Lucynine Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?
Hi! Sure. I've always been a hungry listener of any genre and also as a musician and composer I've never been able to follow a single line, even if I've always been attracted by what's obscure and violent. So, after playing in many bands, I decided to put on a solo project as a multi-instrumentalist and composer that would have allowed me to work in total self-sufficiency (I'm always on the move, so it's hard for me to keep on a proper band). There comes Lucynine.

2.You have your first full length coming out towards the end of July, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
I'd say it's more sincere. It's not angry and dark because the genre wants to, but because this record tells true stories, with the right mood.

3.From 2013 to 2020 there was no music being released, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time span?
Well, no music has been released under the monicker Lucynine, but I worked on various projects with my own name. Most of all I worked on two short movies: “Block E, 4th Floor” (script, direction, music, everything apart the acting voice) and “Engine of Time” (only audio and soundtrack).

4.The lyrics on the new recording are a concept album, can you tell us a little bit more about the songwriting?
“Amor Venenat” means “Love Envenoms” in Latin. I started working on this record after I lost my husband for a cancer in 2018. We've been together for 11 years and I fell into depression and felt the need of throwing a lot of shit out of me. This album was very therapeutic in that sense... I never had an easy relationship with love sphere: born homosexual in a strict Catholic family, affairs with men much older than me, not always easy to manage, then the loss of the one I had chosen to share my life with... So I really needed to shout out a lof of regret and pain. And the concept the album is built around is a sort of portrait of me. Well, a kind of portrait of me in that very moment.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Lucynine'?
The first half of the monicker Lucynine comes both from Lucifer both from the famous song by The Beatles “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” since a psychedelic component has always been relevant in my music. Number nine is both a magical number by itself, both a “six” upside down, to remind to the Number of the Beast. It's rock'n'roll, isn't it?

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?
It's meant to include more concepts in the same picture: pain (the rope), sex/love (the man naked), but also the caducity of old age, religion (the red light reminds of vestments of a catholic cardinal). All these concepts are related to each other in the album.

7.You work mostly as a solo artist, would you be open to expanding into a full line up on future releases?
I don't think so. I could think of a band for a live situation or many featured artists on next releases, but not a band.

8.You also have a few quests on the new album, can you tell us a little bit more about who they are and also their contributions to the recording?
Sure! They all are famous actors and dubbers here in Italy (Dario Penne, for example is the Italian voice of Anthony Hopkins, Michael Caine, Tommy Lee Jones, Christopher Lloyd and many others). You see, I'm very bound to theatre, I work as a stage photographer, I collaborate with actors in many ways and most of my friends are actors too, so, since I wrote things that were meant to be spoken and not sung, I thought the best actors I knew would have been the best choice for those verses to be played.
I know that contributions could be a limitation for not Italian speaking people, but I hope their curiosity will win on this and push them to search for the meaning or... just listening to the whole album enjoying it.

9.Earlier this year you also released an ep tribute to 'Titor', what was the decision behind the tribute?
It all started as a quarantine joke and ended in a serious double single. Titor have been both dear friends of mine, both one of my favourite hardcore punk bands ever. So it came out quite naturally.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of experimental, avant garde and extreme metal?
I still have to understand it, because my 2013 EP didn't have much promotion, so “Amor Venenat” is the first time I have a serious promoting agency, a serious label, etc. Let's see what happens. I really can say I did all the best I could do.

11.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future/
I'm really insecure so I never expect too much and try to enjoy everything good happens to me. So I can't make predictions. What I really really dream is to be called for a movie soundtrack.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays/
I listen to many different genres, from classical music to jazz, from trip hop to crust punk, so it could turn into a very long reply ahahah! What I can say is that The Beatles changed my life when I was a child, Iron Maiden changed it again when I was 11, Devin Townsend when I was 16, Meshuggah when I was 18, Portishead when I was 20, and so on. In my shelves you can find from Rachmaninoff to Dark Funeral, from David Bowie to Gorillaz. These days I'm really into Bandcamp and looking for unknown good bands that do amazing things with nearly no budget. Maybe today you can discover better things from little labels or DIY scenery than among big majors. Well, maybe not only today!

13.What are some of your non musical interests?
Literature, art, cinema, all that involves expression. I myself am a photographer and videomaker, so my different jobs in music and creativity really overlap with my interests. And it's a huge privilege today.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Thank you for the time you spent with me and for your interest in what I do. I wish people will enjoy my music and find out what's behind it and maybe... pieces of real life that deserve thoughts and meditation.

Golden Blood Interview

.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Golden Blood came to life in early 2020. I was writing the debut album for Order of Ištar at that time and the songs came out a lot thrashier and heavier than I thought, so Golden Blood was born to give home to these songs.

2.Recently you have released an ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style you went for on the recording?

I didn’t have a specific genre or style in mind. I spent my early teens listening to mostly punk and hardcore and I think you can still hear that in the songs. They turned out quite catchy and don’t need a huge build up or get lost in repetitive structures.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored so far with the music?

The title track of the debut EP deals with sex & drugs and Nightfall captures the feeling of being out drunk with your crowd. So everyday life. Golden Blood is not about deep and meaningful lyrics, it’s about fun and pleasure.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Golden Blood'?

I like shiny things and I like blood. That’s it. And it has a an aristocratic vibe to it, I like that.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?

The Indonesian artist Deggeha is responsible for that. Mother Mary is torturing a demon and then has a drugged feast with her son in the other picture. There is no deeper meaning or anything open to interpretation in it. You get what you see. That applies to the music as well.

6.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?

For the writing process I prefer to work alone The album will be recorded with a drummer and a couple of guest musicians. My solo guitar abilities have definitely reached their limit. And if I find enough time and the right people, I’d love to hit the stage.

7.The ep was released on 'Witching Hour Productions', how did you get in contact with this label?

I’ve been knowing them for a while because of their work for Vader and Helheim and their huge distro. So I gave it a shot and contacted Bart and he was immediately interested in my stuff. The upcoming album will also be released by them and I’m really grateful for their work.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and thrash metal?

Mainly positive. Of course you always have people complaining about it, that it’s not true enough, the sound isn’t right and whatever. But that’s how it is, fuck ‘em.

9.Are you also involved with any other bands or musical projects?

I’m writing the debut albums for Order of Ištar and Rheingold and the first demo for Ad Victoriam right now. I’m also still working on new stuff for Der Toten Lebend Schein. All of these are more or less black metal projects. My focus is on the Golden Blood album though.

10.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

The drum recordings will begin as soon as the quarantine restrictions here in Europe are eased. I plan to finish the album in summer. There are plans of playing live, but I cannot promise anything right now.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Midnight, Deströyer 666 or Inculter are a huge influence. But also bands like Helloween, Mystic Prophecy, Primal Fear or the 90s punk bands on Fatwreck Chords. Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Savage Grace, Sortilége and Glacier. I don’t really observe the scene right now, so mostly I just discover gems from the 80s I didn’t know about.

12.Does Satanism or Occultism play any role in your music?

Yes. Both are pillars of our existence, so they are also the inspiration for everything I do.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Listen to Agazul!

Dreams  Of  The  Drowned  are  a  band  from  France  that  plays  a  mixture  of  psychedelic  avant  garde  black/gray  metal  and  anarcho  post  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2019  album  which  will  be  released  on  March  20th  by  Cult  Of  Nine  Records.

Atmospheric  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  and  after  the  first  track  the  music  goes  into  a  heavier  direction.  A  great  amount  of  dissonant  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  clean  avant  garde  style  vocals  also  being   utilized  at  times.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  grim  black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  music,  During  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

Elements  of  post  punk  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  as  well as  some  synths  also  being  utilized  at  times  Some of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  psychedelic  elements  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  music.

They  also  bring  in  a  cover  of  Dodheimsgard  "Midnattskogens  Sorte  Kjerne".  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  European  Witchcraft,  atypical  mental  states,  the  feeling  of  loss,  the  forest,  the  will  to  reclaim  long-gone  connexions  and  power  from  within,  and  the  urge  to  properly  name  and  subsequently  confront  power-overs.

In  my  opinion  Dreams  Of  the  Drowned  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  avant  garde  black/gray  metal,  psychedelic  and  anarcho  post  punk  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Conciliabules"   Real  And  Sound"  and  "Danced".  8  out  of  10.

The Promise Of Plague Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

I was previously in an industrial metal band called Empyrean Asunder. I wrote a few songs for a new release that contained a lot more black metal influence than previous material and everyone hated it. So I disbanded Empyrean Asunder and recruited new members for the more black metal inspired industrial metal style. Like Empyrean Asunder, The Promise of Plague is basically a conglomeration of every musical style that I enjoy listening to. It contains elements of black metal, industrial, goth, synth and punk.

2. You have a new album coming out in March, musically how does it differ from the recording you had released in 2016?

It sounds like a completely different band. I wasn’t fully aware of exactly how different it was until I listened to both albums side by side. There really is little comparison between the two, there’s something more emotive for sure, it’s a bit darker, maybe a little more rock added here and there. I’m not sure why it sounds so different really but from beginning to end you can only hear trace elements of the previous recording.

3.The band members have been a part of a good number of bands, what is it that you bring into the music of the band that you are not able to do with your other bands or projects?

Jim was in Abominant, Astrum, Gaebalein, Assisting Sorrow, Cataclysm and Coronach to name a few. Chris was previously with Empyrean Asunder and Psychopathy, I was with Empyrean Asunder, Fatal Step, Assisting Sorrow, Coronach, Absence of Faith, Märcoda, and Alice In The Aftermath to name a few. This is Ashley’s first recorded band.

There are no formulas to The Promise of Plague. Anything goes. With other bands there is a sound that defines the band, a tone, a way of playing, we don’t have that. Any riff that you feel, any sound that you hear, it belongs in our music.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

I guess on the surface they cover the very typical topics you’d expect. Loss, Regret, Emptiness, Despair but on a deeper level it’s a personal reflection of how I deal with those feelings. The self hatred, confusion and doubt that you experience in life and love. Many topics deal with my attempt at understanding how you can become a stranger to yourself, or how in the blink of an eye your loved ones can so quickly become that stranger. The lyrics are a delphic mass of confusion and anger and at times I’m not so sure if I’m pointing the finger at others, or at myself.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'The Promise Of Plague'?

We sail on the breeze of disease

if you had eyes even the dead could see

our hearts beat so swiftly

but we are not forever

It is derived from a section of lyrics that I wrote as the first The Promise Of Plague song. The following line was to be “This is my promise, a promise of plague” but it was cut from the final lyrics because it didn't really fit musically.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The album is titled “The Tomb Of Lost Lovers” essentially the death and remembrance of love. Not necessarily romantic love as the lyrics deal not only with romantic love, but also with the love of self, the love of ideas and the love of life, and the destruction and the loss of that love. The imagery is basically a representation of that idea. Plus I really loved the Pungent Stench “Been Caught Buttering” album cover and wanted to rip that off.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We’re a studio band but we did play a show last year as novelty. It was a local festival. We didn’t fit the bill at all but I think it went over well enough. Probably won’t play any other shows. Our other bands have played some pretty interesting shows, but this band will stay a studio project for the foreseeable future.

8. Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released ?

Not at all. I believe Jim and Ashley have a new band and they are gearing up for the studio with some possible live shows, I have 2 other projects in the works, Märcoda (electro industrial) and I may revive Empyrean Asunder (industrial metal). I might do a few shows here and there with those projects.

9.Currently the band is unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

I’m not so interested. If a label wanted to sign us and had zero expectation of me doing anything other than just writing an album here and there I’d consider it but I’m not going to dedicate myself to it, I won’t tour or play shows often.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal, punk and industrial?

I didn’t think it would go over well at all, the first release was raw black metal mixed with a good amount of punk, industrial and electro but the metal crowd seemed to enjoy it enough. Hopefully we get the same reception with this new material.

11.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Jim is working on a power metal band and has another project that is a good mix of prog rock, metal, and post-black metal called A Locust Tide. Both bands are currently in the writing / recording stage.

Ashley is a member of a variety burlesque dance and entertainment troupe Va Va Vixens, and performs with them. I’m working on the aforementioned Märcoda (electro industrial) and Empyrean Asunder (industrial metal).  Märcoda was just included in an Alfa Matrix compilation and I have 4 songs that are nearly finished for a new release and I’m kinda getting ideas together for a new Empyrean Asunder release.

12.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Don’t know really. I love Disembowelment (Australia) and I’ve always wanted to incorporate more of that style of doom into my music but it’s never really materialized while writing. I’d imagine the next release will be completely different than the previous two.

13.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I was inspired by 00’s electro/synthpop, 90’s black metal, 80’s industrial and 70’s punk. Lately I’ve been listening to Anathema, Royksopp, Peter Heppner, Cocksparrer, and Scandroid.

Jim was inspired by 80’s metal, early 90’s death metal and 90’s black metal and prog metal.

Chris is inspired by 80’s-90’s metal, Megadeth, Misfits and anything Glenn Danzig.

Ashley listens to a lot of Black Sabbath, Moody Blues, Depeche Mode, Tori Amos, Clannad, Coven, Venom, and Satyricon to name a few.

14.What are some of your non musical interests?

I’m a microbiologist and a dad so if I’m not looking at diseases I’m watching cartoons. I hike and kayak a lot as well. Jim is an amateur archeologist, an outdoorsman and a bodybuilder. Chris makes bourbon and knives (Not Nice Knives) and spends his free time with his family. Ashley researches unusual/esoteric subjects, experiments with art and makeup, and goes rock hunting for minerals, crystals and fossils.

15.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

All of my music is available online for free. So go to bandcamp, youtube or google the titles and download some free music.

Kamikaze Zombie Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?  Sure, The band started in 2014 With myself (Clint) And Damon, who at the time was the drummer. we just wanted to do something that was different than most of the shit around us at the time. We both grew up with 80's thrash/punk/hardcore and the metal bands of the 90's and we just wanted to make music we wanted to hear. lol

2.In 2017 you had released your first album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording? A Car wreck - just a nasty, heavy sound. I like music to be kind of like a tornado, you don't really know where we are going, you just gotta ride it out.

3.On the album you had a variety of many different metal styles ranging from 80's to modern era, which era of metal do you prefer to the most?  The album was based off of 80's punk/ hardcore and 90's era melvins and metal bands like, White Zombie,Slayer, Crowbar, Pantera, Sepultura Ect. and of course our gigantic love for the New Orleans music scene. Necorphagia was also a big influence. Rest in power - killjoy.

4.Your lyrics cover a lot of horror movie themes, can you tell us a little bit more about the horror films you had explored on the new album?  yeah, so I love movies as you can tell. A lot of our song titles are movie titles. lyrics I use metaphors most of the song are about real life shit, with horror movies and other sifi themes to express the real life emotions in the songs. The song "The Stone Giant"  I used the movie: "Daimajin"  its a japanese horror film from the 60's to its about, a Giant stone statue that guards the gates of hell comes to life to protect japan. I also, used my favorite book "Moby Dick" on this one. Other songs, I use werewolves, Satan, though with Satan- its never about him, just Satan is the great antagonist. 1226 and Death Rides A horse. both are real life monsters. 1226 is about the Chinese Cultural Revolution, that shit is worse than horror movie you could imagine. Death Rides A Horse ( one of my favorite western) is about the Mason Murders. "Manhunter" and "The Story Of Jane Doe" are Mirror's of each other.  Silence of the lamb and ManHunter are the movies I pull from.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Kamikaze Zombie'? It means nothing. That was the point. I wanted a name that was just Weird but cool. Something we could make whatever. KZ was it!! the idea of a Zombie being a kamikaze was absurd to me, I couldn't stop laughing. We originally were going to be "The Crude Mutants" so we kept it to describe or fans and ourselves. So now we are Kamikaze zombie - "the Crude Mutants"  but with Kamikaze Zombie- I really make a conscience effort not to have anything to Kamikaze Japan, I try to steer clear of all of that, shit. lol

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance? Ok, Best shows? Last year at Full Terror Assault 3 was pretty fucking rad!!  We have been lucky enough to play with a lot of the bands we look up too, which RULES. But some of small local shows that just come together can be some of the best.  Stage performance - We are in the works to scale up the stage stuff. we want movies and crazy shit going on the background. We also try to have samples from the albums live. I hate to hear a album then live it's completely different. but, also with us. Steve and Myself, especially. we like the show to be fun and light hearted. I get tired of seeing night after night of dudes coming out beating their chest and all. So we just come out telling jokes and cutting up. keeping it fun. We let the music speak for itself.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future? YES!! we have two tours booked this summer with our friends in HailShot. We are going Cost to Cost. We start in denver, Co and end in Savannah, GA . other than that. We play with Eye Hate God in a few days. We have a couple of festivals we are in the works to play. which will takes us through the rest of the summer. Then come September we hit the road again. Gonna go North after that tour. We come home and start work for our next Album. We start recording back at LedBelly December 2018 and that is our plan for this year.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest? YES!! We are definitely looking. We are in talks with a smaller but very cool label now. but We gotta keep it under the hat for now. One of our major goals is HouseCore Records. that would be a dream come true. But we will see where the road takes us.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of extreme metal?  Actually and quite honestly -surprisingly we have been getting a lot of great feedback from Europe!!! which rules. So I've been trying to push that interest. Who knows? we may get froggie enough to jump across the pound in the next year or so...We will see.

10.What is going on with the other bands or musical projects these days that the drummer is a part of?  Lol I don't really keep up with them. to be honest. I just focus all my time on KZ. everything else, is none of my business.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?  We have 8- or 9 songs in the works now, for the new album. I can tell you. They are more trashy than this album. but they are also, heavier and lean on grindcore stuff .. but its still very much KZ. We haven't deviate that much from Night Of The Nuberus". But, we will let you guys decide.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Black Flag, Minor Threat, The Bad Brains, Celtic Frost, CrowBar, SuperJoint, Slayer, White Zombie, Pantera,The Melvins, Gwar, Goatwhore, Acid Bath, Suicidal Tendencies, Metallica, The Misfits and about a million others have all influenced us.  Currently There are two bands that I love to death. the Band Child Bite. which I am lucky to call my friends. The have some amazing tunes. I jam their stuff on the daily, A fun fact - Shawn knight of Child Bite, did our album cover. Dude is a super talented dude. The other band I cant seem to get enough of is Us Bastard. I'll jam their album for like a week straight. Just really good shit!! My buds in Against the grain and Hailshot also have great tunes out right now, that are worth checking out.

13.What are some of your non musical interests?  None music.I teach 8 step preying mantis kung fu, I love drawing and then of course horror movies, comic books.I screen print all of our KZ's shirts and Im a massage therapist for my day job.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts? Yeah, thank you for you time. thanks to all our Crude mutants for their support and check us out at www.kamikazezombie.com - See you on the road.

Frost Giant Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?

Matti Frost: Trying to get the lineup solidified and rehearsing for the release and subsequent shows. We lost our bassist a couple months ago, and the person we asked to join up immediagely after said yes but then backed out, so now we're in the process of auditioning people. We are also rehearsing the new songs and gearing up to play them live. It will be the first time we've played onstage since May of 2015.
**************
2.You have a new album coming out in early 2018, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Matti: The sound is something I would describe as being rooted in extreme metal but also marbled with accessible riffing and tons of hooks, melodies, and choruses that are meant to be sung along with. It's multi-dimensional and dynamic with a lot of different emotions, and there are many parts of songs directly written to reference other songs or interludes on the album. It's meant to be listened to as one long song, like NOFX's 'The Decline' or Sleep's 'Jerusalem', and most recently, Insomnium had a record called 'Winter's Gate' that has the same type of structure.

As to how it compares with our older stuff... It's definitely more ambitious. The riffs are stronger. The vocal arrangements are more intricate. The guitar soloing is much more present. The production and recording quality are monstrous compared to our older releases. AJ Viana at Sylar Sound Studios really made us sound phenomenal. Overall, it's much more mature and pretty strong for a 55-minute release.
***************
3.A lot of your lyrics are inspired by Norse Mythology, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic and also what are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects you explore with your music?

Matti: I've been into Norse mythology going back to my childhood. The gods and goddesses, the stories and sagas of all the heroes and the people, all of it was very fascinating to me. I was also a fan of the Greek, Roman, and Celtic pantheons too. These tales were way more entertaining to me than the Bible stories I had learned, although the Old Testament is pretty brutal too from a storytelling perspective. Yet, I've never been particularly religious. Even as a kid I was skeptical about the existence of a literal God that watches over everything you do and keeps a list and will one day spend eternity judging the souls of the dead for what they did in life. It seemed a little unrealistic to me. When I started learning about the reconstructed religion and practice of Ásatrú, I was roped in, at first, like many others. It was around this time I got into a deep interest around the Ancient Norse, Vikings, and history of those peoples. Now, I am not a hardcore scholar, and there are few religions that have a stronger basis in research than Ásatrú. It's been called "the religion with homework". I did come out of my "metal dude into Thor" phase, though, and I like to think that in my 11 or so years of being Heathen I have a more nuanced and practical view of it in a modern context.

A lot of the other topics I deal with are allegorical references to the experiences and journey I've had in my life. The Harlot Star is, if you take the lyrics literally, a priest in the 1500's who cannot reconcile his doubts about Christianity, rejects the Church, flees for his life, tries to find the gods and people his ancestors came from, fails, and yet somehow stumbles into the rest of his life. In reality it reflects my own spiritual journey, and the second half of my life is yet to be written.
***************
4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Frost Giant'?

Matti: I first discovered what frost giants were when I started reading Norse myths. Then there was Dungeons & Dragons in my teens, and they were pretty formidable monsters. Primal, destructive forces of nature, wild and untamed, powerful and mighty, and fearsome. When I decided to name the band Frost Giant I was also rather surprised that it wasn't taken. That's always a plus.
*****************
5.What are some of the best shows that yo have played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Matti: Our very first show in October of 2012 was with Agalloch. We have also had some great gigs playing with Korpiklaani, Ensiferum, Turisas, Wilderun, Trollfest, Ignite, Bane, Aether Realm, Swashbuckle, as well as many other local and regional bands. I don't actually know how we look onstage. I'm always more concerned with making sure I am playing decently and not singing out of key. Armen (Korohglian, also of Cognitive) and Ty Asoudegan are new to the band but have amazing energy, and Scott Breustedt has always had excellent stage presence. How we are onstage remains to be seen.
*****************
6.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

Matti: Yes, as of now we only have a couple of shows booked, but that will change once the album comes out. We're going to shoot for playing in different areas, choosing our shows carefully so as not to overexpose ourselves in one area or venue, and possibly some weekend trips or a week long tour in Spring or early Summer.
****************
7.The new album is coming out on 'Transcending Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Matti:. I knew nothing about the label until my friend sent me a message saying that they were looking for albums to release. I sent Mike (Ramirez) the video for 'Prisoner of the Past' and a link to the whole album and he really liked it and made us an offer. It was a good deal, so we signed it. The label itself has a broad mix of bands, from death metal and deathcore to doom and sludge, to shoegaze, to desert rock and melodic black metal. Some of my favorite artists on the roster are Transylvania Stud, Grief & Bliss, Monolith Cult, and Vesperian Sorrow. There are many more bands on Transcending I haven't heard yet. It's a very diverse roster, and Mike & Chase (Brown) have done a lot of us and the other bands. We can't say enough good things about Transcending Records.
**************
8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of melodic and extreme metal?

Matti: We have had some positive feedback in the past from European fans, but outside of a few good reviews of our old EP and maybe an interview or two, not much else. We didn't know how to really promote our music to international markets back then and we are really just learning about it now. It seems that the heart of extreme metal is in other countries besides the United States. That's not to say there aren't amazing fans of extreme metal here, but not as many per capita compared to other countries. It seems like metal is just more popular overseas. We're hoping to hear more feedback from international audiences and possibly tour in Europe.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Matti: As the main songwriter, I've always held that whatever I write under this band name will be whatever I want. Whatever sounds good to my ears. However, I now have a pretty amazing band to work with. These guys have way too much talent and skill for me to just say here, play this. Future writing might still be based on my ideas but the actual writing will probably be much more collaborative. As far as genres and styles, I have ideas for music that is far heavier, and music that is way more ear friendly. Whatever it is, it will still sound like us, though.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Matti: Wintersun amd early Ensiferum were the bands that got me serious about starting up a band that was sort of in that genre. Jari Mäenpää just has a way of writing that really appeals to me. I'd also add in a ton of skatepunk, melodic hardcore, and post-hardcore. Bands like NOFX, Strung Out, Lagwagon, MxPx, Grade, Small Brown Bike, Tyr, Avail, Lifetime, Ignite, Devin Townsend Project, Hum... So many different bands, and yet, there's a common thread to all of them that I've found.

I've been listening to a lot of non-metal bands lately, anything from 80's new wave and alt rock to modern indie rock. A few of the bands I've been really into are Strand of Oaks, Cigarettes After Sex, The War on Drugs, and Future Islands.

11.According to your fb page some of your non musical influences include Game Of Thrones,  Dragonlance,  Deverry and Ancient History, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in thse topics?

Matti: I love to read and I love fantasy. In my opinion, the Deverry novels by Katharine Kerr are the most amazing Celtic fantasy books I've ever read, and I've read all of the books multiple times. I have not read all of the George R.R. Martin books yet but I am caught up on the HBO series. I go way back to my teens with Dragonlance by Weis & Hickman and other authors that have written for that world setting. I've read most of those too, many times. I have the Solamnic Oath tattooed on my chest. So... I am a bit of a fantasy literature geek. I frequently reference concepts and character archetypes from many of these books, and the song 'Silver Dagger' is written about a band of mercenaries featured all throughout the Deverry novels. Actual history has been a big influence too. The Harlot Star was a term that Martin Luther used to refer to comets back in the 16th century, as they threw a wrench in the application of geocentricity. Their paths across the sky, their orbits, didn't make sense to astronomers who were trying to make them fit in a cosmos where everything revolved around the Earth. They defied the divine order of the heavens. That term alone spawned and inspired the whole story told on this album. The comet, specifically Halley's Comet, is what plays the seed of doubt in the protagonist's mind as a young child, and then it's sort of hinted that he sees it 76 years later when he is on his deathbed and the comet returns and brings his life full circle.
