(Dolch)/Nacht/Van Records/2022 Full Length Review

(Dolch)  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  started  out  as  a  mixture  of  black,  doom  metal  and  drone  and  on  this  recording  goes  for  more  of  a  mixture  of  post  punk,  ambient  and  drone  with  some  touches  of  doom  metal  2022  album  "Nacht"  which  will be  released  in  February  by  Van  Records.

Dark  ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  a  few  seconds  later  while  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of t he  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  the  music  also  mixing  in  some  touches  of  post  punk  and  the  slower  riffing  also  adds  in  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal.

Atmospheric  sounding  drones  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  while  one  track  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  whispers.  Clear  male  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  some  of  the  drum  beats  also  being  programmed  as  well  as  a  later  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  the  whole  album  also  sticks  to  a  slower  direction.

8 Hour Animal Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

It’s just a place for me to go nuts. It’s as  rageful and fried as I want to get. No rules other than it’s just me doing everything . Right now I’m doing as much analogue gear as possible and that seems to work. It’s definitely manic so ii gotta keep an eye on how much time I spend everyday on it for my own well being…

2.So far this year you have released 2 albums, musically how do they both differ from each other?

I think there will be a total of 4  releases in  2021 for this project. The project has two sides, the more song oriented industrial stuff Resigner and longer experimental  pieces that I am happy to release in very small runs  on rad labels with minimal digital access.  There is something great about limiting how many people hear certain works.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored so far with the music so far?

Mostly alienation and mental illness. Figuring out what is  the inside crazy and what is the outside crazy. I realized how horrible, cruel and insincere people could be  when I was very young and have been trying to figure out why I even give a shit for 40 years. Weird music Marxism and  living in nature saved me.  Finding the right psych meds didn’t hurt either.

4.hat is the meaning and inspiration behind the name '8 Hour Animal'?

It is for when I feel like digital trash in a capitalist shit machine.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

I asked Paul (Van Trigt) to do something that makes you feel bad when you look it at it but you’re not sure exactly why. Paul does really top notch collage / xerox art for a ton of great noise bands.

6.So far very little is known about the musical project with you only having a bandcamp and instragram page, are you planning on expanding your presence in the future or do you prefer to keep a lower profile?

I am too old to  truly value  being  cool or popular.  When those urges do flare up I try to remind myself how grossly unsatisfying it is to join the art star rat race.  It would be nice to play for appreciative audiences at some point…. so that requires some exposure. Music needs an audience that’s part of the deal. However t he whole process has been bastardized  by the sadly predictable exploitive bloodsucking bullshit you see in every aspect of our world.

7.the new album was released on 'Sentient Ruin Laboratories', how did you get in contact with this label?

I was listening to the first decoherence and thought - this is weird and unclassifiable and SR does a decent amount of releases that straddle metal, noise etc. I sent a few songs to MA and he got back to me quickly and we agreed to do the LP.  It just worked out, you really can’t force these things.

8.on a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal, harsh noise and industrial?

It is hard to gauge but I am satisfied to see that some people dig it. The idea with Resigner was to push everything all the way. Make ugly music that people who like ugly music get excited by.  8HA lives in the middle zone between multiple musical worlds and that will always limit theaudience. People like a clear scene to associate an act with. That’s just not something I’ve ever been able to do.

9.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

Currently  I have a strict noise project called Father Fister and working on the industrial follow up to Resigner . The nosie is great because it is very fast / intuitive and I do it all to 4 track- no computers. The industrial music, while I try to limit laptop use,  it just takes forever to get it to the point where  it feels done.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I generally listen to a lot of the music that inspires what I am working on at the time and put on classical music when my ears are fried. So write now it’s industrial music Moral Order Anenzephalia semi-abstract stuff like that.  Winter is more black metal of course.   Some current bands I like are Carved Cross, Revenant Marquis, God Is War, Human Failure and Decoherence and lot of other stuff  on Sentient ruin, Caligula 031, All the lake shark tapes,  Kommodus, Burier Cerebral Rot nd always a ton of classical music . From Stockhausen to Penderecki to fucking Chopin and Schubert  I love it all.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

Learning Slavic language, nature, political action, psychology (my profession !)  and books. …. Music is generally 60 percent of what I think about

12. If you are young listen to older music if you are not listen to more current music,

Ghostbound Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?

Hello there! Since we officially finished the recording of Extended Play For My Sweet Mary Thyme, we have been relatively quiet insofar as activity is concerned. Of course, I am always working on new music in some form. In point of fact, songwriting for the next Ghostbound full-length is already well-under-way, and I may even have music for another project in the pipeline provided I do not scrap it entirely or otherwise co-opt it for use with Ghostbound. My bandmates stay busy with their own projects, as well.

2.In March you have a new album coming out, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

To be clear, it is an EP (or "mini-LP"), so there is the obvious difference of it being a lot shorter. Haha.  But in all seriousness, I view it as an "expansion pack" to All is Phantom, so the music is, on some level, a very pointed extension of the various sounds we explored on that record.  Bearing in mind that a lot of the music on both All is Phantom and this new EP stemmed from the same time period of about 2002 to 2015, and one can almost say that the songs on this EP were "left over" from AiP, and were left off that record either because they were a bit too simplistic, too samey, and/or incomplete in some way.

I daresay that the majority of the music on Extended Play was from the earlier part of that 13-year period, when I was much, much younger, and it can be argued that my abilities as a songwriter were a bit more prosaic than they are today.  For whatever reason, however, the songs stayed with me, and I realized that I could weave these songs together as a singular "suite" of music via a unifying theme. Moreover, I realized that in the relative simplicity of the music, we could really allow our love of orchestration, arrangement, and, most of all, atmosphere to take the helm and to really build AROUND the bedrock of the songs; most of the songs contain no more than three or four chords, at most, and are generally in some variation of 6/8.  At their most basic, they reminded me of the way the ocean moves as it hits the shore. A maritime, oceanic theme seemed natural.

3.While your music does contain a good amount of black metal influences you also avoid the use of any harsh vocals, are you open to adding them on future releases/

I certainly would not rule it out entirely, as I do not like to rule anything out, but I am not going to do something simply because the genre dictates that I do it.  If I were to add harsh vocals, it would have to be dictated by the atmosphere of the music or the intent of the lyric, and I am not going to shoehorn something in simply because some corpse-painted, incel dingdong feels like cleanly sung vocals are out of place over blastbeats and tremolo riffs.  The idea behind Ghostbound is that we would prefer to exist outside of easy categorization, and while we do employ elements of black metal, I wouldn't say that we are even a "metal band" in the strictest sense.  Then again, it is not really up to me in terms of how we are perceived, is it? So, in short, yes. I am open to it.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

For this new EP, I wanted the lyrics to be more "image-based" in that I wanted them to explore narrative elements that are almost entirely outside of myself.  All is Phantom, in turn, was heavily steeped in my own personal experiences. I wanted the songs on this EP to tell self-contained stories that are bolstered by the atmosphere of the music.  I looked towards sea-faring stories in addition to one specific bit of apocrypha that went into a pieta found at Highgate National Cemetery that I first heard during a tour of the place, when I was in London with my parents in 2003.  I wanted there to be a certain sense of "journey" to the music that starts out at sea and ends on land.

As a songwriter, this EP represents the earlier part of my journey, so I would not say that it is indicative of how I compose music in this day and age, necessarily.  Back when these songs were first outlined, I could pretty much only play basic chords and open-string arpeggios in the Fields of the Nephilim mold, whereas now I am decidedly more "riff-based" in my approach.  I will say, however, that this EP has taught me a lot about the use of orchestration and the joy of collaboration.  A lot of the orchestration on AiP feels somewhat "tacked-on", in hindsight, and literally every member of the band had a hand in the arrangement and orchestration of Extended Play For My Sweet Mary Thyme.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Ghostbound'?

The term "Ghostbound" was something that I made up entirely from what I believe was a misheard lyric of another band, long since forgotten.  Initially, it was merely the title of a song from an aborted attempt at a solo acoustic EP that I started working on over a decade ago. Funnily enough, the song in question would later become "And We Are Already At Sea", the lead-off track to the new EP.  I am quite fond of the name, as it represents the idea that we are all in the same boat, at the end of the day.  Death is the great unifier. Additionally, it represents something more positive, for me; I like the idea that we are all continually sailing towards a more peaceful place.  We might not get there, and the journey may be dangerous, but the idea of forward motion is very real.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The artwork was created by our good friend, Agam Neiman, who also created the lovely artwork for All is Phantom.  As this EP is meant as a new series of chapters from the same novel, as it were, I wanted the artwork to at least continue the same aesthetic.  The only difference is that All is Phantom takes place mostly on land, and Extended Play is almost entirely at sea, by design. The only instruction I gave to Agam was to focus on the color "blue" as opposed to the more verdant greens of AiP.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Ghostbound is not known to play live all that often, admittedly, as we all have day jobs and/or families, BUT we have been privileged to have played a number of good shows at Brooklyn's best metal venue, Saint Vitus, and we played one particularly fun gig in the live room of Kevin Antreassian's Backroom Studios where we were on the same level as the audience. I loved that feeling.  Our stage performance is a bit more stripped down, but we are known to "bring it" in the respect that I tend to throw myself around the stage and that every member moves to the music, in some way. I really, really hate it when bands just stand there during their live shows, so I make a point to really engage physically with the reality of whatever it is I am doing.

8.You also have done some 'Red House Painters' 'Replacements' and 'Daniel Lanios' coivers, what was the decision behind doing your own version of their songs?

In hindsight, I probably should not have listed the covers of Replacements' "Here Comes a Regular" and Daniel Lanois' "The Maker" under the Ghostbound moniker, as I did those entirely by myself with no input from any other member. In truth, I recorded those mostly as a means to teach myself how to record via my home studio, SO...I guess you can say that those two covers are "non-canon".  The Red House Painters cover was our first attempt at recording a song entirely remotely, where we all contributed our parts from our home studios.  We have since stopped promoting that song in the wake of the actions of Mark Kozelek, who has proven to be a scumbag.

On the subject of cover songs, I am of the firm belief that one should pay tribute to those who influenced one's music.  We record covers of songs that have had a direct influence on us, to be specific.  We also have a live video cover of Manic Street Preachers' "4st 7lb" which can be found via our YouTube channel.  Essentially, we like the idea of paying homage as well as introducing potential fans to new bands that would not otherwise be on their radar.  Post punk, pop, dream pop, shoegaze, and 80s "big music" is as much a part of my musical DNA as any subgenre of metal, if not moreso, and I love the idea of spreading the word about bands I love and enjoy.

9.TRhe new album is going to be released on 'Red Nebula Records', how did you get in contact with this label?

Ye Olde Booke of Faces! I simply sent them a message in an effort to see if they would be interested in putting it out, as I saw that they were releasing the rather excellent new, likewise-seafaring Foret Endormie record on vinyl. I like the cut of Reb Nebula's jib, as it were, and it was pretty evident to me early on that they would not bullshit me. There is a lot of integrity on display with Red Nebula, and I suspect that they will only grow in the future.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of post metal?

It seems as if we have accrued a modest but strong following.  Whether or not it is comprised of fans of "post metal" is anyone's guess, but the general consensus is that we are most definitely a round peg in a square hole, and I would not have it any other way.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Literally nothing ever goes to plan, but if I had my druthers, I would move us into a darker, more dissonant direction.  Somewhere between Gorguts and XTC.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what ar eyou listening to nowadays?

While I was writing the songs for the EP, I was listening to a lot of White Light From The Mouth of Infinity/Love of Life-era Swans.  Specifically, the songs "The Golden Boy That Was Swallowed By The Sea" and "Love Will Save You" were pretty direct influences on the EP.  Additionally, The Waterboys - This is the Sea had a monumental impact on the EP as a whole; Mike Scott had this way of being able to sustain tension in a two-chord song like no one else.  You might also hear a lot of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Richard Hawley, Fields of the Nephilim, Talk Talk, Echo and the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain, Alcest - Ecailles de Lune, and Ocean Machine - Biomech.  These are but a few very direct inspirations as to why I wanted to explore an oceanic theme in the music of Extended Play For My Sweet Mary Thyme.

In terms of what I am listening to now, I am a huge fan of the most recent Secrets of the Moon record, Black House.  Additionally, Dawnwalker's new record, Ages, is fantastic.  I have also been spinning Dumal - The Confessor, Anguis Dei - Angeist, Bitch Falcon - Staring at Clocks, Strega Nona - Mirrored Pink, and Boreal - The Battle of Vosad, among many, many others. I am obsessive about discovering new music.  Chances are, if the atmosphere is big and expansive, or if the band in question has a chorus pedal that they keep on at all times, it will have a place in my collection.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thank you very much for the detailed and thoughtful interview! We wholeheartedly appreciate the attention and we wish you and your readers nothing but good health and safety in these increasingly uncertain times.

Dead Bronco Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

We were supposed to have a full European tour this summer and a US/Canada tour in the fall but COVID-19 destroyed all plans, so we had to postpone our Euro tour for the summer of 2021 and we are still rescheduling our North American tour since their out break occurred later than ours so we'll see when that can happen. On a positive note, I was able to take advantage of the lock down and wrote a bunch of new material for our up coming album due in 2021, which I'm very excited to get into the studio and get that going.

2.In 2020 you have released 2 albums, musically how do they differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Dead Bronco started off as a cow punk band but since the beginning we've had numerous changes in the line up due to our tendency to tour heavily. Many people can't handle the life style of long periods of time away from home with out much of a benefit. Every time I had to bring in a new member the music would change, obviously because of the influence each one would bring to the table. I always saw DB as an aggressive dark band even if we did play country, but once we released our third album “Bedridden & Hellbound” I saw that the music we were making was very cheerful and that wasn't what I was trying to go for, so I decided to reconstruct everything and form an entirely new line up which came with “Driven By Frustration”. I was very happy with the result of the album but I was very disappointed with my band members. They were in it for the wrong reasons, thinking they would make a lot of money or get famous. They would make outrageous demands that basically bankrupted the band, that formation almost destroyed my dream and my band which I worked so hard to create. Again, I decided to throw them all to the curb and remake the band with straight up friends and create what ever came out naturally. THE ANNUNCIATION was planned as my final farewell album but I enjoyed touring and creating with these guys that I've decided to keep it going. I've upset a lot of country rockabilly people with the change, I've been threatened at shows and have had things thrown at me on stage and one dude tried to fight me calling me a “traitor”. Luckily I've lost all those closed minded finds and have made new ones in a totally different scene. I'm a lot happier now where I'm at with my music and can't wait to see where it takes me.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore wit the newer music and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

I guess you can say my lyrics are a bit darker and more violent now but they kind of have always been that way. I come from Florida from a very religious, right winged house hold where I grew up with domestic violence and the guilt of sin bestowed on everything I thought or did. I write a lot about my past and what my stepfather used to do to us and how it still affects me. Doesn't matter if the music is happy or dark sounding, I sing about my demons. I've seen how my writing has evolved over the years and I have lyrics that are better than others but I do see that what I write now is way more coherent than what I've written in previous albums. Practice makes perfect.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Dead Bronco'?

When I first arrived to the Basque Country I saw a few guys playing Johnny Cash outside of a bar and I asked them if I could play as well. They were called “Mis Amigos Me Llaman Bronco” (my friends call me Bronco), they said yes so we started playing in front of all the bars in town for free beer. The band started to gain recognition around town and I wanted to start something more serious but the singer of the band seemed like he wanted to do his cover songs forever, so I decided to go my own way and take those who were willing to make original music. Pretty much all the good members of the band decided to join me so after that the Broncos died and that is why I named the band Dead Bronco because I killed the band.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork on the newer album covers?

We worked with the Russian artist Trofimova Alina Sergeyevna who had done the art work for “ Death Roots Syndicate” out in Texas which we were featured in a few times and they were a label that promoted dark country artists and I really liked her work. I wanted to get a rootsy feel keeping true to our folk base but leaning towards a black metal cover. I think she did a great job mixing the two textures together.

6.The band has members in both the United States and Spain, how does this work out in the recording process?

I'm actually the only one from the US. I've been based out in Spain since 2008 and have been working with Spanish musicians ever since.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We've played our share of concerts over the years but I think the most memorable one was at Sziget Fest in Budapest where there were thousands of people but I think my favorite show was Tsunami Fest 2018 when we played with Bad Religion and Prodigy, the energy of the crowd was intense. I would say our stage performance is very high energy with a lot of attitude. I like to give a show that I myself would enjoy seeing and I'm very big fan of mosh pits and walls of death even though I'm trying very hard to not injure myself anymore. I've had a few accidents where I fell off the stage a few years back and broke my arm and wrist which is still giving me problems till this day.

8.The new albums where released on Sun & Moon Records, how would you compare working with this label to other labels you where a part of the past?

We've always self-released our albums except two which were released with Roots Union Records out in Nashville Tennessee but there's no comparison with Sun & Moon Records. They give complete artist freedom to create what the band wants and believes and our music is finally available world wide and reaching another type of audience which would have been more difficult to get to with out their help. I'm very happy to be part of the family.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your new recordings by fans of underground music?

We are receiving a very positive reaction. The change was a slow process and as I mentioned before we lost a lot of our fan base but gained a totally new one. Our shows are filling up with new faces and open minded people. We've also been receiving good reviews by music critics so I think over all its been good and I can't wait to finally get back on the road and show everyone what we do.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

The future is so unclear but we do have a contract with Sun & Moon for two more albums and I will always make music as long as I am alive, it's my reason of being.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I listen to a lot of different types of music but I guess the bands that have most influenced me in these last two albums have been “Those Poor Bastards”, “King Dude”, and “Capricorns”.

I love all types of music from classical, country, black metal, to cumbia. I often listen to Pergolesi and Vivaldi to start the day. I'm very big into Bethlahem, Scour, Silencer, and then I'll change it up and go to NoFx, Union 13. But I was just listening to Death in June as I was writing this.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

Surfing is basically the only thing other than music that keeps me sane and makes living life a bit more easy. Being from Florida I was born and raised on or in the water, so I need to be by the ocean to feel that I'm ok. I also enjoy cutting hair very much, I've been doing it since I was 15, even though I haven't done it in a while.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I would like to thank all those who have supported us through all the changes and ups and downs in the band and I would also like to welcome the new listeners to the family. If it wasn't for you all we wouldn't be where we are and doing what we do. Thank you!
