Evilon/A Warriors Way/2023 Full Length Review

Evilon  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  melodic  mixture  of  folk,  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2023  album  "A  Warriors  Way"  which  will  be  released  in  September.

A  very  epic  and  symphonic  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  also  introducing  in  elements  of  folk  music  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  the  vocals  bring  in  a  mixture  of  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  screams.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  as  very  melodic  style  while  some  songs  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.  Clear  pagan  vocals  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  album  along  with  a  couple  of  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars,  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  and  most  of  the  recording  sticks  to  a  mid  tempo  direction.

On  this  recording  Evilon  brings  in  more  of  a  symphonic  and  melodic  mixture  of  folk,  black  and  death  emtal.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Norse  and  Celtic  Mythology  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Evilon  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  melodic  and  symphonic  folk,  black  and  death  emtal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Yggdrasil"  "A  Warriors  Way"  "Galdr"  and  Valkyria".  8  out  of  10.

Evilon Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
Evilon is a melodic folk-deathmetal band from Sweden that was created in 2015.
In January 2017 we released our first EP "shores of evilon".  Our debut album "Leviathan" will be out the 28th of September via Wormholedeath.

2.You have your first full length coming out in September, what are some of the things you have done different musically with this recording that you where not able to do on your previous ep?
I would say that we have done many things differently. First of all the recording process has been more relaxed and you could say that we had a plan on how we would do it, and we sticked to it. We knew that we did not want to record vocals and drums by ourselfes like we did last time, and we knew that we wanted to be part of the whole "mix and master process" to get it as we wanted.
You could say that the music is different in a way aswell, shortly after the release of our EP you could say that we properly found our own "Evilon sound", you can still listen to the EP and hear that "this is Evilon" but the upcoming album will contain even more "Evilon sound".

3.Your lyrics cover Norse, Celtic and Biblical themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?
Well, the Norse part felt naturally for us, maybe it's the ancient viking blood in our veins, haha!
The celtic theme also came quite naturally, there are so many possibilities for melodies if you can be inspired by the Celtic music, we don't use bagpipes and stuff like that in our songs yet but usually you can capture the celtic feeling by playing the right melody on a guitar, and we also use violins.
And so to the biblical themes.. none of us is religious, but you can still get a lot of inspiration from the bible if you look at it as a "book of tales".
Of course we don't have a "biblical theme" in every song , but we have pieces here and there, like in "Leviathan" for instance.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Evilon'?
I have always been interested in the island "Avalon", there is so much mystery and stories about that island. So i thought "Avalon would be a awesome name for this band", it turned out that the name was already taken by a christian band so I thought that we play kinda evil music.. Evil+Avalon became Evilon.
So it's really nothing more but a mixture of words.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the album cover?
The artwork is made by our vocalist Joel.
The idéa behind it is kinda "less is more", we want the artwork to stand out by it's simplicity. We wanted the artwork to reflect EviloN, and also the album overall. As you can see the album looks like a runestone, with the beast "Leviathan" on it.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Oak metalclub in Norway is a GREAT place to play a cool live show, i think it's impossible to find better audience! I don't know which show it's been the best but we did a strange and a really really funny show in the basement of the  Oak metalclub one time.
This was a private show for members of the club only, we played in a room with full drumset, 2 guitars with cabinets and amps, bass with cabinet and amp and ofcourse vocals, the room was 11-12 square meters and at the last song of the show we was 40 people in that room with closed doors.
It was crowded but damn funny! I actually think it was some sort of record!

7.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?
No tours planned yet, we have a show the 28th of September (the release date of the album), other than that we don't have much planned yet.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of folk and melodic death metal?
The EP was released independently by us and never got any publicity really, and as you know the full-lenght album is not released yet.
But we have gotten good reactions of the song "Leviathan" that was released quite recently as a lyric video, we have also had some plays on different radios lately with the new songs so I hope that people will like it, I think we will hear more as soon as the album is released!

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Hard to tell, as i mentioned before, it feels like we have found our own style now and that we will stick to that. We are working hard to not "copy ourselves" and focus on making great songs! Hopefully we will get more publicity when "Leviathan" is released, especially now when the album will be released by wormholedeath! We are not alone this time and that feels great.
Also we hope to get alot more gigs in the future and some touring would be really fun!

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
All of the members of Evilon listen to different stuff, i think thats why we have the sound that we have today, but to mention some bands:
Wintersun, Opeth, In flames, At the gates, Arch enemy, Helloween, Eluveitie, etcetc.
It's a big blend of bands and genres!

11.What are some of your non musical interests?
Spending time with family, animals, videogames and stuff like that, the music is the biggest interest!

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
First of all i would like to thank you all for the positive response and the support we that we have gotten so far, we really appreciate it! Make sure to stay tuned, the album will be released the 28th of September and we would like to hear what all of you out there thinks about it!
Stay metal and stay tuned!

Evilon/Leviathan/WormHoleDeath Records/2018 CD Review

Evilon  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  plays  melodic  folk/death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Leviathan"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  WornHoleDeath  Records.

Folk  instruments  start  off  the  album  and  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  Celtic  atmosphere  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  death  metal  growls  are  also  used  at  times  as  well  as  the  music  mixing  the  folk  elements  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music.

A  great  amount  of  melody  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  black  metal  screams  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  as  well  as the  clean  vocals  also  giving  the  songs  more  of  a  pagan  metal  atmosphere,  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  a  few  tracks.

Evilon  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  folk,  melodic  black  and  death  metal and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Biblical,  Norse,  Celtic  Mythology.  grief,  love,  hate,  hate  and  anger  themes.

In  my  opinion  Evilon  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  folk,  melodic  death  and  black  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Eye  of  the  Storm"  "Souldrainer"  "Welcome  Home"  and  "When  The  Leaves  Are  Falling".  8  out  of  10.
