new ep coming out, musically how does it differ from your previous full length and singles?

It is much better produced, a structure of some tracks is more complex and the lyrics contain more little details.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

It’s really complex question, because I structured the lyrics the way they contain the whole world behind almost each phrase. You can take a random quatrain from any song and separately from the lyrics it will mean one thing, with the near quatrain it will mean the second thing and in the context of the whole track itself it will mean the third one.

In short, basically, it’s all about tragedy in hope.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Tragedy In Hope'?

Actually, the name can be understood in very different specter of meanings. Everything depends on how a certain person sees ‘Tragedy In Hope’ and I prefer it to be so. All I can say, for instance, it can be a feeling, a situation, a way of life etc.

As for inspiration, I love running, especially at the evening, when it is already dark outside. Sometimes it feels just sad.  I usually go running, when I feel it. The state of sadness goes to the different level, when you run. It doesn’t really feel sad anymore. I would say, it rather feels like euphoria, but in a quite twisted way. I wanted to find the word or the phrase, which would most closely convey this feeling. Eventually, I came up with ‘Tragedy In Hope’.

There were many factors, which played a huge role in it as well, I chose running just as an example, because ‘Tragedy In Hope’ applies to many situations in our lives.

5. Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new ep cover?

The devil is in the details. This artwork contains a lot of references to the lyrics of the EP. Like, for example, you can see a falling star at the upper-left corner of the artwork. The thing is, it’s not a star, it is Halley's Comet, which is mentioned in the track “Pierce The Heavens”.

“Halley's tail seems so pale

Compare to void inside us,

An ember of joy smolders.”

1. In short, the whole track is a wordplay about space.

2. One of the meaning of ‘Tragedy In Hope’, as I said already, is a twisted feeling of euphoria, when you feel sad and happy simultaneously.

3. An ember of joy is a reference to the whole ‘Tragedy In Hope’ meaning and to the track “Smile at Death”, where hopeless madmen try to save their embers (hopes) after realizing that life isn’t that easy, as it seemed to before.

4. Thus, I mock at Halley's Comet. It is bright, but its brightness incomparably dull when it comes to the darkness inside us. Our sadness is darker than brightness of Halley's Comet itself, in other words. However, in the same time, just slight light of an ember (hope) can be seen in the darkness inside us.

5. WHICH MEANS, our hope, even if it is little, is brighter than any light in the universe.

6. Anyway, we should never forget, tragedy is in hope.

As you can see, it’s just one little detail, but there is a lot behind, and there are many such details, which is just crazy. The EP is just around 12 minutes, but I tried to put the whole world in it.

Also, there is an artwork for each single, which contains such little details as well.

6. Has the band done any live shows or is this strictly a studio project?

It’s a studio project so far, but I don’t exclude a possibility of live shows in the future. Right now, I am alone writing music and lyrics.

7. Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

I am not looking for a label at this point. Cooperation with a label is just unprofitable for both sides right now. I am sure as soon as I and a label have something interesting to suggest to each other, this question will be reviewed.

8. On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of symphonic black metal?

I would say, it has been quite mixed. On the one hand, there were people who really admired my previous work and told me how dramatic and passionate it was. On the other hand, I received comments like “Just some hysterical girl squeals. Nothing interesting in it”. I can understand such hate comments, for I think some people just didn’t get the point I wanted to say. It isn’t about production after all, it’s about the content I put in my songs. Wordplays, mindgames etc.

9. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I am writing something right now, but I don’t want to spoiler anything. All I can say, it will still be black metal based music, but slightly different from the EP.

10. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I would say, there were tracks or rather pieces of tracks, which affected my music style. For example, I am not really into this band, but in teenage years I loved listening to “Gorgoroth – Funeral Procession” 1997 version. I still think it is a great, underestimated track.

Here are last three projects I’ve been listening to recently:

1. Lingua Ignota.

2. Gost.

3. Pryapisme.

11. What are some of your non musical interests?

Nothing can be better for me than a good run, especially at the evening. Plus points if it is the full moon.

12. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Some people say that music is twice as good if it is enjoyable even without words.

I say that lyrics are twice as good if it is enjoyable even without music :)

Nachtterror Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

The members of Nachtterror for the most part have all moved on to other projects or real life stuff as of its completion, so unfortunately not very much.

2.Recently you have released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Much more Majestic,  less about getting the moshpits going and more about thought provoking music. We've grown up from back then. And our story reflects that

3.This is also your first release in 4 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

Members have moved onto different projects, but I (Maelkleth) still remain as the "lorekeeper"/ main songwriter for anything new.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores on the new album and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

Lyrically we strive to be storytellers who delve into the deeper emotions of man. Vengeful rage, bitter sorrow, hateful revenge, and fearfull understanding. As we have grown as people, so too has our understanding of our lives and the trials we've faced and for some, still struggle with every day. These reflect in our songs so others may see themselves in our position and judge themselves accordingly.

5.Some of your earlier lyrics dealt with occult topics, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in Occultism?

We have always been interested in lovecraftian horror, video games and their soundtracks, and Id have to say our interest in Japanese Psychological Horror games was more of an influence than just the occult. Most of us are familiar with Anton LaVey, Crowley, and the Necronomicon. But our biggest influence lyrically has always been Silent Hill.

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Nachtterror'?
The meaning of Nachtterror would to me be, the "Fear of what comes in the Night". At the time it was an attempt to find a foreign language word for Night terror. But over time all things have come full circle and its meaning has evolved to reflect what we aimed to do with our music in the first place.

7.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The cover is representative of the start of a journey through the dark. The three Vatiel figures on the outside are meant to represent Courage, Wisdom and Power, which are virtues to be gained along the path of Judgement.  A figure is seen holding a dying woman, reflective of the story of Walter and his bride. The barren landscape represents the nightmare world which he seemingly resides. A cold forest. The doorway is the path in which he must walk to find enlightenment. The tall mountain in the distance borrowed from tarot cards using the same imagery. Looking at the Tarot for judgement one can usually see archangels blowing trumpets to resurrect the dead. In this way the three Vatiel figures are calling to Walter to become more than the guilt ridden man he has become.

8.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Nachtterror has had the opportunity to play alongside some of the great Canadian Metal acts, as well as festivals throughout our history. From opening for Wolven Ancestry in 2009, to being featured at Black Mourning Light Festival,  not to mention our kinship with bands like Psychotic Gardening and Altars of Grief, among others. The Canadian metal scene and its promoters have always had a passion to support incredible bands, and we have been very fortunate to experience so many.
Our stage performance has always been centered around taking our audience to another place. We have always pushed for immersion and intensity. Whether it be in attire, ligting, or theatrical acting moments built into our live performance, we have always intended to have our live show act as an extension of our lore.

9.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

Unfortunately at this time there are no plans to promote the album, but thats not dismissing any possibilities in the future.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your newer music by fans of black, doom and symphonic metal?

From the little feedback we recieve Id have to say fairly good. Its hard to say when we havent been super active socially as of late.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Depending on interest, another concept album continuing the idea of the souls journey to be reborn anew. Possibly a collection of eps rather than a full length.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Video game music has always been a huge influence, but bands like Cradle of Filth, My Dying Bride, Wolves in the Throne Room and Nile have always had a big part in it. Akira Yamaoka and his Silent Hill music, and the old SNES games like Zelda and Metroid are major influences for me. Also a surprising amount of older Trance music gives me the ideas to write blackened riffs. There was also local band called The Orchard,  keyboards and really badass musicianship with an often terrifying atmosphere to their live show. I really wanted to play after seeing them.

13.What are some of your non musical interests?
Most of us like Video Games to some degree, but thats fairly common. Movies and Wrestling is prevalent in the band as well. Model making, Art, Photography, are some of the hobbies members share.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Nachtterror is a band of brothers who grew up facing each others darkness, and understanding a bit more of themselves for it. We have all fallen, and in that darkness we have all risen up with our own "dark god" of conciousness to guide us toward a new flame of hope. With this album, I hope the listener can reflect in their own Dark Mirror of Judgement and maybe face the things they do not wish to see. So they can rise up out of the sea of dread, and become the Ruler of their own Kingdom.
