Cultic Interview

 

CULTIC INTERVIEW 

W/ Brian Magar & Andrew Harris



1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of LORE?


Brian: Since the release we’ve been playing shows, writing new material and ideating new concepts. This train keeps a rollin all night long.  


Andrew: Riffs and shows baby. 


2.In October you released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?


Brian: We’re growing. LORE is really just a deeper pool of what we’ve done in the past. I think the writing is tighter and more focused in both the intros and the songs. But our overall vision never waivers. 



3.You refer to your music as being 'dark dungeon metal', can you tell us a little bit more about this term?


Brian: It’s a bite from Mortiis’s “Dark Dungeon Music”. We started calling ourselves “Dark Dungeon Metal” after we added the Dungeon Synth elements to our music.


Andrew: It is the sound of you rotting in a dungeon. It is what you hear when any hope of freedom you have as you rot in your cell finally fades away. 



4.A lot of your lyrics cover dark fantasy themes, which aspect of this topic do you cover with your songwriting?


Brian: All of our lyrics explore dark fantasy themes. CULTIC is a conceptual band. Each of our albums follows a specific theme, and each song tells an individual story within that theme. All of our full-length albums connect to one another, forming one continuous overarching narrative. The same is true of our album artwork. If you place all of our LP covers side by side in order, they create a single continuous image. Our next full-length album will reveal even more of that scene.


The Cliff’s Notes version of the CULTIC universe goes like this:

Our first album, HIGH COMMAND, centers on a great war fought between two powers, with each song exploring different aspects of that conflict. Our second album, OF FIRE AND SORCERY, visually depicts a warlock receiving an enchantment from a dragon statue; the album itself focuses on the sorcery used to summon the great dragon featured on HIGH COMMAND. Our most recent album, LORE, revolves around various characters who inhabit this world, while also explaining how the Warlock gained the knowledge needed to summon the dragon.

I’m essentially writing this story in reverse order.




5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?


Brian: The LORE album art features the NOMAD. A lone warrior and pariah who carries hidden knowledge of sorcery. He serves as the connection between LORE and OF FIRE AND SORCERY, as he’s the one who supplied the WARLOCK with the spell used to summon the great dragon.

My wife Rebecca, who is also our drummer, creates all of our cover art. She absolutely nailed this one. It’s my favorite album cover by far. I’d describe it as BOLT THROWER meets BLIND GUARDIAN.



6.Out of all the shows and tours the band has been so far, which one stands out the most?


Brian: We’re not a touring band, so I can’t really speak to that. As far as memorable shows go, there’s always something, but two come to mind. We recently opened for CONAN, which was hands down the largest show we’ve ever played and a real milestone for the band. We also played a SOUL GRINDER Records show at the Alternative Gallery in Allentown, PA earlier this year. It was a cool venue with great hospitality. I’ve been playing in bands on and off since I was a young teenager, and I’d never played a show where the band was assigned a road crew until that night.


Andrew: Conan show was cool. Really dug playing with Spiter and Total Maniac. Anytime we play with Grozov is also a good time. 





7.Do you have any touring or show plans for 2025?


Brian: The only thing we have lined up for 2026 so far is Ann Everton’s memorial show at the OTTOBAR in Baltimore. It’s a two day event Feb 30 & March 1. I’m not sure on the hard and fast details yet.


Andrew: We would love to do some festivals. 


8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of extreme metal?


Brian: We’ve done more with this band in nine years, than I ever imagined possible. 


Andrew: Absolute rabid devotion. Some real freaks out there. 



9.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?


Brian: My solo project, LAYR has been sitting on a full length DUNGEON SYNTH album for 5 years. If any Dungeon Synth labels are reading this, hit me up. I know Andrew has some stuff going on with his solo project, GRIM DISCIPLINE. He just came out with an EP called PENNSYLVANIAN THIRST. 


Andrew: yeah, I just released my first EP and will continue to write and record my solo stuff under that moniker. Check it out. 






10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?


Brian: Straight to the top of madness mountain. We’ll keep getting heavier and weirder. I did an interview last year where I said I was going to incorporate HARSH DUNGEON NOISE into LORE. But I didn’t do it. Maybe we’ll go in that direction in the future? Maybe more atmospheric or theatrical passages within our songs? One thing I will say is that we will not stray from DARK DUNGEON METAL!!!!


Andrew: Who knows? The riffs come down to us so I cannot predict what the gods will deliver. It is simply my duty to pass on the message. 



11.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?


Brian: I always have a bunch of old stuff in rotation. Maiden, Priest, early Scorpions, Motorhead and so on. The real stuff.  


I’ve been slowly acquiring more BLIZARO albums this year. Big fan of that Italian horror sound. 


As far as really underground stuff goes. BALL always finds a way into my late night antics. If you have an itch for some super sleazy, drugged out, Satanic, porno loving rock and roll. Check out BALL. Fuckin Love that band. 

I’m always going to name drop the NECRO INVEST record label anytime I get the chance. If I had to guess, I think every band on the label is the same  person or group of people. Kinda has a GRIME STONE RECORDS vibe but different. It’s fun, reckless, lo-fi, unhinged, metal punk music for nuclear wasteoids. RAT OF SODOM, CREMAZIONE and SPHYNX’s rule. 


My favorite album of 2025 is PAGAN ALTAR’s “NEVER QUITE DEAD”. Really solid metal album front to back. I think it’s the only metal album that literally choked me up the first time I listened to it. This album should have received A LOT more attention than it did. 


Andrew: Old shit. 70s era Scorpions, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest. Random black metal at times. Antonin Dvorak. 



12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?


Brian: Always humbled. Thank you for the opportunity. Keep doing what you’re doing. It’s important.

Cultic/Lore/Eleventh Key Records/2025 Full Length Rvbiew

 


  Cultic  are  a  band  from  Pennsylvania  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  doom,  death  metal  and  dungeon  synth  with  the  energy  of  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Lore"  which  was  released  by  Eleventh  Key  Records.


  Dungeon  synth  style  synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  The  slower  parts  of  the  recording  also  add  in  elements  of  doom  metal  while  the  vocals  are  done  in  more  of  a  first  wave  black  metal  style  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.


  The  music  also  adds  in  the  heaviness  of  old  school  death  metal  while  all  of  the  songs  also  have  interludes  in  between  them.  Most  of  the  album  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  and  early  90's  era  along  with  the  recording  also  capturing  the  energy  of  punk  at  times  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  remaining  very  true  to  an  old  school  direction.


  Spoken  words  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  acoustic  guitars.  As  the  album  progresses  some  of  the  vocals  also  bring  in  the  grim  atmosphere  of  second  wave  black  metal ,  one  song  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  battle  samples  and  the  whole  album  also  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  fantasy  themes.


  In  my  opinion  Cultic  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  doom,  death  emtal,  punk  and  dungeon  synth  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Nomad"  "Night  Grifter"  "ancinet  Kings"  and  "Dungeon  Wench".  8  out  of  10.

Agenbite Misery/Remorse Of Conscience/2026 Full Length Review

 


  Agenbite  Misery  are  a  band  from  New  Hampshire  that  plays  an  experimental  mixture  of  black  and  sludge  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  album  "Remorse  Of  Conscience"  which  will  be  released  in  2026.


  A  very  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  spoken  words  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  while  the  vocals  bring  in  a  mixture  of  black  emtal  screams,  death  metal  growls  and  sludge  style  shouts  and  a  lot  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.


  Influences  of  hardcore  and  power  violence  can  also b e  heard  at  times  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  Elements  of  funeral  doom  metal  can  also b e  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  album  also  having  its  experimental  moments  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.


  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  melodic  style.  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks  as  well  as  some  ambient  style  textures  also  being  utilized  at  times,  tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  fast  riffing.  


  Some  of  the  riffing  also  brings  in  the  classic  noise  rock  style  as  well  as  each  song  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other.  Synths  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  album  along  with  one  song  also  bringing  in  more  of  an  industrial  and  post  punk  style  mixed  in  with  a  touch  of  blackgaze,  programmed  beats  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  and  some  tracks  also  adds  in  touches  of  noise,  drone,  indie  rock,  dungeon  synth  and  psychedelia.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  writings  of  James  Joyce.


  In  my  opinion  Agenbite  Misery  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black  and  sludge  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Cascara  Sagrada"  "Circe"  and  "Mnesterophonia".  8  out  of  10.

Evoking Winds/Bald Mountain/2023 Full Length Review

 


  Belarus's  Evoking  Winds  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  atmospheric,  melodic  and  symphonic  mixture  of  black  and  folk  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2023  album  "Bald  Mountain".


  A  very  dark  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  spoken word  parts  and  elements  of  folk  music  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  Female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  on  a  few  tracks  along  with  some  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars.


  At  times the music  also  gets  very  symphonic  and  atmospheric  sounding  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  and  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.


   All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  melody.  Growls  are  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized ,  one  song  also  introduces  clear  vocals  onto  the  album  and  spoken  word  parts  also  return  in  certain  sections  of  the  album  and  the  songs  also  add  in  some  orchestral  and  dungeon  synth  touches.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  and  cover ancient  tales  from  Eastern  Europe.  


  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Evoking  Winds  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  melodic  and  symphonic  black  and  folk  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Wild  Hunt"  "The  Oath"  "In  The  Whispers  of  Stars  Far  Away"  and  "Night  of  The  Elders".  8  out  of  10.

Hiverlucide/Spaceseer/ Φ​α​λ​α​ι​ν​ο​μ​α​ν​ι​τ​ά​ρ​ι/Syrup Moose Records/2023 Collaboration Album Review

 


  This  is  a  review  of  a  collaboration  album  between  France's  Hiverlucide  and  U.S.A's  solo  project  Spaceseer  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  doom  synth,  experimental,  industrial,  noise  and  dark  ambient  and  the  album  will  be  released  on  July  21st  by  Syrup  Moose  records  and  called  "Φ​α​λ​α​ι​ν​ο​μ​α​ν​ι​τ​ά​ρ​ι".


  Dark  ambient  soundscapes  and  drones  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  guitar  sounds  a  few  seconds  later  that  also  bring  in  the  heaviness  of  black  and  doom  metal.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  sounding  while  both  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  whole  recording  is  also  improvised.


  Harsh  noises  and  power  electronics  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  album  while  the  synths  also  add  in  touches  of  dungeon  synth  when  they  are  utilized.  Both  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other  along  with  the  second  song  also  mixing  in  the  more  underground  side  of  industrial  and  black  metal  screams  are  also  utilized  briefly  towards  the  end.


  Hiverlucide  and  Spaceseer  team  up  together  and  mix  their  2  different  styles  together  which  results  in  an  album t hat  mixes  black,  doom  metal,  noise,  industrial,  drone,  experimental,  dark  ambient  and  dungeon  synth  as  well  as  keeping  most  of t he  music  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.


  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collaboration  between  Hiverlucide  and  Spaceseer  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal,  doom  synth,  industrial,  noise  and  dark  ambient,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Slowly  Collecting  Substrate  For  The  Hericium  Whale".  8  out  of  10.

Evoking Winds/The Heroes/2022 FUll Length Review

 


  Evoking  Winds  are  a  band  from  Belarus  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  takes  an  atmospheric  and  symphonic  style  of  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  folk  metal  and  dungeon  synth  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2022  album  "The  Heroes".


  A  very  heavy  yet  symphonic  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  great  amount  of  atmospheric  touches.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  some  blast  beats  and  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  instrumentals.


  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  lot  of  black  and  folk  metal  elements.  On  some  of  the  tracks  the  music  also  brings  in  more  of  a  dungeon  synth  an d  fantasy  movie  soundtrack  music  style  and  throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.


  On  this  recording  Evoking  Winds  takes  an  atmospheric  and  symphonic  style  of  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  folk,  dungeon  style  and  fantasy  soundtrack  music  to  create  something  very  different  sounding  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  professional.


  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Evoking  Winds  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  symphonic  black,  folk  metal  and  dungeon  synth,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "To  Arms"  "Echoes  of  battles"  "Warlock's  Power"  and  "Elemental  magic".  8  out  of  10.

Pulsa DiNura Interview

 

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?


We're a two-man metal project from Kentucky. We play a blend of black metal, industrial, and dungeon synth. 


2.So far you have released a couple of albums, musically how do they both differ from each other?


I don't feel that the albums differ from each very much. They were both recorded during the same time. Some of the songs that wound up on If It Bleeds, We Can Kill It (our second album) were finished before some of the songs on The Misanthropy Gospel (the first album). For instance, "Humanity's Tomb" was one of the first songs written for Pulsa diNura but it didn't fit with the other songs on The Misanthropy Gospel so it was reworked and included on If It Bleeds. The lyrical concepts are consistent between both albums, and some of the lyrics make references to ideas explored in other songs.


3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?


The lyrics cover some of my frustrations with being an American in modern times as well as my opinion on broader topics. I feel that religious institutions are generally some of our biggest problems in society, and that idea gets a fair amount of attention in the lyrics. The lyrics tend to be considered misanthropic because my personal view of people is that we're much more stunted in our collective than we should be; we should have grown up more than we have as a species, and that frustrates me. In turn, that frustration comes out in the lyrics.


4.I Know that the bands name comes from the Qaballa, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic?


I discovered the term "Pulsa diNura" while reading up on different versions of the Golem story. Once I investigated what it meant, I was intrigued. It seems like the ultimate revenge: a death curse of eternal damnation without even a god being able to save you. The English translation would be "The Lashes of Fire," which is the name of a song from The Misanthropy Gospel.


5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?


The artwork for If It Bleeds, We Can Kill It is the result of too many hours spent manipulating and combining images. Essentially, it's Pandaemonium (the capital of Hell) with a statue's face blended into the foreground. 


6.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?


We've had offers from other musicians who want to join but adding members isn't something we're interested in doing. We work well as a two-piece and have no need to expand unless we decide to play shows, which we probably won't.


7.Are any of the band members open to do any live shows once the pandemic ends?


Not particularly. We both have other bands that play shows, so that itch gets scratched elsewhere. As of right now, we prefer to focus entirely on writing and recording.


8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal and industrial?


So far, the reception has been good. We've not encountered anyone yet who hates it. The people who have been the most vocal about their praise, however, has been the black metal community, which I think is a compliment unto itself considering that black metal fans tend to be some of the hardest to impress.


9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?


Right now I don't see a lot of deviation from the formula we've been using. I've been tempted to use more industrial elements in some of the material that we're still working on (similar to "A Modern Extremity" or "Slanted Stairs to Salvation") but so far there's only one new song that leans more into industrial territory than metal.


10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?


Our influences primarily come from a lot of music that came out of the 90s metal, alternative, and electronic scenes. From Emperor to Smashing Pumpkins to Aphex Twin, I've always thought of Pulsa diNura as a modern spin on bands like Godflesh and Ministry but with more black metal and dark ambient influences.


11.What are you listening to nowadays?


Some newer stuff but also keeping the old classics in rotation. For instance, I listened to a bit of Deus Mortem, Squarepusher, and Black Flag on my way to and from work today.

  Pulsa  DiNura  are  a  duo  from  Kentucky  that  plays  a  mixture  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  industrial  and  dungeon  synth  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2021  album  "If  it  Bleeds,  We  Can  Kill  It".


  Industrial  style  beats  and  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  at  times.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  while  the  synths  also  add  in  a  touch  of  dungeon  synth  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.


  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments.  Programmed  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  along  with  a  couple  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  growls  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  most  of  the  music  also  sticking  to  a  mid  tempo  direction,  spoken  word  samples  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  the  closing  track.


  Pulsa  DiNura  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  atmospheric  black  metal,  industrial  and  dungeon  synth  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  misanthropy  themes.


  In  my  opinion   Pulsa  DiNura  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  industrial  and  dungeon  synth  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Evolution  Of  American  Filth"  "No  Exit"  and  "Slanted  Stairs  to  Salvation".  8  out  of  10.

Neos Gheron/Potius Nihil, Potius Desultus/Masked Dead Records/2018 CD Review


  Neos  Gheron  are  a  duo  from  Italy  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal  and  dungeon  synth  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Potius  Nihil,  Potius  Desultus"  which  was  released  by  Masked  Dead  Records.

  A  very  epic  synth  sound  starts  off  the  album  and  also  captures  the  atmosphere  of  a  fantasy  fil  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  along  with  some  battle  sounds  also  being  added  into  the  background  at  times  as  well  as  the  music  also  mixing  in  elements  of  dungeon  and  neo-classical.

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  no  traditional  instruments  are  ever  utilized  in  any  of  the  songs  along  with  the  songs  bringing  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  as  well  as  some  soundscapes  also  being  used  at  times  and  the  music  also  has  its  symphonic  moments,  background  voices  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  as  the  album  progresses  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  clean  vocals  and  some  tracks  also  add  in  programmed  drum  beats.

  Neos  Gheron  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black  metal  and  dungeon  synth  and  mixes  it  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own, the  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Italian  and  cover  medieval  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Neos  Gheron  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black  metal  and  dungeon  synth  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Potius  Nihil...  Potius  Deseltus  (Act.  I)  Ars  Falsarum Imaginium  Extintarum  (Act.  II)"  and  "Subdecti  Nostras  Memorias  Nequitunt  Laedere Inferiores".  8  out  of  10.
