  Malevich  are  a  band  from  Atlanta,  Georgia  that  plays  an  experimental  mixture  of  dissonant  black,  sludge  metal  and  post  hardcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2024  ep  "Trembling  And  Dowsed"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Roman  Numeral  Records.

  Distorted  beats  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  synths  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  heavier  sludge  metal  direction.  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  sounding  hardcore  style  screams  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  experimental  moments.

  Some  of  the  screams  also  add  in  touches  of  black  metal  while  the  riffs  also  go  into  a  dissonant  direction  at  times.  Growls  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  grindcore  influences  when  it  speeds  up  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  slide  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  clean  sections  also  add  in  post  rock  elements  and  clear  vocals.    

  Malevich  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  dissonant  black,  sludge  metal,  post  hardcore  and  experimental  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  existential  dread  and  the  oppressive  systems  under  capitalism.

  A  very  fast  and  brutal  grindcore  sounds  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  dissonant  sounding  while  the  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Elements  of  sludge  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  album  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  a  couple  of  tracks  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  as  well  as  some  touches  of  harsh  noise  also  being  utilized  briefly.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  brutal  direction  which  also  adds  in  a  lot  of  blast  beats,  tremolo  picking  and  grindcore  elements.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Influences  of  doom  and  sludge  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  while  spoken  word  parts  are  also  utilized  on  a  couple  of  songs.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  riffing  also  capturing  the  brutality  and  heaviness  of  death  metal  and  one  of  the  tracks  is  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  growls  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  A  very  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later.  Elements  of  sludge  metal  are  also  added  into  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  while  the  riffs  also  add  in a   decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  and  the  faster  parts  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a lot  of  brutal  blast  beats  and  grindcore  influences.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  bring  in  elements  of  sludge  metal.  Vocals  are  mostly  black  metal  screams  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  mid  tempo  sections  of t he  songs  are  heavily  rooted  in  crust  punk.

  Cibola  are  a  solo  project  form  Sweden  that  plays  a  melodic  and  progressive  mixture  of  black,  death,  groove,  thrash  metal  and  grindcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2022  ep  "Let  Us  Burn".

  Rain  and  thunder  sounds  start  off  the  ep  before  adding  some  melodic  guitar  solos  and  leads  onto  the  recording.  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard on  a couple  of  tracks  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  some  blast  beats  being  added  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  and  the  mid  tempo  sections  also  add  in  elements  of  groove  emtal.

Chestcrush/Vdelygmia/2021 CD Review

 

  Chestcrush  are  a  duo  from  Scotland  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black, sludge,  post,  death  metal  and  grindcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2021  album  "Vdelygmia"  which  will  be  released  in  July.

  Drones  start  off  the  album  while  stringed  instruments  and  whispers  can  also  be  heard  briefly  before  going  into a   heavier  direction.  Elements  of  sludge  metal  are  also  added  into  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  brutal  sounding  blast  beats  and  grindcore  influences.

  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  distorted  sounding  noises  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording.  Death  metal  growls  are  also  utilized  at  times  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  a  small  amount  of  melody  also  being  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  90's  underground  metal  style  as  well  as  some  tremolo  picking  also  being  added  into  some  of  the  faster  riffing  and  as  the  recording  progresses  small  touches  of  post  metal  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  violence  and  political  situation  in  Greece.

  In  my  opinion  Chestcrush  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  sludge,  post,  death  metal  and  grindcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Digester"  "Theocracyst"  "Skullcrush"  and  "Vaptizetai  O  Doulos".  8  out  of  10.

Feed Them Death/Negative/Brucia Records/2021 CD Review

 

  United  Kingdom's  solo  project  Feed  Them  Death  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  avant  garde  mixture  of  black,  sludge  metal,  experimental,  noise  and  grindcore  from  his  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2021  album  "Negative"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Brucia  Records.

  Avant  garde  soundscapes  and  clean  playing  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  faster  grindcore  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  screams  while  the  riffing  also  brings  in  some  dissonant  structures  and  at  times  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  sounding.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  Guitar  solos  and  leads  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  and  are  also  done  in  a  very  chaotic  yet  progressive  style.

  Elements  of  noise,  industrial  and  drone  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  music  also  starts  getting  more  diverse  sounding,  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  clean  vocals  and  shouts  are  also  added  onto  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  philosophical  writings  of  Theodor  Adorno.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Feed  Them  Death  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  avant  garde,  black,  sludge,  doom  metal,  grindcore,  experimental,  noise,  industrial  and  drone,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Minima  Moralia"  "Our  Cruelty  to  Reality  (Evokism  IV)"  and  "The  Idiotic  Yearnign  For  More  (Barbarism  of  Perfection)".  8  out  of  10.

Vainoa/Pelon Varjo/2021 EP Review

 

  Vainoa  are  band  from  Finland  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  sludge,  post  metal,  grindcore  and  hardcore  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2021  ep  "Pelon  Varjo".

  A  very  fast  and  aggressive  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  black  metal  screams  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats,  tremolo  picking  and  grindcore  elements.  The  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  also   mix  in  some  influences  of  post  metal  and  crust  punk.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  music  also  captures  the  raw  energy  of  punk  rock.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  riffing  along  with  some  hardcore  style  shouts  also  being  utilized  at  times  as  well  as  most  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  short  in  length.  When  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  chaotic  style, the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  touch  of  sludge  metal  and  synths  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the ep  also  closes  with  a  cover  of  Musta  Paraati's  "Metalliset  Kasvot".  

  Vainoa  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black,  sludge,  post  metal,  grindcore  and  hardcore  punk  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  angry  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Vainoa  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  post,  sludge  metal, g rind  and  hardcore  punk  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Pelon  Varjo"  andf  "Aani  Sen  Menettaneille".  8  out  of  10.

  Non  Serviam  are  a  band  from  France  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  doom,  industrial  metal,  grindcore,  crust  and  experimental  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Le  Coeur  Bat"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Code666.

  Experimental  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  a  few  seconds  later  while  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  riffing  as  well  as  adding  in  some  industrial  style  beats  at  times.

  Black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  elements  of  doom  metal.  Clear  male  and  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  in  certain sections  of  the  album  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats,  crust  and  grindcore  elements.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  distorted  style.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  the  album  also  having  its  avant  garde  elements. 

.  Keyboards  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  music  along  with  some  songs  also  adding  in  some  psychedelic  touches,  the  also  bring  in  a  brief  ritualistic  version  of  Moody  Blue's  "Knights  In  White  Satan"  before  returning  back  to  their  original  material,  whispered  vocals  can  also  be  heard  on  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  French  and  English  and  cover  Occultism  and  Anarchy  themes.

  Poison  Wind  are  a  band  from  the  United  States  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  doom,  death,  thrash  metal,  avant  garde,  crust  and  grindcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Virus!"  which  will  be  released  on  October  30th  by  Eleventh  Key.

  Hardcore  style  shouts  and  crust  influenced  riffing  starts  off  the  album  while  elements  of  thrash  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing.  At  times  the  music  also  adds  in  a  touch  of  80's  era  grindcore  along  with  some  black  metal  screams  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  all  of  the  musical instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Death  metal  growls  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  and  avant  garde  sounding  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other  as  well  as  one  track  also  introducing  clean  singing  onto  the  recording,  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also be  heard  and  one  track  also adds  in  touches  of  harsh noise.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  COVID19  pandemic.

Shrykull/Temple Steps/Trepanation Recordings/2020 Split Album Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  United  Kingdom's  Shrykull  and  Temple  Steps  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Trepanation  Recordings  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Shrykull  a  duo  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black, sludge,  doom,  death  metal,  grind  and  hardcore.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  distorted  amp  sounds  before  going  into  a  heavier  doom  metal  direction  which  also  captures  the  heaviness  of  sludge  metal.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  all of  the  musical  instruments  on  their  side  of  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  The  mid  tempo  sections  of their  songs  also  show an  influence  of  hardcore  along  with  their  second  track  being  a  cover  of  Grief's  "I  Hate  The  Human  Race"  which  also  introduces  death  metal growls  onto  their  side  of  the  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  dystopian  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Shrykull  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of    black, sludge,  doom,  death  metal,  grind  and  hardcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "The  Misanthrope".

  Next  up  is  Temple  Steps  a  duo  that  plays  a  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very slow, dark,  heavy  and  melodic  doom  metal  sound  while  the  bass  guitar  also  adds  in  the  heaviness  of sludge  metal.  The  vocals  are  also  done  in  a  screaming  style  along  with  all  of  the music  sticking  to  a  slower  direction  as  well  as  the  second  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  and  whispers.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  misanthropic  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Temple  Steps  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Snapped  Crook".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  black,  sludge  and  doom  metal.

  A  very  fast  and  brutal  grindcore  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  guttural  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  screams  while  experimental  and avant  garde  elements  as  well  as  some  synths  are  also  mixed  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music.

  All  of  the  musical instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very powerful  sound  to  them  while  a  small  amount  of  melody  can  also  be  heard  in some  of  the  guitar  riffing. Touches  of  sludge  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.
