Solace Of The Void/Self Titled/CDN Records/2019 Full Length Review

Solace  Of  The  Void  are  a  band  from  Canada  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  symphonic  mixture  of  black,  doom  and  folk  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2019  album  which  will  be  released  on  July  26th  by  CDN  Records.

Acoustic  guitar  playing  starts  off  the  album  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  symphonic  parts  also  being  mixed  in  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music.  All  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  elements  of  folk  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  songs.

Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  music  as  well  as  some  tracks  also  bringing  clean  vocals  onto  the  recording,  one  track  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  whispered  vocals  and  cellos  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  album  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  vocals  also  start  utilizing  more  death  metal  growls.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  solitude  and  uncertainty  themes.

In  my  opinion  Solace  Of  The  Void  are  a  very  great  sounding  symphonic  mixture  of  black,  doom,  and  folk  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Before  The  Throne  Of  Beauty  And  Bone"  and  "The  Circle".  8  out  of  10.

Marsh Dweller/Wanderer/Eihwaz Recordings/2018 CD Review

Marsh  Dweller  are  a  solo  project  from  Pennsylvania  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  moves  way  from  his  melodic  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  to  go  into  more  of  a  sludge/post  metal  direction  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2016  album  "Wanderer"  which  was  released  by  Eihwaz  Recordings.

Distorted  noises  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  post  metal  direction  while  the  vocals  bring  in a  mixture  of  growls  and  screams  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  as  well  as  the  slower  riffing  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  sludge  metal.

Have  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  atmospheric  sounding  synths  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  being  utilized  when  the  music  speeds  up  as  well  as  some  clean  playing  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording,  a  small  amount  of  black  metal  screams  and  clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  at  times  the  music  gets  very  atmospheric  and  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  synths  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard.

On  this  recording  Marsh  Dweller  moves  way  from  his  melodic  style  of  black/death  metal  and  goes  into  more  of  an  atmospheric  and  post/sludge  metal  direction,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  following  the  wanderer.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Marsh Dweller  and  while  some  black  and  death  metal  fans  will  not  like  the  new  style,  I  can  see  this  album  winning  a  fan  base  among  fans  of  sludge  and  post  metal.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Wander  I"  and  "Fall".  8  out of  10.

Absence  Betrayal  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric,  symphonic  and  melodic  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2018  album  "Emotions".

A  very  heavy  and  melodic  sound  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  starts  off  the  album  while  the  synths  which  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  symphonic  and  atmospheric  feeling  as  well  as  the  vocals  also  adding  in  a  mixture  of  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  screams.

When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  the  music  also  has  a  lot  of  90's  influences  as  well  as  maintaining  a  very  modern  atmosphere  and  clean  playing  is  added  onto  the  closing  track.

Absence  Betrayal  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  a  very  atmospheric,  symphonic  and  melodic  form  of  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  death  metal  to  create  a  sound  of t heir  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  tragic  and  philosophical  themes.

Stormcast Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?
Since we finished the recording of ‘The Ghost Eater’ we have been focusing on bringing our live performance up to speed. Besides rehearsing the songs, I was also planning the album release and sorting out any band logistics that are part of any band’s album release! Now that the album is finally out, we’ve been focusing more on rehearsals and looking into booking some shows.

2.Recently you have released a new album what are some of the things you feel you have done different musically with this release not you where not able to do on pat recordings?
This album is different to our previous album ‘Frame of Mind’ as I have approached the song-writing in a different way and have explored other areas of the metal genre. In this album you will hear a few more progressive and technical elements which were not so evident in our previous release. On the other hand, this time around we have not included orchestral elements in our songs as we have done in the past, as I feel they wouldn’t fit well in these songs.

3.The band took a 2 year hiatus can you tell us a little bit more about it what?
The band went on hiatus 2 years ago and the future of the band was a bit uncertain. The other members at the time are not part of the band now and so the line-up had to be built again. This took some time and during that time I also focused on writing music for a new album.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music?
The lyrical concept behind the songs is largely represented through the name of the album ‘The Ghost Eater’. The main essence is about facing your fears and not letting one’s ghosts get the better of him or her. To rise above everything bringing you down and take control of your fears, in simple terms. Each song interprets this meaning in its own way while also letting listeners interpret their meaning in their own way.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Stormcast'?
The name came about when we were young and I guess we thought the name sounded cool at the time haha! While that is largely true, I’m happy we chose that name at the time as I like to think that the band’s music is made up of a small ‘chaos’ (or a storm!) in itself and we want to cast that onto others and make them feel what our music makes us feel.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?
We worked with this very talented artist called Lenore (Ani Artworks) who designed the artwork of the whole album. The artwork is based on the name ‘The Ghost Eater’ and I wanted to represent that through some dynamic imagery. I wanted it to be bold and impactful, dark but elegant. Lenore perfectly grasped the concept I was going for and made the artwork ‘match’ the aesthetic of the music in such a great way. I’m extremely pleased with how it turned out!

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Anyone who has ever seen us live knows that we put on a great live performance and we give it our all every time – and that’s true. I hate seeing a band playing live and seeing them look bored and not feeling their own music, it’s such a huge anti-climax and a shame really. We always try our best to put on a good show because, at the end of the day, it’s a SHOW! Without a doubt, our best show we played is MetalDays festival in 2013 in Slovenia. Although it was at 12:30 noon and raining, the energy we got from playing on a huge stage at a big festival was indescribable and our performance that day was most probably our best to date. Another notable gig was our album release show – the venue was packed and we had a great time celebrating our release…good times!

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?
For the moment we aren’t focusing on booking a tour in the near future but will most certainly start booking a few UK shows. Touring isn’t completely out of the picture, I’d just like to get some live experience with the new line-up first before we can take this to an audience outside of where we are based. Things will be a bit more clean in the next few months!

9.Currently the band is unsigned but has worked with a label before in the past, would you be open to working with another label again in the future?
Only if the opportunity is completely worth it. A DIY band can do a lot for itself nowadays with the use endless tools the internet offers if they put the work and effort into it. With certain labels the benefits are obvious and worth considering, but at the moment I am happy to be a DIY band.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your newer music by fans of black and extreme metal?
We’ve gained some good following from scattered places around the world and receive messages supporting us which is a lovely feeling and we appreciate it hugely. I haven’t picked up on a certain influx of attention from black metal fans specifically, as I don’t really consider our music to have many black metal elements, but fans of different metal genres have a expressed a liking to our music which I think is great as we can appeal to various types of fans.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
It’s really hard to say at this point as we are solely focusing on ‘The Ghost Eater’ and haven’t written any material for the future yet. One thing is for certain, the musical direction will not be entirely the same as our previous work as I like to explore different influences when writing music…nobody knows really!

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
When someone asks me what kind of music does Stormcast play I answer, “Well, something between the style of Opeth, Rotting Christ, Gojira and Porcupine Tree…but not exactly!”. Those bands have been a huge inspiration for me over the past years and it was inevitable they would influence my songwriting…I have been listening to a bit more ‘proggier’ styles over the past couple of years and it has creeped in to my songwriting, but the recent album still does contain that main ‘Stormcast’ sound to it. I like exploring other music as well though, I’ve been listening to the alt-rock band Arcane Roots a lot for the past year or so, they’re a UK band and incorporated a lot of cool electronic elements on their last record – extremely creative stuff, highly recommended to anyone.

13.What are some of your non musical interests?
I watch a lot of movies and Netflix series! I’m currently watching the series Vikings which is pretty good. Apart from that I’m interested in Digital Marketing and is also what I do in my day job…I also like to exercise often and cook quite a lot…and travelling to new places whenever I get the chance!

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
I’d just like to say thank you to everyone who has supported Stormcast up to now, it’s been a huge help and encouragement for the band to continue strong and make great music. Also thank you to you for taking the time to have a chat about the band and our album! I hope you enjoy it!

Verilun Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?
The new album has been released just a few days ago, and there's has been not too much happened to the band since then, but I must say, I could not relax at all. It seems, there is a relatively great interest about the new album, so I have continuously something to do about it, and that is very good. On the other hand we are about to fix the line-up to be able to start making gigs.

2. Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past/
'Through fire... in the Sun' is the title of Verilun's second full-length album. Our debut, 'Home for the dead' was released 5 years ago. Writing the songs to 'Through fire... in the Sun' was like writing the songs again to the very first album. 'Home for the dead' had no influence on us at all, so maybe this is the reason why the new album is quite different from the previous one. It is more epic, more atmospheric, more melodic, but more powerful at the same time.

3. This is your first album, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

Sorry, I do not fully understand the question, this is not our first album, if you don't mind I give here some info on the making of the recent album.

We have already started writing the songs to the new album at the end of 2016. And in almost exactly one year we completed all the songs. Since our drummer has quitted at the beginning of 2017, only Krisztian and I were working on the new stuff. In November 2017 we started recording the album with Tamas Laki at studio Sasfeszek (Eagle's Nest)in Hungary. Drums had been performed and recorded by Oliver Zisko, a well-known, talented and respected drummer of multiple musical genres and styles. We have finished all the studio work by the beginning of March this year, and one month later a single, called 'Upon the mountain's has been released by Sliptrick Records. One month later again on the 3rd of May, the full-length, 'Trough fire... in the Sun' been out, also by Sliptrick Records.

4. Some of the lyrics on the new album are based upon 'Hungarian Folklore', can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic?
Two songs of the album are related Hungarian mythology and/or religion. 'Seven years and seven winks' is actually a tale about a magic steed, called 'táltos', who with his son defeats the dragon who stole the Sun, the Moon and all the stars from the sky, so people were living in instant darkness. 'Through fire... in the Sun' is about a theory saying, that our ancestors are living in the Sun, we can talk to them through fire, and at the end we can leave this world and depart to the Sun through fire.
The Hungarian folklore is very old and has a very comprehensive and deep meaning through symbols. It's very interesting to get to know how our ancestors were living, how was their relationship to the world they were part of, and what a deep knowledge they had about it. It's so sad, that instead of improving this knowledge we have forgot it almost completely.

5. What are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
There are lyrics about the catastrophic situation of this decaying world we live in, our roles in this world and in this situation; there are some spiritual and more personal topics as well, and of course there is a song about planet Mars too from a very special aspect.

6. I know that the band is  named  after  the  Hunnish name or Mars, how does this name fit in with the musical style that you play?

Like Martian metal? :-) I liked the idea to have a name in a language which does not exist anymore. On the other hand due to the very close relationship between Hunnic and Magyar people, Hunnish is very similar to Hungarian (magyar) language, so it is almost like having a Hungarian name.
Planet Mars and the mysteries about it is one of my fields of interests too, so this name came quite easily.

7. What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
We have performed a lot of shows during the years. They were mainly gigs in clubs in Hungary with similar bands. There were better and worse gigs too, but in general I must say, we played live a little bit too rare mainly due the opportunities we had. This is something I'd like to change in the future.

8. Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?
Sure! First we have to fix the line-up by finding a drummer. As soon as the line-up is complete, we'll start arranging the gigs.

9. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black and death metal?
With our first album in general the feed-back from both press and news were quite good. And since the second album is out, a quite great interest has been shown about the release of it, I'm receiving day by day a request for information, interview, as well as some very positive reviews have already been shared with me.

10. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Considering the differences between the first two albums, and supposing that the third one might be even so different from the first two too, it is very difficult to answer this question. We do not use any guidance, do not have any plan when writing new songs. The ideas just popping-up, we try to grab them, and form them as well as possible. Sometimes I even had the feeling, that the songs were being written by themselves.

11. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
The two songwriters of Verilun (Krisztian and myself) have relatively different musical interests. Krisztian prefers a more rhythm based, complex, and technical death metal, while I try to bring some melodies, atmosphere in the songs, and I represent the black metal side of the band. I think this duality reflects in both Verilun albums, and this will be for sure the skeleton of the news songs too. I'm sure, by mixing these two musical approaches on a proper way, we'll end up with an interesting result again.

12. What are some of your non musical interests?
Nowadays I listen to non-metal bands, like 'Laibach', 'Die Antwoord', but I like 'Die Verbannten Kinder Evas' and 'Sopor Aeternus and the Ensemble Of Shadows' very much too. Next to metal I've been listening to the music of some other musical genres too for a long time, and to my opinion some of the are really close to metal, only the way of expression, the instruments being used are different.

13. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
It was an interesting journey for me to make this album, I've met very interesting things, learnt a lot during the songwriting period. There's one thing I may emphasize, and which could be relevant to the other areas of life too: if you want something and you are really content to do for it, you can be sure, you'll make it. There might be obstacles, you may lose the light at the end of the tunnel, but if you are persistent and you never give up, you'll reach your goal at the end.

Heron Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

Jamie: We have been working hard with little tours and local shows to promote the album as well as writing new material. We have a few original tracks in the works as well as some killer covers that we hope to add to the set soon.

2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from your 2 previous ep's?

Scott : The new album A Low Winters Sun is almost an extension of our last EP Fire Twin. We re recorded two of the three songs and added them into our full length. The Great Attractor and Fire Twin are both such epic tracks that we felt they belonged on a full length. The album was recorded by Jesse Gander at Rain City Recorders in Vancouver. He has worked with many amazing, heavy bands so it was an easy decision to decide to work with him. The album as a whole is quite aggressive and definitely much heavier then our first EP. We are really fucking stoked on the outcome.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore on the new album?

Jamie: Ross and I tend to touch on topics and themes such as loss, longing, depression, philosophy, and cosmology. Ross' lyrics are very stark and brutal while mine are longer and more like prose.

4.Some of your lyrics also deal with existentialism, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic?

Jamie: The aspect of existentialism I am most drawn to is the idea that each individual is responsible for giving their life meaning. There is probably no god, and I probably only get one go around, so I'm going to try and enjoy it. To some that is very depressing. For me it's encouraging.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Heron'?

Scott: Honestly, there isn't much meaning behind the name. Ross and I played in a Sludgy Grind band back in 2011 called Cathar. The first song we wrote was called Heron. Ross drunkenly leaned into me at the end of jam and said "Heron would be a sick name for a doom band and we should make that happen" here we are 7 years later.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Scott: We have been very fortunate to play some really killer gigs over the last two years. Most of them have been opening for bands rolling through town like High On Fire, Pallbearer, Weedeater, Conan and a bunch more. Many thanks go out to Vancouver's hard working promoters for giving local bands a shot to play. In terms of our stage performance we just giver from start to finish no matter how many people are there to see us play or wether or not its a Monday night or a packed Friday gig.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

Jamie: We just wrapped up a short 5 show run in BC and Alberta. The shows were busy and we feel we were well received. Lots of copies of the album were sold and we are stoked on that! Planning to venture farther from home every tour so we plan to try an Eastern Canada or a Western US tour next. Ideally we would go to Europe after that. We have been booking more festivals lately and that is taking us to some unique shows closer to home.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of sludge and doom metal?

Jamie: We can't thank all the Metal blogs and listeners who have supported us enough. We are just four friends who like to write and play music together. The fact that other people come to shows or write reviews is very humbling and greatly appreciated.

9.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Jamie :Scott plays in Sand Witch and they have a newer record out and play locally often. Bina has 900 projects on the go at any given time but has been playing in Mendozza for years. I have a solo project called Night Mother that is an outlet for more electronics-driven music. Ross is too busy being handsome for more musical projects.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Scott: Every album seems to get heavier. We hope to continue to combine sludgy doomy riffs with lots of post metal breaks. We are currently working on a few new tracks that are long and pretty devastating.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Jamie: We wear our musical influences like ISIS, Sleep, Sumac, and Corrupted on our sleeves but we also listen to lots of different styles of music that contribute to our sound. On the road bands like 1914, Russian Circles, Cage Grind Noire, Burning Witch, and Midnight always end up on the playlist.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

Scott: Bina and Ross ride Motorcycles, Scott walks dogs and Jamie is a tired Dad

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Lord Shades Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?
Alex : The new album will be released on the 8th of December 2017, we're preparing a French tour in 2018 and a series of shows along 2018 & 2019.

Cyril : Since we're done with the album, we've been looking for partners to promote and distribute it. We've inked a deal with Dooweet Agency which is in charge of promotion and distribution. Meanwhile, we're searching for gigs – at first in France, then we'll be trying to book gigs in Europe and get in touch with several European festivals.
We're preparing a show for the 13th of January that will be the starting point for the live promotion of the new album.

2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
Alex : « The Uprising Of Namwell » is our third album and the end of a trilogy.

Cyril : First, with each album we want our sound to evolve. We try to learn from our mistakes on the previous albums. The toughest point with us is that each instrument has to be audible, the amplified ones (bass, guitars, drums) that are the skeleton of our music, but also the traditional ones (acoustic guitar, accordion, African percussions…) as well as the backing vocals – which for this new album have been performed by a real choir, without samples and electronic stuff. Then, once everything is mixed properly, we have to add to it the orchestral samples, the sound effects and the various sonic atmospheres created by our arranger Olivier PERRIN with whom we've been working since our first album, and who delivers a performance which makes us really proud.
The sound of « The Uprising Of Namwell » may be darker than on our previous album, but it's also more straight forward !

3.This is your first album since 2011 can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?
Alex : Yes, and the one before that was in 2008. I'd rather have some time running before starting to write new material, to let our tastes and expectations evolve between two albums. In doing so, in my opinion, a new album is inevitably more mature and different from the one before.

Cyril : Like Alex just said, that lapse of time allows us to put things into perspecvtive about what's been done in the past, and release a Lord Shades album which won't be a copy of the one before.
Between these two albums, we've been achieving some plans like playing at Wacken Open Air and Metal Days. We thank these two festivals for their trust. We also did a special show in France at Rock Metal Camp, which allowed us to play on stage with some of our studio guests. It was very interesting to show the audience something else than the average metal band, and help them discovering the human richness of the band.

4.Your lyrics have a concept involving a fantasy world that was made up by the songwriter, can you tell us a little bit more about it?
Alex : We have created the world and the saga of Lord Shades with the help of Laurent Barbarit, who is our official lyricist. He's been writing all of our lyrics since the beginning of the trilogy, we owe him a lot. The only exception on that new one is the choir singing in Latin, which has been written by Hugot Blanchet and the words in Arab written by Sofiane 2under, which he sings himself on the track « The Awakening ».

Cyril : As a matter of fact, all our lyrics are dealing with heroic fantasy. The story has been created from scratch. Laurent Babarit, our lyricist, wrote all by himself the words and the story after common ideas that we're discussing together during meetings about that topic.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Lord Shades'?
Alex : From the very first chapter of the trilogy, Lord Shades is a ghost locked within his own spell. We can see him sometimes as a dark misty mass, maybe that's one of the reasons why he's called « The Lord Shades ».

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Alex : Many French gigs and festivals have been amazing experiences, with great reception. But I think that Wacken 2012 and Metal Days 2014 still are the most amazing stages we've shared.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
Alex : We're currently working on a co-produced tour for 2018, and looking for festivals in 2018-2019 in order to promote the new album and the whole trilogy as well.

Cyril : The plans for dates and tours are in progress, but it takes time to achieve that. It's hard today to set somehing reliable and serious. We don't want to play gigs that wouldn't be interesting neither for the audience nor for the band. Our goal is to deliver real shows that will transcribe Lord Shades' atmosphere and capture the audience.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of symphonic black and death metal?
Alex : The response to our second album has been excellent ! We've had a lot of positive reviews, and we can't wait to see how this third album will be greeted. We feel like waiting for doomsday !

Cyril : We don't claim to have reached a worldwide level with the second album, but the feedbacks were really good, from the media as well as from the fans.
Maybe this third album will help us reaching more people in various countries. We are currently waiting for feedback.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Alex : Anyway, on stage, in a communion with the numerous guests that we had on each album. The idea is to have much more than 4 people stepping on stage ! We tried it once, and we plan to make it again. Lord Shades really comes alive with those guests !

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Alex : Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Mozart, Benighted, Moonsorrow, Endlaved, Morbid Angel, Pink Floyd, Hanggai, Septic Flesh, Tinariwen… Many different things have an influence on us, all of us 4 have multiple and varied tastes.
Recently I discovered Skalmold live, and I went to see my favorite childhood band Helloween on their Pumpkins United tour.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?
Alex : Nature, country, fresh air… Everything that can be inspiring.

Cyril : Wine and good food… We're Gallic !

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Alex : First, huge thanks go to the guests who took part in our albums/demos/gigs, and without whom Lord Shades wouldn't have the same interest.
And last but not least, huge thanks to you !

Catacean Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
1. The band started with me (David) wanting to write heavy music inspired by bands like Opeth, Cult of Luna, Yob, Emperor, and Neurosis. At first, I didn't know if this project would even become a band, I just wanted to write some songs, record them, and then make those recordings available for people to listen to. Fortunately, I was able to slowly, but surely assemble a group of talented guys who were eager to make their own mark on the material, and the end result exceeded my expectations. The band consists of me on guitar, Emmanuel on guitar/sax/vocals and assorted auxiliary instruments, Steven on bass/vocals, Trae on main vocals, Ben on guitar/vocals, and Dan on drums.

2.Recently you have released your first album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
2. I feel that the sound encompasses everything that we as a group love about metal music. One of the goals was to create a mood, and I hope we accomplished that through the use of dynamics. We're all fans of music that takes one on a journey.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
3. The main lyrical topics refer to inner/outer space, with the extrasolar planet WASP-18b being a particular subject of inspiration. That planet is spiraling towards it's host star, and should merge with it in about a million years. So the vastness of space is an obvious inspiration, but also the vastness of the ocean - that is our planet's inner space.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Cetacean'?

4. The group was originally called 'Orcinus' after Orcinus Orca - the full scientific name of the Orca aka Killer Whale. I wanted the music to be the aural equivalent of that mammal - devastating yet elegant. We found there was another band called Orcinus, and we decided to change the name to Cetacean, which is the infra-order of marine mammals that includes whales and dolphins.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

5. We haven't played any shows yet, but we do have one scheduled for March 5th, 2016 in downtown Los Angeles. We hope to achieve an intense and inspiring live performance.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?
6. We have our record release show March 5th, 2016, and we're looking into some more shows for the spring/summer. As far as touring goes, we're looking into a short run up to the bay area (SF, Oakland) this summer.

7.The album was released on 'Apes Who looked Up Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?
7. Apes Who Looked Up is an independent label founded and run by our own Benigno Esau. It's intent is to produce and release ours and other friends projects under one banner. A musical family, so to speak, composed of people that have collaborated and known each other for a pretty long time and wish to see their output represented amongst other DIY contemporaries.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black and sludge metal?
8. So far we've been receiving positive feedback. However, I don't believe we've had much exposure to metal fans outside of the United States yet. I hope that changes soon, and that those fans enjoy our material.

9.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?
9. Emmanuel (guitar/sax/vocals) is part of the LA blackened death-prog band Exhausted Prayer, and they have recently completed recording a split with Burials, an amazing band from Portland, Oregon. (Swan - you want to add more details?). Daniel (drummer) has been recording with his bands Ancestors and Horse the Band, and Steven's other band The Elephant Parallax are wrapping up a recording as well.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
10. The next round of writing will be the first material that the whole band will be collaborating on. The three songs on Breach | Submerge were largely written by Me (david) and Emmanuel, with some help from Steven and all lyrics written by Trae (vocalist). The next batch of songs will be a much more collaborative effort, and I know Steve, Emmanuel and I already have a lot of song ideas waiting to be jammed on and fleshed out. Although we all love metal, we also have myriad other music influences, and we plan to draw upon those as well.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
11. Cult Of Luna and Opeth are probably the primary influences that inspired me to creat this project. However, there are a host of other bands that have been inspirational such as Intronaut, Black Sheep Wall (Trae's former band), Neurosis, Metallica, Megadeth, The Atlas Moth, Emperor, Krallice, Nachtmystium, Death Spell Omega, Wolves In The Throne Room etc...We've also been influenced by classic and modern jazz artists such as Christian Scott, Bill Frisell, and Kurt Rosenwinkel. Swan in particular has taken to Tuvan throat singing, and he does some of that on the track Outpour I.II.III.

I'm currently listening to bands like Un, Metric, Immortal Bird, Nothing, Elliphant, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Hooded Menace, Midnight, Boys Night Out, Cult Leader, Echoes of the Moon, Darkentries, He Whose Ox Is Gored, and Arctic Sleep.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?
12. Non-musical interests for me would be bodybuilding/fitness, skateboarding, sci-fi movies and literature, cats.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any  final words or thoughts?
13. Thank you for taking the time to do this interview. We thank family and friends who have supported our endevour. I hope the readers of this zine enjoy our musical expression and are inspired by it.

Cetacean/Breach/Submerge/Apes Who Looked Up Records/2016 EP Review

Cetecean  are  a  band  from  California  that  plays  a  very  blackened,  atmospheric  and  progressive  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  ep  "Breach/Sumberge"  which  will  be  released  in  may  by  Apes  Who Looked  Up  Records.

Dark  yet  clean  playing  starts  off  the  ep  giving  the  music more  of  a  progressive  feeling  along  with  some  drum  beats a  few  seconds  later  and  saxophones  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  after  a  couple  of  minutes  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  heavy  sludge  metal  direction  that  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  aggressive  almost  hardcore  style  vocals.

All  of  the  tracks a re  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  slower  riffs  bring  in  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal  while  the  melodies  bring  in  a  touch  of  post  metal  and  when  the  guitars  bring  in  tremolo  style  riffing  it  adds  in  black  metal  elements  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  high  pitched  screams  and  the  songs  also  bring in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  and  melodic  fashion  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  clean  singing  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  as  the  ep  progresses  psychedelic  elements  are  added  into  the  music  a  little  bit  more.

Cetacean  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black  and  sludge  metal  and  mixes  it  with  post  and  progressive  metal  to  create  a  musical  style  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  Cryovolcanism,  melancholy  and  resonance  themes.

In  my  opinion  Cetacean  are  a  very  great  sounding   blackened,  atmospheric  and  progressive  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Earth  Is  A  Whisper".  8  out  of  10.
