Lucynine/Amor Venenat/Inverse Records/2020 CD Review

 Lucynine  is  a  solo  project  from  Finland  that  plays  a  mixture  of  post  black,  sludge,  doom  metal, punk,  crust,  hardcore,  darkwave  and  experimental  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "Amor  Venenat"  which  will  be released  in  July by  Inverse  Records.

   Music  and  spoken  word  samples start off  the  album  before  going  into  a   very  fast  musical  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking.Vocals  are  mostly grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  Keyboards  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  at  times.

   All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  some  tracks  also  bring  in  clean  singing  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  elements  of  post  rock  and  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  and  doom  metal.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  noisy  style  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Spoken  word  parts  also  make  a  return  on  some  of  the  later  tracks  as  well  as  the  music  also  having  its  experimental  moments  and  some  tracks  show  an  influence  of  darkwave.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  sounding  as  well  as  some  tracks  also  adding  in  some  touches  of  post  punk,  crust  and  hardcore  and  all  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other,  death  metal  growls  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  as  the  album  progresses  psychedelic  and  blues  rock  elements  can  also  be heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  upon  the  darkest  and  most  negative  sides  of  love.

  In  my  opinion  Lucynine  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  post  black,  sludge,  doom  metal,punk,  crust,  hardcore,  darkwave  and  experimental,  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "-Nine  Eleven"  "Things  I'll  Never  Know"  "White  Roses"  and  "Everyone  O  Lovedis  Dead". 8out  of  10.

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

A. - The R.O.T.S.W. project start in 2019. At that time all of us are involved in our strictly esoteric black metal project called Nurmur. We decided to put our force and dedication into a new entity, where our musical attitude and styles will not be caged into a specific genre/scene. The mission: explore meditative sound and turn them into furious vehemence.

2.So far you have released an ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style you went for on the recording?

A. - A dark mixture of our influences/style put together to match the lyrical concept. Crust/d-beat drum pattern and Black-Death metal riffs to give a violent ripetitive-obsessive texture and furious, low and not so clean vocals.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

A. - The main lyrical topic is simple yet ambitious: the eternal climb to the one's self Holy Mountain, and the risk of failure that a quest like this can involve.
In fact, this EP is dedicated to Emilio Salgari, a famous Italian writer of the past century who has write hundreds of book describing in details places and territory he never visited. A man with a powerful and limitless mind. In the same powerful way he ended his life with Seppuku. The ritual suicide.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Rise Of The Stateless Wolf'?

A. - After thousands of years of migration under persecution, the wolf is indeed a stateless animal. Driven by his instinct of survival, that made him the antithesis of the modern man...let's celebrate him, he didn't surrender!

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?

A. - The Elephant's head with a broken tusk...will forever be our animal guide. In the induistic tradition he represent the instinct of survival, destruction of obstacles, equilibrium, an archetipe full of simbolic meanings. To put him on our first cover art was more mandatory than natural.

6.Has the band had any opportunities to do any live shows yet?

F. - We had to do our first concert in May, but due of Covid-19 virus that is scourging our country, everything is postponed.
We will be ready when the time comes.

7.The ep was released on 'Italian Extreme Underground', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

F. - Italian Extreme Underground is my DIY label/distro. Born in 2014 as a Facebook page (still active), it turned into a label/distro a few years later and has a dozen releases.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black, sludge metal and hardcore?

F. - We are trying to get our music out of Italy, at the moment we don't have much feedback from abroad. But those few we have, they have been positive.

9.When  can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

F. - After this EP is it worth considering the idea of doing a full-length? We do not know this.
When we meet after this quarantine period we will think about the path that our project will take.
Musically we set no limits. We take every source of inspiration and even this dark moment of our life will help us, especially for the lyrics.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

A. - Musically speaking, our main influences are the Crust/D-beat fury of acts like Discharge and Wolfpack; the lyrical and atmospheric exploration of Inquisition and few other Black Metal band, the old-school thrash and death metal scene, particulary the album Schizophrenia from Sepultura and the complete discography of Bolt Thrower. Godflesh and Mysticum for the use of drum machine. And some neo folk act like Death in June and Current 93.

A. - Read, study, meditate and training for the end.

  Rise  Of  The  Stateless  Wolf  are  a  band  from  Italy that  plays  a  mixture  of  black, sludge  metal and  hardcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  ep  "Born  Dead/Year  Of  The  Rats" which  was  released  by  Italian  Extreme  Underground.

  Dark  sounding  synths  start  off  the  ep  before  adding  in  a  very  powerful  sounding  bass  guitar  while  the  slower  riffing  brings  in  elements  of  sludge  metal.  Vocals  are  mostly  blackened  metal  screams  along  with  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  showing  an  influence  of  hardcore.

  Dark  sounding  melodies  can  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  music  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats.  The  songs  also  bring  in  a  good  mixture  of  both  modern  and  old  school  influences  along  with  some  touches  of  crust  punk  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  finally  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  chaotic  style and  spoken  word parts,  demonic  voices  and  acoustic  guitars  are  also  added  on  the  closing  track.

  Rise  Of  The  Stateless  Wolf  plays  a  musical  style that takes black  sludge  metal,  crust  and  hardcore  and  mixes them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  spiritual  and  death  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding recording  from  Misanthropic  Aggression  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  doom,  death,  thrash  metal,  d  beat  and  crust,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Blacklisted".  8  out  of  10.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Serpent  Eater  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  sludge,  death  metal,  crust  and  hardcore,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Echo  Chamber"  "Hypnos"  and  "Lurking  Fear".  8  out  of  10.

Charlene Beretah/Ram/Division Records/2019 CD Review

  Charlene  Beretah  are  a  band  from  Switzerland  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  sludge,  doom  metal  and  crust  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "Ram"  which  will  be  released  on    November  8th  by  Division  Records.

  Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  horror  movie  samples  also  being  used  briefly  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also h ave  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  and  doom  metal.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  screams  are  very  heavily  rooted  in  black  metal.  During  the  mid  tempo  sections  influences  of  crust  punk  can  be  heard  as  well  as  the  music  also  adding  in  some  stoner  and  southern  metal  touches  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  when  the  music  speeds  up.

Misanthropic Aggression Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

This is the latest step in my lifetime of music creation. I am currently 35 years old and this is the seventh band I've written original music and recorded with. People who knew me before this band knew me as a drummer. I only moved to bass and vocals as a way to push myself and after meeting Tyler, who is only 20 years old and drumming at a way higher caliber than I was at his age. When Chris first decided to commit to the band I was playing drums and he was on guitar. Our two song demo from 2017 only features he and I. Chris engineers everything in our practice room, and on that recording I played bass, drums and did the vocals. Chris played guitar and engineered the sessions. When Tyler joined we decided to write an EP and push hard for Boris Records to release it. Chris works for the label, my old band Spewtilator had two releases on BR, and it just seemed like a natural DiY / Independent move. So we worked very hard for seven months on the material and spent another two months tracking it. Now here we are.

2.Recently you have released an ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style you went for on this recording?

We established a few major ground rules. C tuning so everything we had would be low and heavy. Always black metal shrieks or death metal lows for vocals. Intensity and energy in everything. Other than that there are no rules on metal sub genres. We try to keep it black and I consider us a black metal band. We just add elements of thrash, death, doom and punk. The 80's in Europe were extremely fascinating to me. Between Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Venom, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Sodom, Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror, Amebix etc. the major bases of Traditional Heavy Metal, First Wave Black Metal and Grind / Crust Punk are all covered.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

Social unrest, depression, anger, mental illness. I feel like we're living in an age where everyone feels extremely tribalistic and there's a lot of bad attitudes and shitty people who love to mistreat others. I just found myself getting so fucking pissed off every day I needed to express my frustration and rage. I don't feel like I'm alone in feeling fed up, forgotten about, and just generally pissed most of the time. A lot of times my lyrics come from a first person perspective but I'm not writing from my point of view, I'm writing from the point of view of that stupid prick in traffic that just cut you off and gave YOU the finger or the asshole holding up the line on purpose getting lottery when they can tell people are in a hurry. It's the age of anonymous trolling and everyone hates everyone who isn't exactly like them.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Misanthropic Aggression'?

The rage I feel at hating man kind so much, and the struggle I feel on a daily basis not to assault people and be locked in a cage.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?

I like guns, I have a few guns, but let's be honest America is obsessed with them. It's a man sacrificed to the alter of the gun. It was drawn by Warhead Art out of Eastern Europe. He caught my eye from my old friend Kael from the so-cal war metal band Wearg, Cavemancult from Miami and Berator from Chicago (Richard and Adam are from my hometown and we go back over a decade) and I love his style. he was nice enough to do a commission piece for us and I asked him to move away from his traditional medieval style. It came out really well. Sam Leyja (Boris Owner and founder) did the layout and I'm really pleased with how it came out.

6.Originally the band was a solo project, what was the decision behind forming a full line up?

I feel like I'll be playing music until the day I die, and as a drummer you always seem to get chewed up and spit out. Always seem to be getting used to make someone else's dream a reality, but at some point things don't work out and you're no longer in the band that wouldn't have been established without you, and you have very little to show for it. I finally decided I would start my own band no one could ever take away. I hope Chris and Tyler never stop playing with me but if they did I would keep the band going. It was like once I freed myself of the burden of being a team player and decided to be selfish I meet this extremely healthy group with Chris and Tyler and don't have to be selfish. It's working out really well.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Probably our Athens, Ga debut with Cloak (more old friends Scott and I go back a decade) it was a huge crowd and a room full of people who have never seen us. We go for intensity and energy live. I go out of my way to head bang and thrash. Black metal is war and even though we aren't a traditional bm band I intended to try to manifest violence, even if it's only against my own body. We have only played 4 shows so far but that is my favorite.

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

Yes we are open to offers. We are close to announcing a Charlotte show and we are networking to try to get a 9 day run up to NYC and Philly next year. We plan to keep this band active as long as we can.

9.On the ep you had also done an S.S.D cover, what was the decision behind doing your own version of one of their songs?

I love a lot of 80's hardcore, and to me even though that band isn't metal at all, they personified violence and rage on that song. The lyrics feel like something I would write. So at practice one day we were fucking around and tried it in C standard and added a blast beat to the chorus. It sounded violent as fuck so we went for it.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of underground metal?

I guess like anything some people love us and some think we suck. The punk sound of our music throws a lot of elite black metal guys for a loop. If a dbeat is good enough for Celtic Frost it's good enough for me. If you wanna see me be stupid give me a bottle of whiskey and put on Morbid Tales. I don't think my DNA can allow me to NOT head bang and start single man moshing when Into Crypts of Rays comes on.

11.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Now that the EP is done we are not slowing down. I'm already into writing a second song, and Chris and Tyler both have ideas too. We're going to let Inability To Cope run it's course for at least a year, and play as many shows in as many cities as possible. We'll probably wait until Boris has enough money for us to do a legit 12" to record again though. We are open to split or comp offers though and would be interested in recording for them if any offers came in. Musically we plan to progress. we're doing what we're doing now but there's nothing to say we won't go more grim in the future. We also love a lot of Goregrind like Impetigo and Lord Gore / Frightmare / Bloodfreak those Portland guys kill it. So really who knows. No rules, as long as it's heavy as fuck and fast. No bullshit vocals either.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Biggest influence on me is Darkthrone. People love to take shots at them because they're the face of black metal, but they have the most dynamic and prolific discography of pretty much anyone. From Soulside Journey to Arctic Thunder those guys just write and do what they want, no matter who thinks or says what. Also Peter Steele and Carnivore / Type O Negative, his sense of black humor was the best. I identify strongly with him. Also Celtic Frost, their first two albums are amazing but Monotheist is one of the most crushing and depressing albums I had ever heard. I guess I wanted this band to be dynamic and not afraid to be unconventional. As much as I love Judas Iscariot I don't guess I would ever want to play "grim" black metal. Not talking any shit at all about the pure black metal bands. I'm kinda rambling now but also Demoncy. Robert is from my hometown and we have a lot of mutual friends, some how I had never seen them live until last year. They played Mass Destruction Metal Fest and they were so fucking heavy. The old shitty recordings they have are great, but live they sounded louder and heavier than a lot of doom bands I've seen. Really inspiring.

13.What are some of your non musical interests?

I have an almost 5 year old son and wife so a lot of time with them. I'm a PC gaming nerd. You can catch me playing video games a lot more than I should admit. Our song Respite is about how I'm anti social and I don't wanna do anything but sit at home in my basement.

Agrimonia Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the mew album?
Pontus: Since the recording, we haven't done so much musically. We did a few shows and spent time on the artwork and such. It's a limbo-like situation, having the new album recorded but not being able to present it to the world yet!



2.You have a new album coming out this month, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
Pontus: It's hard to describe your own music, but to put it simple: I think it's a very good sounding and epic metal album with progressive influences and a crusty backbone. Lots of dynamics and emotions. Words doesn't do it justice, however, as with all good music! Compared to our earlier stuff, I think this is our most fully realized album in terms of songwriting, emotional dynamics, and aural impact.



3.This is your first album in 5 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time span?
Christina: I have opened a vegan restaurant with some friends, made songs and played a lot of shows with my other band Contorture. Most of us are busy with other bands when we dont do Agrimonia things.
Pontus: With Agrimonia, we've done a few tours and shows. Then we've been busy with other stuff, both musical and non-musical. The rollercoaster that is life!



4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music?

Christina: I tend to write about injustices in the world, big and small things that happens around me and about things I think is wrong in the world. It can be social issues or mistreatment of the earth and the people living in it.



5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Agrimonia''?
Christina: Agrimonia is a plant and has a long history of medicinal use. It has been know as an an "all-heal" and has been used to heal everything from wounds to liver problems and also as a witch's cure. When we started Agrimonia we just liked the name and didn´t really have a meaning behind it.





6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Christina: I get really into the songs when we play so I dont think I have a plan of my stage performance. I just go with the music and the words. I think we all have different ideas of the best shows we played and so much can be included in that question. It is hard to answer! I really like playing places where I have friends in the audience.
Pontus: I enjoyed the release show for the last album, where we played the whole album from start to finish live. To me, a great show is when the energy is shared between us and the audience. As for stage performance, that is something I don't think we've ever thought so much about. For me it's finding that energy and connection to the music.



7.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?
Christina: We have a release party planned here in Göteborg on March 23:rd.
Pontus: I will be on paternal leave until the fall so we won't tour until then. We'll see what happens!



8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black, sludge and post metal?
Pontus: It's been good.  We've been fortunate enough to play a lot of places with great receptions. Reviews, especially for this new album, are really nice!



9.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?
Christina: I play bass in a d-beat band called Contorture. We are currentle working on our second full lenght album and we are recoring it at Studio D-takt in Uppsala at the end of March. We are also heading out on a tour of eastern and south eastern Europe in March.
Pontus: Me and Björns other band Miasmal is slowly getting back on track since we got a new bass player a few months ago. Martin is very busy with At the Gates, they just recorded a new album and will probably do a lot of shows this summer when their new album is out.



10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Pontus: I'd like to think we will not stray far from our core sound, but rather evolve it.



11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Christina: I think that a band that we all can agree on is Bolt Thrower. Personally as a singer my influences has been women who growls in bands, like Agnes from the polish band Lost. I listen a lot to Bolt Thrower, SubRosa, Misantropic, Windhand and JexThoth for example.
Pontus: Bolt Thrower, Sisters of Mercy, Dinosaur Jr, PJ Harvey, Neurosis, early Metallica. Both influences (however subconscious) and recent listening.



12.What are some of your non musical interests?
Christina: I am so busy with work right now so I do not really have so much spare time. When I am not at work I like to relax with a book or a tv-series, have beers with friends or watch a movie.
Pontus: Books, documentaries, family life and beer.

  Agrimonia  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  sludge,  post  metal  and  crust  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Awaken"  which  will  be  released  on  January  26th  by  Southern  Lord  Recordings.

  Atmospheric  yet  heavy  riffing  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodies  and  elements  of  post  metal  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  leads  as  well  as  a  great  amount  of  black  metal  influenced  screams  and  clean  singing  and  death  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  Most  of t he  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  slow  riffs  are  very  heavily  influenced  by  sludge  and  doom  metal  along  with  some  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars  and  synths  and  as  the  album  progresses elements  of  crust  can  also  be  heard  in  the  mid tempo  sections  of  the  songs.

  Agrimonia  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black,  sludge,  post  metal  and  grindcore  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Agrimonia  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  sludge,  post  metal  and  crust  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Astray"  and  "The  Sparrow".  8  out  of  10.

  Coilguns  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  sludge,  noise,  d  beat  and  grindcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  album  "Millenials"  which  will  be  released  in  2018  by  Hummus  Records.

  Dark  yet  melodic  and  heavy  riffing  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  drum  beats  a  few  seconds  later  awhile  the  angry  vocals  bring  in  touches  of  sludge  and  black  metal  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  Elements  of  post  hardcore  and  noise  rock  can  also  be  heard  in  the  music  at  times  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  bring  in  elements  of  d  beat  and  grindcore  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  musical  gets  more  experimental  and  the  songs  also  bring  in a   decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and fast  parts.

  Coilguns  plays  a  musical style  that  takes  black  metal,  sludge,  noise  rock,  post  hardcore,  d  beat,  grind  and  experimental  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cove  dark and  philosophical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Coilguns  are  a  very  great  sounding  experimental  mixture  of  black  metal,  sludge,  grind,  d  beat,  noise  rock  and  post  hardcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Anchorite"  "Spectogram"  "Self  Employment  Scheme"  and  "The  Screening".  8  out  of  10.

Pink Mass/Necrosexual/2017 Full Length Review

 Pink  Mass  are  a  band  from  New  Jersey  that  plays  a  blackened  mixture  of  crust  and  grindcore  with  a  touch  of  punk  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2017  album  "Necrosexual".

  A  horror  movie  soundtrack  orientated  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  fast  grind  and  crustcore  direction  along  with  some  blast  bears  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  black  metal s creams  as  well  as  some  death  metal  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  short  in  length.

  A  small  amount  of  melody  can  be  heard  in  some  of  the  riffing  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  songs  also  bringing  in a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  melodic  guitar  leads  can  also  be  heard  and  another  track  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  and  spoken  word  samples  and  some  songs  also  mix  in  elements  of  punk  rock  and  doom  metal.

  Ledge  are  a  solo  project  from  Chicago,  Illinois  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  sludge,  doom  metal,  power  violence  and  hardcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2017  album  "Cold  Hard  Concrete"  which  will  be  released in  August  as  a  joint  effort  between  Translation  Loss  records,  and  Hibernation  Release.

  Hardcore  style  riffing  and  angry  shouting  vocals  start  off  the  album  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  being  very  heavily  influenced  by  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  During  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  a  great  amount  of  black  metal,  power  violence  and  d  beat  elements  can  be  heard  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  spoken  word  parts  are  also used  briefly  and  one  track  also  adds  in  elements  of  harsh  noise  and  the  music  always  remains  brutal  with  no  solos  or  leads  ever  being  utilized.

  Ledge  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black,  sludge,  and  doom  metal  and  mixes  them  with  hardcore  and  power  violence  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  violent,  angry,  and  hateful themes.

  In  my  opinion  Ledge  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  sludge,  doom  metal,  power  violence  and  hardcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Blacked  Out"  "Fuck  Yourself"  and  "Contempt".  8  out  of  10.

  Body  Void  are  a  band  from  San  Francisco  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  doom  and  sludge  metal  with  touches  of  noise  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Ruins"  which  will  be  released  on  January  31st  as  a  joint  effort  between  Crown  &  Throne  Ltd  and  Dry  Cough  Records.

  Atmospheric  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  the  music  going  into  a  heavier  doom  metal  direction  a  few  seconds  later  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  the  vocals a re  high  pitched  screams  that  mix  black  metal  and  sludge  together  and  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  melody  at  times.

 All  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  elements  of  crust  punk  are  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  with  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  elements  of  noise  are  also  utilized  at  times  and  one  of  the  tracks  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  samples  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  fashion.

  Deadwound  are  a  band  from  The  United  Kingdom  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  doom,  sludge, d  beat, and  hardcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  ep  "Identity  Shapes"  which  was  released  by  Black  Bow  Records.

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  from  Germany's  Ill  Neglect  and  Italy's  Lambs called  "Trisma"  which  was  released  by  Drown  Within  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Ill Neglect  a  band  that  plays  a  mixture  of  sludge  and  grindcore.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  spoken  word  samples  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  and  when t he  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  screaming  vocals  can  be  heard  while  also  adding  in  touches  of  crust,  d  beat  and  grindcore  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  are  influenced  by  sludge  and  post  hardcore  and  death  metal  growls  are  added  onto t he  second  track,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  angry themes.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  heavy  sound  where  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  their  recording  while  the  vocals  are  high  pitched  screams  that  also  add  in  a  touch  of  black  metal  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  songs  also  mix  in  a  lot  of  sludge  and  crust  influences  while  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  spoken  vocals  are  influenced  by  post  hardcore  and when  solos  and  leads a re  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  angry  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Lambs  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  sludge,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Unfeeling".

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  black  metal,  sludge  and  grindcore.  8  out  of  10.

Fange/Purge/Lost Pilgrims Records/Throatruiner Records/2016 CD Review

  Furge  are  a  band  from  France  that  is  mostly  rooted  in  sludge  metal  while  also  having  elements  of  d  beat  and death  metal  and  with  their  newer  music  they  start  mixing  it  in with  more  of  a  black  metal  style  and this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Purge"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Lost  Pilgrims  Records  and  Throatruiner Records.

  A  very  dark  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later  while  the  guitar  riffing  also  brings  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  after  awhile  death  metal  growls  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  all  of t he  musical  instruments  bring  in a  very  powerful  sound.

  When  the  music  speeds  up a   great  amount  of  crust  and  d  beat  elements  can  be  heard  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic in  length  and  you  can  also hear  the  influence  of  90's  Swedish  death  metal  in  the  bands  musical  style  and  the  music  sticks  to  mostly  a  slow  or  mid  paced  direction  while  also  having  its  fast  moments  and  some  songs  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.

  Fange  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  sludge  metal  sound  of  previous  releases  while  also  mixing  in  more  black  metal  influences  this  time  around,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  dark  and  angry  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Fange  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  sludge  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Machefer"  and  "Girone  Della  Merda".  8  out  of  10.

Okkultokrati/Snake Reigns/Night Jerks/Southern Lord Recordings/2016 CD Review

  Okkultokrati  are  a  band  from  Norway  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  sludge,  d  beat,  crust,  hardcore  and punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  compilation  which  contains  the  "Snake  Reigns"  album  I  reviewed  in  2012  and  their  2014  album  "Night  Jerks"  which  was  released  in  May  by  Southern  Lord  Recordings.

  A  crust  punk  style  sound  starts  off  the  compilation  along  with  some  d  beats  and aggressive  non  melodic  punk  vocals  and  all  of the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  the  music  slows  down  elements  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  can  be  heard  and  after  awhile  grim  black  metal  screams  make  their  presence  known  on  the  recording.

    Throughout  the  compilation  you can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  on  some songs  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars  can  be  heard  while  some  of  the  heavier  riffs  are  very  heavily  influenced  by  Motorhead  along  with  a  touch  of  first  wave  black  metal  and  when  solos  and  leads  are  added  into  the  music  they  add  in  more  of  an  early  80's  metal/punk  feeling  to  the  songs  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  intro  on  the  second  album  has  a  horror  movie  feeling  while  the  rest  of  the  music  sticks  to  a  heavy  style  and  they  close  the  recording  with  a  horror  move  soundtrack  style  instrumental.

   On  both  of  these  recordings  Okkultokrati  take  first  and  second  wave  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  sludge,  doom  metal, crust,  d  beat  and  hardcore  to  create  something  very  original,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  yet heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Darkness  and  Drug  themes.

     On  both  of  these  recordings  Okkultokrati  take  first  and  second  wave  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  sludge,  doom  metal, crust,  d  beat  and  hardcore  to  create  something  very  original,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  yet heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Darkness  and  Drug  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  compilation  from  Okkultokrati  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal,  doom,  sludge,  crust,  d  beat  and  hardcore  punk,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "No  Ouroboros"  "I  Thought  Of  Demons"  "We  So heavy"  and  "Moon  Dagger".  8  out  of  10.

 This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between Canada's Dark  Circles  and  California's  Abstracter  which  was  released  by  as  a  joint  effort  between  Halo of Flies Records, L'Oeil Du Tigre Records, Sick Man Getting Sick Records, Moment of Collapse, and Shove Records  and we start  off  the  review  with Dark  Circles  a  band  that  plays  a  blackened  mixture  of  crust,  d  beat  and  hardcore.

  Their  side  of  the  split starts  out  with distorted  amp  sounds  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavy  crust  direction  along  with  some  d  beats  and  black  metal  screams  and   you  can  also  hear  elements  of  post  hardcore  in  the  bands  musical  style  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  use  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

  You  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  their  side  of  the  recording  along  with  a  great  amount  of  crust  influences  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  which  also  utilize  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  atmospheric  synths  and  spoken  word  parts  are  added  onto  the  last  track,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark and  depressive  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Dark  Circles  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  crust  and  hardcore,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ashen"  and  "Isolate".

  Next  up  is  Abstracter  a  band  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and plays  a  blackened  mixture  of  crust,  sludge  and  doom  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  that  also  brings  in  a  touch  of  drone  and  after  a  few  seconds  drum  beats  are  added  into  the  music  along  with  some  grim black  metal   screams  and  you  can  also  hear  some  tremolo  picking  in t he  guitar  riffing  and  the  vocals  also  mix  in  deep  growls  at  times.

   You  can  also  hear  a  great  amount  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  elements  in  the  slower  riffing  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  both  of  their  tracks a re  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the lyrics cover  darkness,  dystopian  and  metaphysical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Abstracter  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Where  All  Pain  Converges".    

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  black  metal,  doom,  sludge  and  crust.  8  out  of  10.
