Arkona/Kob/Napalm Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Arkona  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  pagan  and  folk  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Kob"  which  was  released  by  Napalm  Records.

  A  very  dark  and  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  spoken  chants  a  few  seconds  later  Ritualistic  soundscapes  and  whispered  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  black  metal  screams  and  growls  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of t he  recording.

  Keyboards  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  times  while  clear  pagan  vocals  can  also b e  heard  on  most  of  the  tracks.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  riffs  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars  are  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks  as  will  as  the  wind  instruments  also  adding  in  elements  of  folk  music  when  they  are  utilized.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Russian  and  cover  Slavic  Paganism  and  Mythology  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Arkona  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Kob'"  "Mor"  and  "Razryvaya  plot'  ot  bezyskhodnosti  bytiya".  8  out  of  10.

Trollgrad/Tales of Gold Fever/Mors Lucerna Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Trollgrad  are  a  band  from  New  York  that  plays  a  style  of  folk/black  metal  that  they  refer to  as  being  'troll  metal'  and  this  is  a review  of  their  2023  album  "Tales  of  Gold  Fever"  which  was  released  by  Mors  Lucerna  Records.

  Folk  instruments  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  back  up  vocals  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  Female  vocals  are  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  along  with  the  male  vocals  also  being  done  in  a  clear  pagan  metal  style  when  they  are  introduced  onto  the  album.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  faster  riffs  as  well  as  some  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  keyboards,  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  on  a  couple  of  tracks  and  throughout  the  album   you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  trolls  and  historical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Trollgrad  are  a  very  great  sounding  troll  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Trollhalla"  "Hail  To  Thee  Fallen  Miners"  and  "Moonlight  Spell".  8 out  of  10.

Orkrist/Luea/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Orkrist  are  a  band  from  Slovakia  that  plays  a  very  melodic  and  epic  mixture  of  black  and  folk  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2023  album  "Luea".

  Keyboards  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  When  female  vocals  are  utilized  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  gothic  metal  atmosphere  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  melody.

  Elements  of  folk  music  and  flutes  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  aggressive  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.  Clear  male  pagan  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard.

  At  time s the  music  also  gets  very  epic  sounding  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  the  tracks  also  mixing  in  a  lot  of  traditional  metal  elements,  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  closing  track  is  an  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  writings  of  J.R.R  Tolkien.

  In  my  opinion  Orkrist  are  a  very  great  sounding  epic  and  melodic  mixture  of  black  and  folk  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Raven  Of  Revenge"  "Prince  Of  Melancholy"  and  "Black  Bird's  Beard".  8  out  of  10.

Ydolothytum/In The Circle Of Spectral Forces/Crush The Desert Records/2023 Demo Review

 

  Ydolothytum  are  an  international  band  with  members  from  Poland  and  Italy  that  plays  an  old  school  mixture  of  black  and  folk  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  demo  "In  The  Circle  Of  Spectral  Forces"  which  was  released  by  Crush  The  Desert  Records.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  demo  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.  Clear  pagan  vocals  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  along  with  the  music  being  more  closer  to  the  90's  underground  era  of  folk  metal  instead  of  the  more  modern  style  and  black  metal  screams  are  also utilized  at  times.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  keyboards  can  also b e  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  A  lot  of t he  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  classic  Nordic  style  and  all  of  the  tracks  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  musical  direction.

  Ydolothytum  plays  a  style  of  black/folk  metal  that  is  more  closer  to  the  classic  style  of  Isengard  and  Storm  and  avoid  the  modern  ways  of  the  genre,  The  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  legends  of  the  Eastern  Carpathian,  Werewolves,  Vampires  and  Strigoi.

  In  my  opinion  Ydolothytum  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  black/folk  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of t his  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Night  of  Cursed  Souls".  8  out  of  10.

  The  Promise  of  Plague  are  a  band  from  Louisville,  Kentucky  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  an  avant  garde  mixture  of  black,  doom, death  and  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2023  demo  "Let  Those  Unjust  Creatures  Be  Burnt".

  Bass  guitars  and  keyboards  start  off  the  demo  before  adding  in  some  heavier  riffing  and  clear  vocals.  Black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  while  the  music  also  has  its  avant  garde  moments  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  the  guitar  riffing  while  elements  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs.  Touches  of  thrash  metal  are  also  added  into  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  tracks  along  with  death  metal  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  keyboards  are  also  added  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  Female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  on  all  of  the  tracks  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style,  throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  demo  closes  with  a  cover  of  Manowar's  "Blood  of  my  Enemies".  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  The  Promise  of  Plague  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  avant  garde  black,  doom,  death  and  thrash  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Let  All  Your  Dreams  Be  Drained"  and  "Death  Shrouds  And  Vomit  Stains".  8  out  of  10.

Zaria/Tell The Wind/2022 Full length Review

 

  Zaria  are  a  band  from  Slovenia  that  has  been  featured  before  in t his  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  symphonic  form  of  folk  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2022  album  "Tell  The  Wind".

  Whispers  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  keyboards  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  time.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  symphonic  sounding  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  utilized  briefly  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  melody  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Touches  of  goth  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  female  vocals  which  also  brings  in  an  operatic  feeling  at  times.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  some songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  folk  music  instruments  and  the  extreme  vocals  are  done  in  more  of  a  black  metal  style,  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  on  a  couple  of  songs  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Some  of  the  tracks  also  bring  in  choirs  as  well  as  one  song  also  adding  in  small  amount  of  male  vocals.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  English  and  Slovenian  and  cover  ancient  battles,  folk  stories,  fantasy  and  ecological  issues.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Zaria  and  if  you  are  a f an  of  symphonic  folk  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Where  Adventures  Begin"  "Gea"  "Warlord"  and  "Tell  the  Wind".  8  out  of  10.

  Meschera  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  blackened  form  of  folk  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2023  ep  "Tales  of  The  Black  Forests".

  Melodic  guitar  solos  and  leads  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  female  vocals  a  few  seconds  later.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  black  metal  style  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  also be  heard  while  synths  also  give  the  music  more  of  an  epic  atmosphere  when  they  are  utilized  and  melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced and  fast  parts  while  elements  of  folk  music  and  stringed  instruments  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  The  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  along  with  some  male  vocals  also  being  introduced  on  the  second  track,  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.
