Antipope/Rex Mundi/Moribund Records/2022 Full Length Review

 

  Finland's  Antipope  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  melodic  and  progressive  mixture  of  black,  doom  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Rex  Mundi"  which  will  be  released  on  October  28th  by  Moribund  Records.

  A  very  epic  sounding  synth  orientated  intro  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  also  introducing  melodic  guitar  solos  and  leads  onto  the  recording.  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also b e  hear d in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can b e  heard.

  Melodies  are  also added  into  a  lot  of t he  guitar  riffing  while  the  vocals  bring  in  a  mixture  of  first  wave  style  black  metal  screams  and  power  metal  style  singing.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  all  of t he  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  sounding  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  clean  playing.  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  some  death  metal  growls  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  upon  the  Albigensian  Crusade  and  Cathar  Wars  in t he  1200's.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Antipope  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  melodic  and  progressive  black,  death,  doom,  power  and  heavy  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Rex  Mundi  Aeternum"  "Glory  Of  Slaughter"  "Twilight  of  The  Grey  Gods"  and  "Hell  On  Earth".  8  out  of  10.

    

        

Cadaveria/Emptiness/Time To Kill Records/2022 Full Length Review

 

  Italy's  Cadaveria  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  horror  orientated  mixture  of  black,  dark  and  gothic  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album    "Emptiness"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Time  TO  Kill  Records.

  A  very  dark,  heavy  yet  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  clean  vocals  also  bring  in  elements  of  gothic  metal  into  the  music  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  also be  heard  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  old  school  style.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  dark,  death  and  traditional  metal  touches  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  a  couple  of  songs  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  as  well  as  the  slower  sections  of  the  album  also  showing  an  influence  of  doom  metal,  synths  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  when  whispers  are  utilized  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling  and  the  album  also  closes  with  a  cover  of  Deine  Lakaien's  "Return".  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism  and  Horror  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Cadaveria  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  dark  and  gothic  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Great  Journey"  "The  Woman  Who  Fell  To  The  Earth"  "Live  After"  and  "Return".  8  out  of  10.

Thos Ælla/Sempiternal Mobocracies/I, Voidhanger Records/2022 CD Review

 

  Thos  Ælla  are  a  solo  project  from  Georgia  that  plays  an  old  school  and  melodic  form  of  blackened  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2022  album  "Sempiternal  Mobocracies"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.

  Acoustic  guitars  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  orchestration  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  Elements  of  thrash  metal  can  also be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  the  vocals a re  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  emtal  growls.  

  Most  of  the album  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  era  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  sounding  along  with  some  touches  of  death'n'roll  also  being  added  into  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  and  the  tracks  also  mix  in  a  great  amount  of  traditional  metal  influences. 

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  also be  heard  along  with  some  melodic  vocals  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks  and  a  couple  of  the  songs  are  also  long  and  epic  in  length  and  as  the  album  progresses  shouting  style  vocals  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  cosmic  horror  of  H.P  Lovecraft  and  the  sword  and  sorcery  of  Robert  E.  Howard.

  In  my  opinion  Thos  Ælla   are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  and  melodic  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Transcending  Chronology  Towards  An  Inexorable  Future"  "This  Firestorm  Of  Retribution"  "Winds  of  PestilenceCarry  the  Dust  of  Angelic  Bones"  and  "Conjured  to  Conquer  (We  Drink  From  the  Chalice  Of  Triumph)".  8  out  of  10.

Diabol Boruta/Zywioly/2022 CD Review

 

  Diabol  Boruta  are  a  band  form  Poland  that  plays  folk  metal  with  some  elements  of  heavy,  thrash,  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2022  album  "Zywioly"  which  will  be  released  on  January  17th.

  Keyboards  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  Clean  vocals  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Elements  of  folk  rock  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  Nature  sounds  and  acoustic  guitars  are  also  introduced  on  one  of  the  tracks  along  with  the  riffs  also  mixing  in  the  heaviness  of  thrash  and  traditional  metal.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  utilized  briefly.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  some  tracks  also  adding  in  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  screams,  percussions  and  folk  instruments  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  album  and  on  one  song  the  vocals  go  into  more  of  an  aggressive  shouting  style.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Polish  and  cover  Slavic  mythology  and  one  song  also  covers  the  mythology  of  the  Australian  Aborigines.  

  In  my  opinion  Diaboli  Boruta  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  folk,  black,  death,  thrash  and  heavy  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Pielgrzym"  "Of  Black  Faires"  and  "Ziema  (Dreamtime)".  8  out  of  10.

Morgul Blade Interview

 

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album? 

We are about halfway done writing our follow up album, and are beginning to plan tours and shows now that the world is returning to pre 2020 form. 

2.You have a new album coming out in November, musically how does it differ form your previous ep? 

More Melody. More Harmonies. Just a general MORE of what was captured on the EP

3.A lot of your lyrics are inspired by the writings of J.R.R Tolkien, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in his work and also do you have any interest in other fantasy authors? 

I read a lot of fantasy. I love Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, Patrick 

Rothfuss, Joe Abercrombie, Tad Williams among many others. But I love Tolkien because he was truly the master and progenitor of the modern genre.

4.You also cover history and folklore with your lyrics, which historical topics and era's of folklore do you cover? 

I love European and American folklore. I’ve taken college classes on both. Also I’m well versed on in depth eastern and western cultural history, namely medieval and ancient militaries. Swords are cooler then most things.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Morgul Blade'? 

The Morgul Blade is the dagger the witch king uses to turn people into ringwraiths. So basically its the essence of evil forged into a blade. Sounds like a pretty good name of a heavy metal band to me.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover? 

Its titled “the Dark Magi” and was painted by my dear friend “Wyrmwalk” he is local to Philadelphia like ourselves. He was inspired by the works of Gerald Brom. It is meant to exemplify the title of the record in a metaphorical way.

7.What are some of the best shows that has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance? 

We have not played shows as a band yet, but they are coming soon, we have some cool surprises up our sleeve. 

8.Do you have any show plans for the remainder of 2021 or 2022? 

Tours, and the recording of our follow up Album. 

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of melodic and extreme metal? 

The reception has been so great and supportive, we never expected to reach the heights that we have. We are on peoples most anticipated albums of 2021 lists and hope to also be on their “Best of 2021” as well!

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future? 

The new stuff we have been writing is a little darker, and less heroic, we also have been working our love for 80s Los Angeles bands into some of our riffs (Dokken, Ratt, ETC)

  Epic  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  at  times.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  great  amount  of  80's  era  traditional  metal  elements  and  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  grim  black  metal  screams.  

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  black  metal  side  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  second  wave  era.  Clear  traditional  metal  style  vocals  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  a  couple  of  songs  also  introducing  acoustic  guitars  onto  the  album.

  Alchemia  are  a  band  from  Brazil  that  plays  a  symphonic  mixture  of  black,  death,  goth  and  heavy  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Inception"  which  was  released  by  WormHoleDeath  Records.

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  symphonic  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  vocals  that  also  add  in  touches  of  hard  rock  and  traditional  metal  while  King  Diamond  style  vocals  are  also  utilized  at  times.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  some  aggressive  shouts  also  being  utilized  at  times.

Ren Marabou/Valhalla Waits/Misanthropik Records/2021 Full Length Review

 

  Ren  Marabou  is  a  solo  artist  from  Ireland  that  plays  a  melodic  mixture  of  Viking,  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2021  album  "Valhalla  Waits"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Misanthropik  Records.

  Dark  soundscapes  and  clean  playing  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  symphonic  musical  direction.  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  while  the  vocals  also  bring  in  a  mixture  of  aggressive  shouts  and  clean  pagan  vocals  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

  The  riffs  also  bring  in  the  heaviness  of  the  more  melodic  style  of  black  and  death  metal  at  times  while  battle  chants  can  also  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  music.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.

Juha Jyrkas/Sydameni Kuusipuulle/Earth And Sky Productions/2019 CD Review

 

  Juha  Jyrkas  is  a  solo  artist  from  Finland  that  is  a  former  songwriter  Korpiklaani  and  plays  folk  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  20219  album  "Sydameni  Kuusipuulle"  which  was  released  by  Earth  And  Sky  Productions.

  Ritualistic  sounding  drumming  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  riffing  a  few  seconds  later.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  solos  and  leads  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  black  metal  screams  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  music.

  Clean  pagan  vocals  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  album  while  the  music  also  has  its  epic  moments  and  touches  of  traditional  metal  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  The  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  folk  music  elements  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  Turkish  baglama's onto  the  album  as  well  as  some  female  vocals  also  being  utilized  briefly,  as  the  album  progresses  a  small  amount  of  folk  instruments  and  shamanistic  chanting  can  also  be  heard  and  all  of  the  music  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction.

  Juha  Jyrkas  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  folk,  pagan,  black  and  traditional  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  Paganism,  Mysticism  and  Nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Juha  Jyrkas  is  a  very  great  sounding  folk  metal  solo  artist  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Kymmenen  Kyrvan  Nimea"  "Manalan  Valtikka"  "Voimaa"  and  "Juhlapaiva".  8  out  of  10.

  Numenor  are  a  band  from  Serbia  that  plays  an  epic  and  symphonic  mixture  of  black,  death,  power  and  heavy  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Draconian  Age"  which  was  released  by  Elevate.

  Melodic  guitar  leads  start  off  the  album  and  are  done  in  a  classic  metal  metal  while  the  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and power  metal  clean  singing.  Most  of  the  music  is  heavily  rooted  in  both  the  80's  and  90's  era  but  modern  at  the  same  time  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  while  one  of  the  tracks  is  a  cover  of  "Hall  Of  The  Mountain  King"  and  introduces  keyboards  and  symphonic  elements  onto  the  album.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Some  of  the  riffing  also  shows  an  influence  of  the  more  melodic  death  metal  style  along  with  the  songs  also  capturing  an  epic  atmosphere  as  well  as  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  back  up  shouts,  all  of  the  music  sticks  to  a  mid  tempo  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  based  upon  the  writings  of  Michael  Moorcock,  J.R.R  Tolkien  and  H.P  Lovecraft.

  In  my  opinion  Numenor  are  a  very  great  sounding  epic  and  symphonic  mixture  of  black,  death,  power  and  heavy  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Make  The  Stand"  "Arkenstone"  "Twilight  Of  The  Gods"  and  "The  Last  of  Wizards".  8  out  of  10.

Maudiir/La Part Du Diable/2021 EP Review

 

  Maudiir  are  a  solo  project  from  Montreal,  Quebec,  Canada  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  melodic  and  progressive  mixture  of  black  and  thrash  metal  with  some  elements  of  punk  and  traditional  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2021  ep  "La  Part  Du  Diable"  which  will  be  released  in  February.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  ep  before  going  into  a  heavier  thrash  medal  influenced  direction  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  the  solos  and  leads  also  remain  true  to  an  old  school  style.

  Elements  of  traditional  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  decent  amount  of  progressive  structures.  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking.

  at  times  the  music  also  captures  the  raw  energy  of  punk  rock  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  as  the  ep  progresses  the  solos  and  leads  also  go  into  more  of  a  melodic  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  conspiracy  theories,  the  political  climate  in  the  U.S  and  the  Covid  19  pandemic.

Marthe/Sisters Of Darkness/Caligari Records/2020 EP Review

  Marthe  are  a  solo  project  from  Italy  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  doom  and  heavy  metal  with  some  elements  of  crust,  d  beat  and  gothic  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  her  2020  ep  "Sisters  Of  Darkness"  which  was  released  by  Caligari  Records.

  Spoken  word  parts  start  off  the  ep  while  also  mixing  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  along  with  some  elements  of  doom  metal  in  the  slower  riffs.  Dark  sounding  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  all  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Vocals  are  mostly  done  in  a  clean  style  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  old  school  style.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  all  of  the  drumming  being  done  on  an  electronic  drum  kit  and  most  of  the  music  is  heavily  rooted  in  the  70's,  80's  and  90's  era.

  The  music  also  mixes  in  a  great  amount  of  traditional  metal  elements  along  with  the  music  also  capturing  the  dark  atmosphere  of  old  school  occult  black  metal.  Some  of  the  clean  vocals  also  add  in  a  touch  of  gothic  rock  as  well  as some  of  the  music  also  showing  some  influences  of  crust  and  d  beat.

  As  the  ep  progresses  a  brief  use  of  synths  can  also  be  heard  and  the  whole  recording  sticks  to  a  slower  direction,  one  track  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  grim  screams  and  the  closing  song  also  introduces  clean  playing  onto  the  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  auto determination,  acceptance  of  life  cycle,  empathy  and  nature  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  Marthe  is  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  doom  and  heavy  metal  with  some  elements  of  gothic  rock,  crust  and  d  beat  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Sisters  Of  Darkness"  and  "Awake  Arise  Silence".  8  out  of  10.

Maudiir Interview

For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project? MAUDIIR is a one-man project that started in Montreal at the end of 2018. After working with various people on different projects, I needed to do something on my own. Having always been a guitar player, I decided to buy a bass guitar, and try out on vocals, to be able to depend only on myself and eliminate compromise.



Recently you have released an ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style you went for on the recording? On ‘Le Temps Peste’, I’m mixing black metal, thrash metal, and NWOBHM. I think there is also a punk drive in some of the riffs. I was aiming for a mix of old school and modern stuff.



What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored so far with the musical project? Consumer society, religion, science going awry, addiction to technology, environmental decay.



What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Maudiir'? The name is derived from the French word ‘maudire’, which means ‘to curse’. My brother and a few of his good friends got together and came up with the name. I thought it was quite fitting with the lyrics of the songs and the general mood of the music. Even if all the songs are in English, we wanted a name that could also reflect my culture as Québécois.     



Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover? The picture is of an old garbage incinerator in Montreal. It was taken during a recent snowstorm. I think it represents very well the lyrical themes of the EP, and it is also a prominent sight in the particular neighborhood of Montreal where it is situated. 



With this musical project you record everything by yourself but have experience working with full line ups, how would you compare the two? These days I very much like the freedom of working alone. Despite the fact that writing and recording everything by oneself is a lot of work, it’s actually much faster than waiting around for people to do their parts. There is irreplaceable chemistry and camaraderie that comes with working in a band situation, but the right people are hard to find, and it takes a lot of time and dedication. My experiences led to hiring musicians that recorded their parts the way they wanted on songs that I had written. The results were good, I think, but it becomes a long, costly and draining process.     



Currently, you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest? I’m not shopping around for a label. If ever I would receive an interesting offer, I would consider it. 



On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black, death and thrash metal? The EP has been out for only 2 weeks, so it’s pretty hard to evaluate a worldwide reaction for now. People, in general, seem to be very enthusiastic about the music, more than any other project I’ve worked on so far, which I find very encouraging.



What is going on with 'Trinity Blast' these days? We have released 2 new singles at the beginning of the year, so with the release of the MAUDIIR EP, I find it’s a pretty good start to the year for me.



When can we expect a full length and also where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future? I think I’m going to continue doing EPs for a while as it takes less time to publish new music. I already have 2 songs written for the next MAUDIIR release.



What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays? I’m influenced by modern and old-school black metal, classic 80’s metal such as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, thrash metal. These days I’m really enjoying the new Obsequiae album, which I think is brilliant, as was ‘Aria of Vernal Tombs’. The new Mayhem album is great too. I’m listening to a lot of different music, from The Beatles to extreme metal.   



What are some of your nonmusical interests? TV series, movies.

Canyon Of The Skull/Sins Of The Past/2019 Full Length Review

  Texas's  Canyon  Of  The  Skull  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  with  the  music  going  into  an  instrumental  and  progressive  mixture  of  black,  sludge,  funeral  doom  and  heavy  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2019  album  "Sins  Of  The  Past"  which  will  be  released  on  November  20th.

  A  very  slow,  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  which  also  introduces  elements  of  sludge  and  funeral  doom  metal  into  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  both  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  black  metal  influences  while  the  music  also  captures  an  improv  atmosphere  at  times.  At  times  the  music  gets  very  repetitive  with  the  songs  also  using  the  same  riffing  for  a  few  minutes  before  going  into  a  different  direction  and  as  the  first  track  progresses  melodic  guitar  leads  are  also  added  onto  the  recording.

   When  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  also   be  heard,  A  small  amount  of  percussion  can  be  heard  briefly  and  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  shamanistic  feeling  as  well  as  the  second  track  also  introducing  acoustic  guitars  and  melodic  riffing  onto  the  recording  and  at  times  the  music  also  has  its  progressive  moments.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  album  while  the  song  themes  focus  on  the  indigenous  Americans  of  the  Southwest.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Canyon  of  The  Skull  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  instrumental  black,  sludge  and  funeral  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "The  Sun  Dance".  8  out  of  10.

  Anticosm  are  a  band  from  New  Jersey  and  on  this  recording  goes  for  more  of  a  mixture  of  melodic  black,  traditional  metal  and  thrash'n'roll  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "The  Call  Of  The  Void"  which  will  be  released  in  August  by  Hell  Kill  Destroy  Records.

  Avant  garde  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  musical  direction.  The  solos  and  leads  also  utilizing  a  great  amount  of  melody  while  the  faster  sections  of   the  music  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  music  also  mixes  in  elements  of  thrash ,  traditional  metal  and  rock  music.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  one  track  also  introduces  a  brief  use  of  classical  guitars  onto  the  recording  and  death  emtal  growls  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  music.

  On  this  recording  Anticosm  takes  the  black  emtal  side  of  their  music  into  more  of  a  melodic  direction  while  also  keeping  elements  of  thrash,  traditional  metal  and  rock  music  that  where  present  on  their  previous  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  philosophical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Anticosm  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  melodic  black,  thrash,  heavy  metal  and  rock  music,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Viral"  "Call  Of  the  Void"  "Behold  the  Venom  Crystals"  and  "Never  Enough".  8  out  of  10.

   Fire  burning  and  classical  music  style  keyboards  start  off  the  album  before  adding  some  melodic  guitar  leads  onto  the  recording  while  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  During  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  you  can  also  hear  some  blast  beats  and  elements  of  speed  metal.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and fast  parts  while  the  fast  tremolo  picking  riffs  are  heavily  rooted  in  black  metal.  Vocals  are  mostly  clean  traditional  metal  vocals  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  A  lot  of  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  80's  while  the  black  metal  elements  gives  the  songs  a  more  up  to  date  feeling.  Acoustic,  classical  guitars  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  a  brief  use  of  nature  sounds  as  well  as  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  touch  of  post  punk  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the lyrics  cover  sorrow,  love,  loneliness,  sex,  perseverance  and  power  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Lunar  Shadow  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  heavy  and  melodic  black  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Catch  Fire"  "Pretend"  and  "Hawk  of  The  Hills".  8  out  of  10.

Lord Vampyr/Death Comes Under The Sign Of The Cross/Sleaszy Rider Records/2019 Full Length Review

  Lord  Vampyr  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  started  out  as  more  of  a  symphonic  black  metal  but  have  evolved  into  more  of  goth  and  industrial  metal  direction  on  past  releases  before  going  into  more  of  goth  and  traditional  metal  style  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "Death  Comes  Under  The  Sign  Of  The  Cross"  which  was  released  by  Sleaszy  Rider  Records.

  Battle  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  classical  guitars  and  synths  a  few  seconds  later.  A  great  amount  of  melody  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  vocals  are  done  in  a  mostly  clean  style  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Some  of  the  vocals  also  have  some  touches  of  heavy  and  power  metal  while  some  tracks  also  add  in  some  synths.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  as  well  as  the  music  also  having  a  good  mixture  of  80's  and  90's  influences.

  A  touch  of  black  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  fast  tremolo  picking  when  it  is  utilized  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  symphonic  sounds  can  also  be  heard  as  well  as  the  closing  track  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Vampirism  and  Anti  Religion  themes.

  In  my  opinion  while  Lord  Vampyr  have  moved  away  from  black  or  industrial  metal  they  still  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  goth,  dark  and  heavy  metal  and  if  would  recommend  this  band  to  fans  of  those  genres.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Death  Comes  Under  The  Sign  of  The  Cross"  "Iconoclast  Heresy"  and  "Violent  Awarness  of  the  Absence  Of  God".  8  out  of  10.
