Mordant Rapture/The Abnegation/The Artisan Era/2018 EP Review

Mordant  Rapture  are  a  band  from  San  Jose,  California  that  plays  a  very  symphonic  and  technical  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  ep  "The  Abnegation"  which  will  be released  in  July  by  The  Artisan  Era.

Tragic  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  album  and  also  gives  the  songs  a  symphonic  feeling when  they  are  mixed   in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  while  the  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  technical  style.

When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  used  briefly  as  well  as  the  riffs  also  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  at  times  the  music  also  gets  very  brutal.

Mordant  Rapture plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  symphonic  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  technical  death  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  philosophical  themes.

In  my  opinion  Mordant  Rapture  are  a  very  great  sounding  symphonic  and  technical  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Withered"  and  "Natal  Trophies".  8  out  of  10.

Unflesh Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Ryan Beevers: Unflesh is an extreme metal band that is driven by a need to express several thoughts and emotions and the spiritual aspect of these thoughts that I feel binds all of them together. The band both musically and lyrically is extremely dark and seeks to channel nothing but darkness.

2.So far you have released an ep and have your first full length coming out, how wold you describe the musical sound that is presented on both of the recordings and also how do they differ from each other?

Ryan Beevers: I’d say the sound of the band is quite chaotic and relentless with an underlying sense of rawness to it. The material on the new album differs from the first EP in terms of just the style of Unflesh expanding and morphing into a clearer vision than the first EP.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored with the music so far?

Ryan Beevers: The bands lyrics deal with the praising of Death and the inevitable downfall and deterioration of Creation.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Unflesh'?

Ryan Beevers: The Unflesh name was inspired by the Dark Fortress song “The Unflesh”. The meaning of the band name has a strong relation to the lyrical subject matter. I’ll leave it to the listener to draw their own conclusions in regards to what the name means

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the art work that is presented on the new album cover?

Ryan Beevers: I had several talks with the guy who designed the cover “Junki Sakuraba” and after explaining to him extensively what the album was about and telling him what I thought would be appropriate visually, he then created the album cover you see now. He did a fantastic job and he’s extraordinarily talented.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Ryan Beevers: So far I think each show we’ve played has been special in their own way. Our stage performance mainly is just to present the music to the best of our abilities and to channel the energies that reside within the music.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans once the album is released?

Ryan Beevers: We are playing a special CD release show on May 19th and we have some tour plans in support of the new album that will be during the summer of this year. We will be announcing the dates very soon.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

Ryan Beevers: We haven’t gotten any offers at the moment and we are sailing by our own winds at the moment in terms of being unsigned.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black and death metal?

Ryan Beevers: The response generally has been quite positive towards our music. This is great to see but I’m hoping to see in the future a little bit stronger opinions of the music whether it be positive of negative.

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Ryan Beevers: My other band Solium Fatalis is getting ready to release our forth record called “Genetically Engineered to Enslave” which should be out around August. In regards to the other guys I know Chris Dovas and Pete De Reyna are busy with Seven Spires stuff and they are supporting their latest record “Solveig”. Chris Gardino just released a new album with one of his bands called Wolfsmyth and it’s a self titled album, it kicks ass.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Ryan Beevers: To deeper and darker depths and expanding the sound of Unflesh through more records and more live shows.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Ryan Beevers: Myself personally its always been bands like Dissection, Mayhem, Angel Corpse, Necrophagist, Iron Maiden, Judas Preist, ect… I still listen to all those records these days as well. I’m also a huge classical music fan. Composers such as Shostakovich, Beethoven, Hayden, Elgar, Mozart ect….

13.What are some of your non musical interests?

Ryan Beevers: Not too much for me personally, music takes up so much of my time that I don’t have time for much else really.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Ryan Beevers: I’d encourage fans of true extreme metal to go and pre order our new album on unfleshband.com or on bandcamp. We will hopefully see you on tour, thanks for the interview.

Unflesh  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  the  melodic  and  technical  sides  of  black,  death  and  thrash  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  death  and  suicide  themes.

Sar Isatum Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

Hello,  first of all, thank you for the interview.  We are currently  hard at work writing new music for our next release and preparing for a big show with belphegor and our cd release show.

2.You have a new album coming out in November, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

Abhorrent, ethereal, cryptic and at times atmospheric.

3.A lot of your lyrics cover Sumerian themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topics?

Our lyrics are not only based on Sumerian theme,  as we only have a few songs that that refer to the topic, the lyrical content in our music  is not limited to one theme.

4.What are some of the other lyrical topics the band explores with the music?

Sar Isatum's lyrics are inspired by native folklore, science fiction, historical events, extraterrestrial theory and the reimagining  of bible happenings from outside points of view. The lyrics tell stories ranging from visions of an apocalyptic and desolate future to native tales of frozen hearted giants to stories of extraterrestrials seeking asylum from a dying solar system only to enlighten prehistoric man

5.I know that the bands name means 'King OF Fire', how does this name fit in with the musical style that you play?

A fire is devastating, it destroys  everything in it's path, and that's how we perceive our musical style, our music is driven by the inner fire that each member posses and it's  represented not only in our recorded music but our live performances

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far?

We have played several great shows,  in a few days we are playing with belphegor,  and we played with inquisition and Uada last month, those are few of the best shows we've played.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album once it is released?

We do plan on booking a tour for 2018 we will start booking for it soon,  we have also been confirmed  for several fest in 2018.
Anyone interested in booking the band can contact us at isatumsar666@yahoo.com

8.Have you received any label interest?

Yes we have but we haven't  found the right label deal. We just teamed up with Death Portal productions and exalted woe for a distribution deal for the release of the album but we're still searching for the right label be a part of.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of symphonic black metal?

So far it has been received  very well,  a lot of good feed back not only locally but worldwide, but there's still much work to do to get the actual recognition we are aiming for.

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Myself (JP Dalkhu)  and cannibal (bass)  both play in a death metal band Vomit God,  we have a tour set up next year and a few fest including las vegas death fest. Our two new members Seven(guitars) and Lesath(keys) come from suns of sorath and they just released an ep.  Seven is also the drummer in pile of priest and they are also releasing an ep nov. 24. Nico has been our live guitar player for the past 7 months and his band is depths of dementia and they are also releasing an album soon.  Our singer Demothi only focuses in S.I and his art.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

The atmosphere in the bandroom and pur compositions have been better than ever,  the introduction of the new members has been outstanding, we are writing new music and are very pleased in the direction  that the new material is heading. We are all in the same mental mode and have the same  determination which is key to making  great music and being a successful band.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Some of our musical influences have been emperor, gorgoroth, dark funeral, old man's child   to name a few but we strive on uniting the elements of several styles and influences with in our members and aiming to make our own sound.
I personally have been listening a lot to 3 bands. Emptiness, Igorr,  and the bm from turkey the sarcophagus.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

On behalf of Sar Isatum I want to thank you and the readers for the interview.
We will be leaving our mark in the black metal world, if we come to a city near you come out and witness our intense  live performance and purchase our album.

...From The Deep Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band? …From the Deep are a 5 piece band from Ottawa Canada. We want to immerse the listener in an atmosphere dictated by acoustic breaths of calm and screams of agony, and to ignite curiosity of what is to come. We blend ominous groove with the relentless crushing of your spirit. We consistently perform high energy and intricate sets in which we experiment with visual components, instrumental soundscape "jams", and acts of self-inflicted physical brutality.

We are currently promoting our newest EP “The Absurd Horror”

2.In July you had released a new ep, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

We have always experimented with different soundscapes and different styles, and that is found in both of our recordings, and even more so in the new material that we are working on now. Our newest EP “The Absurd Horror” follows an organic flow of short-lived peaceful contemplation followed by excruciating agony, and then repeated in a cosmic cycle.

3.This was the first release to come out in 5 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time span?

Despite the long stretch in between recordings, we have been playing a ton of shows in the Ontario and Quebec region. We have also been working on a ton of new material as we are looking to release our next recordings within the next year. We take our time planning out the songs and album concepts, and are very specific with the entirety of our music.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with music?

Our lyrics are inspired by a broad range of subjects, such as: the insignificance of our existence when faced with the vast intricacies of the universe, esoteric literature, consciousness, and the exhaustion of modern life.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name '...From the Deep"?

..From the Deep is a reference to the unknown. We aim to create a sense of uncertainty in our music and lyrics, in that our music is always shifting in styles, tempos, and atmosphere. The ever changing moods found in our music and live performances are crucial to the deeper exploration and exploitation of the unknown absurdities which hide in our minds.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

…From the Deep have been fortunate to play with a ton of international acts that have influenced us, such as Cattle Decapitation, Kreator, Absu, Macabre, Origin, Taake, and so many more. We have also been competing in shows such as Brutal Battle Cuba (Ottawa winners and playing the finals in Montreal soon), Wacken Metal Battle 2015, and En Route to Heavy MTL (Ottawa winners). We are known for our high energy performances with self inflicted assault and impressive displays of vocal ability from our vocalist Graham Cwinn.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

We are keeping our fingers crossed that we may have the opportunity to play in Cuba if we succeed in our Brutal Battle Cuba competition, otherwise, unless Mother Earth has deservedly reclaimed her throne and fatally introduced our species to our mortality, …From the Deep will continue to create music that satisfies our curiosity of the unknown, and will hopefully leave ourselves bloodied and contorted on a stage near you…

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

…From the Deep flow with the universe, and if such an opportunity presented itself with beneficial results, we would most certainly consider it.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of extreme metal?

We have had very positive reviews of our music and our live performances. Here are some examples:
“As is apparent from first listen, …From the Deep employ a certain sophistication, a high level of intelligence amongst the gnashing, fighting, gloriously grotesque atmosphere of their music.”

– SputnikMusic.com

“The warp speed black metal tremolo picking to the more down tuned death metal chugging riffs, to the skull pounding bass and the ever blasting drums make ‘The Absurd Horror’ sickeningly addictive.”

– CadaverGarden.Wordpress.com

“The vocalist appeared just behind, next or in front of me while he performed his varied and highly passionate extreme metal vocals. This dynamical and vivid approach attracted more and more people from the bar and the terrace to see the opening band performing an intense thirty-minute long set.”

– Kluseba.eklablog.com

10.When can we expect a full length album and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We have come up with a few concepts for full lengths and shorter releases, and it is more important for us to have recordings that are complete pieces of art that flow naturally, as opposed to getting as much material on a record as possible. We aim to have our newest release within the next year. The songs composed for this recording follow a lyrical and musical theme, and blend different styles such as black metal, atmospheric post metal, death metal and groove.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Each member of the band bring different influences and styles which helps us make our unique sound. Some notable influences include Opeth, Meshuggah, Withered, Gorguts, Gojira, Decapitated, The Ocean, Pink Floyd, and many more.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

Esoteric literature, many forms of literature, existential thought, martial art philosophy, exploring the mind and it’s many horrifying doorways.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Keep it Deep….

...From The Deep/The Absurd Horror/2015 EP Review

...From  The  Deep  are  a  band  from  Ottawa,  Canada  that  plays  a  melodic  and  technical  mixture  of  black,  death  and  groove  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2015  ep  "The  Absurd  Horror".

Clean  guitar  playing  starts  off  the  ep  and  after  awhile  the  music  starts  to  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  that  introduces  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  screams  onto  the  recording  and  the  riffs  also  bring  in  more  of  a  modern  groove  metla  direction  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion.

All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  music  at  times  can  also  be  very  progressive  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  also  getting  more technical  as  the  ep  progresses  and  classical  guitars  are  also  utilized  briefly.

...From  The  Deep  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  modern  groove  metal,  progressive  and  technical  death  metal  and  mixes  it  with  melodic  black  metal  to  create  a  musical  style  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  philosophical  themes.

In  my  opinion  ...From  the  Deeps are  a  very  great  sounding  melodic  and technical  mixture  of  black,  death  and groove  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Unspeakable"  and  'We  Will  All  be  trees".  8  out  of  10

Enthean Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
We're actively training our new bassist and preparing for our tour this year! Personally, we've all got bullshit jobs. We only have jobs to put money towards the band! Well, we like to eat occasionally.

2.In May you have a  new album coming out, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
The sound is a bit more mature and WAY more professional! We had Mr. Jamie King master the album and he did a killer job! The last thing we released was our demo and Brian mix and mastered it... Neither of us knew how to do much of anything concerning any of it.

3.This is the first release to come out in 3 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time span?
In 2013, I had a bad shoulder injury which prevented me from playing guitar or using my left arm in any way... so 2013 and into 2014 sucked a fat hogs dick. Then, in March and April of 2014, we played a TON of shows and went on a tour around the southeast and east coast of the US. We had a great reception and people dug the shit out of our sound! Our old bassist quit in mid-2015 and we've been looking since then. I do believe we've found the right guy, though.

4.Your lyrics cover some mythological topics, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this subject?
I'm interested in mythology altogether! Not just the stories but how they come to be. So, 'Priests of Annihilation' has a few songs based on the myth of the Christian story (Tones of Desecration, Before You, I Am), and the rest of the songs are mythologized events that have happened in my life except 'Ekpyrosis' which is a pretty cool scientific theory dealing with the cyclic birth/death of the universe.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Enthean'?
"Enthean" means "Divinely inspired". We knew right away that "Enthean" was going to be the band name! We wanted people to be curious as to which deity divinely inspired us... As far as I'm concerned, it's all of them since mythology is a key aspect of our writing.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
There have been quite a few at the world famous Ground Zero in Spartanubrg, SC! A few were in Asheville, NC at the Odditorium. One in Astoria, NY and a very memorable but quick one at The West Texas DeathFest put on by one of the guys in Abolishment of Flesh from Texas. I'd describe our stage show as manic... Both Brian and I switch off on vocal duties and leads and sometimes it happens at the same time, so... yeah, manic.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?
We plan to tour in late Summer of this year, so be on the lookout!

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
We have had a great deal of interest from smaller labels but most of them want physical copies of the new CD before any one decides. We've gotten a few offers, but we're still looking for a home!

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
We've had a ton of positive reactions to our music worldwide. A ton of people dig us in Russia, parts of Europe, South America, Australia, and New Zealand. I've sent CD's to fans in all these parts of the world. We've had a few negative reactions... One of them is that we're not "true" black metal, which ya know what? Fuck it. Who gives a shit? We play what we want and whatever comes out is what it's gonna be. We're not trying to please any elitists. I've had one other experience in which people didn't care for us and it was from a guy in a doom band.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Again, we play whatever comes out... With that said, we have some new stuff written that sounds evil as fuck! We also have some very proggy, interesting music we're writing. So, we're still gonna be Enthean, but it's gonna be a different flavor.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Emperor, Death, Pantera, Immortal, Origin, Nile, Cannibal Corpse, AngelCorpse, Krisiun, Nile, Deicide, The Beatles, The Allman Brothers, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dimmu Borgir, Bach, Beethoven, Segovia, Tarrega... too many to list! Those have all influenced our music... I'm personally listening to Motorhead and Pink Floyd.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?
I really like to read. Mythology, History, and science articles are usually my go to reads. I do have quite a few books I'm trying to get through: '11/22/63' by Stephen King and 'Deviant' by Harold Schechter (a book about Ed Gein). I also enjoy cooking a great deal. Mostly Indian food and desserts...

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
I want everyone to check us out at all of our social media outlets and give us a like, love, a tweet, a play, a fuck off, or whatever is going on at any particular site at the time! Do it! Also, thanks to you guys for the interview!

Enthean/Priests Of Annihilation/2016 CD Review

Enthean  are  a  band  from  South  Carolina  that  plays  a  progressive  mixture  of  symphonic  black  metal  and technical  death  metal  with  elements  of  thrash,  shred  and  classical  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2016  album  "Priests  Of  Annihilation".

Symphonic  sounds  and  melodic  guitar leads  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  drum  beats  a  few  seconds  later  before going  into  a  fast  musical  direction  that  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  black  metal  screams  and  there  are  also  death  metal  growls  and  clean  singing  vocals  present  throughout  all  off  the  recording.

Elements  of  thrash  can  be  heard  in  the  bands  musical  style  while  some  of  the  solos  are  very  technical  and  incorporate  elements  of  shred  and  neo  classical  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  mixing  the symphonic  and  heavy  sounds  together  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  as  the  album  progresses  clean playing  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  at  times.

Ethean  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  symphonic  black  metal  and  technical  death  metal  and  mixes  it  in  with  elements  of  prog,  thrash,  shred  and  classical  to  create  a  style  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  reality  and mythology  themes.

In  my  opinion Ethean  are  a  very  great  sounding  progressive  mixture  of  symphonic  black  and  technical  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Tones  Of  Desecration"  "Ekpyrosis"  and  "Bring  Forth  the  Raven".  8  out  of  10.

Singularity/Self Titled/2014 Full Length Review

Singularity  are  a  band  from  Arizona  that  plays  a  mixture  of  symphonic  black  metal  and  technical  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  and  self  titled  2014  album.

A  very  melodic  and  symphonic  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  and  deep  death  metal  growls  and  after  awhile  the  music  speeds  up  and  adds  blast  beats  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  they  also  add  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  and  spoken  whispers  on  one  of  the  tracks.

At  times  the  music  can  be  very  progressive  which  they  display  very  well  on  the  instrumental  and  the  solos  and  leads  the  band  uses  are  in  a  very  melodic  musical  direction  and  on  the  later tracks  the  band  starts  bringing  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  a  few  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  one  of  the  later  tracks  brings  in  a  sampled  choir  along  with  the  synths  using  a  variety  of  many  different  keys  which  also  does  not  take  away  from  the  heavier  elements  and they  also  bring  in  s  brief  use  of  clean  singing  on  a  couple  of  the  songs.

Singularity  takes  a  very  symphonic  and  melodic  style  of  black  metal  and  mixes  it  in  with  the  more  progressive  and  technical  side  of  death  metal  to  create  a  very  different  approach  to  the  way  black  metal  is  played  as  well  as  helping  the  genre  to  evolve,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  science  fiction  and  utopian  themes.

In  my  opinion  Singularity  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  symphonic  black  metal  and  technical  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "A  Withdrawal  of  Salvation"  "Monolith"  "Utopian  Flesh"  and  "The  Resolution".  8  out  of  10.

Xereth/III/Candlelight Records/2014 CD Review

Xereth  are  a  band  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  technical,  symphonic  and  progressive  form  of  black/death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "III"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  Candlelight  Records.

Epic  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  album  giving  the  music  a  symphonic  feeling  along  with  some  whispers  and  elements  of  electronic  music  before  adding  in  a  more  heavier  direction  with  the  symphonic  sounds  along  with  some  black  metal  screams  and  back  up  shouts  and  you  can  hear  a  good  amount  of  progressive  metal  in  their  musical  sound.

All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  after  awhile  you  can  hear  some  aggressive  vocals  that  lean  more  towards  thrash  and  groove  metal  along  with  some  clean  singing  and  the  solos  and  leads  the  band  uses  are  more  in  a  melodic  80's  metal  direction  mixed  in  with  some  progressive  rock  elements  and  the  music  sticks  mostly  to  a  slow  or  mid  paced  musical  direction  and  at  time s you  can  also  hear  violins  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  towards  the  end  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars  can  be  heard  for  a  few  seconds.

Xereth  expands  on  their  heavy,  progressive  and  symphonic  approach  to  black/death  metal  showing  a  great  amount  of  skill  and  progress  as  musicians  on  this  album,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  philosophical  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Xereth  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "I  Hold  Dominion"
"Death  Defiant"  "Passenger"  and  "The  Chaos  Reign".  8  out  of  10.

Geist Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
We started this band with a desire to do something technical but still heavy on the riffs and melodies. Today, there's much focus on technicality but very little thought about what actually constitutes a song. In this manner, melody is very important to us. Graham (Bassist) and I (Luke, Guitars/Vocals) have been plotting to put a band together for about a decade. However, he and I were always involved in other projects and time was not a luxury we had. We finally decided to put the thing into action. It took us about a year to find Zach (drums/percussion), and during that time we focused on songwriting and defining what we wanted the band to be about, song structure, lyrical content, etc. We had originally planned on Geist being an instrumental band. Then, once I had put lyrics to one song, I was pretty much forced into adding vocals to the rest of them.

2.How would you describe your musical sound?
Simply put, we try to make Progressive Black Metal. We take a lot from technical & progressive bands and try to arrange similarly thought out ideas and lay them over black metal melodies. So, in the end, we have music that is dark and disturbing in its reality that is not confined by time signatures, black metal that is freed from the commonalities.

3.Can you tell us a little bit more about the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
I try to make the lyrics realistic. They may not all be about true stories, but they are certainly about real possibilities. Reality is far more frightening than fantasy.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Geist'?
We chose the name Geist from our fondness of the Philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Geist means spirit or ghost. It is a living thing that is a part of all of us and, at the same time, extends beyond us. I like to view the idea of the Geist as something that acts as a witness. It watches us over time. It sees all of our actions, it knows our secrets.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
One of our most fun shows was one that we recently played at the Blue Note in Columbia, MO. We had just played with Abigail Williams a couple of weeks before and that show did not go so well. We wanted the next one to be different. So, we booked up the venue with some of the "best of the best" in the area. We played with Creaturezoid, Legend, & A Hill To Die Upon. Great lineup with great friends equals a great night.
Another good one was at a local DIY spot. I love the atmosphere in places like that because people are truly there for the music. There's no bullshit behavior, no drunks, no frat boys looking to score with drunk girls. Just the love of music. The crowd really got into it. Probably the best reception we've yet had.

6.Do you have any plans to do a tour outside of your state in the future?
We're possibly planning on a small, month-long tour this summer with a fellow label-band, As Earth Shatters. We played with them a couple of weeks ago and they are really great guys and a great band. They asked us to join them and, if it all works out, we will.

7.The new album is coming out on Hard Wood Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?
It's a great group of guys with great ideas. They are really focused on getting good bands that know their stuff. They are really moving forward with positive ideas and we're glad to be a part of it all. Travis, the label head, has a TON of great ideas for the future and the drive to make it all happen. They have been more than eager to work with us and make us feel supported.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of progressive and extreme metal?
It's hard to say at his point. Since the release of our sing for "The Dark Core," we have been getting a lot more attention, mostly stateside but some around the globe as well. It's nice to have someone contact you from another country that digs what you do. It let's us know that we might be on the right track. We intend to make that continue even farther once the new album is out.

9.Can you tell us a little bit more about the other musical projects that some of the band members are involved with?
At the start of this band, I was in a straight-forward rock band called Triple P, but once Geist got signed, I decided to put all of my focus on this project. However, I have been working on a new project from time to time with a drummer. For this one it'll just be him and myself and I'll be playing bass. I also do a lot of solo recording. I just released an album last year and I'm working on another to be released later this year.
Graham is in another band called Don't Mind Dying. They are a blues-based rock outfit. It's blues at it's roots but it has a heaviness to it that is really fun. He was, until recently also playing with another group called The Mercury Trio, but he played his last show with them last weekend.
Zach is a busy dude. No doubt about it. He plays with us in Geist, he is in another band called Perceiving the Design (also on Hard Wood Records), and he also plays in a 3rd band called Nevalra. He also frequently plays in the local drum corps. He doesn't seem to mind being this busy though. Whatever makes him happy and keeps him outta trouble, ha!

10.You have a new album coming out this year, what can metal fans expect from the record once it is released?
I know everyone wants to feel like they are breaking new ground. I can't say that we'll be inventing or re-imagining anything. I do however feel that we will turn some heads with the structure of the songs. Maybe not so much of the "what," but the "how" of what we're doing is different, if that makes sense. We're taking ideas from a few different levels and crossing them in ways I've not heard before. It'll be heavy, it'll be thought provoking, and I think it'll give the listener a lot to hold on to, even if we are blurring the lines between sub-genres.

11.What are some bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
The bands that have had the biggest influence, as far as my writing for Geist is considered, are fairly standard. Opeth, God Dethroned, Amon Amarth, Dimmu Borgir, & Diabolical Masquerade, to name a few. We take some ideas those bands and toss them in with what we like about more complex acts such as Blotted Science or Animals as Leaders.
Right now, personally, I'm into a lot of black metal. There's so many great acts that are totally underground and reveling in it (as they should). Sorcier Des Glaces' new album has been in constant play in my home. I love the atmospheric, the white noise, the screams of despair that are so prevalent in black metal. It's oddly meditative.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?
I'm a student of Philosophy, History, and Religion. Not that I consider myself to be a philosopher, and I'm certainly not a religious person by definition. I mainly view it as a study of people. It's interesting to see what causes people to believe what they believe, looking at the big picture to see what gives rise to our choices.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
We hope that everyone enjoys our music or, at least, can take something from it. We thank everyone for the support we have had thus far and we are looking forward to a very productive future with Geist.
Thank you!
-Luke

Geist/The Dark Core/2014 Single Review

Geist  are  a  band  from  Columbus,  Missouri  that  plays  a  very  technical,  progressive  and  melodic  form  of  black/death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  the  2  tracks  that  they  have  post  on  their  Reverbnation  page.

The  first  tack  "The  Dark  Core"  starts  out  with  a  very  heavy  and  progressive  sound  along  with  growing  up  a  bit  and  then  slowing  down  and  adding  in  a  mixture of  black  and  death  vocals  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sounding  very  powerful  and  then  clean  guitars  are  added  into  the  song  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction  and  melody  is  added  into  the  guitar  riffing.

The  second  track  "Aeolipile"  starts  off  with  fore  adding  in  vocals  which  are  in  the  more  blackened  death  metal  vein  and  when  they  add  in  leads  they  bring  in  a  70's  metal  feeling  and  after  awhile  the  riffing  gets  more  technical  and  towards  the  end  melodic  vocals  are  added  into  the  song.

With  these  2  songs  Geist  show  a  great  amount  of  talent  and  skill  with  the  way  they  mix  melodic  and  progressive  black  metal  with  the  more  mid  paced  technical  style  of  death  metal  along  with  a  powerful  and  professional  sounding  production  as  well  as  some  dark  lyrics.

In  my  opinion  Geist  are  a  very  great  sounding  melodic,  progressive  and  technical  black/death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  their  music.  8  out  of  10.  http://www.reverbnation.com/geistmetal#

"Wolves'  Choir"  is  introduced  with  synths  and  orchestras  before  adding  in  guitar  leads,  riffs  and  blast  beats  from  the  drums  as  well  as  the  guitar  riffing  utilizing  some  melody  and  then  the  music  slows  down  a  bit  and  growls  come  in  before  alternating  between  fast  and  slow  parts  as  well  as  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  high  pitched  screams  and  halfway  through  the  song t here  is  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  before  adding  in  avant  garde  parts  with  the  heavier  elements.

"The  Age  To  Come"  is  brought  in  with  heavy  guitar  riffs  and  leads  along  with  some  drums  and  a  few  seconds  later  growls  start  to  kick  in  which  also  lead  to  the  guitar  riffing  getting  more  melodic  and  a  couple  of  minutes  later  there  is  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  and  spoken  word  parts  as  we;l  as  a  small  amount  of  violins  in  the  background  before  getting  heavy  again  along  with  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  black  metal  screams.

"Humanitas"  which  is  also  the  last  song  on  the  album  begins  with  melodic  chanting  and  synths  as  well  as  a  choir  and  orchestra.

Song  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  on  a  novel  as  well  as  all  of  the  chapters  in  the  book,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  to  it.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Diabolical  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  album>  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  ""Into  Oblivion"  "Oracle"  "Dialogue  With  The  Dead"  and  "The  Age  To  Come".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
